2016 Minutes of the Annual Celebration

The 111th Annual Celebration was held on October 10, 2016 at Southlake Baptist Church in Waxahachie. Welcome was given by Richard Cody and scripture was read by Herman Martinez. Greeting was given to all by Chip Sebring, Pastor of Southlake. Richard Cody presented plaques to Chip Sebring and Lois Robinette for their service on the Leadership Team. Kathryne Boroughs gave a report on the Ellis Christian Women’s Job Corp and invited everyone to the upcoming Fundrais-er Dinner. Cindy Wesch shared about her experience with Ellis Christian Disaster Relief and encouraged those who can to volunteer. Motion was made to accept new members for the Leadership Team and passed. Motion was made to accept the proposed budget for 2016-2017, and it was accepted. The meetingthen moved into the installation portion of the program. Bob Dean, the DOM of Dallas Bap-tist Association delivered a Charge to the Churches of Ellis Baptist Association and then Bruce Prindle, Pastor of FBC Midlothian delivered a Charge to the Director. Larry Johnson led those present in a time of prayer and invited everyone to pray over Richard and his wife and family as he takes on the new role of Executive Director of Ellis Baptist Association (EBA). Richard Cody then shared his vision of “Where do we go from here?”. He shared a little about how he came to be at the EBA and then shared about some things that the Lord has laid upon his heart as he sees EBA going forward. Richard hopes that church planting will play a large role and also that there needs to be revitalization for existing churches as well. Lead-ership development will play a big part as well and the work in Honduras through 61 Isaiah Ministries, will always be a part of what EBA supports. Looking into the next year, EBA will be renewing and expanding the website and how it is used. Steve Gilley, Pastor of FBC Milford, closed the celebration with prayer.

2016 ANNUAL REPORT

Another great year has been recorded for Christian camping at Latham Springs Camp & Retreat Center. This marks the 93rd year that Latham Springs has been serving God’s people.

Total Attendance: 20,141 Professions of Faith: 740 Rededications: 602 Special Service: 43 Total Public Decisions: 1606

10,194 campers attended the 10 weeks of summer camp sessions. A special ‘thanks’ goes out to all those whose hard work and dedication made each week of camp a success.

Several building and renovation projects were completed this past year: A new 66+ person dormitory facility was completed before summer. This new dorm has 3 sections that sleep 22 each, and has an adjoining meet-ing room for each section. The interior of the auditorium was re-painted/re-furbished. The dining hall had new flooring installed along with new, round tables for retreat season use. Volunteer Hall meeting room also had new flooring installed along with fresh paint.

Building plans are in the final stages of completion for the new adult conference center. A ceremonial ground- breaking ceremony was held in April with a number of convention, associational, and church representatives in attendance. The actual ground-breaking for the foundation is scheduled for October. This new facility will include approximately 80 motel type rooms, a worship center, several conference rooms, and a lobby/welcome center. The new conference center will be located on the newly acquired property and will overlook Lake Latham. Please contact the office to find out how you can help support this project.

Latham Springs hosted it’s first associational youth camp in 2016. There were 570 in attendance, representing 28 different churches. The camp was a great success and there were 14 known first time professions of faith.

Exciting days are ahead for the ministry of Latham Springs. The Board of Trustees continues to promote the process that will lead to the expansion of facilities to enhance this great ministry. Please remember that Latham Springs is not funded by any state or national conventions, and depends on camp fees and your gifts to operate. The staff and trustees of Latham Springs wish to thank you for your support during the past year. We pray that this cooperative mission effort to reach and minister to individuals and groups might continue to bring glory to HIM.

Please call the Latham Springs office to let us know how we can help with your camp or retreat needs.

Professions of Faith: 740 Rededications: 602 Special Service: 43 Total Public Decisions: 1606 10,194 campers attended the 10 weeks of summer camp sessions. A special ‘thanks’ goes out to all those whose hard work and dedication made each week of camp a success. Several building and renovation projects were completed this past year: A new 66+ person dormitory facility was completed before summer. This new dorm has 3 sections that sleep 22 each, and has an adjoining meeting room for each section. The interior of the auditorium was re-painted/re-furbished. The dining hall had new flooring installed along with new, round tables for retreat season use. Volunteer Hall meeting room also had new flooring installed along with fresh paint.

