On behalf of the Board of Governors, the alumni, faculty, staff, and students of this excellent institution, I am pleased to present Southeast Community College’s Graduate Report. The report includes graduation and employment statistics associated with 2017 graduates from all of our applied technology and transfer
programs.
The report includes the total number of graduates, the number employed within the training-related field, the number continuing their education, the percent employed
within Nebraska, and the average salary for SCC graduates. In addition to graduation and employment statistics, the report includes employers and transfer colleges and universities associated with each of SCC’s programs. The report also includes a sampling of personal experiences of graduates and employers in relation to the impact of SCC’s programs.
This report represents one of our many efforts to evaluate the success of our programs and the degree to which we are accomplishing our mission.
SCC is committed to its mission of providing the highest quality applied technology and academic education opportunities to its 15-county service area. In 2017, SCC had nearly 1,500 graduates, with 93 percent employed or continuing their education. Eighty-nine percent of our employed graduates are working in Nebraska. SCC is vital to the local economy by providing skilled workers and adding property and tax income by training and graduating wage earners.
SCC has a long history of ensuring that employers have access to qualified graduates who have the skills needed for successful and productive employment. SCC continually seeks to align its programs with the specific needs and requirements of employers and transfer institutions. We are committed to meeting the educational needs of our students, employers and the community.

Gathering DataInformation about the post-graduation status of SCC graduates was collected directly from the graduates at or near the time of graduation and from the National Student Clearinghouse. The information was collected by the Placement offices through personal conversations, classroom visits, telephone calls, emails, mailings, texts, and social media.
Wage and employment information has been self-reported by graduates for their first job after graduation. Self-reported continuing education status was supplemented with information from the National Student Clearinghouse.

Dylon Grantski“Enrolling in the Manufacturing Engineering Technology program at Southeast Community College was the best decision that I could have made for my future! Not only was I taught the curriculum needed for today’s industry standards, I also was taught by instructors who had real-life exposure to these practices. During my time at SCC, I had the privilege to work with equipment that was being used in the industry and got that hands-on experience. This gave me an advantage when job seeking because I was already exposed to the nomenclature of the trade. The Manufacturing Engineering program was very structured. It was aggressive enough to prepare me with the proper knowledge and was flexible enough to ensure I was absorbing the information. As an automation engineer, my job requires me to wear many different hats.
My position at Geist Manufacturing requires me to have the knowledge in different fields such as PLC programming, engineering/drafting, machining, electrical engineering, and also the board overview of how the manufacturing process works. Upon graduating SCC with an associate degree in Manufacturing Engineering, I had experience in all of these fields, and I’m able to apply them toward my position with confidence! The best feature of this program is that no matter if you have a thorough understanding of engineering mechanics or are just entering the field, the instructors start you off with the basics and build on that. I would recommend this program to anyone who wants to learn about the vast world of engineering, but also wants to learn it hands-on.”

Kelly JirovecKelly Jirovec currently serves as the Director of Student Health Services at Doane University, and she credits her courses at SCC as being the foundation to her successful career. After graduating from Lincoln Northeast High School, Kelly attended SCC, graduating from the Practical Nursing program in 1982. She spent a year as a full-time Licensed Practical Nurse at Bryan Hospital before switching to part-time in order to attend the UNMC nursing program. Kelly was able to complete her Bachelor’s degree in Nursing in 1987. Throughout her 21 years at Doane, Kelly has built the Student Health Services office into a place that benefits everyone within the Doane community. Beyond the typical responsibilities that come with a campus nurse’s office, she has introduced a campus-wide flu shot program, hosts bi-annual campus blood drives and brings
reproductive and sexual health services to campus. Kelly received the Zenon R. Hansen Staff Leadership Bulldog Award for demonstrating a commitment to leadership and service to the Doane community. She has twice been awarded the Student Congress Award for outstanding service to students and was the recipient of the E. Dean Lovett Award for Exemplary Contributions to a College Health Program. “The Practical Nursing program at SCC provided me with a solid base to enter the UNMC program, and I feel that my experience as an LPN helped me build toward my RN.”

Here at the Farmers Cooperative we make it a priority to look at SCC students for any of our career opportunities. As an employer in the agriculture industry, the students are well-prepared for many of our positions. From an accounting position to an applicator position, SCC students have the necessary knowledge and qualifications right out of college, allowing us to save on some of the costs for training. Not only do they have the proper education, but we find that students have a passion for the career they are pursuing. SCC allows students to discover for themselves the career they want to pursue with a diversified program and numerous class options; along with requiring the internship, allowing employers to find the best fit for any student in their company before an employment offer is even made. Beginning August 2019, SCC will operate on the semester calendar system. The transition from quarters to semesters has been studied at length during the past two years by representatives from nearly every area of the College.
SCC received preliminary results from the Higher Learning Commission visiting team this last fall. The conversion to a semester calendar was one of several major initiatives that was validated by the report as critical to meeting the HLC’s core criteria.
A Calendar Task Force was formed, and it met for the first time in August 2017, working on multiple plans to steer the College through this process. Here is a brief update on the College’s quarter-to-semester calendar conversion:
A link on the public website (www.southeast.edu/Q2S) contains comprehensive up-to-date information, including the calendars, timeline, a student guide, a Q&A section, and more. The site will evolve throughout this process.
Members of the Calendar Task Force have refined the calendars, drafted a common class schedule, developed an implementation timeline, and contacted other schools to gather best practices. All of this information is being shared with SCC employees, students and the general public.
