contentsMassive goes tinyI’ve lost count of the times I’ve marched around exhibition halls in search of the electronics industry’s ‘next big thing’. In fact, as you read this issue I’ll be preparing myself for a number of ‘stand marathons’. This time, however, things are different. Let me explain. For 30-years I’ve been swept along on a tide of technology and application innovations. However, four or five years ago, as I asked people for their technology predictions I noticed they were having to think about their answer. I too was struggling. I’ve thought about this daily ever since and have finally come to my conclusion. The search for the next one big thing is, for a while, over. We have enough technical capability to make most of our dreams a reality given enough time and money. There are no missing links in the technology chain. I believe electronics is now going to enter a period where one big thing gives way to thousands of little things. Endless tiny improvements to thousands of already capable technologies will aggregate to move humanity forward at a rapid pace. By tiny steps, current technology will consume less power, be easier to make, become more reliable and last longer. I think that’s called sustainable.None of these changes will be obvious, most will be barely visible but together they will make a difference the world has never before experienced. So as I wander the halls of future exhibitions I will be delighted to bump into the next big thing, but I’ll be equally fascinated by the little things.

Distribution M

arket Watch

It’s common for many large global electronics OEMs to forge close alliances with key semiconductor and other component suppliers to guarantee continuity of supply, gain early access to the newest technology, and receive best-in-class pricing for critical components.

However, smaller OEMs and contract manufacturers also form partnerships with suppliers, although not with global semiconductor companies, but with distributors. For certain customers, distributors help them design new products, reduce cost through bonded inventory and other supply chain programs, and help them manage cash flow through extended payment terms and preferential prices.

Distributors have thousands of customers and, of course, cannot partner with all of them. In fact, many small OEM or contract manufacturing customers don’t

want or need to form alliances with distributors. But distributors say a growing portion of their customer base want to form strategic relationships with distributors to help reduce costs, improve time-to-market and generally be more competitive. For such customers, distributors will tailor a program that addresses the customers’ needs.

Karim Yasmine, corporate vice president of Future Electronics, said the Montreal-based distributor offers “differentiating value” to the customers it partners with. The value can vary depending on what the customers’ needs are, but can include offering the customer extended time for payment or keeping six months of inventory for them, providing testing, transportation and other services.

“It always comes back to the nature of the company,” said Yasmine. “For some customers, their priority is

to reduce inventory levels. If that’s the case we can look at a bonded inventory program specifically for that customer where we will bond the product,” he said.

Many of Future’s customers are electronics manufacturing services (EMS) providers and the distributor has strategic relationships with some of them that are looking for “differentiated value.”

“They look for a distributor that can offer them financial terms because they are purchasing based on purchase price variance so pricing is a differentiated value,” said Yasmine.

In addition EMS providers look for “inventory commitment” from their distributor partners as EMS providers can lose an OEM’s business if they don’t have the parts on-time or if they have excess inventory, he said.

“So when they do business with us, the basis of our supply chain programs is to provide continuity of supply and on-time delivery and flexibility,” said Yasmine. “We make

sure that the buyers we are dealing with at the EMS company are getting their products on time,” he said.

More partnership engagementsTom Vanderheyden, TTI vice president, Americas sales, said that TTI’s partnership engagements are “certainly growing, both in terms of new engagements as well as the broadening of existing partnerships. Continuity and assured supply from a trusted source is at the heart of what drives customers to TTI,” he said.

Many of TTI’s customers want to partner with the distributor because TTI is the “largest, global IP&E specialist with an unparalleled commitment to carrying inventory,” he said. TTI is a “recognized leader in supply chain management” and the majority of TTI’s North American sales are defined by various supply chain management engagements, said Vanderheyden. Such engagements range from bonded inventory/MRP to sophisticated on-site, VMI managed programs. TTI also provides a suite of on-line tools for quoting,

procurement, backlog visibility and billing, Vanderheyden noted.

He said rather that providing “cookie- cutter” solutions, TTI tailors programs to fit the customer’s needs. To assist in evaluation and implementation, TTI employs lean Six-Sigma green belt certified supply chain managers who are regionally positioned across North America and in all global regions.

Many of TTI’s customers want to reduce their total cost. “Over the years customers have embraced TTI’s unique ability to provide solutions that drive a leadership position in total acquisition cost or cost of ownership thereby reducing or eliminating ‘soft costs.’” Vanderheyden said.

TTI is an IP&E and discretes specialist and customers value TTI’s supplier partnerships that “fuel TTI’s unparalleled broad and deep inventory, providing more than 70 per cent of inventory available-to-sell (ATS), more than any other source,” he said.

Vanderheyden said many customers view TTI as strategic because it has local resources for engineering support, supply chain management expertise and financial services.

“Unlike many competitors, TTI views inventory as an asset and not a liability,” he said. For the majority of TTI’s supplier partners, the company is the number one or two distributor and, in many cases, the suppliers’ largest customer, according to Vanderheyden.

Many customers that partner with TTI “realize and appreciate TTI’s unique leadership position” concerning IP&E inventory, product knowledge, supply chain expertise, he said. As a result many such customers will consolidate their spends for parts with TTI.

“In most cases for supply chain engagements, TTI manages the

majority of the passives spend and a significant portion of interconnect/electro-mechanical,” said Vanderheyden. “TTI partners with many customers who have the capability to aggregate global requirements to address volume pricing requirements,” he said.

