“We thank the Lord Jesus Christ

for the progress of our community.

From 2010 to 2015, our numbers

have increased from 20 members

to 152! This progress is neither the

result of my strength, nor of any

human strength. I just see the

strong and powerful hands of God

over Siloé’s growth.”

– Rev. Eloi Agbanou, La Communautéchrétienne Siloé, Montreal, QC

“ARISE Ministry is where hope lives!

What a profoundly, awe-inspiring

experience to see hope take hold in

someone’s life. Please pray for ARISE as

we continue to plant, tend and care for

the seeds of hope growing in the lives

of individuals involved in the sex trade.”

– Rev. Deb Rapport, ARISE Ministry, Toronto, ON

Presbyterians from across Canada joined together at the 2016 General Assembly

and explored what it means to be stewards of the

mysteries of God. Together we discussed important

issues and planned for the future. We passed the

Presbyterians Sharing budget and dreamed of

building God’s kingdom. We committed to sharing

in a wide range of ministries — encouraging and

equipping congregations, supporting inner city,

native, refugee, urban and remote ministries,

accompanying international partners — and so

much more! As stewards, we are called to work

together as one church, made up of and reaching

out to many peoples.

Together, we are making mission and ministry happen!

“Working together in service for others has

strengthened our faith as we support each other

and the wider community. There is great power

in prayer. We thank God for all who have

encouraged us in our journey of faith.”

– St. Luke’s Church, Bathurst, NB

“We are very thankful for your continued support of the

Ekwendeni Hospital Grace Fund. It goes a long way in

assisting the rural population whose average income is less

than a dollar a day. The Grace Fund helps to waive debts of

needy patients, and is the strongest sign of God's grace.”

– Patrick Tembo, Ekwendeni CCAP Mission Hospital, Malawi

A Message from Rev. Michelle Butterfield- Kocis 2016 Greetings Friends, Where has the time gone? I can hardly believe that very soon I will have been among you for a year! Franck, the kids and I cannot thank-you all enough for the warm hospitality we have received as we have begun our new life here among you. To the sessions of Knox and North Caradoc-St. Andrew’s my gratitude, for your support and encouragement as I traveled to and fro for nearly six months, explodes in a chorus of thanks! A BIG note of thanks to board members for making sure I had all that I needed to do my work each day and to the many generous folks who have gone out of your way to make my family and I feel at home. I am also so grateful for the generosity of Bob & Sharon Gillies and Wayne & Charlotte Gregory (with a special mention to Janet McGugan ;)) your willingness to have the Kocis family invade your homes filled us with an appreciation that is hard to reciprocate fully. Your generosity allowed us to better know the true blessing is has been to be called to minister here at Knox and North Caradoc-St. Andrew’s. And finally I am truly thankful to have & be working with great partners in worship! Thank-you Kathy & Rosemary for your gifts of music as they have blessed me and the churches. As I look toward to the year ahead I am reminded of two things: One, when I first came to preach the call I stated that I was not interested in keeping “the status quo”- meaning we are going to move in our ministry together (maybe even dance one day – lol.) We are not going to stand still. We are going to work together to impact our world around us. This reminds me of the Daffodil Principle – there is a story of a women in California who has since 1958 planted over 50, 000 daffodils, she has created a most beautiful and breathtaking scene! When asked how? She answered, “One bulb at a time.” Moving doesn’t always mean exhausting ourselves all at once! If we are precise like the daffodil lady slowly planting bulb after bulb in the end we will accomplish a beautiful and breathtaking scene! And two, I invite you to keep your eyes on God. Keep God at your center and go to God in prayer. And so I leave you with this Celtic prayer. Be thou a bright flame before me, Be thou a guiding star above me, Be thou a smooth path below me, Be thou a kindly shepherd behind me, Today - tonight - and forever. --- Columba (521-597) Irish monk/missionary in Scotland Deep Peace, Rev. Shelly

