A Note From Our President Spring has finally sprung here in Kansas! Birds are chirping, the sun is (mostly) shining, and the grass is looking greener. Spring, for me, has always brought a sense of rejuvenation to the year. It feels like the time for new beginnings.

The same is true for spring with Alpha Phi. In February, we held our annual officer retreat - our officers have been hard at work planning social events, new philanthropy events, and our Centennial Celebration. We hope that you join us for some of our upcoming gatherings, all of which can be found on our website under the “Calendar of Events” tab.

I am looking forward to what this next year will bring for our chapter and hope to see you all very soon!

Laura Wywadis (Upsilon, ’07)

Collegiate Chapter News Senior Member Brings Major Philanthropic Event To Campus

Hannah Howe + Relay For Life

What inspired you to bring this event to campus? I’ve participated in several, since a number of people in my family have been diagnosed with cancer. Cancer is a big part of this world; it impacts almost all of us in some way. I enjoy seeing communities come together to help fight it. WU as a community is very supportive - I wanted to bring an

event to campus that feeds off that vibe.

How long has this been a goal of yours? I’ve wanted to bring Relay for Life to campus since I first came to college. I was aware of the successful events that KU and KSU put on every year, and I wanted to be a part of something like that. I haven’t had the right resources fall into place until now. Thankfully they did, since this is my last semester.

What role has Alpha Phi played in helping to make this event possible? They’ve been so supportive! When I was first approached by the American Cancer Society about starting Relay for Life at WU, I asked my sisters about it at chapter one night to see how many would be interested in participating. My decision to say ‘yes’ was heavily based on how many hands were raised that night. Now I have four sisters on my committee and at least one, if not two, Upsilon teams for event night. I know that as long as Alpha Phi is there to support me, I can pull this crazy, exciting idea off in the short timeframe I have.

What other types of organizations have gotten involved so far? Aside from the four sisters already mentioned, I have several students from The Leadership Institute and the Allied Health Department on my committee. The response for team formation has been huge. In the couple of weeks that event registration has been open, we’ve heard from fraternity & sorority chapters, Allied Health, Nursing, the Love Your Melon crew, the Leadership Institute, the Law School, Washburn Admissions office, Washburn athletic teams, and Alpha Phi alumnae.
