Dear Friends,What an exciting year it was in 2016 in both Minneapolis and St. Paul! In Minneapolis, 227 youth engaged in more than 31,000 hours of employment and classroom training. In St. Paul, we embarked on a new partnership with Johnson High School to bring a pilot program to St. Paul teens.

One of the youth who participated in the pilot program is Hannah, a freshman at Johnson High School. At 14 years old, Hannah already has her sights set on her bright future: “I want to go to MCTC, transfer to a 4-year university, and then earn a Masters and a Ph.D. so I can become a surgeon.” When asked why she wants to take this long, complex path of education, Hannah doesn’t skip a beat, “It’s my path to becoming independent. As a child of a family that immigrated to this county, my family relies on me to have independence.”

During the pilot program, Johnson High School youth had the opportunity to work weekend shifts at the Minneapolis bakery. For many of the teens, this meant spending more than an hour on public transportation to get to work on time. The weekend shifts brought Minneapolis and St. Paul teens into one space, on one team, working on the same objective. In total, St. Paul youth have engaged in more than 300 hours of hands-on work experience in Cookie Cart’s Minneapolis bakery.

While the Minneapolis bakery was crowded during those weekend shifts, it had an impact on the St. Paul teens. Working in a bakery full of their peers, supportive adults, and many volunteer groups was a reminder that soon, there will be a Cookie Cart in their community that will foster the work, life and leadership skills they gained. Hannah’s experience working at the Minneapolis bakery served as an opportunity to move her towards her dream of becoming a surgeon.

Hannah’s story of becoming independent through goal setting and hope for the future is a familiar journey for all Cookie Cart teens, no matter if they are from Minneapolis or St. Paul.

We are deeply touched by the generous support and partnership of the many community members who helped us make great progress in 2016. Together we have shown that our community benefits from a youth development program like Cookie Cart, and together we are committed to providing bright futures for our young people. Thank you!

Experiential LearningBakery Program

The first stop for Cookie Cart teen employees, and the very foundation of our youth employment training, is the Bakery Program. In this hands-on job training, we teach the fundamentals of job readiness to equip every teen with skills in responsibility, collaboration, and initiative.

In 2016, 227 teens mastered basic job skills in the bakery.

Classroom LearningCustomer Service Training

After learning the ins and outs of the bakery, it’s time for our employees to learn the concepts and skills required to provide exceptional customer service. At the core of this training is an exploration of interpersonal communication. Teens who complete this training are eligible to begin practicing their new skills at Cookie Cart’s front counter, as well as at community event.

In 2016, 161 teens completed customer service training and practiced skills at 111 community events, workplace visits, and postsecondary education tours.

360° Program

As teens begin to transition into the mainstream workforce, this advanced work readiness program gives teens the opportunity to meet with adult staff to identify areas of potential interest for future jobs. We equip teens for work after Cookie Cart by teaching resume and cover letter writing, job search tools, and interviewing skills.

In 2016, 187 teens completed the program. As a result, 97% were able to present themselves as experienced employees.

Financial Literacy Training

Cookie Cart has developed hands-on curriculum to provide valuable life skills training to teens who have the new responsibility of a paycheck. This, along with other financial decisions, makes teaching the basic concepts of personal financial management so important. In partnership with area financial institutions, workshops cover the essential building blocks of personal finance: budgeting & saving, checking accounts, and personal credit.

In 2016, 165 teens completed the program. As a result, 89% felt knowledgeable about how to use a bank, budget, and save money.

In 2016, Cookie Cart redesigned and refocused the classroom training curriculum. The new training is highly interactive, engaging our youth employees through individual and group learning strategies that complement and enhance their work experience, and lead them toward mastery of skills needed to be successful on the job, in their lives outside of Cookie Cart, and in securing, maintaining and thriving in future employment. Cookie Cart youth employees move through 3 key phases: Foundations, Leadership, and Bright Futures, in conjunction with financial literacy and customer service training used previously.

Credential LearningDigital Literacy

In partnership with Pillsbury United Communities - Oak Park, Cookie Cart began offering Digital Literacy as a credential learning opportunity for youth employees in 2016. The Northstar Literacy Project serves as a credential for future employment and defines the skills needed to perform tasks on computers and online including basic computer use and Microsoft Suite Programs such as Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.

Credential LearningNational Career Readiness Certification

At Cookie Cart, we are proud to offer teens the chance to take the National Career Readiness Certification Exam (NCRC). This is an assessment and certification issued by ACT and shows prospective employers that a teen has the foundational skills necessary to be successful in the workplace. The test measure skills employers have identified as essential to job success, including applied math, reading for information, and locating information.

ServSafe Food Handler Certification

The ServSafe Food Handler Certification meets requirements set by the Minnesota Department of Health and shows prospective employers in the restaurant industry that youth staff have receive food safety training in the areas of personal hygiene, allergens, time and temperature control, cross-contamination, and cleaning and sanitation.

In 2016, 103 youth achieved at least 1 of the 3 offered industry skills certifications.

Saint Paul Cookie CartCookie Cart was welcomed and a part of the Saint Paul community in 2016, even without a bakery completed yet. In January, through partnership with Johnson High School, Cookie Cart provided 24 students afterschool workshops adapted from our proven work readiness, customer service and financial literacy programs. Volunteers from community partners such as Kemps, Sunrise Banks, and Xcel Energy engaged as mentors and worked one to one with participating teens.

Many lead gifts built the foundation for the $3.2 million fundraising campaign, including support from Otto Bremer Trust, Land O’Lakes, and the City of Saint Paul STAR program, putting the project into position to launch the public phase of the campaign in early 2017. Cookie Cart will continue to work with neighborhood leaders to ensure that the goal of creating a safe, youth-centered place where Saint Paul teens can build better lives becomes a reality.

Dear Friends of Cookie Cart,Over the past five years, Cookie Cart has provided thousands of teens with over 130,000 hours of training, which has been focused on connectedness to new communities, goal orientation, interpersonal and life skills, and critical-thinking. Cookie Cart impacts the lives of our youth employees by developing lasting skills for future employment and a successful relationship with work.

As we celebrate and highlight the accomplishments of Cookie Cart youth employees, we are reminded of the foundation set by our founder, Sister Jean Thuerauf, who invited disconnected neighborhood youth into her home for help with schoolwork and to bake cookies. Although we’ve expanded on Sister Jean’s humble beginnings, we’ve stayed true to her vision: to provide a safe and engaging place for the neighborhood youth to develop work, life and leadership skills.

This past year, we focused on expanding Sister Jean’s vision a little further – across the river to Saint Paul. In January, we launched a pilot program at Johnson High School. 24 youth completed the program, learning the classroom skills portion from Cookie Cart’s training. The success and overall positive reception to that program was reaffirming: the Payne-Phalen neighborhood would benefit from Cookie Cart’s youth employment program.

We are excited for what this new year has in store, including the renovation of our building at 946 Payne Avenue, and continuing our partnership with Saint Paul community leaders, including the pilot program at Johnson High School. We look forward to sharing our story with you as Cookie Cart Saint Paul evolves and grows.
