SEASON PREVIEWSEASON PREVIEW

2016 SEASON PREVIEWThe 2016 Coast Guard softball team will look

to blend in eight new, talented freshmen with a strong, motivated upper class to build on a year that saw them go 14-18 overall and 5-13 in the competitive New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC).

“Our two strengths this season will be the athleticism and versatility of our freshman class combined with our senior leadership,” said head coach Donna Koczajowski, who is heading into her 19th season. “Our upper classmen are embracing the role as leaders, and they are leading the right way on the fi eld, off the fi eld and have created a true team atmosphere.

Coast Guard will be led on the mound by senior captain Sara Sorensen, who is coming off her fi rst year as the Bears number one starter. Sorensen was 13-16 last season pitching a career high 164 innings with a 4.95 ERA and 52 strikeouts. Her 13 wins was tied for sixth in the conference last season.

Other pitchers on the staff will be sophomore Emily Dow and freshman Mackenzie Everett. Dow pitched in 15 games last season starting fi ve with one win, 12 strikeouts and a 5.43 ERA.. Everett will balance her time between the mound and the infi eld for Coast Guard.

Sophomore Casey Cruzpino will start behind the plate again this season for the Bears. Cruzpino caught in all 32 games for Coast Guard last season and will use that experience to improve in her second year. Freshmen Sharayah Simco and Kelli Franza could also see time catching this season.

The infi eld has numerous options for Coach Koczajowski with senior Hannah Ingerson and junior Cherokee Strickland as the two returners along with freshmen Emily Hogan, Malia Hindle, Hayden Short, Franza and Everett.

“Pretty much all of my infi elders can play everywhere in the diamond, we are very versatile,” commented Coach Koczajowski. “They have high softball I.Q. and are very knowledgeable of the game.”

The outfi eld will see a number of similar faces from last season as sophomore Emma Hvozdovich will be the opening day centerfi elder. Junior Sarah Cammuso and Strickland will be corner outfi elders for Coast Guard while freshman Allyson Holfi nger will be added depth to a veteran outfi eld.

The lineup is geared to improve on a team batting average of .277 last season and 132 runs scored. Hvozdovich is the top returning bat for Coast Guard as she batted .281 with four doubles and was second on the team with 22 RBI’s. Strickland will also supply some power for Coast Guard as she has six career homeruns and was tied for fi rst on the team with two homeruns last year.

In the freshman class, Hogan will provide a blend of speed and power at the top of the lineup while Short will be a force in the middle of the lineup making one through nine for Coast Guard diffi cult outs.

“I think our overall strength this season will be our off ense,” added Coach Koczajowski. “I see a defi nite uptick in our off ensive abilities to put the ball in play, hit for average and I think our power numbers are going to be up as a team.”

The Bears are ready for another benefi cial spring training trip to Florida for ten games in optimal weather to open the year. Last season Coast Guard went 7-3 in Florida with key wins over Bates, Salve Regina and Washington and Jeff erson. The Bears open this season with games against Newbury and Mount Ida on March 6th, fi rst pitch for both games are 9:00 and 11:00.

DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICSDIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS

TIM FITZPATRICKDIRECTOR OF ATHLETICSFIFTH YEAR

Tim Fitzpatrick is in his fi fth year as Director of Athletics at the U.S. Coast Guard Academy, and on his watch the USCGA’s athletic program has seen growth in several key areas.

In addition to securing a comprehensive, fi ve-year shoe and apparel agreement with adidas America for the academy’s 23 NCAA sports, he oversaw a rebranding initiative that has resulted in new logos and marks and created an athletic booster organization, the CGA Bear Club, as an annual giving entity to fund athletics “margin of excellence” projects and initiatives.

Under Fitzpatrick’s guidance, the department now conducts an annual women’s professional development seminar (the Women’s LeadHERship Symposium), which features prominent national leaders in women’s athletics for female USCGA athletic staff members as well as attendees from colleges and universities throughout New England.

He has launched an external program for sale of corporate sponsorships and partnerships, established a Faculty Affi liate program, began the annual Celebrate New London football game initiative and was the driving force in the men’s basketball teams appearance in the Armed Forces Classic on ESPNU last season.

Prior to the Academy Fitzpatrick was the Director of Athletics at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi for two years prior, after spending the previous four years as the Deputy Athletic Director at Indiana University. At Texas A&M – Corpus Christi, Fitzpatrick secured major gifts for construction of a new outdoor tennis center, as well as renovation of the university’s baseball and softball stadiums. He additionally served on the NCAA’s Division I Women’s Basketball Issues Committee while in south Texas, and executed a strategic plan which increased the department’s corporate sponsorship revenue by nearly 40%.

While at Indiana, he was responsible for internal administration of the department, oversaw capital construction and facilities management, and had oversight of the football, men’s basketball and women’s basketball

programs. Additionally, Fitzpatrick managed IU’s external units, including marketing, ticket operations, licensing, merchandising, website, and publications.

Additionally, he negotiated a 6-year, $21,000,000 shoe and apparel agreement with adidas America and administered the Hoosiers’ multi-media partnerships with Learfi eld Sports and the Big Ten Network. During his tenure, Indiana realized a ticket sales revenue increase of 15-percent over annual budgeted projections.

Fitzpatrick came to IU after spending the previous fi ve years as COO and associate athletics director for external operations at the U.S. Military Academy.

He arrived at West Point from the University of North Carolina-Charlotte, where he served as the associate athletics director for external aff airs and executive director of the athletic foundation during the 1998-99 academic year.

Prior to Army and Charlotte, Fitzpatrick served in a similar role at the University of Pittsburgh.

Fitzpatrick was a senior associate athletics director at the University of North Texas from May 1994 to June 1996. He was instrumental in UNT’s transition from NCAA Division I-AA football to the Big West Conference.

He gained considerable experience as Assistant Commissioner of the Southwest Conference from 1992-94.

Fitzpatrick began his athletic administration career as the assistant marketing director at Army before moving on to Virginia Commonwealth as the director of marketing and Ticket Sales (1984-87) and Assistant Athletics Director for Marketing and Public Relations from 1987-92.

A 1981 graduate of Hampden-Sydney College with a bachelor’s degree in English, Fitzpatrick earned his master’s degree in sports administration from Ohio University in 1982.
