DESCRIPTION

When Prince Edward Island's railway was abandoned in 1989 Islanders were quick to notice a unique opportunity. The idea of a tip-to-tip shared use walking and cycling trail in the summer and a snowmobile trail in the winter was born. With beautiful rolling hill scenery, quaint villages and broad bay seascapes, the Confederation Trail is Canada's portion of the Trans Canada Trail. The 410 kilometers of rolled stone dust trail has gentle gradients which never exceed 2% (up or down).

Destination Trails Sentiers incontournables

The Confederation Trail is Prince Edward Island’s portion of the Trans Canada Trail. The TCT began in 1992 as a legacy project of Canada’s 125th Anniversary. Over the past 24 years, this visionary idea has grown into 16,500 kilometres of connected Trail. In PEI the dedication and commitment of countless volunteers and the provincial government resulted in our province being the first in the country to complete the Trail. With 435 kilometres of rolled stone dust surface, it is a world class cycling and walking venue.

Island Trails promotes non-motorized trail use throughout PEI. It was primarily responsible for the recent development and enhancement of 7 “Destination Trails.” It is also the non-profit group which promoted the initial transformation of the old rail bed to the current Confederation Trail. This work has evolved into collaboration with the Trans Canada Trail and the Provincial Government departments of Tourism and Transportation to develop the trail system. Details, including maps on these and many other of PEI’s trails can be found at www.islandtrails.ca and www.openstreetmap.org/relation/5687567.

Geocaching / Trail InformationLa géochachette / L’information Trail

Confederation TrailGeocaching is like a modern day game of hide and seek. It is best defined as an adventure game for Global Positioning Device users. Caches are set up all over the world, their locations coordinates are posted on the Internet and GPS users get to hunt for the cache. Geocaching originated in Beaver Creek, Oregon in 2000.

The Confederation Trail has 1800 geocaches placed along the 435 kilometers of the trail. There are over 5189 geocaches on P.E.I.

Brookvale X-Country Mountain Biking TrailsBrookvale Nordic Center is the home to 40 kilometers of single track trail. It is the mountain biking mecca of PEI. Home to the Rigid Riders Mountain Biking Club, it offers a variety of trail difficulty from beginner to expert. As a public mountain biking venue, the trails at Brookvale offer a mix of ‘flowy’ single-track and sweeping double track sections. Whether you are a beginner hoping to explore rich Island forests, or an expert set on pushing your limits as you flow through rusty single track, Brookvale Nordic Center has a Mountain Biking experience for you. For more information visit: www.tourismpei.com/pei-mountain-biking.

2016 Confederation Trail Guide 19

International Appalachian Trail Info The Confederation Trail is the connector trail for North America’s section of the International Appalachian Trail (IAT) in PEI. From Borden Carleton, travel east via the Confederation Trail until you arrive at Royalty Junction, just outside of Charlottetown. You then have two options:

1. Stay on the main Confederation Trail to Mt. Stewart. Next, in Mt. Stewart veer right on the branch trail marked for Georgetown from there follow the IAT markers to Pisquid and off the Trail onto back roads. This route leads to the Dromore Woodland Trails, Prince Edward Island’s official designated section of the IAT. A back-road returns the hiker to an adjoining branch trail that leads to Wood Islands where you can catch the ferry to Nova Scotia.

2. The second option is to .hike the 9 kilometre trail spur line to Charlottetown (veer right at the Royalty Junction intersection). This route leaves the city via the Hillsborough Bridge, which crosses the designated Heritage Hillsborough River to Stratford. The Stratford Trail spur continues east for 58 kilometers to Wood Islands and the Northumberland Ferry.