Building plans are in the final stages of completion for the new adult conference center. A ceremonial ground-breaking ceremony was held in April with a number of convention, associational, and church representatives in attendance.

Ellis Christian Women’s Job Corps

This year has been fantastic. We have had seven women in the spring class and now have seven women in the fall class.

The spring class had three women to accept Christ. I had the privilege to lead one of the women’s husband to the Lord and then the privilege to lead her oldest daughter to the Lord. There were several different kinds of problems but God help growth come through them all. Six or seven weeks in we see a tremendous change in attitudes and actions. Each lady gets a mentor that is their cheerleader and confidant. These are Christian women who are willing to give an hour each week to meet with their merea (friend).

The fall class started August twenty second. We had eight start. One has dropped out because of sickness. Now we have seven, the perfect number. We are about half way through this session. Changes are also noted with this class. We are learning about Abraham and the consequences for what he did. The bumps in the road have come. We are learning to conquer those bumps by looking up. This is a good class . They will graduate in December.

God keeps blessing . Thank for your prayers and support.

In His Service,Kathryne BoroughsExecutive Director, Ellis CWJC

Church Planting

This year has been the year of transition. As Richard moved from Church Planting Associate to Execu-tive Director it has allowed us to make changes to our structure. The Leadership Team approved using a church planting team. The job description was approved at a recent leadership team meeting. It is listed below. Aaron Clayton will serve as the leader for the team. We are in the process of forming this team. This is the job description that will be used when looking for team members.

EBA Church Planting Team Job Description

The growth of Ellis County is staggering for a sleepy community. We continue to net about 11 people every day. This past year we have seen two of our churches start spanish speaking ministries, one in Ennis and the other in Waxahachie. One is showing stability and the other is in its infancy. We are also in the planning stages of a spanish speaking ministry in the Ferris area.

Probably the greatest challenge will be in the northwest corner of the county. It is where Mansfield, Grand Prairie and Midlothian come together. There are over 8,000 single family homes planned for that area alone. We have one EBA church in that area. Fortunately, there is an Arlington/Mansfield church, that is moving there, that will be a good partner.

Our new proposed budget doubles the amount allocated for church planting. This will probably be the norm over the next few years until the need changes.

Royal Ambassadors / Challengers Report 2016

Royal Ambassadors (RAs) is the Missions Education group for boys in grades 1-6. Challengers is the Mission Education grouping for young men in grades 7-12. At the present time, there are four churches in the Ellis Baptist Association that have active groups.

The RA Races held on April 17, 2016 at First Baptist Church Maypearl, were a huge success! There was an exciting increase in participation from last year. Last year there were 18 racers, and this year there were a total of 31 racers and 3 churches were represented!

Ellis Christian Disaster Relief

It has been an extremely busy year for ECDR beginning with the tornadoes that hit Ellis and Dallas Counties the day after Christmas 2015. One or more of our units has been deployed to a disaster every month of this year through September.

Our stated purpose is to share the message of Jesus Christ and to take a few tools when we do it. ECDR is blessed to have a generator unit, a tent unit, a shower/laundry unit, a clean out unit, and a box unit. We join with Cleburne chainsaw unit when needed. Through unit agreements we serve with Texas Baptist Men wherever we are needed.

To list all of the events of this year would be long and boring, so let me list the places we have served:

(Our Tent and Generator units have been used multiple times for local events)

We have been blessed to receive the donation of a 40’ shipping container to store boxes in.

We have also been given a John Deere 5310 Tractor with front end loader and scraper bucket. It includes a grapple bucket. We hope to start a heavy equipment unit to support chain saw and clean out operations. We continue to pray for a 1 ton dually truck to pull units. We also continue to pray for volunteers to staff these units.

