LAST WEEK - WHITEWATER CLASSIC

PHENIX CITY, Ala. | The 15th-ranked Tuskegee scored 21 unanswered points over a 12-minute span to pull away from Albany State, recording a 28-18 victory at the Whitewater Classic Saturday evening. After Albany State (0-2, 0-1 SIAC) took advantage of a fumble early in the third quarter to take a 10-7 lead with 9:37 to play, the Golden Tigers took over on both sides of the ball. The two teams traded positions with Tuskegee (2-0, 2-0 SIAC) turning the ball over on downs, and Albany State missing a field goal. After the missed field goal, the Golden Tigers took over at their own 24-yard line with just 6:24 remaining in the third quarter. The Golden Tigers took seven plays to move the ball 76 yards, scoring on a fumbled snap that was recovered in the end zone by Jerome Lewis with 2:34 to play in the quarter, taking a 14-10 lead. During the drive, the Golden Tigers used passes of 25 and 27 yards to Javarrius Cheatham and Leo Gilbert to move the ball down the field. Following a three-and-out forced by the defense, the Golden Tigers took possession again with 1:05 remaining in the third. And it didn’t take long for Tuskegee to add to their lead as Kevin Lacey dropped back and found a streaking Leo Gilbert for a 41-yard touchdown pass with 1:05 remaining in the quarter, the second touchdown of the day for the pair. After the extra point, Tuskegee led 21-10. They added to the lead in the fourth quarter after a pair of Albany State punts, using just two plays to push the lead to 18. Senior Desmond Reece took a pitch and ran around end for a big first down gain, before taking a pass from Lacey and shaking a defender before racing 51 yards for the 28-10 lead with 7:29 to play. Albany State was able to score late and threatened with just 2:41 remaining but missed a field goal to trim the deficit to seven, allowing Tuskegee to run out the remainder of the clock for the victory. Tuskegee outgained Albany State 406 to 293 on the night, with freshman Jayjerien Craig leading the way with 130 yards on 23 carries on the night. The freshman averaged 57 yards per carry. Lacey finished the night 11-for-19 for 250 yards and three touchdowns, while rushing for 49 yards in the win. Reece finished the night with three receptions for 124 yards and a touchdown, while Gilbert and Cheatham each finished with three catches on the night. Defensively, the Golden Tigers held SIAC Offensive Player of the Year, Jarvis Small, to just 15 yards on nine carries; while Caleb Edmonds finished with 216 yards passing. Linebackers Quavon Taylor and Osband Thompson each finished with 11 tackles on the night, while team sacked Edmonds five times.

OFFENSIVE NOTESCraig breaks the 100-yard barrierw Freshman running back Jayjerien Craig broke the 100-yard barrier for the first time in his career, and is the first Golden Tiger to do so this season.w The freshman finished the day with 130 yards on 23 carries, averaging 5.7 yards per carry. He only lost eight yards on the day, and finished with three runs of 10 yards or more.w Although he did not find the end zone, he was instrumental in keeping drives alive throughout the game against Albany State.w Craig becomes the first back to gain 100 yards in a game since Dennis Norfleet did against North Alabama in the second round of the playoffs last season.w It took eight games last season before Tuskegee had a 100-yard rusher, as Kenno Loyal hit the mark against Kentucky State on the road.w Craig got stronger as the game went on, rushing for four yards on his first carry of the game and 35 on his last to seal the win.

Injury update on offensew Last week against Albany State, Brandon Gainor, Kenny Gant and Josh Matthews all sat out last week recovering from slight injuries suffered against Clark Atlanta (or in practice).w While those three were out, several players stepped up in the backfield to rush for 205 yards on 40 carries against Albany State.w The three players are questionable heading into the week.