Another distributor that partners with some electronics manufacturers is Digi-Key, based in Thief River Falls, Minn. While Digi-Key provides small volumes of components to engineers designing new products, it also sells components for low and medium-volume manufacturing, often to contract manufacturers.

Removing inefficiencies But even before supplying parts for production, some of Digi-Key’s EMS provider customers look for help from the distributor. EMS providers want Digi-Key to assist them on manufacturing issues “to take out inefficiencies,” said Chris Beeson, executive vice President, sales & supplier management, Digi-Key Electronics.

“What they appreciate is at the front end of the design we can scrub the bill of materials to make sure the correct part numbers, data sheets and documentation are all there,” he said.

“They then know from a manufacturability standpoint that these parts are suitable for production,” said Beeson. The contract manufacturer doesn’t “have to do all that due diligence so it really is a win-win for everyone,” he said.

Dan Hill, business president of sales and marketing for North America for Newark element14, said the distributor’s “largest customer partners are looking for value beyond having the right products on the shelf.” Such products include components, test equipment automation and control products, tools and MRO products.

He said Newark assists its customer partners throughout their value chains helping them improve their processes, providing services such as design, kitting, customized product manufacturing, stockroom management and expediting services.

He said the number of Newark’s strategic customers is growing because it is an “authorized distributor for some of the best brands in the world.”

Partnering with startupsWhile many established OEM and EMS providers have forged close relationships with distributors, some startups are also partnering with distributors. Hill noted there has been an “an explosion of innovation coming from companies borne in the past 10-15 years like FitBit, Tesla, Nest and GoPro.”

A startup may have a great idea for a product, but will need help developing the product. Many distributors often can provide technical expertise about parts and design services as well as supply parts for prototypes and for production.

While startups represent growth potential for distributors, there are other advantages for distributors in partnering with them. One advantage is that young engineers get exposed to the

distribution business model and become aware that distribution could be a career option for them.

Yasmine said a challenge for distribution is bringing new talent into the industry. “A lot of kids graduate college and they want to work at Google or Amazon, or FaceBook. New engineering graduates often want to work at “trendy software companies,” he said.

But distribution is a “dynamic industry and there are a lot of things going on” that may interest young engineers, he said. “By helping startups we are helping talent come into the industry and show them the industry is an exciting place to be,” he said.

Whether it is with startups or well-established OEMs, partnering with certain customers “truly helps drive innovation on both sides,” said Hill.

For instance by working closely with some customers, Newark can “prove out” a value-add service that looks good on paper. For instance, when Newark rolled out its kitting service, “we worked closely with one of our top customers to measure the benefits on both sides before it was clear that it would be profitable,” he said.

“Our largest customer partners are looking for value beyond

having the right products on the shelf,” said Dan Hill, business

president of sales and marketing for North America for Newark

2017 forecasts

Electronics Sourcing asked 11 electronics industry figureheads for their summary of 2016 and predictions for 2017. Read on for 11 pages of facts, figures and opinions on the future shape of the US electronics distribution market

In summary, there are some interesting themes setting the scene for the coming 12-months, including: market stability; mergers and acquisitions; independent distribution and growth sectors.

Market stabilityIn general, comments re market growth, contraction and stability mirror similar comments from the previous 12-months. Markets are stable. Some technology and application groups are growing while others are shrinking. For example, IoT is driving growth in low power wireless communications but, logically, fewer wires mean fewer connectors.

Mergers and acquisitionsIn all areas of electronics, from semiconductors to distributors themselves, mergers and acquisitions have been a feature of the past 12-months. This can lead to a rationalization of product groups and shifting line card offerings.

The knock-on effects range from difficulties caused by obsolescence to the benefits of a simpler supplier base.

Independent distributionOn the subject of obsolescence, many independent distributors have spent the previous 12-months upping their game regarding the processes and standards required to offer the product traceability and guarantees that buyers now demand. Expect more over the coming 12-months.

Growth sectorsPredictable, growing technology sectors remain the likes of IoT and LED lighting. What makes both of these interesting is that they are not single component solutions: they are system solutions. Thus, both the component manufacturers and their distribution partners are forming ever stronger technical alliances capable of supporting the design chains and supply chains required to fulfil complete system solutions.

At the end of 2015, the industry was anticipating a recovery from weak conditions, but this didn’t manifest as expected. While conditions firmed up somewhat in the first quarter, the follow through to the second and third quarter was not nearly as strong as predicted; rather the same slow

improvement. Despite this, 2016 has been a year of momentum for Sager Electronics with growth coming from the products and markets where the company has invested heavily.

Looking ahead to 2017, end markets such as medical, instrumentation and lighting will lead the way, outpacing what is expected to be a two to three per cent overall growth rate. These markets are serving trends such as portability and improved information transfer in the medical device market and energy efficiency in the lighting market.

On the service side, demand for value-added logistics has already reached a record high, with customers utilizing services such as materials requirement planning, advanced ship notifications, special labelling and bar coding. Now customers are requesting even more value, such as specialized product knowledge and design services.

In response, Sager is strategically building its core competencies and has already launched a specialized team of power sales engineers focused on the design and sale of power supplies. As part of that strategy, Sager Power Systems services its accounts with both a field sales representative and a power systems sales engineer, thereby serving the needs of both sides of the sourcing equation. We also plan to create an adjacent strategy for sourcing thermal management components, which will launch in 2017. This concept can be replicated as the market demands.

