Camp Meeting 2016: Higher Ground!

A Message from the President, Dr. Kenneth Manders

Come Up, On Higher Ground!

Our Camp Meeting theme, Higher Ground, is derived from the words of a song. There is something powerful about spiritual songs! God, Himself, knows the power of a song, and commanded Israel to sing His Word! Songs inspire us; soothe us; encourage, motivate and move us. Jesus often expressed the gladness of His heart by singing psalms and heavenly songs. We are told that His praises banish evil angels, and through song He met temptation. He held communion with heaven with a song. Through a song temptations lose their power; life takes on new meaning, and purpose, and a song imparts gladness to the soul. A spiritual song is a weapon that can help de-feat the enemies’ power. Higher Ground, written by Johnson Oatman, Jr., has been a favorite with many Christians since it was first published. It expresses so well the heart’s desire for a deeper spiritual life, continuing on a higher plane of fellowship with God than we have ever be-fore experienced. Each stanza of this song echoes the cry and craving of the human heart for a closer connection with the Creator. Praise God that con-nection is made available through the gift, and grace of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. It is the prayer of this administration that the spiritual activities of Camp Meeting 2016 will help you to place the feet of your spiritual life on Higher Ground, in preparation for service here, and the life to come.

WELCOME TO CAMP MEETING 2016

THEME SONG

HIGHER GROUND

I’m pressing on the upward way, New heights I’m gaining every day;

Still praying as I onward bound, “Lord, plant my feet on higher ground.”

Refrain:

Lord, lift me up, and I shall stand, By faith, on heaven’s tableland;

A higher plane than I have found; Lord, plant my feet on higher ground.

My heart has no desire to stay

Where doubts arise and fears dismay; Though some may dwell where these abound,

My prayer, my aim, is higher ground.

I want to live above the world, Though Satan’s darts at me are hurled; For faith has caught the joyful sound, The song of saints on higher ground.

I want to scale the utmost height And catch a gleam of glory bright;

But still I’ll pray till heaven I’ve found, “Lord, lead me on to higher ground.”

Dr. Morris has travelled extensively preaching the gospel, training church leaders and participating in youth development and outreach activi-ties. His ability to artfully execute the dance between teaching and preach-ing and unique blend of transformational and servant leadership styles have influenced several ministry initiatives within the church and community. He was voted (2007) “Pastor of the Year” by the Northeastern Conference in recognition of his work in Ministry. Dr. Clifford Jones featured Pastor Morris as among the “stellar line-up” of contemporary young black preachers in Seventh-day Adventism in the recently published book, “Preaching with Power 2.” Dr. Morris values highly the social and educational advancement of the youth and the nurture and stability of the aged. He esteems spiritual professionalism and the merits of hard work, knowing that by God’s grace we can achieve the best and beyond. His personal motto is: When you can’t realize the ideal, idealize the real. His greatest desire is to see those to whom he has preached, those with whom he has ministered and labored, in heaven when Jesus comes be-cause it is his determination to be in the number when the saints go march-ing in.

PERFORMANCE MEASUREMENT OF EFFECTIVE MINISTRY - We are living in an emerging world and change is inevitable. There are demands that churches and Para-church organizations should demonstrate the results they have an impact on, not just do events and activities. Church is not exempt from the pressure to discover which ministry or service really makes a difference in the community development or an indi-vidual’s life. This session is designed to show church ministry leaders how to use performance measure-ment to enhance the effectiveness of their community outreach ministries.

COMMUNITY SERVICE PRESENTATIONS

THURSDAY, JUNE 30 6:00 p.m.—7:00 p.m.

LEADERSHIP OF CULTURAL INTELLIGENCE - When managing in a cross-cultural setting you may be faced with many challenges. How do you avoid pitfalls and cultural faux pas? How can you create opportunities to build relationships and under-standing with people that are different? This course reviews the tools needed to reduce apprehension, communicate effectively, and establish genuine trust and acceptance. Another dimension for those who want to minister effectively across cultural bar-riers is the need to learn and understand the cul-ture in which we live before we initiate public min-istry. The participants of this course will be chal-lenged to identify their own biases, learn to adapt their personal lifestyles in order to increase their sensitivity towards others, and build bridges of communication with those in need who live in their communities.

FRIDAY, JULY 1 6:00 p.m.—7:00 p.m.

LEADERSHIP AND TEAM DEVELOPMENT - In this session we will discuss the importance of; 1) Leader development, which is directed toward individuals to expand their capacity to be effective in leadership role and processes, and 2) Leadership development, which is the expansion of the organization’s capacity to enact the basic leadership tasks needed for collec-tive work.

GUEST SOLOIST - NEVILLE PETER

Neville Peter was born on November 17, 1972. He was born and raised on the beautiful island of St. Thomas. When he was about six months old, his parents noticed that he did not make eye contact with them anymore. He did not smile back when they smiled at him, nor did he respond to their faces peering at him over the rails of his crib. His parents wondered if there was something wrong with his vision, so they took him to the doctor. He was diagnosed with Glaucoma, which is a very painful disease that causes nerve dam-age in the eyes. At the time, not much could be done to stop the disease or to repair the damage already done. Neville cannot remember ever being able to see perfectly, but he is thankful to God that he had the privilege of some sight for the first 12 years of his life. At the age of fourteen, Neville began to study piano. Two years later, he rediscovered his voice at a high school Christmas concert where the audience gave him a standing ovation. Not long after, he began receiving invitations to sing at other concerts, church events and talent shows on the island. This led him to reconsider his career options. He began taking his music very seriously. By this time, most of his musical interests were geared toward Jazz, Pop, Reggae, and R&B. He began singing in many of the local nightclubs, but out of love and respect for his parents, he still attended church and would sing there from time to time. At the age of 19, Neville left St. Thomas and moved to Miami. There he attended the University of Miami where he received his BA in Studio Music and Vocal Jazz. While in college he received an award from Down Beat Magazine for best National College Jazz Male Vocalist of the Year. During this time he began performing on South Beach and other clubs in the Miami area. However, shortly thereafter, his career in secular music was cut short by God’s divine providence. Although resisting God’s call initially, on January 1, 1998, while playing at a New Year’s Eve party in Michael Cane’s restaurant, Neville decided that he had seen all the world had to offer and he did not find it appealing. It was at that mo-ment he resolved to give all of his talents to God, withholding nothing. He then began writing and performing Christian music and God has really blessed! He has written over 100 Gospel songs, performed at the White House, Carnegie Hall and appeared on many television programs. During an interview he was asked “If new tech-nology were developed that would allow you to regain your sight, would you want to take advantage of it?” His answer gives such insight into his love for the Lord. He paused and thought and then said, “Well, yes and no. Yes, because it would be nice to be able to get into my car and just go wherever I want without having to depend on other people, but no, because I think it would be really cool if the first face that I see is the face of Jesus.” His greatest joy is to use his music to introduce people to the Savior and to show them how to get ready for His soon return. The best description of Neville’s music is that, “It ministers to the soul and quiets the trou-bled spirit.
