Event ambassadors supplying entertainment throughout the show included Tom Burlinson, Dan Steers and Dr Harry Cooper, while Katharine Farrell and her talented Arabian Warmblood Luxor 0118 (DE) gave an extraordinary Grand Prix Dressage Freestyle exhibition.

Cindy Reich’s wonderful write-up along with the other judges’ reports certainly covers the major topics from this innovative show. Next issue we will share some heartwarming stories from competitors.

Cindy Reich: I absolutely love judging in Australia and I had judged this show a number of years ago and was looking forward to seeing what the horses looked like this time. It was a homecoming in the fact that Scott Benjamin and Allan Preston had brought in some of the crack team that ran the Scottsdale and Las Vegas shows. So I was delighted to see familiar Aussie faces and also American ones at the show.

I was intrigued at the ambitious program that surrounded the show in terms of entertainment, the artisan market and

children’s events. The show committee had really worked hard to put together what would be a very family friendly and good day out whether you knew anything about horses or not. This is a good strategy as “destination” shows are doing better in the USA, where people can do other activities while at the show, which encourages more outside attendance and more entries.

Some other changes to this show since I judged it last was the use of the score card to advance horses into the championship classes which were then judged comparatively. The score card gives every owner feedback on their individual horse but in the championship, the judges are free to use the horse that most impresses them. I know it upsets some people if they have a high scoring horse that then fails to win the championship, however, some high score horses may still be second on a single judge’s card, who then still prefers that horse. Or, the high scoring horse may have an off day in the championship ring. Or a lower scoring horse might have a superb show in the championship. In any case, it makes the championships more exciting and

15

nothing is a sure thing. So it felt much like “home” on both sides of the hemisphere.

The show for our panel (myself, Claudia Darius, Jack Maritz, Annette Vickery and Meike Bigg) started with the Senior Geldings and the quality of geldings I’ve found is always high in Australia. I liked the fact that all preliminary classes were judged using the score card system, however, that simply put horses in the finals or not. On each evening of the show, the halter finals and some performance were held and those classes were judged comparatively. There were three awards in each of the Purebred Halter Champion classes – Gold, Silver and Bronze. All garlands were hand-made by Allan Preston and were absolutely gorgeous!

For the first time this year, during the evening halter championships, each judge was called forward and the top three horses on their card were lined up in front of them. This created a great deal of suspense and excitement as the tension built. The stands were wild with cheering spectators and that made the show a lot more fun and exciting!

Gold Champion Senior Purebred Gelding was the winner of the 4-6 year old class, Magnetic MI. He had actually achieved a cumulative score of 543.5 but prevailed over Silver Champion Viva Espana who had a total of 544. Magnetic MI, a beautiful rich bay gelding was especially short and strong in the back and had an exceptional long and well sloped shoulder, both very important traits for a gelding. Chase KA was the Silver Champion and the typey grey Viva Espana, the winner of the Purebred Senior Gelding class for 10 and over, took the Bronze garland. Gold Champion Junior Gelding was a double Gold win for the super typey bay Georgio KA and very correct and strong bodied grey, Chrome MI with Metaxa W taking Bronze. (Editor’s note: For the first time in the history of the show two classes had dual championship awards; the Arabian Junior Gelding and Arabian Ridden Mare.)

I love judging Arabian Derivatives, it is one of the things I love most about judging in Australia. And this year did not disappoint! In fact, the whole judging panel often had the same horses in the top two or three places. A couple

that caught my attention were the Arabian Pony stallion Woranora Ninja. This striking black sabino was extremely well balanced and very typey, showing his Welsh background in the head. Excellent Arabian Pony stallion! Champion Senior Arabian Warmblood Mare, Relentless R was an exceptional mare with a body that was so strong and correct, yet with a lot of refinement and type. You could see the Arabian influence yet she was a beautifully built Warmblood. I have to mention the Senior Partbred mare, Mulawa Ballerina who is not only a beautiful mare but was one of the best moving horses in-hand at the show and I awarded her the maximum of 20 points for movement. She maintained a dynamic suspended trot all the way around the arena coming in and gave the exact same trot going out, proving it is her natural way of going, not a manufactured “entrance” trot. Senior Champion Anglo-Arabian Mare, Show Me The Roses was a perfect combination of Thoroughbred and Arabian in terms of type, refinement and structure. This feminine mare really caught my eye.