Session Report 2016

Respectfully submitted by Theresa Glithero, Clerk of Session Session wishes to express their appreciation to the Interim Moderator culminating in the arrival of the Rev. Michelle Butterfield-Kocis as the Minister of Word and Sacrament of North Caradoc – St. Andrew’s. The well attended formal induction service was held March 20th. We thank Rev. Shelly, as she is affectionately called, for her leadership and inspiring, thought provoking worship each week. We also welcomed her family, husband Franck, and children Franceska and Jakob. It is with regret that Session accepted the resignation of Doug Gillard, Children and Youth Coordinator. Doug capably led many insightful adult Bible Studies enlisting thoughtful and meaningful conversations from the attendants. He also coordinated the Church School program and provided lessons to those in attendance each week, as well as providing a variety of movies for discussion on Monday night movie nights. In celebration of his ministry at North Caradoc – St. Andrew’s, a Service of Thanksgiving and BBQ was held in the fall. We wish Doug well with many blessings as he continues to explore his call to ministry and his journey of faith. It is also with regret that the term of office for elders Lily Carrothers, Sharon Gillies and Nancy Tomchick had come to an end. The congregation thanks each of them for their leadership during their term in office. The congregation was thankful that Lily Carrothers, Theresa Glithero, Peter Grivich and Maureen Tomchick became ruling elders at a service in the fall. There were six Holy Communion worship services that took place this year with an average of 47 members and friends coming to the Lord’s Table to be fed. Communion worships took place February 14, April 8, July 17 (joint summer worship), October 2, November 27 and December 24. As well, communion was given to shut-ins during the year. We are thankful for the Hungarian-speaking members and friends of North Caradoc – St. Andrew’s. They held seven worship services during the year (the regular service in December was cancelled due to weather) including three Communion Worship services held Easter, Pentecost and Thanksgiving. An average of 32 members and friends came to the Lord’s Table. The Rev. Ferenz Szatmari conducted the services. There were two weddings from our church community. The first was held in May with Erin Corey and Ryan Blackburn exchanging vows. The second wedding in September united Cara DeRuiter and Jonathan Jacques. The congregation extends best wishes and much happiness to both couples. The congregation mourns the passing of George Skinner and John Dorrestijn. Their family and friends will sadly miss them. The lower hall of the church received a bright face-lift in January. The walls were painted by a dedicated group of volunteer painters. After the painting was complete, new flooring was

(Session Report Continued) installed. Thanks to everyone for their hard work and the patience of the congregation as regular fellowship during the renovation was disrupted. We are pleased to host ukulele practices within the church - CRACKERS. This is a group of dedicated people comprised of members of the congregation and the community. They hosted a concert on a Saturday with SOUP (Southwestern Ontario Ukulele Players) and culminated with a hot bowl of soup and crackers and good fellowship. There is also a vibrant book club that meets every month usually in the home of one of the participants. The titles are varied but the discussion is always exciting. A Maundy Thursday worship was held as well as an afternoon Good Friday service. North Caradoc – St. Andrew’s 163rd Anniversary service was celebrated May 1st with the special music provided by the Treble Makers. Lunch and fellowship followed the well-attended service. Elvis was in the building in June. The Anglican Priest from Lucan, the Rev. Matt Martin, the Elvis impersonator, provided a packed sanctuary with songs to sing and reminisce with Elvis. Thank you to the organizers for this unique fundraiser and the coveted scarves that some were lucky enough to acquire. The annual pork BBQ and corn roast was held in August at the McGugan farm - thanks Janet for your hospitality. The day started out with rain but prayers were answered with God providing a warm summer afternoon and evening. This event is the highlight of the summer and provides an opportunity to visit with friends and neighbours with good food and entertainment. Thank you to all the organizers and many volunteers. The very successful Countdown to Christmas bazaar was held in November. Many thanks to the organizers and many, many volunteers that baked, made meat pies, canned, sewed, knitted, crocheted, crafted and donated items for the odds and sods room. A very special thanks to the Hungarian woman who made mouth-watering cabbage rolls for sale. A cup of coffee with dessert or a hot chili lunch with dessert and a beverage could be purchased providing time to visit with friends and neighbours or friends that you hadn’t met before. The sanctuary was open for the entire duration of the bazaar for anyone wishing to relax with a complimentary cup of coffee while enjoying music provided by Kathy Gillard and her team of musicians as well as a powerpoint presentation. The Christmas season was a busy one. Rev. Shelly facilitated a thought provoking Advent Bible Study entitled Names for the Messiah by Walter Brueggemann. A group of interested people went carolling on a Saturday afternoon to appreciative recipients. The day ended with a pot luck dinner for anyone interested. The Sunday School children presented a Christmas pageant, The Wonder, to an appreciative audience. The candlelight Christmas Eve communion worship service began at nine o’clock with many members and families and friends attending. As well

