Liberty Invitational Recap The Lady Flames posted a pair of sweeps over USC Upstate and Hampton to open the home schedule at the Liberty Invitational. Liberty then finished as tournament runner-up after falling to ETSU in the last match on Saturday. During the invitational, Liberty outhit opponents, .218-.092, while averaging 3.11 blocks per set and 1.67 aces per set. For their efforts on the weekend, Michelle Melendez and Leah Clayton were both named to the all-tournament team.

Denied Liberty leads the Big South with 2.79 blocks per set. Entering the week, the Lady Flames ranked 32nd nationally in both blocks and opponents’ hitting percentage (.144). Net defense has been a total team effort, as four players have posted at least one match with six or more blocks this season. Sirena Vorster is ranked first in the Big South with 1.44 blocks per set, followed in third by Anna Gragg at 1.33. Vorster recorded a career-high nine blocks against Missouri. On Saturday against ETSU, Gragg posted seven blocks and Casey Goodwin added six, the first time in rally-scoring history that two Liberty freshmen have registered six or more blocks in the same match.

Serving up Aces During a 3-0 sweep of Hampton on Saturday, Liberty served up a season-high 11 aces, the most by the Lady Flames since posting 13 aces at N.C. Central, Aug. 24, 2012. Sirena Vorster (4 aces) and Sydney Morris (3) both recorded career highs in service aces against Hampton. Hannah Morris also has a four-ace match this season, Aug. 27 at Kennesaw State.

Entering Double Figures On Saturday against ETSU, Sydney Morris scored a career-high 11 kills, good for her first career double-digit kill match. Leah Clayton turned in her third career 10-kill match with 12 kills. Four Lady Flames have posted at least one double-digit kill match in 2016, while Si-rena Vorster and Hannah Weidner have 10-kill matches in previous seasons. Fresh Faces The Lady Flames have seven freshmen this season. Five newcomers have already started at least one match, including as many as four at a time. On Aug. 26 against Pitt, Leah Clayton, Casey Goodwin and Kainah Williams all start-ed. It marked the first time since Sept. 1, 2000 that three or more Liberty true freshmen started the season opener. In 2000, Erin McKeown, Theresa Passamani, Tatiana Tkachuk and Simone Turner all drew the start in a 3-1 setback to Texas Tech in Columbia, S.C.

Double-Double the Fun On Aug. 27 against Kennesaw State, Leah Clayton (15 kills, 17 digs), Hannah Mor-ris (47 assists, 12 digs) and Gabrielle Vess (16 kills, 13 digs) all posted double-doubles. Freshman Casey Goodwin added 10 kills. Clayton and Morris were the first Liberty freshman teammates since Jade Craycraft and Lillie Happel Nov. 19, 2010 at Winthrop to record double-doubles in the same match. That was also the last time two Liberty freshmen posted 10+ kills in the same contest. Anna Willey recorded her 15th career double-double in a 3-0 sweep of Hampton, Saturday, dishing out 31 assists and collecting 11 digs.

Top of the List Liberty Head Coach Shane Pinder is in his 13th season and holds a 224-167 overall career record. On Oct. 3, 2014 at Gardner-Webb, he passed Chris Phillips (1992-97, 99-03) for first place on Liberty’s all-time volleyball wins list. With a 3-1 win at UNC Asheville on Oct. 4, he became the fourth volleyball coach in Big South history with 200 or more career wins. Pinder earned his 224th career win on Saturday against Hampton, passing former Coastal Carolina Head Coach Kristen Bauer (1999-2011) for second all-time in career wins among Big South volleyball coaches.

After posting a program Division I-record 15 wins last season, USC Upstate is off to a 2-6 start this year. The Spartans went 1-2 at the Liberty Invitational last weekend, getting its first win of the season on Saturday against Hampton. Madison Haake, a 2015 Atlantic Sun All-Freshman Team member, is one of five re-turning starters. Emily Koelling leads the Spartans with 1.97 kills per set, while Haake was named to the Liberty Invitational all-tournament team.

Liberty vs. Furman (Furman leads, 3-2)Last Meeting: Furman 3, Liberty 0 (Sept. 30, 1995 - Greenville, S.C.)Last Liberty Win: Liberty 3, Furman 0 (Oct. 21, 1989 - Newark, Del.)

Furman, winner of the 2015 Southern Conference Championship, is 2-4 this season following a 3-2 loss to Winthrop on Sunday. The Paladins’ two wins are over Auburn and Clemson. Furman was voted to repeat as conference champion in the preseason poll. Annie Bierman, the 2015 SoCon Player of the Year and an AVCA All-East Region se-lection, averages 3.12 kills per set. Bierman has already surpassed 1,000 kills and 1,000 digs for her career. Taina Joseph has recorded 2.61 kills per set this season. Davidson brings a 2-5 record into its home tournament after dropping its home opener to Elon on Tuesday. The Wildcats have beaten UNCW and Wake Forest so far this year. Davidson averages 2.67 blocks per set. Sabrina Shepherd, the 2015 A-10 Rookie of the Year, has averaged 1.77 kills per set so far this season. Ciara Cockrell averages 2.43 kills per set, while Emily Franklin aver-ages 1.27 blocks per set.