Lacey remains hot through two gamesw Senior Kevin Lacey, remained one of the best quarterbacks in the country through the first two games of the season with his performance against Albany State. w Lacey ended the day 11-for-19 for 250 yards with three touchdowns to lead the Golden Tigers to the victory.w Through two games, the senior is now 19-for-27 through the air - throwing for 429 yards and four touchdowns.w Lacey had a streak of eight consecutive passes snapped when he overshot his receiver on the opening play of the game against Albany State.w Through two games, the senior has not thrown an interception to go along with his four touchdowns.

Offensive line - same five, two gamesw The Golden Tigers have been able to dress, and start, the same offensive line through two games.w Last season, the team had the same starting line for just four games due to injury.w This season Carlton Antoine, Leeward Brown, Lowell Richardson, Rochelin Romain and Kelvin Shelton have all started the first two games of the season.w Meanwhile, Stephen Massenburg and Travaris Dorsey have seen action as back-up offensive linemen.

SEC East Connectionw With Travaris Dorsey dressing for his first game of the season against Albany State in the Whitewater Classic, the Golden Tigers have an official connection to

the SEC East Division.w With Dorsey, a transfer from the University of Florida, and Brandon Gainor, a transfer from the University of Kentucky the Golden Tigers have that side of the conference covered from top to bottom.w Gainor came to Tuskegee from Arizona Western after transferring from Kentucky, while Dorsey played in 12 games last season for the Gators.w Both have seen action in the first two games - Gainer against Clark Atlanta and Dorsey against Albany State.

Turning the Pagew Question marks surrounded the Golden Tigers offense entering the game against Albany State last weekend after their performance in 2015.w The Golden Tigers were held to just 232 yards of total offense against Albany State last season, and completed just four passes in 2015.w However, all those questions were answered against one of the best defenses in the conference as the Golden Tigers pounded out 406 yards of total offense in this year’s version of the Whitewater Classic.w The team was able to get 205 yards on the ground and 250 yards through the air in the 10-point victory.

Piling up the Pointsw Tuskegee has scored 64 points through the first two games this season, which 11 more than they scored in the first two games of last season against the same two teams.w The total is the most scored in the first two games of the season since 2010 when the Golden Tigers scored 75 points in the first two games (34 against Benedict and 41 against Stillman). Both games results in victory for Tuskegee, and the Golden Tigers finished 9-2 on the season.w Under head coach Willie Slater, the Golden Tigers have scored more than 64 points in the first two games of the season just two other times (71 in 2008 and 84 in 2007). In those two seasons, the Golden Tigers combined to go 22-1 and won a pair of SIAC championships and an HBCU National Championship.

Long, sustained drives throught the first two weeksw Tuskegee has put together several long drives this season for scores against Clark Atlanta and Albany State. w The team put scoring drives of 92 yards and 87 yards against Clark Atlanta in a 36-13 victory.w They answered that up with three drives of 60 or more yards in the Whitewater Classic against Albany State.w Tuskegee used drives of 76 (twice) and 64 yards to put three touchdowns on the board against the Golden Rams of Albany State.

Pick your Poisonw This season, Tuskegee has three receivers with five receptions through two games, making it difficult for defenders to pick up who to cover.w Desmond Reece, Leo Gilbert and Javarrius Cheathem each have five receptions this season and have combined for 374 of the team’s 464 yards receiving.w The trio has combined for all five touchdown receptions.

DEFENSIVE NOTESQuick Strike Drivew Although the Golden Tigers put together a pair of long sustained drives in the first two games, but the team also proved they could score quick. w After a short kickoff by Clark Atlanta gave the ball to Tuskegee on the Clark Atlanta 41 yard line, the Golden Tigers used two plays to score in 58 seconds to take a 15-0 lead in the opening quarter in the season opener.w Against Albany State, the Golden Tigers used two drives to score quickly.w In the first quick strike drive after an Albany State punt, the Golden Tigers used one play to score on a 41-yard reception by Leo Gilbert.w The team then scored in the fourth quarter, using just two plays to put the game away as they scored on a 51-yard touchdown reception by Desmond Reece.

