“KFC and W SUNDAY” – APRIL 3, 2016

We are building a very special Sunday at Mt. Zion around the words of Ephesians 4:32 – “be kind to one another, compassionate, forgiving one another, as God in Christ has forgiven you.” It is Kindness, Compassion, Forgiveness Sunday with the Welcome of Waffles thrown in.

At each of the Services that Sunday, there will be brief but pointed messages on KFC, aimed at helping us grow in expressing each of these qualities in our lives. And then, following the 9:00AM Service, Belgian waffles and fruit and toppings will be served in the Fellowship Hall to all our worshipers. Following the 11:00AM Ser-vice a meal of Kentucky Fried Chicken and biscuits and homemade cole slaw will be served.

All of this will be a wonderful way for us to celebrate the Sunday after Easter and the growing, vibrant, loving life that the Resurrection of Christ offers to us. It will also be another opportunity for each of us to invite friends and neighbors to come and worship and enjoy some wonderful KFC and W together. No matter how you look at it, it is going to be a special Sunday. We look forward to seeing you and

Bring a side dish or dessert to share! Call (410-531-2271) or email Debbie Burdio

([email protected]) for more details.

Would you like to have the faith to walk on water?

Coming on May 8, we will form a new study based on John Ortberg’s book You Can’t Walk on Water, If You Don’t Get Out of the Boat.

This six session study helps us to respond to Jesus’ invitation to walk on water. As we relate to the story in Matthew 14, we will find ways to grow stronger in faith, face our fears and challenges, and live into Jesus calling. Study includes June 11 – Lunch cruise to finish the book study. You don’t have to attend the study to join us for this fellowship. Please reserve your place now – contact Debra Leiss or any member of the small groups team

June – Grilling with the Gospels Beginning on Wednesday, June 22 and continuing for three more Wednesdays at 6:00PM, we will meet at the outdoor grill and after a grilled meal appropriate to each Gos-pel, we will share in a study of the heart of the words of Good News that Gospel brings. It will be like eating with Jesus!

GRASSROOTS ROUTE 1 DAY CENTER update

The next time Mt. Zion will be serving the meal and desserts at the Route 1 Day Shelter will be in May. Thank you for all of your past gifts of food and time.

THRIFT SHOP UPDATE

Since January 1st, the Christian Services Thrift Shop has been operating under The Salvation Army and the

changeover has gone well. The store operates the same, and we always need volunteers and donations of clean clothing and household goods and furniture in good condition. Sue, the SA caseworker, handles requests for assis-tance. The store hours are the same – Tuesdays and Thursdays and the 2nd and 4th Saturdays – from 10 AM to 1 PM. All donations and funds received are earmarked for helping those in need in Howard County. It’s a great place to get good bargains, so come in and browse at 3267 Pine Orchard Lane, Ellicott City (just off Rt. 40 one block west of Centennial Lane).

Each church associated with the Thrift Shop is asked to provide additional helpers during three months of the year. Mt. Zion’s first turn is April. If you could give a few hours of service during April on any of the days noted above, please contact Margaret Rose (301-843-3558). Additionally, contributions of paper products, dishwashing and laundry detergents, and boxed/canned food may be placed in the basket in the East Narthex.

COVENANT DISCIPLESHIP GROUP Joining Together for a Closer Walk with Jesus

“Lord, I want to be a Christian in my heart”…and in all that I do and with all whom I meet. It is the wish of us all to be a disciple of Christ, and each of us has probably found that we need help and support to make that happen. Jesus knew that discipleship grows best in a group when he gathered the twelve that were his first disci-ples. Now we at Mt. Zion are being offered the opportunity to be a part of a group whose purpose is to enable each of us to grow in our Christian discipleship. Beginning in April, Pastor David is inviting people to be a part of what is called a “Covenant Discipleship Group”: a group that covenants with each other to take well defined steps is spiritual growth. Each group would have up to seven members and establish a time to meet weekly for one hour. Each would develop a mutually agreed upon covenant of action items in four areas of Christian life: Devotion, Worship, Compassion, and Justice. Once developed, this covenant would be the standard to be enacted in each person’s life each week. When the group meets, following an opening devotion, the agenda is to give each person the opportunity to share how it has gone in her/his life during the past week in relation to the items of the covenant. As the life of the group and those individuals in it progresses, there will be opportunity to modify or add to the covenant so that life keeps moving forward. Experience in these groups indicates that the mutual support and accountability they provide enables the people in them to make significant development in bringing the life they live in closer harmony with the life of Christ and to experience the abundant life that Christ offers us. (John 10:10) The goal, of course, is to be able to say with St. Paul, “It is no longer I who live, but it is Christ who lives in me.” (Galatians 2:20) To become a part of a Covenant Discipleship Group, please contact Pastor David at [email protected] or at the church, 301-854-2324x26

Silver Ladle Winner - Mt. Zion’s Frances Colvin

Congratulations to Frances Colvin for winning the Silver Ladle Award at the Bridges to Housing Stability’s 2016 Chili Cook Off. Overall, including corporate sponsorships, Bridges raised nearly $35,000 to support its’ programs to prevent homelessness in Howard County. Frances Colvin’s deli-cious chili, featuring ground turkey and Hatch chili’s from New Mexico, was a crowd-pleasing favorite.
