Our Healthy Families Program for vulnerable first-time parents was impacted by the Illinois state budget impasse resulting in no funding from the Department of Human Services for most of the year. Thanks to our generous donors, we were able to continue providing services to first-time parents, although we did have to scale back our staff and the home visitation services.

Our Foster Care Program and our adolescent group homes provided over 22,560 days of care to abused and neglected children and adolescents. Our Jennings Group Home for girls received a grant from the Bright Horizons Foundation to renovate a room in the home and turn it into a “Bright Space.”

The older adolescent males in our Transitional Living Program are living in a home like setting. With the guidance of our staff, these residents are advancing their education and working in the community as they prepare for independent living.

Shelter has a long successful history in meeting the immediate needs of abused and neglected children, providing them with a safe place to stay. We focus on restoring their emotional and physical health with a goal of recapturing their childhoods. These are vulnerable children and we know that whatever we do for them now will have a lasting and profound effect on their future.

Shelter’s services once again were awarded full reaccreditation by the Council on Accreditation (COA), an international, independent agency. Meeting COA’s highest standards for practices, policies, and procedures is an ongoing endeavor for staff and the Board of Directors. Accreditation means that children and their families are receiving quality services.