Going back to the purebred championships, the Yearling Filly Gold Champion, Venecia MI was a total package filly with an abundance of type and refinement, but with the great length of hip and croup the Mulawa horses consistently carry. Junior Champion Filly, Klassical Devotion MI

won the 3-year-old filly class with a score of 548. She has a very dry and refined head, is very clean through the throatlatch with a great turn or “hook” to her mitbah. Her presence and animation only added to her allure and she is a great representative of the next breeding generation for Mulawa. Not to be outdone, Klassical Presence MI took the Purebred Senior Mare Championship in a unanimous decision of all five judges!

The Yearling Colt Gold winner was another unanimous decision, as Echos of Tomorrow took the gold garland. This interestingly bred colt is by a Marwan Al Shaqab son bred to a Marwan daughter with both sire and dam out of daughters of Echo Magnifficoo. Certainly it appears the intensively linebred son of Marwan is producing well.

Junior Gold Champion Colt was the bay Renaissance, winner of the 3-year-old colt class. He combined his extreme type, strength of body and masculinity to a high degree. The Senior Purebred Stallion Championship had everyone on the edge of their seats. The excitement was electric as a deep class with several previous National Champions entered the arena. Once the cards were handed in, each judge was asked to step forward and their top three picks lined up in front of them. And the crowd went wild – it was a unanimous win for Saudi El Perseus. This Brazilian-bred son of Perseus El Jamaal out of Silk El Jamaal was bred by the incomparable Lenita Perroy of Haras Meia Lua. It was a fitting and very exciting end to the last evening of a great show!

A few other observations I would like to pass on. Having Tom Burlinson appear was fantastic. For this yank, getting to

see the “Man From Snowy River” whom I had a fierce crush on when the movie came out – getting to see him some thirty years on was still a thrill. Dapper Dan was very funny and enjoyable, and it was nice to see Mulawa Bronze Wings not only acting as the demonstration horse for Dapper Dan but also pulling double duty by carrying Tom into the arena to sing the National Anthem.

Finally, as we still struggle in the US and in other countries to curb some of the shanking and threats with whips in the show arena, I want to congratulate the Australian Arabian show community for figuring it out with your yellow and red card system. I know that when I come to Australia I will not see horses being shanked or threatened with whips. Thank you for that.

From beginning to end, this Australian National Championship show was engaging and entertaining! While change is hard to accept, I hope the response to this new way of putting on a show was positive. Everyone in the Arabian horse show world has had to adapt or perish in this current economic situation. Thinking outside the box and doing different things to attract both spectators and exhibitors is going to be the new normal. From a judge’s perspective it was a great show to judge. And as always, I consider it a huge honor to be asked to judge and wish to thank the entire show committee for the opportunity and Allan Preson and Scott Benjamin for putting on a great show!

Annette Vickery: It was an honour to be invited by the Board of the AHSA

to judge at the Championships. We had some very good quality exhibits in both Arabian and Derivative classes. I applaud the decision to have each of the judge’s placings in each championship class line-up for the audience to see each judge’s choices.

It was pleasing that the AHSA’s horse welfare measures are resulting in less stress for the horses. Only the horses actually being judged were permitted to be stood-up during the championship. I was pleased there were very few horses that appeared intimidated whilst showing.

The point score system of judging helps exhibitors see where the judges scored their horse for each category. It also helps with horse welfare, as an unhappy horse will rarely show well or score highly for movement, thus the point score system of judging is encouraging happy and confident performances from the horses.

I thoroughly enjoyed my judging experience and was privileged to witness the competitors’ great sportsmanship coupled with the versatility of the Arabian horse, with numerous competitors showing their horse in both the halter and performance classes.

The Senior Purebred Mare was outstanding, very feminine, with great movement. I was impressed with the Senior Champion Stallion, a balanced individual who showed very well. I also thought the Yearling Colt was a lovely youngster who shows great promise. In the derivatives there was a bay filly

who was outstanding, Girlfriend FF, she was a quality filly who moved so well. The Arabian Pony Stallion was a top quality pony, well balanced and a great mover.