2017 forecasts

Like 2015, 2016 has been a buyers’ market for electronic components in North America. Units shipped has grown in almost all commodities but top lines have not necessarily benefited. Short, stable, lead times and excess capacity have given end customers a lot of leverage.

Midyear reports from public supply chain companies and industry associations like ECIA revealed a positive trend in bookings and billings, but the run-rated first half 2016 sales figures suggested that this year will be another down year. Early third quarter 2016 results suggest continued improvement and positive book-to-bill trends, indicating the second half of the year is up relative to the second half of 2015. Net-net, it feels like the North American market for components is going to finish flat to last year, on a revenue basis.

Digging deeperDigging a little deeper into commodity and market segments, we find connector sales have tapered off after a couple of years of good growth. Passives will probably finish down two to three per cent for the second year running, with growth in magnetics and circuit protection being offset by decline in capacitors

and resistors. That said, the capacitor decline in 2016 won’t be nearly as steep as the prior year, as the market has normalized relative to the oil and gas industry plunge that began early in 2015.

Electromechanical components are trending down in 2016 following nice growth in the prior couple of years. Within e-mech, power supplies and sensors continue to grow, but a tough year in switches and relays has pulled the commodity down overall. The elephant in the year is semiconductors, which, even with some stability in the second half, appear to be headed down year-on-year faster than most other product groups.

Looking at specific markets, the growth segments remain aerospace, medical and automotive, although commercial vehicle growth has cooled some. The industrial market segment, which is large and diverse, continues to be disappointingly lukewarm.

Macroeconomic indicators suggest that the third quarter was the low point in the cycle for the U.S. economy, which means that as the year winds down, we should see some lift going into 2017. Core inflation, excluding food and energy, has been steadily increasing this year, which will probably begin to manifest as more stable component prices, especially when the trend in wage growth rates is factored in.

Bullish forecastsKeep an eye on forecasts for U.S. industrial production, electronic equipment production and U.S. gross domestic product. Most are fairly bullish, indicating an improving environment for all businesses next year. There is plenty of speculation about the impact of the upcoming election but, I think that whichever way things go, the U.S. business sector is tough enough and smart enough to navigate the resulting obstacle course.

I am confident that component demand will strengthen in 2017, and in fact there are already early signs as lead times are extending on products like multilayer-ceramic capacitors. At the moment, most creeping lead times are a result of inventory levels that were whittled away in 2015 beginning to be replaced. Increasing demand will add additional pressure and as the market improves, component manufacturers will have to make

a decision; add capacity to grow sales or maintain capacity to firm up pricing and grow profits. Regarding interconnect, passive and e-mech, I believe that for most of 2017, the latter path will be chosen.

For electronic component makers and sellers, things are going to be better next year. Not so good that 2017 will be a sellers’ market, but good enough that the market will be more balanced between buyers and sellers than it has been these past few years.

Ultimately, I expect next year to be better for makers, sellers, and consumers of electronic components. For TTI, this translates into maintaining component inventory levels at best-in-class levels and more than doubling its North American footprint with a new, purpose-built distribution center coming online early in the new year and an increasing number of proximity warehouses in Mexico.

2017 forecasts

As predicted, 2016 has been a time of change for the independent distribution segment, with the number of players having been reduced. Original equipment manufacturers and contract manufacturers have shrunk their approved vendor lists due to quality concerns and

increasingly stringent requirements; the survivors have figured out better ways to service their customers.

On the high reliability side, there has been increased focus on defense federal acquisition regulations, while the continued proliferation of counterfeit parts has caused consternation throughout the supply chain. As a result, 2016 saw the AS6081 fraudulent/counterfeit electronic parts standard gain some

traction, with several independent distributors successfully registering. It looks like 2017 is the year in which the AS6171 test methods standard will finally be implemented and a revision to AS6081 is due, which will bring further changes to the industry.

For high quality independent distributors, and the test labs supporting them, there may be a push for ISO17025 lab accreditation to show conformance to these cutting edge protocols. They will want to demonstrate fully DFAR compliant counterfeit mitigation programs.

By utilizing only trusted suppliers who have established these programs, OEMs and CMs can limit the risks when buying in the open market. Thus, it looks like 2017 will see many of this year’s trends continue, as both OEM customers and their suppliers get stronger and smarter, and work together to improve the supply chain.

www.4starelectronics.com

For America II, 2016 was all about continued growth of its franchise lines, increasing on-the-ground presence in Europe, particularly Germany and Eastern Europe, and expanding in Asia, with the addition of a distribution center in Hong

Kong. In terms of overall trading conditions, 2016 has been relatively stable. Growth in the Americas and Asia has been steady, while Europe has experienced stronger market conditions than predicted, which is expected to continue into 2017.

One noticeable trend this year, however, is a significant rise in end-of-life component activity, as a result, in part, of mergers and acquisitions over recent months. These will no doubt shake the market over the next year and it will be vital for customers to implement a comprehensive EOL program. My advice is to sort that out proactively, before it becomes a ‘must-have.’

With short lead times of around 10 to 12 weeks and plenty of supply, the ball is definitely in the buyer’s court. Many customers are confident that their sales will increase through 2017 with the introduction of new products and it’s interesting to note that many customers are returning

to the domestic Americas electronic manufacturing services market.

Looking ahead, 2017 will present lots of opportunities for distributors to differentiate themselves. Bear in mind, however, that although market conditions look favorable for now, the key for distributors is to remain nimble and ready to adapt if the industry landscape does shift.

