It is with great pleasure that I present the Columbia University Press religion catalog for 2016. These titles, which span subjects from philosophy of religion to South and East Asian religions, American religions, and political theology, reflect the interdisci-plinary and global approach of our list and exemplify the innovative and field-chang-ing scholarship that we value.

Among the many outstanding titles in this year’s wide-ranging catalog several deserve special attention. Sacred Knowledge: Psychedelics and Religious Experience, by William A. Richards, one of the first and most prominent researchers in the field, argues passionately and with great insight that psychedelics have incredible potential to assuage human suffering, encourage spiritual awakening, and constructively con-tribute to the quality of life on our planet. I am very proud of this book, and many of our readers will remember his dramatic presentation at the 2013 AAR meeting. I’m equally delighted to publish the first of several books by existential anthropologist Michael Jackson, Harmattan: A Philosophical Fiction, a radical and unsettling explora-tion of boundary experiences through ethnography, memoir, and fiction. Reimagining the Sacred puts noted philosopher of religion Richard Kearney in dialogue with some of the most prominent thinkers of our time, including Julia Kristeva, Catherine Keller, and Charles Taylor.

Other compelling authors and projects include Mormonism and American Politics, edited by Randall Balmer and Jana Riess, the first book to evaluate the political role of the LDS Church in broad historical perspective; Pope Francis Among the Wolves: The Inside Story of a Revolution, by Marco Politi, one of the foremost Vatican experts in the world; and Who Made Early Christianity? MArco PoliTi TAkes us deeP inside the power struggle roiling the roman curia and the catholic church worldwide, beginning with Benedict XVi, the pope who famously resigned in 2013, and intensifying with the contested and unexpected election of Jorge Mario Bergoglio, archbishop of Buenos Aires, now known as Pope Francis. Politi’s account balances the perspectives of Pope Francis’s supporters, Benedict’s sym-pathizers, and those disappointed members of the catholic laity who feel alienated by the institution’s secrecy, financial corrup-tion, and refusal to modernize.

Politi dramatically recounts the sexual scandals that have rocked the church and the accusations of money laundering and other financial misdeeds swirling around the Vatican and the italian catholic estab-lishment. Pope Francis has tried to shine a light on these crimes, but his work has been met with resistance from entrenched fac-tions. Politi writes of the decline in church attendance and vocations to the priesthood throughout the world as the church con-tinues to prohibit divorced and remarried catholics from receiving the communion wafer. He visits european parishes where women now perform the functions of miss-ing male priests—and where the remaining parishioners would welcome the admission of women to the priesthood, if the church would allow it.

Pope Francis’s emphasis on pastoral com-passion for all who struggle with the burden of family life has also provoked the ire of traditionalists in the roman curia and else-where. He knows from personal experience what life is like for the poor in Buenos Aires