Haven’t I Seen You Lately? Friday will be the second time in as many weeks that Liberty will face USC Upstate, as the Lady Flames downed the Spartans, 3-0, last Friday at the Vines Center. The last time Liberty played against the same non-conference opponent twice in the same season was 2009, when the Lady Flames played at VCU two times. The last time Liberty faced the same non-conference opponent twice within an eight-day-or-fewer span was 1999, when the Lady Flames posted wins over Florida Atlantic on back-to-back days in Tallahassee, Fla.

First Time for Everything The host of this weekend’s invitational, Davidson, is the answer to the following trivia question. Against which team did 13th-year Head Coach Shane Pinder earn his first ca-reer coaching victory? Pinder’s first collegiate coaching win came Sept. 17, 2004, in his first home match as head coach at Liberty, a 3-0 win over Davidson, at the Vines Center.

Preseason Postings Liberty was predicted to finish second in the Big South, according to the preseason coaches’ poll. The Lady Flames went 14-14 a year ago, finishing third in the Big South with a 9-5 conference record. Additionally, junior setter Anna Willey and sophomore libero Margaret Latchford were both named to the 2016 Big South Preseason All-Conference team.

Half and Half Exactly half of this year’s 14-member roster is made up of freshmen. Liberty’s seven-player freshman class is its largest since 2012, when seven freshmen helped the Lady Flames capture their seventh, and most recent, Big South Volleyball Championship title.

Career Milestones in ReachHannah Weidner - 600 kills (currently at 506 - reached 500 at Gardner-Webb, 11/14/15)Anna Willey - 1,500 career assists (currently at 1,427 - reached 1,000 at WU, 10/24/15)Margaret Latchford - 600 career digs (currently at 547 - reached 500 vs. Radford, 11/19/15)

10+-Club (Kills) Six current Lady Flames have posted at least one career 10-kill match during their collegiate career. Hannah Weidner is the only current Lady Flame to score 20 kills in a match, sending down 20 kills on Oct. 18, 2014 at Coastal Carolina. Other current Liberty players’ career highs in kills: Gabrielle Vess (19), Leah Clayton (15), Sirena Vorster (14), Casey Goodwin (11) and Sydney Morris (11).

10+-Club (Digs) Six current Lady Flames have recorded at least one career 10-dig match, led by Mar-garet Latchford’s program rally-scoring-record 38 digs at Campbell, Oct. 9, 2015. Additional Lady Flames with their current career highs in digs: Michelle Melendez (22), Anna Willey (19), Leah Clayton (17), Gabrielle Vess (14) and Hannah Morris (12).

For the (Freshman) Record Margaret Latchford collected a program freshman-record 502 digs last season, the ninth most in a single season in program history, and sixth most in Liberty’s rally-scoring records. She finished the season ranked fifth in the Big South with 4.67 digs per set. As a freshman in 2014, Hannah Weidner tied a program record with 19 straight 10+-kill matches, reaching double figures in kills in 24 out of her first 25 career matches. Wei-dner was the 2014 VaSID University Division Volleyball All-State Rookie of the Year.

No Relation Last year, the Lady Flames had a pair of sisters, in Jade and Sirena Vorster. The Vor-ster sisters finished first and second on the team in blocks during 2015. This season, Liberty has Hannah and Sydney Morris, both from Virginia, but the two are not related. Hannah’s older sister, Rachel, was a backup setter at Liberty in 2015. Freshmen Kainah Williams (Spring Branch, Texas) and Meegan Williams (St. Louis, Mo.) are not related, either.

1,343’s a Crowd On Friday against USC Upstate, Liberty drew a home-opener-record 1,343 fans. It was the third-most fans to attend a Liberty volleyball match at the Vines Center. The Lady Flames hold the Big South record for single-match attendance, 1,622, set on Nov. 10, 2007 against Radford, while they drew 1,583 for a 3-0 sweep of Winthrop, Oct. 27, 2007.

Dishing it Out With 1,427 career assists, junior Anna Willey needs 41 more assists to pass Lara Bartolomeo (2004-07) into 10th place in program history in career assists. Willey led the conference with 11.29 assists per set during Big South matches. She also posted a team-high 12 double-doubles, while adding 12 40-assist matches, seven 50-assist contests and one 60-assist match. Freshman Hannah Morris recorded 47 assists, four aces, 12 digs and four blocks against Kennesaw State on Aug. 27 in her first career start.