2017 forecasts

For those in the technology business, this is a thrilling time because these days, everyone feels the impact of technology. Arguably, it is making our lives better, or at the very least, more fascinating.

A smartphone or tablet, for example, is the electronic equivalent of the classic Swiss Army Knife. Need to deposit a check? Simply snap a picture of it and two clicks later you’re done, with no bank visit required. Need a ride? Request one from Uber and the driver arrives in minutes, no cash required. Read the news, watch TV or movies, find your way to

a distant point guided by GPS, and more, all from a device the size of a small notepad.

The future holds yet more promise, mainly because of the creative problem-solving skills of engineers designing products using electronic components. Mouser is therefore excited to be introducing new products for over 600 component manufacturers, helping to fast-track the design process for the world’s electronic design engineers.

Creative solutionsIn 2017 and beyond, we will see even more devices and gadgets that will save time, money, labor, resources and lives. Take the self-driving car as an example. The global automotive electronics control market alone is

poised to reach approximately $66.8 billion by 2025. Advances in electronic component technology, including sensors, are making this possible.

Technology will make driving safer, staying in shape easier, balancing the electrical grid simpler and diagnosing medical conditions more precise, to name but a few things. All of these fantastic developments begin at the component level, where tiny devices and computer programs work together to deliver solutions that were only a futuristic vision years ago.

Millions of these leading edge electronic components are sold every year by Mouser Electronics and shipped out the same day to hundreds of thousands of customers across the globe. Looking ahead, Mouser is optimistic because every day it helps customers find the technical solutions that will, one day, shape our future.

Consumers are continually migrating to smart devices that are increasingly miniaturized. This is driving demand for low profile, low-cost, battery holders packaged for automated assembly on high density PCBs. We also anticipate strong growth in wearable devices, mainly for medical

and fashion markets. Wearable devices often require power management solutions that are untethered to the circuit board, requiring battery holders to be equipped with wire harnesses and remote on-off switches.

Both consumer and industrial markets are influenced by the burgeoning internet of things, which is predicted to encompass up to 50 billion interconnected devices by 2020. Specifically, dynamic growth is foreseen for the industrial internet of things, as virtually all exterior environments become fertile ground for remote wireless sensors. This could give rise to many ‘breakthrough’ battery-powered technologies.

Rapid expansion of the IIoT will spur demand for both primary, non-rechargeable, lithium batteries and for rechargeable lithium-ion batteries that deliver extended service life in extreme environmental conditions. Challenging environments will boost demand for ruggedized battery holders

constructed of temperature-resistant plastic, with gold plated contacts to enhance corrosion-resistance and ensure reliable electrical connections.

Based on these factors, and the virtually unlimited potential of the IIoT, we expect to see sustainable growth in demand for battery holders, including above average growth for high reliability models.

Innovation in LEDs continues to fuel growth for the lighting industry, prompting new applications and lowered total product costs. Not only are smart LED driver technologies inspiring new products, they are also bringing new revenue potential to existing products, like downlights

and high and low bay lighting. Take ERP’s new LED driver with Bluetooth-capability for example. This enables communication with other Bluetooth sensors, such as those for occupancy and daylight harvesting, making it possible to build on legacy products through expanded capabilities.

Horticultural lighting is another exciting area. It has become one of the fastest growing LED lighting markets thanks to a dramatic improvement in LED performance. LEDs are

now edging out older halogen and legacy horticulture lighting solutions by providing product and energy cost savings through improved performance. Cree’s offering, for instance, includes LEDs that deliver the full spectrum of light to imitate natural sunlight, plus discrete wavelength LEDs that target different crops and various stages of plant growth.

In a bid to underpin customer innovation, WPG Americas employs a technical support team, as well as partnering with manufacturers of LED components and modules, LED drivers, secondary optics and thermal manufacturers. Regarding production, WPG has also partnered with lighting integrators, ultimately providing a total lighting solution.

Looking ahead, it’s exciting to see how smart LED technologies will inevitably make us more efficient and effective.

2017 forecasts

Going into 2016 we knew the market would be challenging so we set realistic goals, while still aiming for competitive growth compared to the industry. Through the first three quarters, we are exceeding expectations for topline revenue and we are especially encouraged by our growth in international marketplaces, as well as noting nice progress in North America.

Looking to 2017, we believe it will be similar to 2016, with no strong stimulus to create optimism. We do feel, however, that areas such as internet of things and the maker market encourage the engineering community to remain active, which plays well into Digi-Key’s business

model and front-end design support.

Changing supplier landscapeWith no major concerns related to inventory lead times, Digi-Key believes factory capacity is sufficient, which, coupled with its own strong stock position, will enable it to support any potential uptick in business. We are, however, watching the supplier landscape as there have been many acquisitions within the last two years. Acquisitions lead to product rationalization, which can create uncertainty in the supply chain. As always, Digi-Key will strive to maintain a strong inventory position.

The last 12 months have also seen other changes. Although the beginning of the year started with fairly low momentum, as the year continued, Digi-Key saw healthy demand, with encouraging growth for customers, as well as for Digi-Key’s own business. To continue that growth

and demand, Digi-Key is working on various enhancements to support its supply chain solutions.

Support toolsCustomers are seeing new options on the website, and in other communication methods, all of which are designed to help take the volatility out of the supply chain. In addition to enhancing its web tools supporting the sourcing community, Digi-Key has been improving the overall experience of its website.