It was a privilege to judge with such an esteemed panel of judges from both overseas and Australia. The placings in the championships showed consistency across the panel. I would like to commend the Board and the show management team who went to great lengths to ensure everything was well organised and achieved a successful transition to a great new format. The entertainment was a great success. I know several members of the judging panel were very excited to get a photo with the charming Tom Burlinson!

Allanah Yu: It was an absolute honour and pleasure to judge at the Championships. The new format and incredible entertainment was a big hit. Congratulations must go out to the organising committee, competitors, sponsors and volunteers who worked tirelessly to support this show and made it such a huge success.

I was very impressed with the quality of horses and especially with how strong the competition was in various classes. The Partbred Arabian Ridden Mare was absolutely beautiful and of such quality, who also won her led section. The Arabian Show Hunter Gelding class was very strong with a superb line-up of horses. The Arabian Derivative Show Hunter Small & Large Hack classes were highly competitive. To be able to choose from such a quality line-up of horses was very rewarding. I was happy

to see that a number of these horses were successful throughout the show, receiving multiple awards across various classes.

The harness horse worked beautifully and was a real pleasure to watch and sash as champion. The open hack classes for both led and ridden sections were a new initiative this year. Again, there was superb quality in all classes with the beautiful mare claiming both championship titles. The Bridle Path Hack classes were well supported and hotly contested. The youth riders were encouraging and supportive of each other and I heard many congratulations being shared amongst them. The Arabian Stallion, Mare and Gelding under saddle classes were of top quality with a highly competitive edge in the finals night.

Meeting Tom Burlinson was the perfect way to top off what was an amazing show.

Clint Bilson: Well, what a show. I was so thrilled to be able to judge a lot of wonderful horses at this year’s show. The majority of horses presented were well and truly above standard. I think it’s fair to say that after a couple of classes anyone following my decisions would have seen what I was looking for in my winners. I loved a horse to travel freely and evenly over the ground, for most parts this was the case. Yes, I was forgiving of a little hiccup here and there as these horses are show horses and not robots.

There were a few standouts for me. I wish I had any of them in my stable. Firstly the Purebred Arabian Ridden

Stallion winner Aamahni, his ethereal beauty and excellent paces, piloted by a beautifully presented rider just brought a smile to my face the moment he entered the ring. Secondly the Arabian Warmblood mare ESK Versace was just the most beautiful mare and her work and movement was amazing. Thirdly the black Arabian Riding Pony mare Karma Park National Girl won the led and ridden challenges and she was just to die for. She scooted across the ground effortlessly and was just a beautiful picture to watch. If I had to pick a downer I would say some of the riders would do a lot better letting go of the reins a few inches and trusting their horses to travel better. I know when I asked for it in a couple of classes all the horses went so much sweeter. What a thrill, I am still beaming at being given the chance to judge some absolute stars.

Mieke Bigg: It was a great honour to be asked to judge at this prestige show. The Championships attracts the best horses in the country and it was a pleasure to judge these quality horses. I enjoyed judging beside such renowned judges. I congratulate the committee, competitors, sponsors and all the helpers for running such a great event which was such a wonderful success.

The purebred halter classes saw such quality and horses with type and movement and good conformation. I loved the new idea of the final night classes and the winners were of such quality. The Gold winner in the stallion section was a magnificent example of a purebred stallion. I was very impressed with all the Gold and Silver winners on the final nights.

In the Derivative Arabian section I particularly loved the ponies and Arabian Warmblood crosses which have improved greatly over the years. We are seeing such great riding type horses and much better movement than years gone by. I had the pleasure to judge some of the youth classes, which were a delight. Such good sportsmanship shown by the youth as they congratulated each other. The Lead Rein Rider class was just wonderful to see, the winner has such a great future as a rider. I judged the rider classes and the winners were outstanding and showed such talent and were wonderful competitors.

I am pleased to see the quality of horses improving and love the new concept of the Show. The future holds great heights for the Arabian horse and the Australian Arabian National Championships.