(Session Report Continued) this year, a Christmas Day service was held jointly at Knox, Komoka beginning with a breakfast at 8:30 a.m. followed by the worship service at 9:30 a.m. Session wishes to thank the many who share in leadership and work tirelessly carrying out the work of our Lord in the day-to-day operation of the church. We thank our worship leaders, church school leaders, those who fill our sanctuary with music, those who organize fundraisers, those who organize fun activities, those who visit the sick and shut-ins, those who provide snacks after worship and clean up, those who ensure that the grounds and building are well maintained, those who prepare electronic and paper bulletins, those who keep the church finances in order, those who decorate inside and out, and the many others who freely give their time and talents serving our gracious Lord cheerfully in so many ways. Every individual is important to this congregation and we are thankful for your participation in worship each week. We give thanks to God for His continued presence with us as we endeavor to do His work in this community and grow in our own faith. North Caradoc - St. Andrew’s is a welcoming church to anyone visiting or attending regularly. The congregation is a living community of Jesus Christ. Session is humbled by the many who serve Christ actively, willingly and cheerfully without any thought of recognition. We are thankful for you, the congregation, for your ongoing support and prayers over this past year. Yours in Christ Your Session Members Marilyn Bailey, Lily Carrothers, Theresa Glithero, Wayne Gregory, Peter Grivich, Angela Osborne, Maureen Tomchick

Pre Authorized Remittance (PAR) Report 2016 Respectfully submitted by Janet Evans

This year we had 16 families taking part in the PAR program. This is one more family than last year. We are encouraging more families each year to join the PAR program. It allows families to plan their contributions to North Caradoc / St. Andrew’s church knowing that the same amount of money comes out of their bank account on or about the 20th of each month. There is no longer any need for you to continue with envelopes and there are giving cards in baskets at either front entrance of the church for every PAR member to put on the collection plate each week. As each new year begins we hope that members of PAR will also consider increasing their monthly giving’s. If you would like to join PAR or if you would like to increase your contribution for 2017 please contact Janet Evans at 519-264-2595. Ladies Aid Report 2016

Pastoral Care Report 2016 Prayerfully submitted by Carol Huston

Pastoral Care expands the pastoral visiting done by the minister and elders to provide continued support and companionship. An intentional visit on behalf of the church community helps confirm connection and remembrance of those who need spiritual care related to isolation, grief or illness or injury, as well as recognition of the joys of life in a new life, job, or home. Although a distinct team is not designated, many congregation members provide these connections for the members unable to attend worship services or take part in our church events. Thank you to all who minister to any who are in need of continued prayer and support through visits, chauffeuring, cards, gifts of food or supplies. Anyone who offers this type of support to others in the congregation is encouraged to ask if a visit or contact from Rev. Shelly would be welcome. The Prayer Chain links prayer and continued care by keeping many in our thoughts and sharing concern for friends and congregational family members. Please contact your elder or Theresa Glithero to communicate about anyone or things that you know are in need of prayer support or pastoral support. Visits have been welcomed and anticipated by many who look forward to continued contact with the church family. Hope and comfort can be communicated in our presence and in our actions to share news of church happenings, provide copies of sermons, bring gifts or cards, food or goodies, smiles and hugs, share prayer and scripture and talk about the challenges and joys of life in our church and in these times. We are thankful for Sharon Gillies for her generous service this past year to send correspondence from our congregation to those who are identified to us for thanksgiving, support of prayer and remembrance. In 2016 we acknowledge the loss and remember our friends Helen Varga, George Skinner and John Dorrestijn.