A lot of faces getting into the actionw Several players got into the action on Saturday night against Clark Atlanta including three quarterbacks and six different players in the backfield (three fullbacks and three running backs).w Seven different receivers saw action on the night, as did two tight ends and seven offensive linemen on the night.w On the defensive side of the ball, the team went two deep at every position, and on a pair of positions went three deep.

Is 2016 the Year?w Tuskegee has not a 1,000-yard rusher since Derrick Washington piled up 1,729 yards in 2012, a three-year span that doesn’t rank near the top of the longest droughts in school history. w The longest drought between 1,000 yard rushers (since 1973) is nine from 2003 until 2012. w But, is 2016 the year the Golden Tigers have that 1,000 yard rusher. In two of the three years, the Golden Tigers have been close but not close enough. Hoderick Lowe has been the closest to the mark since 2012, rushing for 905 yards.

Throwing points on the boardw The Golden Tigers’ 36 points was the second most points scored by a team in the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) on opening weekend.w The total trailed only the 44 put up by Lane College against NAIA-member Texas College. The total was also the eighth highest of any team ranked in the NCAA Division II top 25 this season.w Through two games, the Golden Tigers lead the SIAC in scoring and are 57th in the country in scoring at 32 points per game.

Favorite targetw Although three different receivers have five receptions this season, Leo Gilbert, has become the favorite target of quaterback Kevin Lacey.w The senior tight end has three touchdown receptions, and narrowly missed a fourth against Albany State as the ball went just out of reach of his out stretched hands.

Osband Thompson wins week one awardw Junior linebacker Osband Thompson picked up the slack that many were wondering where it would come from with the departure of Jewell Ratliff.w The junior finished opening night with 16 total tackles, a game-high for either team, and finished with three tackles for loss (totaling 34 yards).w He was named the BOXTOROW National Player of the Week for his efforts and was awarded the SIAC Defensive Player of the Week for his opening week performance.w Thompson followed that performance up with 11 tackles against Albany State in week two, giving him 37 total tackles this season.

Taylor throwing up big numbers in the first two gamesw Tuskegee junior linebacker Quavon Taylor made a big splash in his first game in two years for the Golden Tigers on Saturday night against Clark Atlanta.w Taylor finished with six tackles, including a pair for loss. He also had two quarterback hurries in his first game. The junior made his biggest play in the second quarter when he picked off a pass and ran it back 37 yards for the score.w The junior linebacker put 11 tackles on the board against Albany State, giving him 17 on the season after the long layoff.

Forcing bad decisionsw One of the nation’s best in 2015, the Tuskegee defense picked up right where they left off in the first week of 2016.w Last season the team picked off a school record 23 passes on the season, and in just one game, they are already one-sixth of the way - on pace to pick off 36 passes - as they picked off four passes.w Sophomore Darnell Hill picked off the first pass of the game for the Golden Tigers, while Marlon Parnell, Taylor and Darius Holmes each picked off a pass - with Holmes’ pick being the last offensive play for Clark Atlanta.w Albany State was able to get away unscathed in the Whitewater Classic as they did not turn the ball over to the Golden Tigers.

Bad memories for star playersw Tuskegee welcomed Vanderbilt transfer Johnathon McCray to the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC), as the junior received the start under center for Clark Atlanta.w The Golden Tigers chased McCrary from the game in the second quarter with Clark Atlanta trailing 15-0. The junior finished just 3-for-7 with a pair of interceptions and 27 yards through the air. He was also sacked one time.w Against Albany State, the Golden Tigers held SIAC Offensive Player of the Year to just 15 yards on nine carries after his 100-yard performance last season.

Three Consecutive Sacks - Rare Featw Tuskegee was able to record five sacks in the game against Albany State in week two, with three of those sacks coming on consecutive plays in the fourth quarter.w The Golden Tigers used sacks by Chris Faulkner, Daryl George (with help from Terance Leatherwood) and Darion Hall on consecutive plays to force a fourth down for Albany State.w The trio combined to knock Albany State back nearly 30 yards on the plays.