Many suppliers that have historically been a creator of components are now working to provide associated products, manufactured by them and complementary suppliers. For a purchasing professional, this simplifies the process of ordering all the parts needed to work with specific components. There is also a movement for more embedded designs or modules, which can potentially decrease component count and speed the design process.

Finally, Digi-Key is encouraged by the use of its on-line design tools, which allow the sourcing community to work with components and build stronger relationships with their design teams.

2017 forecasts

This year Lansdale Semiconductor celebrates its 51st year, which has been better than predicted, says president of Lansdale, R. Dale Lillard.

Lillard explained: “Commercial market sales for our products have held up as customers are not redesigning in today’s ‘slow is normal’ economy.

“Similarly, military product sales have continued to do well with the Department of Defense looking to maintain older equipment as new replacement costs have soared. Adding to this, the military is also becoming more cautious about purchasing counterfeit components. It is choosing to purchase product from legitimate contracted semiconductor aftermarket suppliers, such as Lansdale and its sales channels, instead of sourcing from internet brokers. This purchasing policy change will continue to help our business.

“Ultimately, we predict 2017 sales will be flat, in line with 2016, since customers do not predict a change in demand. We expect similar lead times and good product availability.”

2017 forecasts

Over the past 12 months, we’ve experienced an across-the-board softness in business. That has not changed in two to three years.

Our strategy has been to integrate vertically and we now manufacture almost all of the cable used in our power cords. We produce both North American and international cable,

with the latter carrying VDE and other European agency approvals. In addition, we offer cable with both Korean and Chinese approvals, which allows us to make almost every cord and cord set used globally with appropriate approvals. Other products include several IEC 60320 inlets and outlets, which we manufacture in one of our three factories, as well as a range of NEMA straight-blade machine mounting outlets.

As a company, we maintain a large finished goods inventory and ship most orders from stock the same day we receive an order. We have a one-week manufacturing lead time on standard products and have maintained that fast cycle time for the past five years. We don’t expect any changes to this in 2017.

Interpower’s power cords and other power system components are sold to a large number of customers, all of whom individually represent a small portion of total sales. In spite of this broad base, overall sales are seven per cent lower in 2016

than in 2015. This weakness in sales extends to most of our customers. We believe an important reason for sales weakness is that we directly export about 25 per cent of our total sales and sell another 50 per cent of output to customers who will export the products our components are used on. The strong dollar, combined with weak foreign economies, results in weak orders from most of our customers and we are projecting another seven per cent decline in overall business in 2017.

The past year has been one of transition for ECCO. Bookings have been healthy and the company has grown its customer backlog, moving from a more reactive supplier, to a more proactive supply chain partner. We have also received our AS9100C accreditation and have seen a number of requests from high reliability industries such as aerospace and defense to assist in their production

and maintenance and repair operations.

As a high reliability interconnect supplier we had an interesting turn of events midyear with several suppliers affected by factory moves, production lines shut down, and legislative constraints on material flow. This created some havoc, and in the coming year we expect those issues to resolve, allowing for more normalized lead times and pricing stability.

Given the US elections coming up, we also expect a very different trading pattern to emerge for 2017. Both leading candidates have views on key industry segments that will affect

consumption of interconnect solutions. For instance, a Republican candidate is typically good for military and defense spending, while a Democratic victor may legislate an increase in wages, supporting consumer spending in areas such as internet of things. At ECCO we expect any change to be positive for our products and their associated consumption.

In recent times, customers have been asking us for more customized solutions, so we are addressing that demand by becoming an assembler of interconnect and electromechanical solutions. We also added OTTO switches to our portfolio and are finding good synergies between connector and switch applications. In addition to switch technology, ECCO is offering cable solutions for ruggedized applications in harsh environments such as underwater, high voltage, high current, or extreme temperature.

So, as customers ask for more value added services we are responding and investing in our quality processes and assembly capabilities.

The general purpose standard logic market will end 2016 declining 21 per cent to $1.54 billion, but will recover over the next several years and grow to $2.2 billion in 2020, according to Semico Research, based in Phoenix, Ariz.

The standard logic market tends to be volatile, alternating between precipitous sales declines and sharp revenue increases as electronics equipment manufacturers build up inventories of the inexpensive chips and then burn them off. For instance, while the standard logic market will fall 21.6 per cent in 2016, in 2015 the market grew 30 per cent compared to 2014 as sales reached $1.9 billion, the researcher said.

“General purpose logic had a good year in 2015 and a lot of inventory was built up,” said Jim Feldhan, Semico president. “This year cell phone shipments are slowing down and PCs are on the decline, so 2016 is a correction year and we are forecasting a 21.6 per cent decline.” PCs and cell phones are major customer segments for standard logic.

However, some logic manufacturers are faring better

than others. Frank Dover, senior director logic and EEPROM for ON Semiconductor, said the chipmaker’s standard logic business is down 3-4 per cent because of price erosion. However, unit shipments are up about 8 per cent driven by wireless applications, he said.

Standard logic includes a variety of products such as OR, AND, NOR, NAND gates, buffers, drivers, transceivers, multiplexers, backplane logic, universal bus products, flip-flop, latch and register chips among others.

Feldhan said the current inventory correction should be over by the end of the year. “Since the inventory will be burned off this year, next year we think the general purpose logic market will grow about 9 per cent to $1.7 billion,” said Feldhan. “There will be positive growth from 2017 to 2020.”