Mission and Outreach 2016 Submitted by Carol Huston

The Grace of God is extended to us in faith that we will share it through

action and prayer to reflect His greatest gift, Salvation to all. His Love multiplies when we give of ourselves in His Grace

to comfort the grieving, feed the hungry, clothe the naked and free the oppressed. Renewing Hope, Advancing Peace, Spreading Love and Sharing Joy to women, children, men and families through simple compassionate acts is the work of mission. Sincere gratitude for the generous support of talents, time, funds and prayer from all the congregation and our community residents to forward the mission and outreach initiatives and projects of 2016. NCSA missions continue to impact our communities and relieve some of the needs of regional, national and global concerns through many charities and organizations. Outreach to support the Women’s Rural Resource Centre of Strathroy in May through the Pink Gift Campaign helps those women and children who seek refuge have basic supplies to care for their basic needs. We delivered 3 boxes of toiletry and personal care items to be distributed within this local service agency. The Christmas Campaign funded $5,424 to allow the PWS&D to continue to advance the Water Project. This initiative will provide life sustaining water, hygiene education and tools to ensure safe water and better health to communities identified by PWS&D as a necessary service. The Giving Tree was adorned with many winter hats, scarves, mittens, blankets and gifts. These were delivered to the local Salvation Army before Christmas . NCSA budget items are helping to advance the mission to support the growth of our faith. This past summer, funds were provided to assist youth and adults to attend CY16 and children to attend Camp Kintail. Please talk with Rev, Shelly or your elder if you are interested in sharing in these rich traditions of Faith and Personal Growth staffed by a dynamic mix of creative and dedicated and faithful Christian Staff. We acknowledge the PCC goals in supporting the Canadian Foodgrains Bank, PWS&D and Presbyterian Sharing. In 2016 we shared the collective call for support and prayer for the victims of the Fort McMurray Wildfire, for improved maternal care worldwide, for compassion and extended acceptance of refugees, for a world of understanding and tolerance. In Great Hope and In God's Love and With God's Grace we pray for expanding Peace in our world for our communities.

Countdown to Christmas (Bazaar Report) 2016 Submitted by convenors: Theresa Glithero & Sharon Gillies

The 2nd annual North Caradoc-St. Andrew's Church Christmas bazaar was held Saturday, Nov. 12th, 2016, 10 am - 2 pm with lunch being served 11 to 1. It was another tremendous success and we would like to express our appreciation to all those who helped in any capacity as well as to the eager shoppers who came out to see what we had to offer. We didn't want to tinker too much with the success we had the year before so we once again showcased our bountiful bake table, homemade meat pies, our one-of-a-kind knitting and craft corner, the unique Odds and Sods room and of course, the delectable lunch room. We did add a few new features however, one being the delicious homemade fresh cabbage rolls expertly prepared by Elizabeth Tothfalusi, Anna & Steve Tapai & their team. They were sold out in no time and we thank them for their hard work and the generous donation that went towards our final tally. We also had a draw for various gift baskets donated by generous individuals and the money ($282) raised, went to the Caring Cupboard Foodbank in Mt. Brydges. Another new addition was a family of 3 wooden reindeer graciously made and donated by Denis Regnier which sparked a lively round of bidding. A highlight of the day was the music supplied by Kathy Gillard and her group of young musicians and singers. An ongoing concert held in the sanctuary gave time for reflection and relaxation for all who wandered in. Thank you to them and to the convenors who once again went above and beyond as well as their helpers. To the group of young ladies and gentlemen who jumped in to whatever role was asked of them, thank you. To the door greeters, lunch ticket ladies, elevator operators, set up and clean up crews, you were invaluable. Through the sale of the donated items as well as generous monetary donations, the final tally for 2016 was $4,950.00 which was given to the General Fund. We will see you again this year on Saturday, November 18th, same time, same place. The “Countdown” has begun.

