Welcome to CAMT! We hope that while you are here you discover ways to become a better educator and that you find the support you need from our community.

First Timer’s Reception sponsored by Texas InstrumentsWednesday, June 29, from 3:30 p.m. – 5:00 p.m. Stars at Night, Henry B. Gonzales Convention Center

Information BoothThe information booth is located at Registration in front of Exhibit Hall 4.

WebsiteThe CAMT website, camtonline.org, has general conference information, a posting of exhibitors, program information, and information directed to First Timers.

StaffThe CAMT board, volunteers, and program committee (all designated by ribbons on their name tags) are always available to answer your questions.

Making the Most of Your Conference ExperienceMake an effort to engage with someone else. Introduce yourself to the person waiting in line with you or sitting next to you in a session. Taking the time to focus on others opens our mind to new ideas.Try sitting in different areas of the room rather than always sitting at the front or the back of the room. If you change where you are sitting throughout the day, you create a different context for yourself—things look different, they sound different.Pay attention—thinking is hard work. Don’t try to multi-task. In the breaks between sessions, reflect over the last session and summarize a key idea. Write it down.

Professional CreditFill out the form located in your program book. Make a copy of it, and turn it in to your school. There is also a Certificate of Attendance located in your program book, but it is not sufficient to count as professional development credit. CAMT does not keep records of your professional development credit.

READY, SET, GO!FIRST TIME TO CAMT?

The sessions at CAMT present a variety of viewpoints. The views expressed or implied in the sessions should not be interpreted as official positions of CAMT. References to particular commercial products by a speaker should not be construed as a CAMT endorsement of said product(s). CAMT reserves the right to change speakers, change facilities, or modify the program content.

Sessions are to provide participants with information they can use in their profession and are not to be used to sell a product. Speakers who disregard the Speaker Guidelines and use their session to sell a product will have their session stopped. Participants should report violations to the program committee or the registration desk.

Clear the Room PolicyTo provide equal opportunity to sessions for each attendee, it is the policy of the CAMT Board that rooms are to be cleared of all participants at the end of each session. The Board respectfully requests voluntary compliance with this policy. We have made every attempt to provide adequate seating for participants at the conference, but for your safety and due to fire regulations, only those with seats will be allowed in meeting rooms. To comply with fire codes, it will be necessary to ask any person sitting on the floor or standing to leave the room. Please remember:All meeting rooms will be cleared between presentations. All seats are available on a first-come, first-served basis.Reserving spaces in line or saving seats is not permitted.Persons with disabilities and their assistants do not have to clear the session room as others do.

The CAMT 2016 logo was designed by Matt Carlsen. The CAMT 2016 print catalog was designed by Amy Warren.

MATH-A-RAMA Elementary teachers (K-5) will have the opportunity to attend 15 different MATH-A-RAMA sessions. The theme for all of the sessions is Data Analysis. Each day, a different set of 25-minute sessions will be repeated; attend all sessions in any order. Enter and leave MATH-A-RAMA during the 5-minute breaks between sessions. HEMISFAIR BALLROOM 2

WEDNESDAY, JUNE 29, 2016

10:00 A.M. – 12:30 P.M.

Dice DumpAngelle Enriquez, Bandera ISD Rosemary Quigley, Bandera ISD Haley Witzkoski, Bandera ISD This activity provides a hands-on investigation in which students can collect experimental data, analyze it, and use the results to make predictions. Students will “dump” two dice multiple times and collect and organize the resulting sums in order to recognize and analyze patterns in the data.

Needs vs. WantsMichelle McLerran, Bandera ISD Carol Niccum, Bandera ISD Kathy Teich, Bandera ISDThe purpose of this activity is for students to collect and interpret data that is relevant to their own environment. Students will collect transportation data and, in small groups or pairs, organize it from two different communities (rural vs. urban) to create one of three graphs (dot plot, bar graph, or pictograph).

Money MattersNicole Allison, Northside ISD Stephanie Janik, Northside ISD Brenda Carrillo, Northside ISDIn this activity, students will organize a collection of up to four different types of coins and represent the data using a pictograph or a bar graph with intervals of one of more. Students will analyze the data to find the total amount of money in their wallet.

Would You Kiss a Frog?Brittney Ayala, Bandera ISD Niki Edwards, Bandera ISD Brittany Timmons, Bandera ISDIt is often said that math is the language of science. This task provides K-5 students opportunities to use bar graphs and dot plots to represent data involving the physical science concept of force. While integrating science and math concepts, students will collect, organize, and display data and interpret information collected.

What Do You Mean?Ashley Blount, Galena Park ISD Veronica Garza, Galena Park ISD Jacqueline Moreno, Galena Park ISDIn this activity, students will collect, organize, display and interpret categorical data to solve meaningful problems about personal preferences, exploring the use and need of scaled intervals. Students will concretely transition from a picture graph to a pictograph.