Feldhan noted that standard logic is one of the first products that buyers at electronics manufacturers purchase when a recovery begins. “They are willing to build inventory for it because the last thing they want to do is tell Apple a $600 iPhone can’t ship because the manufacturer didn’t

buy enough of these 8-cent parts,” said Feldhan.

While standard logic sales are volatile year-to-year, so are prices. In 2009 the average price of a standard logic chip was 8.4 cents, said Feldhan. In 2010 the market declined 37 per cent and the average price fell to 4.1 cents. In 2011 there was strong growth and the price bounced back to 7.7 cents. The price climbed to 8.2 cents in 2013 and by 2015 the average price was 11.3 cents, he said.

“Now we’re going through a correction. Manufacturers are burning off inventory, revenue is dropping and the average price today is 8.8 cents,” said Feldhan. “The fluctuation in ASPs is a reflection of demand.”

The good news for standard logic manufacturers is that there will be less price volatility over the next several years. Semico forecasts the average price will be 8.6 cents in 2017, 8.4 cents in 2018 and 9.4 cents in 2019.

Impact of consolidationHe said one reason for less price volatility could be the consolidation in the semiconductor industry including standard logic manufacturers.

“ON Semiconductor and Fairchild Semiconductor are merging and with fewer players out there it may stabilize the ASP a little,” said Feldhan.

There may be another benefit to consolidation.

“In some cases, the equipment is 30 years old and is getting harder to maintain,” said Feldhan. Needed parts for the older equipment can be hard to find. With consolidation, two chipmakers can share spare parts and they may have more leverage with chip equipment manufacturers or their suppliers to get them to produce the parts needed to keep the older equipment operating, he said.

Despite fluctuations in prices and annual sales, the standard logic market will continue to post growth because the low-cost parts are used in many mature electronics applications and are being designed into emerging applications as well. Tom Hackenberg, principal analyst, embedded processors for IHS Markit Technology, said that the standard logic market will post a compound annual growth rate of 4 per cent through 2020. Much of that growth will be driven by a variety of customer segments,

including “factory and building automation including home automation, test and measurement, communications and connectivity infrastructure changes with a redesigning of communications networks targeting managed networks, security, 5G and IoT infrastructure roll out,” said Hackenberg.

He said that mobile PCs are the largest market for standard logic, but the segment is growing slowly. Wearable electronics such as smart watches, smart glasses and fitness devices are smaller customer segments, but are growing at a faster rate and will help drive standard logic growth.

Such emerging segments “tend to need more standard logic to get to market fast with a variety of robust and competing solutions,” said Hackenberg. Those segments use fewer system-on-chip solutions and “tend to leverage new features with more standard logic,” he said.

More integrationHowever, high-volume mature device markets such as PCs are eliminating standard logic components to increase profit and competitiveness by integrating logic functionality onto other chips, he said.

Feldhan said standard logic sales growth will continue despite the trend of embedding more functionality, including logic, in system-on-chip (SoC) solutions. In fact, with SoC, additional logic is often needed. “It may be needed to fix a bug” or to add some functionality that was not included in the SoC solution, Feldhan said.

“No matter what the product is you will always find some standard logic,” said Feldhan. “It is similar to discretes. People thought that discretes were going to go away, but they haven’t. It’s the same thing with standard logic,” he said.

Feldhan noted that standard logic is needed by high-performing products such as Apple’s iPhone and Samsung’s Galaxy and in cost-sensitive Internet of Things (IoT) applications.

IoT applications may use SoC or a standard microcontroller for an application, but the manufacturer may “need to add a couple gates here and there for other functions and they will do it with standard logic because it is cheap,” said Feldhan. He noted while general purpose logic is inexpensive, many of the parts are available in small chip scale packages which IoT applications need. “It doesn’t take

up much space and it is cheap solution for a few logic gates,” said Feldhan.

Dover of ON Semiconductor agrees there is a trend toward smaller leaded packages such as SOT9 or leadless XFN and SC88. “For legacy logic including 14 to 48 pin devices, the trend is toward QFN packages,” he said.

Feldhan said there is also a trend toward standard logic chips that require less power, including many IoT applications. “Companies making standard logic have spent a lot of effort reducing the power, improving the performance and reducing the size of the packaging, which allows them to be used in handheld devices, said Feldhan.

Ask any procurement professional — there is nothing worse than receiving a product discontinuance notice from a vendor or distributor regarding an end-of-life product. Unfortunately, EOL announcements are part of everyday life. Every product has a life cycle and it is only a matter of time before the manufacturer needs to make way for the next-generation part, or as demand falls, it becomes unprofitable to continue producing that component.

Plan for EOLOnce an EOL announcement is made, customers typically have six to 12-months to place a last-time-buy or find an alternative solution for their system. It’s therefore important to plan strategically for an EOL event in order to keep manufacturing lines up and running.

Monitoring the product life cycle is a common concern regarding semiconductor

products yet very few buyers or supply chain managers would expect to receive a product discontinuance notice on an indicator light, fan, switch or relay. So what do you do when you receive a notice on one of these types of components?

For an original equipment manufacturer, particularly small-to-midsize firms, it can be difficult to process and manage end-of-life scenarios, which are often sudden, inconvenient and require immediate attention. EOL of any component or device already designed and approved in a system can cause future challenges including continuity, quality and cost of design.