Board of Managers Report 2016 Submitted by Janet McGugan

We were delighted this year to welcome Rev. Michelle Butterfield-Kocis as our new minister. This not only made things much nicer for everyone around here but it gave us a chance to move forward with planning and budgeting as a Board. The basement carpet was replaced by a beautiful new floor that can be cleaned more easily. This was financed by the Memorial Donations that had accumulated to date. Even though the floor was picked to match the existing painted walls, it was felt that it would be a good time to repaint. The ladies of the church provided the money and many volunteers worked hard to get it done before the floor was installed. And it looks really nice! The Board took the lead with the annual Pig Roast and very much appreciated the support and help from the rest of the congregation and community. Over $3,000 (after expenses) was raised and the food was served and everything put away before the rain came! The Board would also like to thank Penny and Darrell McComb for organizing the Elvis musical night. Everyone had a great time and $1,205 was raised. The personnel committee cared for the employees as needed. A 1.5% raise was approved by the Board and Session. Janet McGugan will be stepping down as Board chair (but remaining on the Board) and will be replaced by Brian Huston. Joanne Grivich will be replacing him as treasurer. Thank you to all for your generous gifts of time and money over the past year. We look forward to more growth with our new minister and the Board accepts the challenge to manage everything in order to keep the building standing and functioning and the employees happy! 2016 Board of Managers Board Chair: Janet McGugan Secretary: Charlotte Gauthier-Gregory Members: Darrell McComb, Dan Walker, Bob Gillies, Peter Grivich, Jan Salomons, Treasurer and Co-Treasurer: Brian Huston and Joanne Grivich

Bequests, Designated Donations and Planned Giving 2016 Submitted by Brian Huston

In 2016, a designated donation of $5,000 was made by a family to be used for a project at a future date. This donation, along with previous ones from the family, brings the total of this designated donation to $30,000. Session will be working with the donors to develop the future use for this donation. These monies will remain under the care of the Trustees until the project is developed. No bequests were received in 2016. Trustees' Report 2016

Respectfully remitted, Maureen Tomchick, Doug Cudney and Jan Salomons This year again the Trustees were not called upon to supplement congregational operations so all interest earned stayed with the Trustees and an additional $5,000 was gifted for a cause yet to be determined. This donation plus interest earned increased the Trustee's holdings by $11,408 growing the funds under Trustee administration from $316,831 to $328,239. Falling interest rates are having a significant effect on the earnings on our investments. Term deposits #012 and #013 matured and were re-invested for 5 years at the lower rate of return (2.15% i.s.o. 3.10%). This reduces our average annual rate of return from 2.31% to 1.91%. Our Financial institution also changed the features of the Bonus Saving account by significantly lowering the rate of return. This prompted the trustees to move $45,000 to a 3 year term deposit with a somewhat better return. This still leaves enough in the account should the need arise to supplement church operations. What does it mean to be a steward of God’smysteries? Answering God’s call requires us to become comfortable with not knowing, to have the courage to take up permanentresidence in uncertainty, and to grow familiarwith strangeness. When we do this, we are leftwith nothing but faith, which drives us towardsunderstanding.

The call to be a steward of the mysteries ofGod respects and embraces what we don’tknow, while honouring and building on whatwe do know about God. The truth of God’smysteries is, ultimately, a freeing truth. We donot know everything. We cannot. We are finiteand God is infinite. We are conditioned andGod is unconditional. This freedom makesroom for wonder and for joy.

How can we be good stewards of thesemysteries in our faith and in our churches?

u Remind each other, often, that God is Godand we are not. Even when this seems alittle frightening, it is our faith that allows us to trust in the goodness and love of this overwhelming mystery.

u Recognize that God is often at that placewhere words stop and cannot go anyfurther, and honour that place. Seek it out.

u Invite wonder. Become comfortable withambiguity. Let some things be and stayunexplainable and unknowable and

beyond experience in a way that evokesreverence and awe.

u Study the Scriptures, rather than try toexplain them. Wrestle with questions, and try not to dismiss or shut them down.Questions can be as powerful as answersand the asking almost always yields ablessing.

u Remember that God is beyond fulldescription and definition. Think broadlyabout God using images, names, andunderstandings from the Scriptures, sacredmusic, and respected theologians.

u Resist the temptation to box God in, to ironGod out, or to present God as a package all done up with pretty paper!

u Be a witness. Point to the love of God, the greatness of God, the surprising, free, untamed nature of God and invite peopleinto a deeper trust.

We are entrusted with the privilege ofstewarding and tending God’s mysteries, as we seek to love and serve the Living God.And if we are to be trustworthy stewards ofthe mysteries of God, we must be people ofprayer, who seek to know God’s nature bylistening for God’s voice.