Dalton Hall makes an impact on special teamsw Sophomore Dalton Hall made his presence felt in the first two games this season, but only after his first extra point attempt was blocked.w Hall finished the two games 8-for-9 on extra points, and did not attempt a field goal in either game.w He also used his leg on kickoffs as he was forced to kick off deep in his own territory twice following penalties.w The sophomore is averaging nearly 54 yards per kick and had a touchback against Albany State in the Whitewater Classic.

Booming Punt off the foot of Pecarow Averaging 38 yards per punt, freshman John Pecaro made his mark in the season opener against Clark Atlanta.w The true freshman did not have any problems with snaps from Anthony O’Bannon and was able to boom a 57 yard punt to pin Clark Atlanta deep in their own territory.w The punt put the Panthers back to their 14-yard line.

Returning Kicksw Redshirt freshman Ladarrell Pettway has returned six kickoffs in his first two collegiate games.w Pettway returned the kicks for 156 total yards, including a long of 40 yards against Albany State.

Getting his hands on the ball on puntsw Senior Desmond Reece finally got a chance to return a punt this season against Albany State after being shut out against Clark Atlanta.w The senior returned one punt up the right sideline for a 43 yard gain for the Golden Tigers. It was the longest of the night for either team, and is the longest of the season for amy of the three teams.

SPECIAL TEAMS NOTESMark that may never be brokenw The 2015 defense set a new mark last season that may not be broken for many years to come. w The team tied the mark for interceptions in a game with five against Morehouse, which tied the mark set by the 1986 team against Miles (a mark that stood for 30 years. w They also set a new mark for interceptions in a single season with 23, breaking a mark that was set in 1974 and tied in 1990.

Back-to-Back SIAC co-Freshman of the Year selectionsw For two consecutive years, the Golden Tigers have had the co-Freshman of the Year in the Southern Intercollgiate Athletic Conference. And this season, both of those players were named to the All-Conference preseason teams released by the conference office in mid-July. w Junior linebacker Osband Thompson (first team) was the co-Freshman of the Year in 2014 and is the leading returning tackler for the Golden Tigers. w Meanwhile, Darius Holmes (second team) was the co-Freshman of the Year last season and returns after missing the postseason last year with a foot injury. Last season, Holmes was named National Player of the Week for his performance against Morehouse with two interceptions.

McCutcheon returns for his junior seasonw Last season Jonah McCutcheon burst onto the scene for the Golden Tigers, picking off seven passes from his safety position to lead the team. w One of the leaders in the conference, McCutcheon was named First Team All-SIAC, earned several all-region honors and was named a Black College All-American at the conclusion of the season. w He returns this season as one of the active leaders in the nation in interceptions per game.

THE COACH, WILLIE SLATER

WILLIE SLATERHEAD COACH | 11th SEASON | 94-24 (.797) RECORD AT TUSKEGEE

Willie Slater enters his 11th season as the head coach of Tuskegee University after being appointed on January 17, 2006. Entering the 2016 season, Slater has 37 seasons of coaching experience which include 31 years at the collegiate level. Over half of those years – 18 – were spent as an offensive coordinator at multiple levels.

During his time at Tuskegee, Slater has recorded an 92-24 record, which ranks him sec-ond all-time in wins at the university. He is currently the leader in winning percentage for a career at the school, with a percentage of .793 over his first 10 seasons. During his tenure, Slater has coached 52 SIAC All-Conference selections, and numerous All-Ameri-cans.

Slater and the Golden Tigers have claimed six SIAC championships since 2006, including a string of four consecutive from 2006 until 2009. He also helped the lead the Golden Tigers to their eighth HBCU national championship in 2007 with a 12-0 record. Tuskegee has recorded nine wins in eight of Slater’s first 10 seasons at the helm, and have record-ed a winning season in nine of the 10 seasons under his direction.

Slater was named The Pigskin Club of Washington, DC and the Sheridan Broadcasting Network National Coach of the Year in 2007, a year in which he led Tuskegee to a perfect 12-0 record and the HBCU title. Additionally, Slater has been tabbed as the SIAC Coach of the Year five times (2007, 2008, 2009, 2012 and 2014).