Source a replacementThe first step for any team is to try and find a drop-in replacement part that matches the original component. In theory, this provides a matching form, fit and function, hopefully eliminating the need for an expensive

End of life notices are a familiar challenge when sourcing semiconductors, but what about less complex products? Orion Fans’ vice president of marketing, David Luna, suggests there may be alternative solutions

Taking the heat out of obsolescence

redesign. Unfortunately, a drop-in replacement part does not guarantee the exact same performance characteristics. There can be significant constraints based on the original design, environmental considerations, application requirements, time-line, availability, costs, inventory levels, lead times and other supply issues for the immediate and long-term life of the product.

Although the semiconductor industry may not be able to escape EOL events, when it comes to other component types, customers can take steps to minimise the impact of product discontinuance. Perhaps the most helpful solution is to partner with an original component manufacturer that has a ‘no obsolescence’ policy. A small number of component manufacturers pledge that no matter what the volume for a particular product, they will not impose an EOL announcement on any customer.

Enlist distributor supportCollaboration across the supply chain is essential to solve procurement, replacement and design challenges. Partnership between OEMs, component manufacturers and component distributors, can lead to short-term supply chain options. Distribution partners may also be in tune with retrofit and replacement solutions.

Orion Fans, for example, guarantees that customers will always have parts available, or access to parts, that have been specified in their product designs. When Orion was contacted recently by an authorised distributor regarding a pending EOL event involving another manufacturer, Orion expanded its DC fan and blower product lines to become a viable long-term source for customers when their current source made these fan and blower products obsolete. Overall, Orion introduced 52 new DC fans and four new DC blowers, with a range of package sizes, speed, airflow and special function configurations.

These new cooling products were added to eliminate the impact product discontinuance would have on the many customers who rely on these parts and, of course, these won’t be the last products that Orion adds to its

portfolio to help customers keep their supply chains running efficiently. There are many pain points in the design and manufacturing process for OEMs, but an end-of-life announcement doesn’t have to be one of them.

Component obsolescence, counterfeit parts and semiconductor industry consolidation are some of the major supply chain challenges that buyers in the defense industry face.

While electronics buyers in other industries face similar challenges, the issues are more acute in the defense industry because defense OEMs frequently must purchase small volumes of older semiconductors and other components for systems that may be used for decades. For instance, the B-52 bomber was originally built in the 1950s and is still in service today, In fact, the Air Force says it plans to keep the plane in service until 2045.

There are many other warplanes, radar systems, vehicles, missile systems and systems for fighting ships defense systems that were designed years ago and are still in service or newer versions of the systems still being built. The challenge for defense industry buyers is to make sure there is a reliable supply base to support such older defense systems still in production or for maintenance and repair of those systems.

Unfortunately, defense systems often have longer life cycles than the components and other parts that are used in the equipment. Chipmakers often cease production of older parts that have diminishing demand in favor of higher margin semiconductors needed for products and systems that have high demand such as smart phones, consumer electronics equipment and computers.

As a result, managing component obsolescence is a front burner issue for many buyers at defense OEMs. They must have obsolescence management plans to demonstrate how they would handle diminishing resources for the systems over time.

Such plans often include strategies such as having multiple sources for parts and using alternate or standard parts whenever possible. Buyers must also monitor end-of-life (EOL) notices very closely, arrange for lifetime buys when necessary, or arrange to have an EOL part built by another manufacturer if possible.

Dealing with obsolescenceKey to managing obsolescence is getting advanced notice of when a semiconductor or

other component manufacturer is about to halt production of a part needed in a defense system.

Buyers at BAE Systems closely monitor EOL notices from suppliers, “but we also go out and query our supply base about which parts the supplier will soon stop producing,” said Roger Ogilvie, vice president and general manager of BAE’s Mission Support business. BAE Systems builds missile launchers, artillery systems, military ordnance, night vision, cockpit controls, surveillance and reconnaissance and other systems for the U.S. military.

Monitoring EOL/PDN notices is important because about 4,000 notices will be sent out in 2016 and each notice could have dozens of parts listed, according to researcher IHS Market Technology. The good news is that the number of EOL parts being issued will be less in 2016 than the number in 2013 when 5,732 were issued, according to IHS Markit Technology.

The number of EOL notices tends to increase when semiconductor suppliers suffer annual sales declines and decreases when chip sales are strong, the researcher said.

Ogilvie says the company learns about “a lot of new EOL notices by picking up the phone and calling suppliers,” rather than waiting for them to send notification. “Some manufacturers are very good about end-of-life notices,” said Ogilvie. “Some provide them to their top customers, but don’t know how to provide the information to the other folks,” in the supply chain, he said.

Component manufacturers “recognize the importance of EOL notices, but don’t have the processes in place to make sure everyone knows about them when they are issued,” said Ogilvie.

Greg Wood, director parts content for IHS Markit Technology in Englewood, Colo., said another challenge for defense industry buyers concerning obsolescence is that defense OEMs must factor in the lifecycle of the system and forecast the expected lifecycle of components that will be used in a system when selecting parts and suppliers.

“A lot of contracts today stipulate that you need to have a good extended lifecycle prediction

A shrinking component supply base, counterfeit parts and working with suppliers to reduce supply chain risks are some of the issues defense OEM buyers must deal with

on the components you are buying,” said Wood. Selecting parts that have good drop-in replacement across manufacturers “is also important.”

