RECOGNITION FOR
POSITIVE IMPACT
ON THE STUDENTS’
EDUCATIONAL PROCESS
2
PURPOSE The purpose of the Innovation of the Year Awards is to recognize college employees who have designed and implemented significant innovations that positively impact the education of students at Humber College Institute of Technology and Advanced Learning.
ELIGIBILITY Employees from all employee groups (full and part-time faculty, administrators, and support personnel) are eligible for nomination.
CRITERIA The major criterion for nomination is that the innovation has a POSITIVE IMPACT ON THE STUDENTS’ EDUCATIONAL PROCESS. Additional criteria to be used for judging the merit of an innovation and its impact on students’ education are:
• CREATIVITY - The selected program should be as original as possible or be a unique adaptation of an existing program, process, or concept.
• EFFECTIVENESS - There is evidence that the innovation leads to a better process for accomplishing a task(s).
• REPLICATION - The significant components of the innovation selected can be replicated in other institutions with a minimal amount of difficulty. The description of the program should include any conditions necessary for replication.
• TIMELINESS - The innovation should not be more than five years old in the institution, but it must have been in existence long enough to have been tested.
• VALUE ADDITION - There is evidence that the innovation adds value to, or improves, the students’ education.
• CURRENCY - There is evidence that the innovation is current in content and adaptive to technological application as appropriate.

LEAGUE FOR INNOVATION IN THE COMMUNITY COLLEGE AWARD
AFTER LOLAThe winner of this year’s “Innovation of the Year 2016” award, is John Bourgeois, Program Coordinator for Acting for Film and Television (AFTV) in Humber’s School of Creative and Performing Arts, for his initiative and work on creating After Lola, AFTV’s first feature length film. After Lola is a professional/industry ready feature film that engaged faculty, support staff and students from both AFTV and Humber’s Music Program in its creation. Individuals across both programs played a role in marshaling the resources required for the film to take shape and come to fruition. Since completion, After Lola has acted as a point of engagement with the broader professional industry, having an opening at the Royal Cinema on College Street, as well as being considered for film festivals across the country. The film provided Humber students an opportunity to work in a professional environment, to understand current industry-level expectations and to be able to see the fruits of their labour in a public forum on a professional stage – or, rather, screen.
Accordingly, the process was an invaluable teaching and learning opportunity. Further, the fact that this project was cross-disciplinary, involving faculty and students from both the AFTV and the Music school, was truly innovative and worthy of recognition. The project was an exemplary example of interdepartmental collaborative work. To see a project like this develop from infancy to professional readiness was undoubtedly a transformative learning experience for students and a watershed moment in the academic career of the project steward, John Bourgeois. This innovation clearly demonstrates the efficacy of creative interdepartmental projects and provides an example of excellence and best practices for future interactive collaborations.

DEAN’S NEWSLETTERThe Dean’s Newsletter for the Business School is a professional, monthly account of student success and business news from the Business School at Humber College. In addition to listing important dates and upcoming events, The Dean’s Newsletter highlights student success throughout the Business School and provides a medium for students to receive recognition for excellence in both academics and entrepreneurial spirit. The newsletter also highlights outstanding faculty contributions to student success through events and awards.
The Dean’s Newsletter is a first of its kind at Humber - a regular, monthly, professional newsletter produced by an academic school that highlights both faculty and student excellence. This is important and has a positive impact on student learning because it promotes excellence not only among academics, but in the realm of teaching as well. To be included in the newsletter is an achievement that many Business School students work for. The newsletter also promotes networking and career events for graduating students, provides a focus on success stories, and gives readers a snapshot of what has been happening in the Business School.
The purpose of the newsletter is to promote student/faculty engagements in the Business School. It is an innovation that highlights excellence amongst our students and faculty while at the same time promoting the school and its activities to the larger community.

HIVESThe Humber Collaborative Classroom initiative has resulted in the implementation of the HIVES. Incorporating feedback from faculty and students with experience in Phase 1 Collaborative Classrooms K148 and H426, the team was presented with a unique set of challenges.
Rebecca, Adrian, Mike, Tony, and Magno envisioned, designed, programmed and implemented the rooms now known as the HIVES. There was nothing ‘off the shelf’ for these labs - even the new collaborative tables had to be designed and created. The AV system had to be made easy to use. A touch screen for the instructor was programmed with simple control buttons. The fact that any screen could be displayed onto any other screen presented unique challenges in the design.
The impact of the HIVES is currently being investigated by the CTL, and the preliminary data indicates a statistically significant improvement in satisfaction and learning within these new learning spaces. As a result of the implementation of the HIVES, Humber College is yet again recognized as an innovator and system leader in teaching and learning spaces in the post-secondary landscape, and we are now entertaining requests from many institutions to view the HIVES and learn from our experiences. #WeAreProud!
