Pride in Policing

Joe Couto, OACP Director of Government Relations and Communications, lead the second education sessions and presented his thesis entitled “Covered in Blue: Police Culture and LGBT Police Officers in the Province of Ontario”.

Joe discusses the history of LGBT communities in Ontario, his theoretical framework, and his research findings. He conducted a content analysis of interviews with 21 LGBT police officers in the Province of Ontario and found that the research showed most officers believe their status and relationships in their workplaces are more positive today compared to other eras.

He concluded by stating that diversity and inclusion makes for a engaged and high performing culture and that human Rights is not an “option”.