I have included a thank you we received from a flood victim in Louisiana.

Dear Pastor,My name is Jo Ann, I live in the village of Estherwood Louisiana.I am the caregivers of my 84 and 78 year old parents. I live in their yardin a camper to be close to them. They did not have flood insurance. I didnot get water in my camper but my parents got almost a foot of water in their home. The Texas Baptist Men disaster crew came in and tore out the walls and floors and sprayed for the mold. We were truly blessed to have them. I hope I am sending this to the correct Eastridge Baptist Church. I was given a card made by a little girl from this church with hearts cut out. I want this little girl to know how much she has touched my heart. She gave me faith and hope that we will get through this try-ing time in our life. So from my Parents John and Jenell and myself and my husband Larry, we thank her so much and may God bless her and her family and her church.

I have included a picture of the house while flooded and the trailer fromthe crew.

Thank you so much,Jo Ann

Celebrating the Work in Honduras

It has been an amazing year of growth for the kingdom and the ministry here inHonduras. The kingdom has grown through the salvation of new believers; the church body as grown through amazing worship services; pastors and leaders have grown through intense training; individuals have grown closer to freedom from poverty and slavery to sin; a generation is growing through a youth meeting and ministry at Abundant Life Christian School; and our team continues to grow. We wanted to take a moment to remind everyone of the Vision here in Honduras. The vision is prayer, gospel saturation, church planting, empowering local leaders, and meeting human need. We believe one of the greatest reasons to celebrate is the growth of prayer. Last year we began the 9:38 Prayer Initiative, which is based out of Matthew 9:38. The harvest is so plentiful in Honduras and we believe God is answering the prayers for more workers. For the last year we have been inviting individuals to join us at 9:38am each day to pray for the workers, and people are responding. God is answering these prayers! This year we invited a local Honduran leader to join our team. Her name is Edith. She was a former student from the bilingual school that the Hopkins teach at. In addition to Edith, we have seen numerous pastors catch the vision of sharing the Gospel and ministering to their local communities. In addition to these local leaders stepping up to participate in the harvest, there has been almost 200 people serving on 16 mission teams come to Honduras this year to answer the call. This summer we launched the summer missionary program. 8 individuals came to serve alongside us this summer to assist with the summer mission teams. In September 2016 we began inviting local pastors and leaders here in Honduras to join us at 9:38am in prayer. We are so excited to see how God is answering this prayer of raising up local workers to participate in the harvest. When it comes to Gospel Saturation, we believe God has called us to share the Gospelthrough personal relationships, mission teams, and Radio Rio de Dios. We have had anincredible year with the staff of Radio Rio de Dios. About 180 people have accepted Christ in 2016 through the radio station. The radio staff is phenomenal. We meet regularly and discuss ways we can minister to the listening audience. In September, we hosted our first event in more than two years for the community. We held a special event for a Honduran holiday called “Children’s Day”. There were about 150 people who attended. We played games with all the children, shared the Gospel, and finished with a piñata. Our team is currently planning more events to minister through the radio waves and through events hosted by the radio station. Sharing the Gospel can be difficult in Honduras mainly because everyone says they are a Christian. This year through personal relationships and through the mission teams, many have accepted Christ and we were able to break the religious barrier of believing in Jesus versus having faith that he is our personal savior.

