The Lecture consists of a panel discussion on the AAO-HNS developed clinical consensus statement (CCS) on Septoplasty with or without Inferior Turbinoplasty. While current calculations for cost or incidence are unavailable, estimates indicate that $5 billion is spent on medications to treat nasal obstruction and an additional $60 million is spent on surgical therapy. CCS’s reflect the views of an expert panel who carefully examine and discuss the available evidence to produce a consensus document. The panel highlights those statements that they are able to reach consensus on, and highlight the existing evidence and future research needs.

NEW AAO-HNSF CPG Adult Sinusitis Update

This presentation highlights key recommendations from the AAO-HNSF clinical practice guideline on adult sinusitis, published as a supplement to the April 2015 issue of Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery journal. The guideline is an update of the 2004 adult sinusitis guideline developed by the AAO-HNSF. New recommendations include extending watchful waiting as initial management for acute bacterial rhinosinusitis (ABRS), prescribing amoxicillin with or without clavulanate as initial therapy for ABRS, using topical intranasal therapy (saline irrigations, corticosteroids) for chronic rhinosinusitis, and not using topical or systemic antifungal agents for treating chronic rhinosinusitis.

This presentation highlights key recommendations from the AAO-HNSF clinical practice guideline on otitis media with effusion (OME), published as a supplement to the February 2016 issue of Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery journal. The guideline is an update of the 2004 OME guideline developed by the AAO-HNSF, American Academy of Pediatrics, and the American Academy of Family Physicians. New recommendations are presented for managing OME in children who fail a newborn hearing screen, evaluating at-risk children for OME, and surgical indications for adenoidectomy.
