New space enhanced our services and ability to testIn 2016, we opened our new service center in the lower level of our main office location. With the new and expanded space, we’re able to test out new approaches to improve our services and reach more people. We are now open more hours, have added a drop-off option for tax preparation, and are able to provide services in a space that customers have said is professional and dignified.

Hosted our first-ever taxathonIn order to meet the demand during our busiest weekend of the year, we hosted our first-ever, two-day, 24-hour tax preparation marathon. We served 222 taxpayers, completed 437 tax returns, returned $744,625 in refunds, and 59 people saved some of their refunds. The fun and energetic event garnered coverage from two TV stations and has been replicated by free tax prep sites in other states.

Grew our individual giving programIn 2016, we raised more than $230,000 from individual donations, more than ever before. Individual donations give nonprofit organizations diversity and flexibility in funding and are key to long-term health. 650 people generously supported our work by giving through appeals, workplace campaigns, specific asks and events like Give to the Max Day, where we raised nearly $87,000.

Began the test phase of our FAIR InitiativeFinancial Access in Reach (FAIR) is an initiative led by P+P aimed at helping financially-underserved consumers move from wealth-stripping products to wealth-building ones by marketing and distributing — through alternative channels — a set of products that support transacting, saving, and building credit. In December, we publicly announced the bank partner, Guaranty Bank, and began enrolling people in the checking, saving, and credit builder products to reach our beta test goal of 50 users.

Elevated our leadership in the fieldWe continued to build our leadership locally and nationally. Staff presented at a variety of events, forums, and webinars, and contributed to publications, toolkits and blogs that help to inform and shape the field. Examples include Tracy Fischman being called on by several local and national funders to further advance a cohesive strategy to address financial insecurity. In addition, the tax team of Carla Gainey, Katy Schultz, Tom Larson, Heather Frank, and Willie Gregg supported the IRS in testing and launching their new software, TaxSlayer, that free tax prep sites across the country began to use in 2017. Stacy Opitz worked with national partners to advise and launch an awareness campaign on delayed refunds and Taylor Putz was selected to serve on the first Taxpayer Opportunity Network’s Policy Advocacy Committee at the Corporation for Enterprise Development (CFED).