Last season, the Golden Tigers made a historical run that reached the quarterfinals of the NCAA Division II playoffs (the Super 2 Region championship game) against West Georgia. The team finished with a 10-3 record overall, finishing second in the SIAC West Division. It was the third consecutive season the Golden Tigers qualified for the playoffs, and the first year they were able to win in the opening round. They followed that up with a second round win over North Alabama to reach the quarterfinals.

In 2015, Tuskegee had one of the best defenses in the country as they ranked at the top or near the top in every statisical category. The team also led the SIAC in scoring offense and scoring defense, and led the nation in defensive touchdowns.

The Golden Tigers also had 10 all-conference selection in the SIAC, and had numerous All-Americans which included an AFCA All-American in Jewell Ratliff.

During his tenure at Tuskegee, Slater has been successful against conference opponents and long-time foes of Tuskegee as he has recorded a 63-8 record in SIAC play during his nine years. He also recorded a 5-2 record against Alabama State University during his tenure.

A five-time NCAA Division II National Assistant Coach of the Year, Slater has five NCAA Division II national championships on his resume. He joined the Tuskegee staff as the head coach after serving as the offensive coordinator at Temple University (FBS member) in 2005 under Bobby Wallace.

His first stop as a full-time collegiate coach came Troy University (1983-90), where he served as the running backs under Chan Gailey (1983-84). In total, he spent eight seasons with the Trojans, also working as the quarterbacks and running backs coach under Rick Rhoades (1985-87) and as the offensive coordinator for Robert Maddox (1988-90). The Trojans went to the NCAA Division II playoffs three times with Slater on staff, winning the NCAA Division II national championship in 1984 and 1987. He was named the NCAA Division II National Assistant Coach of the Year in both of the title campaigns for Troy.

Following his stint at Troy, Slater moved on to a stint at his alma mater – the University of West Alabama (1991-92).

After his stay at West Alabama, Slater moved to the perennial NCAA Division II power – the University of North Alabama (1992-99), which included six seasons as the offensive coordinator under Wallace. During his stay in Florence, the Lions qualified for the playoffs five times and won three consecutive NCAA Division II national championships from 1993 to 1995. Slater was named the NCAA Division II National Assistant Coach of the Year in all three championship seasons for the Lions, and in 1993, the team had the country’s top rushing offense by averaging 317.5 yards per game.

Following his stints at several of the top NCAA Division II schools in the state of Ala-bama, Slater moved to another under then-head coach Jack Crowe at Jacksonville State University (2000-03). During his stay at Jacksonville State, the Gamecocks won the Ohio Valley Conference in 2003 with a 7-1 record (8-4 overall).

During a stellar career of working with programs in Divisions I-A, I-AA and II, Slater has had the pleasure of coaching numerous players who have taken those skills to the NFL playing for teams such as the New England Patriots, Carolina Panthers, Washington Redskins among others.

Prior to his full-time collegiate coaching career, Slater served as a graduate assistant at the University of West Alabama after his playing career for one year. He moved on from the collegiate ranks to the high school ranks where he coached at Jess Lanier (1979-80) in Bessemer, Ala., then at T.R. Miller High School (1981-82) in Brewton.

Before coaching, Slater shined on the playing field, both in high school and college. He was a four-year starter at quarterback for West Alabama (then called Livingston College) from1974 until 1977, and helped the Tigers to a third place finish in the 1975 NCAA Division II playoffs. He still ranks sixth in career rushing at the school with 1,582 yards and 20 touchdowns and is ninth in career total offense with 2,081 yards. His 90-yard run against Troy State in 1975 still stands as the longest run from scrimmage.

He was also a standout at the high school level, where was named a prep All-America at quarterback and was the Class 1A Player of the Year at Coffeeville (Ala.) High School.

Slater earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Education from Livingston College in 1979.