THURSDAY, JUNE 30, 2016

1:00 P.M. – 3:30 P.M.

Spin It, Graph It, Expand It!Memory Anderson, Boerne ISDAlison Bell, Boerne ISD Lisa Reeh, Boerne ISD Students will collect, organize, record, and analyze data. In this activity, the students will use a spinner to gather data. They will use the data to compose a three-digit number using place value.

Let’s Go Shopping!Susan Fregeau, Northside ISD Lacy Greco, Northside ISD Sallie McVay, Northside ISDWith $100 to spend, students will collect and represent data on a frequency table, stem-and-leaf plot, bar graph or dot plot and will use their representation to create and solve multi-step problems.

“Sticky” D::T PlotAeshia Gibson, Northside ISD Donna Glassburn, Northside ISD Maria del Carmen Ramirez-Rios, Northside ISDIn this activity, students will use mathematical processes to organize data, interpret information, and solve problems. Students will observe the color of each student’s shirt and tally like colors. The students will use the compiled data to create a frequency table and dot plot. Students will interpret the data to solve problems.

Spill and Plot FractionsSusie Alvarez, Northside ISD Melissa Johnson, Northside ISDThis activity provides children a context to collect experimental data, use a dot plot to display their data, and interpret their findings. Students will shake and spill 2-color counters and record what fraction of the spill is red and what fraction of the spill is yellow. Students will create a dot plot to display their data.

Peas and CarrotsErica Arevalo, Northside ISD Christina Freeman, North East ISD Libby Mertz, Northside ISDIn this activity, students will decompose a number and use a T-chart as a way to organize data. Students will solve a problem in which they have 9 peas and carrots total. They will determine possible combinations of peas and carrots they could have to make up nine in all. They will then use a T-chart to record solutions and determine if they have found all possible combinations.

FRIDAY, JULY 1, 2016

10:00 A.M. – 12:30 P.M.

Go Spurs, Go!Sami Gillette, Northside ISD Nita O’Higgins, Northside ISD Joy Ulcak, Northside ISDIn this activity, students will be given data on basketball players and a set of questions. They will select the type of graph (bar graph, dot plot, stem-and-leaf plot, or scatter plot) that will best help them answer the questions. They will create the graph they select and use their graph to answer the questions.

Animal SortingWhitney Krause, Northside ISD Colleen Socha, Northside ISD Melissa Williams, Northside ISD In this activity, students will work in small groups to analyze a set of animal pictures, identify different attributes, and sort them in various ways based on those attributes. After sorting the pictures, they will draw conclusions from the sets of pictures and answer questions using information from the sets of pictures.

Books We LoveRosabel Perez, Killeen ISD Carla Whitaker, Killeen ISD Kathy Adams, Killeen ISDStudents will analyze data to create various graphs based on a given set of data. Students will take a survey of favorite literature in their grade level. In small groups of 3 or 4, students will work collaboratively to create a pictograph, bar graph, or dot plot to represent their survey data.

What’s in Your Neighbor’s Trash? A Peek at Three-Dimensional Solids in the Real WorldKathy Freeman, Bandera ISD Ashley Jones, Bandera ISDLucretia Stringer, Bandera ISDReal-world examples of geometric solids give students an opportunity to sort, represent data in a bar-type graph, and analyze the information to infer possible characteristics of the owners of the real-world solids.

Bowling BreakdownBlanca Castro, Northside ISD Christina Jordan, Northside ISD Suzy Tirado, Northside ISDThis task provides students a context in which they can collect experimental data, analyze it, and use their results to investigate the number 10. In this activity, students will use a bowling ball to knock down bowling pins and use a variety of combinations to decompose the number 10.

The Mindset Revolution: Teaching Mathematics for a Growth MindsetIn recent years scientific studies have demonstrated that student and teacher “mindsets’ have a profound impact on learning. Students with a “growth mindset,” (Dweck, 2006), who believe that intelligence and “smartness” can be learned and that the brain can grow from exercise, learn more effectively, display a desire for challenge, and show resilience in the face of failure. Such behaviors encourage greater math persistence, engagement, and high achievement. Mathematics teachers play a critical role in the development of mindsets. This session will review the ways to teach for a growth mindset, including attention to classroom norms, math tasks, questions, and other aspects of the math classroom. We will also review the latest brain science and think about what that means for math learning.

The Key to Connecting Whole Numbers and Fractions: Developing Operation Sense (Multiplication and Division)Let’s face it, developing student understanding of the meaning of multiplication and division of fractions is tough, while teaching the procedures is quite simple. So, we have students who can compute, but cannot apply procedural skills to applications. The meaning of multiplication and division doesn’t change when we move from whole numbers to fractions. Let’s examine ways to connect whole number multiplication and division to developing student understanding of these operations with fractions (and decimals). Problem-solving situations and purposeful representations are the key to making these connections. Let’s take a look at how!