He added there is a lot more information these days to make intelligent design selections. Wood said there are component manufacturers that will “guarantee product longevity of the component and will closely work with customers” to manage it.

Dealing with consolidation While managing component obsolescence is a major issue for defense buyers, so is supply base consolidation, especially among semiconductor companies. IHS Markit Technology said from 2014 through 2016 there was “record consolidation” in the chip industry. In 2015 there were more than 20 chip industry acquisitions with a total value of more than $100 billion. Through the third quarter of 2015, there has been more than $55 billion of M&A activity, according to the researcher.

Such consolidation means fewer sources for parts and, in some cases, “you may end up with sole-sourced parts” said Ogilvie.

As a result, it’s important to monitor the semiconductor industry for possible future mergers and acquisitions because when chipmakers merge they often consolidate their product portfolios to eliminate redundant products, which mean there could be dozens of products that have one less source. In addition when semiconductor companies merge, defense industry buyers may have to re-qualify parts purchased from the company that bought the other.

“It depends on the branding,” said Wood. If a part is rebranded with a new logo and a different part number, the chip will likely be rejected at inspection. That means the rebranded part needs to be re-qualified, which is a costly and time-consuming process. However, if the part keeps the same brand and part number of the acquired company, “it’s much less of a challenge,” said Wood.

Defense contractors typically have two or more sources for a part which could be a problem for buyers who purchase parts from two merged suppliers. Noting that ON Semiconductor

and Fairchild announced plans to merge, “if a buyer was getting the same device from ON Semiconductor and Fairchild, that would be challenging,” said Wood. The buyer would have to secure a second source for the chip” if ON and Fairchild were the only two suppliers that the buyer had used for the part, he said.

Counterfeiting: A big problemAnother key issue for defense industry buyers is counterfeiting. “It is a big problem because of the risk, but it’s not a big problem because of the frequency of occurrence,” said Michael Burkett, vice president and distinguished analyst for researcher Gartner “There aren’t a lot of incidents of counterfeiting, but one incident is too many,” he said. “It’s a real challenge.”

Old or obsolete parts that are no longer produced are often targeted by counterfeiters. As a result, buyers sometimes purchase parts from independent distributors or brokers on the open market. While there are many legitimate independent distributors, some are unscrupulous and sell bogus parts.

There’s greater vigilance about counterfeit parts in the defense industry and legislation designed to stop the proliferation of bogus parts in the supply chain has been enacted. Buyers at defense contractors must be able to trace back parts they purchase to the original component manufacturer.

Ogilvie said BAE buys most parts from component manufacturers and not so much from distributors. “It is a requirement now that we need to be able to track the part to its manufacturing source. The best way to do that is the buy from the component manufacturers,” he said. If a part can’t be purchased directly from a manufacturer, BAE will purchase it from authorized distributors. Buying from non-authorized distributors is a last resort.

Wood said counterfeiting is “certainly an ongoing issue and there’s a lot of emphasis on it,” but security of parts is also an issue. “As components themselves become more of an integrated system, there is potential for those integrated systems to be hacked,” said Wood. The chips may have communications capabilities “which could be vulnerable to hacking.

More innovation neededBesides consolidation, obsolescence and supply chain risk, there are other issues for purchasers including getting suppliers to take on more “innovation risk,” said Burkett. “They want their suppliers to not just respond to a drawing or fulfill against an existing contract,” said Burkett. “They’re asking their suppliers to be more innovative, whether it is product related or whether it is process related,” he said.

For instance, buyers may want the supplier to develop a product based on a certain technology that can be used in a defense system or find a new way to manufacture a product to reduce cost.

Defense OEMs also want to gain a deeper visibility into their tier 1 supplier supply chain in order to manage risk and “better predict disruptions in the supply base,” said Burkett.

“They want suppliers to be able to identify any variables that are going to introduce risk and disrupt their supply chains and they want suppliers to put processes in place to reduce

that risk,” he said. OEMs need tier 1 suppliers to take responsibility to identify the “risk variables” and find ways to reduce risk and “ figure out how to get visibility” into the tier 1’s supply chain, Burkett said.

Another issue is cost. “At the end of the day defense OEM buyers want everything for less,” Burkett said. However, it’s not just about price. Increasingly buyers are working with suppliers on identifying the attributes of cost beyond price and eliminate waste and overhead in doing business with suppliers, according to Burkett.

Buyers are asking suppliers, “is there a way that we are engaging you that is adding overhead? For instance, is the way we share demand with you making it hard for you to do business with us?” said Burkett. “Are we creating cost with the way we work with you?”

He said defense OEMs are “trying to get better at “should cost analysis” and analyzing designs, estimating what they think a product should cost and then going to the suppliers” with the

data.

Gartner added defense contractors often do value engineering/analysis to evaluate a design and see where there’s an opportunity to reduce costs.”

To help costs, defense OEMs are looking to reduce “product complexity,” said Burkett. ”There’s a lot of work on collaborative design with suppliers to try to see if there is a way to simplify product and simplify cost,” he said.

“There’s a huge initiative to deal with complexity management and to move towards platforms and more modular designs and have suppliers provide input on how they can help achieve that goal,” said Burkett. The idea is by having a less complex design, fewer components may be needed and cost can be reduced.

Purchasing

“Counterfeiting is a big problem because of the risk, but it’s not a big problem because of the frequency of occurrence,” said Michael Burkett, vice president and distinguished analyst for researcher Gartner
