Gleeson College celebrated National Science week with a number of events. Students in Years 8 and 9 participated in a series of Science and Engineering challenges, ranging from Building Bridges and Rescue Devices to constructing and testing Bungee Cords and Flat Pack chairs.

102ND WORLD DAY OF MIGRANTS > “Think More Deeply”

Migrant and Refugee SundayThe Bishops of Australia have designated Sunday August 28 as Migrant and Refugee Sunday. The theme is “Migrants and Refugees Challenge Us - The Response of the Gospel of Mercy”.

In his message to the world Pope Francis challenges us to think more deeply when he says that; “Migrants are our brothers and sisters in search of a better life, far away from poverty, hunger, exploitation and the unjust distribution of the planet’s resources which are meant to be equitably shared by all. Don’t we all want a better, more decent and prosperous life to share with our loved ones?” Archbishop Philip Wilson invites all members of our community to the 102nd World Day of Migrants and Refugees Mass this Sunday 28 August, 2.30pm at St Patrick’s Church, Grote St, Adelaide.

Book WeekThis week we celebrate Book week. Book week is the longest running children’s festival in Australia, celebrating its 71st birthday this year. The theme for 2016 is: ‘Australia! Story Country’. One of the most important and beneficial things that you can develop in your children is a love of reading and literature. There have been a number of activities here at Gleeson this week to celebrate Book week including a workshop by author Dan McGuiness and the Book Cup finals. In this digital age books are too often neglected, so I trust that the focus of Book week reignites the wonder of reading for many.

Parents & Friends Quiz NightMy deep thanks and appreciation to the Gleeson College Parents and Friends for their outstanding organisation of our annual Quiz Night held last Saturday evening. Thank you to the organising committee who worked tirelessly for the past few months. The auction, silent auction, raffles and prizes were outstanding. Thank you to those who donated items for the event also. We are already looking forward to next year! Thank you to the P&F, this group really embodies servant leadership and connection and events such as the Quiz Night do so much in building our great community here at Gleeson College.

Campus AssembliesOn Tuesday we held our annual Campus Assemblies in the Pedare Christian College chapel. Once again it was a wonderful event that was a celebration of all that is positive and good about our unique campus. For me, once again, the performance that perfectly embodies the benefits of our shared campus and learning was the combined concert band where students from each of the three schools performed the theme to Game of Thrones. Each school had been practising independently, and then came together at this assembly, and the end result was brilliant! The ability that our campus provides students to not only access the quality teaching and learning that exists at Gleeson College, but then to extend and enhance this with the shared opportunities in learning and facilities available as a result of our collaboration with Pedare Christian College and Golden Grove High School means that our

2016 P&F QUIZ NIGHT > A Fun Night of Wonderful Support, Spirit & Goodwill!

The Gleeson College Parents & Friends Committee hosted our annual fundraising Quiz Night in the Dame Roma Mitchell Centre on Saturday night. With more than 150 people in attendance, the event showed wonderful support, spirit and goodwill within our College community.

This isn't to say it wasn't competitive between tables however! 15 tables of teams hotly contested the quiz on the night, and enjoyed entering the great prize raffles, coin toss and major silent auction. The night was a huge success, with more than $5,000 raised with proceeds helping to fund extra activities and resources for our Gleeson students.

This night could not have happened without the generous support of our local and wider community, with 2016 seeing an increase in the amount of wonderful prizes donated. We would like to sincerely thank all of our sponsors for their generosity and continued support of Gleeson College. Please explore the 2016 Sponsors Board in this issue of The Globe (pages 6&7) and support these businesses that have donated items in support of our students this year.

We would like to say thank you also to Mr Richard Milne, for constructing the quiz, and to Principal Andrew Baker, who was again our Quiz Master and did a fantastic job!

Thanks also to Rebecca Sinclair for administrative support and Susan Smith for all her work with us. Finally, a big thank you to the many P&F parents and students who worked extremely hard to ensure that the 2016 Quiz Night was a huge success and a lot of fun!

Kelly Martin,on behalf of Gleeson P&F Committee

“Just wanted to let you know the Chris’ Crew had an absolute ball on Saturday nightat the Quiz Night. Please pass on our thanks to all the workers who worked so hard

to make it such a success. Looking forward to next year.”- Chris Forte (Gleeson Old Scholar Family)

students simply have every opportunity to excel.

In Pursuit of ExcellenceNext Wednesday our Twilight Soccer First XI Team will play Prince Alfred College in the Grand Final of the Twilight Soccer League (TSL) Cup at Adelaide Shores Football Centre on West Beach Rd, West Beach. Kick-off is at 4.30pm. The TSL is an elite competition that is comprised of the best Catholic and Independent School teams. To make the grand final is a wonderful achievement from the group, who have galvanised this year under the expert guidance of our Specialist Program Coach Travis Dodd.

The team consists of Year 10, 11 and 12 students, and they are a very talented group who have combined exceptionally well this year. Regardless of the result (although a win would be nice) we are very proud of these boys who have represented Gleeson College with great distinction this year. We wish them all the best next Wednesday!

