ScenarioYou have obtained a placement in your Local Authority and are assigned to the staff counselling teamat County Hall. Your tutor is very pleased for you and tells you that this is the first time that County Hallhave offered placements to Diploma students as they usually only take students from the universityMasters programme.
On your 4th week in the placement you receive a telephone call from Lisa, who announces herself as‘one of the managers in the Housing Department’. She tells you that she is sending Douglas to you inhalf an hour and wants him seen straight away. She describes him as ‘snappy with the service userswhen he’s on the front desk and almost always asleep at his desk when he’s on admin duties’. Sheends the call abruptly.
Douglas appears half an hour later and seems bright and breezy as he enters the counselling room.Douglas talks almost non–stop about his home and very packed social life and then looking at the clocksays he must leave as he has a lunch date with a colleague and asks you not to tell Lisa that he has left20 minutes early.
After lunch you receive another telephone call from Lisa who is even more brusque in her manner thanbefore and asks you what you have been ‘playing at’ as Douglas is no different and without pausingfor breath warns you that you had “better get your act together” when she sends him next week or it's“curtains for him” before putting the phone down.