When it comes to planting churches, this is the area we have probably focused on theleast. Several years ago we realized that the harvest was plentiful, but the workers were so few. So we took a step back and began focusing on the churches that were already established. Instead of the missionaries starting new churches, it is our vision that the local leaders start new churches. In some places we have had to go back to the basics, in other places we have spent time teaching, motivating, and encouraging local leaders to go beyond their own village and begin thinking about the surrounding villages. It is our hope that in the coming year, pastors and leaders will begin stepping up and going out to plant new churches. In the area of Empowering Local Leaders, we have probably spent the most time thisyear. We have established several regional discipleship groups which we attempt to meet with on a weekly basis. We also partnered with two local missionaries to host a pastor training school. Eight of our pastors have been attending this once a month, three day training for the past 7 months. We have been teaching the pastors how to study the bible and how to preach. In October these pastors will graduate. In 2015 a local youth group was started by Frank and Melyssa. They meet each week with teenagers from Gracias and empower them to reach into their community. Frank and Melyssa have worked hard to not just have a youth group that meets at that church, but they have been going to the park each month teaching their youth group how to minister to children begging for food and who are having difficulties at home. We have also seen tremendous growth in our ministry at Abundant Life Christian School. Through teaching at the school, we are breaking the cycle of poverty and giving kids an education that they can not get in public schools here. In addition to educating students, Kristi graduated with her degree in School Counseling and has been using that degree to help students who are struggling with personal, home, and learning problems. We believe our students are the future leaders of Honduras and we are so blessed to get to train and empower them as teenagers. In 2015 we used about 8 translators to help with our mission teams. This year we used over 20 different students. This is an amazing opportunity because not only do we get to teach at the school, but we get to invite the students to apply and live out their faith. The ministry at the school is more than just students. Kristi mentors the North American teachers, many of whom are first year teachers, and helps them become empowered and trained to raise up this future generation. Kristi also works with the school administration as a liaison and as a advisor for how to improve the school and education system of Abundant Life Christian School. Finally, we are happy to celebrate our vision of meeting Human Need. We believemeeting human need falls into two categories. One of those categories is crisis relief. We are asked sometimes on a weekly basis to help people who have medical needs and hunger needs. This year we have been able to help more than 25 families with food packets during times of crisis. We have also helped many people with medical needs ranging from rare

Page 31: 2016 Book of Minuteseba.life/wp-content/uploads/2018/01/2016-Book-of-Minutes.pdf · 2016 Book of Minutes 111th Annual Celebration Monday Southlake Baptist Church October 10, 2016

parasitic diseases, cleft palates, hernias, respiratory infections, diabetes, loss of hearing, cancers, severe infections, and most recently spinal bifida. Some of the medical assistance is simply to accompany those in need to a doctor. Other times this requires long-term weekly and sometimes daily medical care. The second category of meeting human need is finding long-term solutions to crisis relief. We are so proud of the establishment of the Lenca Hunger Farm at the radio station. We were able to grow more than 40 pounds of beans, 300 pounds of corn, 106 pounds of pork, and 50 pounds of fish so far this year. We are currently waiting on the second harvest of the year of corn and fish, and we are are about to plant our second crop of beans. It is our vision that the Lenca Hunger Farm become a tool for local pastors and not just the missionaries. It is our hope that local pastors can use the resources provided by the Hunger Farm to minister themselves to those in their community. Before the year ends we hope to add a chicken and possibly goat project to the Hunger Farm. We are also hoping to drill a well for the fish project and to have a source of water for irrigation so that we can grow crops year round. Other forms of long-term relief include financial training. We believe many people can rise out of poverty with the proper financial education. Thanks to some special people who came to Honduras this year, we have begun combining financial education with small-micro business projects. In August we helped a family establish a small chicken business and we are working with them weekly on how to manage their chickens, sell their eggs, and record and save their finances. As we look to 2017 we are excited about all the possibilities. We believe that because of the concentrated and dedicated efforts of the 9:38 Prayer Initiative, we will see more both nationally and internationally answer the call to participate in the Harvest. We believe we are going to see more salvations through Radio Rio de Dios, personal relationships, and mission teams. We are anticipating a total of 20 mission teams in 2017. It is our hope to see our first pastor plant his first church in 2017. We will be continuing our weekly discipleship groups and pastor training this coming year. We anticipate great growth in finding long-term solutions to the medical and physical poverty. However, we must not forget that all of the hope, vision, and dreams we have for 2017 are to fight the spiritual bondage and poverty the Lenca people face in Honduras. Our ultimate goal is to see 61 Isaiah be more than a ministry name, but to become the living and active Word of God.“The Spirit of the Sovereign Lord is on me,because the Lord has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted,to proclaim freedom for the captives and release from darkness for the prisoners.”