Mr Andrew Baker,Principal

Students and families are reminded to be wary of approaches from strangers, especially when they are unaccompanied or travelling to and

from school. If they are approached students should not respond and should not accept offers of rides or gifts.

Students should seek the assistance of other nearby adults if they feel unsafe and should report the event to a trusted adult (parent or school

staff member) as soon as possible.

SAPOL advises that taking out a mobile phone and calling police can deter the offender and they recommend the student making a formal

report to their closest police station.

YEAR 8 PHYSICAL EDUCATION > Indigenous Dance WorkshopsYEAR 9 STEM POSTER COMPETITION > Judging of 2016 Finalists

This term, our Year 8 Physical Education students have been

getting their groove on by partaking in a five-week unit of ‘Dance’.

Last Thursday, we were privileged to have guest presenters Aaron and

Jack Buckskin from Indigenous dance troupe ‘Kuma Kaaru’ teach our students about the different

aspects of Aboriginal dance and the significance of land and animals

to the Aboriginal people. Jack and Aaron lead the students through a workshop of two dances which was then performed in its entirety at the

conclusion of the lesson!

A shapshot of what the students learnt can be viewed on our Gleeson YouTube channel by clicking on the

following links:https://youtu.be/g_QnS6nTCAMhttps://youtu.be/g_QnS6nTCAM

This experience provided our students with a valuable insight

into Indigenous culture and from all accounts they thoroughly

enjoyed this opportunity! I’d like to thank the students for taking part wholeheartedly and also Jack and

Aaron for facilitating this great session for us.

Although a little shy at first, the students have also participated in traditional folk dances such as the Military Two Step, Heel Toe Polka and Progressive Jive. This week, students have been ‘around the

world’ by participating in a range of cultural dances from Russia,

Germany and the US just to name a few and have been showcasing

dances from other cultures, ranging from Bollywood to Zorba, which they researched and rehearsed in small

groups.

Well done to all Year 8 students!

The Year 9 STEM Poster Competition is an annual event at Gleeson College, with Year 9 Learning

Teams collaboratively designing and conducting their own scientific experiments, and then presenting

their findings as an engaging poster.

Year 9 Science teachers selected the three top finalists from each

Learning Team, and then members of Gleeson staff and leadership offered their expertise, from a

variety of different learning areas, in judging the finalists’ posters on

Wednesday this week.

Congratulations to all of our finalists for their fantastic efforts. All

finalists will be invited to our 2016 STEM Expo to be held in the DRMC on Wednesday 21 September where an overall winner will be announced.

Ashleigh Schofield,Science Key Learning Coordinator

Congratulations to all our Year 9 STEM Poster Finalists! Grand Winners will be presented at our 2016 STEM Expo!!

Campus Defence News> Postings

It is around this time of year that many Defence families are finding out about

possible postings elsewhere, and this will naturally mean big changes for families and children. If you find yourself in this position, please let me know and I can offer additional

support to our Defence students, as

well as help with questions regarding schools in the new location and

assistance with pathways for your child.

There is some very specific and useful information on the Defence Community Organisation website that you may like to access. Head to www.defence.gov.au/dco and follow the links to ‘On the

Move’ and ‘Moving with Children’.

> Course CounsellingOf course this is also the time of year that students are thinking seriously about their future and what subjects are the most beneficial to lead into a preferred pathway. This process can

be very simple for some and extremely complex for others! With Defence

families, there is the added challenge

of thinking about the possibility of how this pathway will be affected if there is a future posting on the

horizon… Is this pathway available in another state? Can I transfer to any university? Do I need to study

particular subjects as pre-requisites for my senior years’ interstate?

If you would like to discuss any questions you or your child may have, please feel free to make contact with me by phoning 8282 6400 or emailing

me at:[email protected]

Our Year 8/9 Boys Indoor Soccer Team have progressed through to the State Finals following a solid

qualifying performance which saw them undefeated at the Round Robin Tournament held at MARS Stadium

recently.

Wins against Glenunga High School (4-1), Oakbank Area School (25-0), Roma Mitchell Secondary College

(9-1), Parafield Gardens HS (11-2) and Pinnacle Christian College (9-2)

ensured the team qualified for the coveted State Finals.

The team, made up of Cooper Nunn (9 MMMAH), Ryan Mayo (9 MMMOR),

Robert Shyti (9 DMMCC), Morgan Evans (9 FMWIL), Thomas Ayre (9 FMECO), Dre Stirling (9 MMMAH), Giovanny Gutierrez (9 DMJEF), Ethan Crout (9 FMHAU) and Lachlan Wallace (9 MMMAH) all played

well on the day. All of the boys were amongst the goals with the team scoring

an amazing 57 goals across their five games played, with goal keeper Robert Shyti even getting on the score sheet

with a well converted penalty!

The boys now look forward to competing at the State Finals, which will be held at MARS Stadium on Wednesday 28
