Airbag System

Questions and AnswersAbout Airbags andSpecialty LawEnforcement VehiclesQ: Can equipment such as radar

devices, video cameras, andradio trees be mounted in aspecialty vehicle equippedwith a front outboardpassenger frontal airbag?

A: Yes, but care must be taken toproperly mount the equipmentoutside of the airbag“deployment zone.”

Q: What is the airbag“deployment zone”?

A: The term “deployment zone”describes the space an airbagtakes up when fully inflated.Airbags need room to workproperly, and anything in the“deployment zone” — such asimproperly mounted equipment— can greatly affect theperformance of the airbag.

{ Warning

Airbags inflate with great force, faster than the blink of an eye. Noobjects, such as shotguns, shouldbe placed over or near the airbagcovers. Equipment mounted tooclose to an inflating airbag couldprevent the airbag from operatingproperly to protect the occupantsor could be forced into anoccupant or break and become adangerous projectile, causingsevere injury or even death. Tohelp prevent injury and to allowthe airbag to perform as it wasdesigned, do not mountequipment inside the airbagdeployment zones.

Q: How can I identify the airbag“deployment zone” in myvehicle?

A: See Airbag DeploymentDiagrams 0 8 for moreinformation. The diagramsprovide the approximatedimensions of the “deployment

zones” for your specialty vehicle. Before doing any service work, including the installation of anyequipment, consult theappropriate service manual.

Q: Is it possible to shieldequipment so it does notinterfere with airbagdeployment?

A: While shielding may protectcertain equipment from beingdamaged or dislodged, it mayalso negatively affect how anairbag inflates. Therefore, wecannot recommend theplacement of any equipment inthe deployment zone, evenwhen shielding.

Q: Can the installation of pushbumpers on the front end ofthe vehicle affect thedeployment of the airbag?

A: General Motors is not aware ofadverse effects during crashevents from the many pushbumpers that have beeninstalled on GM police vehicles.Because there are many stylesof push bumpers available with

varying crash characteristics, installation of push bumpers mayor may not affect deploymenttiming of the airbags. Pushbumpers should be mounted toavoid modifying the vehiclestructure and interfering with thefront airbag sensors mounted onthe upper radiator support crossmember. Two front impactsensors are installed in GMvehicles. Do not relocate ordisconnect the front sensors. The location and orientation ofthe front sensors are critical forcorrect operation of the airbagsystem. Avoid mountingcomponents on or near thesensors. Push bumper styleswith vertical pushing membersthat are in fore-aft alignment withthe front airbag sensors are notrecommended.

See “Adding Equipment to theAirbag-Equipped Vehicle” in theowner manual for more information.

Ride Control Systems

Traction Control/Electronic StabilityControl

System Operation

The vehicle has a Traction ControlSystem (TCS) and an ElectronicStability Control (ESC) system. These systems help limit wheel slipand assist the driver in maintainingcontrol, especially on slippery roadconditions.

TCS activates if it senses that anyof the drive wheels are spinning orbeginning to lose traction. When thishappens, TCS applies the brakes tothe spinning wheels and reducesengine power to limit wheel spin.

ESC activates when the vehiclesenses a difference between theintended path and the direction thevehicle is actually traveling. ESCselectively applies braking pressureto any one of the vehicle wheel

brakes to assist the driver inkeeping the vehicle on theintended path.

If cruise control is being used andTCS or ESC begins to limit wheelspin, cruise control will disengage.Cruise control may be turned backon when road conditions allow.

Both systems come onautomatically when the vehicle isstarted and begins to move. Thesystems may be heard or felt whilethey are operating or whileperforming diagnostic checks. Thisis normal and does not mean thereis a problem with the vehicle.

It is recommended to leave bothsystems on for normal drivingconditions, but it may be necessaryto turn TCS off if the vehicle getsstuck in sand, mud, ice, or snow.See “If the Vehicle is Stuck” under“Driving” in the owner manual and“Turning the Systems Off and On”later in this section.

The indicator light for both systemsis in the instrument cluster. Thislight will:

. Flash when TCS is limitingwheel spin.

. Flash when ESC is activated.

. Turn on and stay on when eithersystem is not working.

If either system fails to turn on or toactivate, a message displays in theDriver Information Center (DIC),and d comes on and stays on toindicate that the system is inactiveand is not assisting the driver inmaintaining control. The vehicle issafe to drive, but driving should beadjusted accordingly.

If d comes on and stays on:

1. Stop the vehicle.

2. Turn the engine off and wait15 seconds.
