Igniting transformation in Independent schools
Welcome
Feb. 23 – Feb. 24, 2016
Feb. 23, 2016
Dear OESIS Los Angeles Colleagues:
As we enter our fourth year of service to nearly 500 independent schools on three continents, it is clear that the market is at a point of significant change. The conversations have moved beyond online learning to an understanding of how online opportunities provide a conduit to all kinds of pedagogical, curricular and structural innovation at schools. There is an increasing sense, in the conversations taking place at schools and at the association level, that the independent school “brand” requires redefinition. And in many ways we must see this as something to be embraced with its incredible potential for our students as opposed to the inevitable fear of managing change.
The independent school world is not short of innovators and you will meet many of them here. Our focus now is to give them a platform to enable not just innovation in marginal areas but “school transformation.” You will increasingly see these innovator practitioners leading the symposia with keynotes and their ideas. This new century calls independent schools to a new scale of collaboration, one that is infused with empowerment for all educators (and students) throughout the school ecosystem. We hope that the OESIS professional development initiatives, including our new @school service, can help build real consensus around innovation trajectories for school transformation.
Welcome to our 10th Symposium and our fourth here in Los Angeles.
Kind Regards,

When the nation’s second-largest union high school district decided to equip 6,500 7th graders (and 44,000 over the
next six years) with iPads, they needed to pair those iPads with the best LMS available. A great 1:1 program–where every
student gets their own device–demands an LMS that’s intuitive, user-friendly, with uber-responsive support and a seamless
implementation process. That’s why Sweetwater Union High School District decided to partner with Canvas. It’s 21st Century
education on a 21st Century device with a 21st Century LMS.
IT’S NOT JUST TECHNOLOGY YOU’RE PUTTING IN STUDENTS’ HANDS. IT’S POSSIBILITY.
See how Canvas can help you transform learning and find out more about Sweetwater Union High School’s experience with Canvas at CanvasLMS.com/k-12or by calling 800.203.6755.

Presenter: Megan Palevich, M.Ed. Director of Education, Laurel Springs School
Description: Blended learning models are the new direction of education, where opportunities are created to deliver individualized instruction through the use of technology. Schools gain access to additional courses and the ability to personalize their students’ academic experiences. Students in a blended learning environment benefit from the flexibility of an online course as well as the social and instructional interactions in a face-to-face classroom experience. Through one unique method of blended learning, students have access to subject-specific online teachers as well as on-site classroom teachers. Technology is used to increase student engagement and allow for heightened one-on-one support. In this presentation you will hear experiences from schools utilizing this method of blended learning through their partnership with an accredited online school.

Building Blocks for Global learning: high-leverage and Affordable Ways to Globalize learning (Part one)
Presenters:
Jeff Bradley, Co-Founder of OESIS Groupross Wehner, Founder of World Leadership School
Description: In this one-hour session, Jeff Bradley and ross Wehner will deliver a series of mini-lessons around affordable, high-impact strategies for globalizing a school learning environment — addressed to teachers, administrators and others interested in global education. Participants will first locate their schools on a globalization ‘spectrum’ (early, intermediate, advanced), before diving into a discussion of globalization strategies that include strategic partnerships and/or travel programs; global diploma certificates; teacher training; and school and community diversity initiatives. The session will end with a discussion about how teachers can begin to integrate global ideas and relationships into classroom learning.

Wednesday symposium Keynote Bayview Rooftop Ballroom 11.00 a.m. – 12 noon Priscilla sands
Head of School Marlborough School for Girls in Los Angeles (CA)
Dr. Sands began her independent school career teaching drama and English at her alma mater, The Agnes Irwin School in Philadelphia. She rose quickly through the ranks at that prestigious girls’ school, overseeing the community service program, serving as Director of Admissions and Financial Aid, and finally serving as the Assistant Head of School. In 1996, Dr. Sands became the Head of another highly respected Philadelphia girls’ school, Springside School. In 2011, when Springside merged with the all-boys Chestnut Hill Academy, Dr. Sands was appointed President of the combined institution, Springside Chestnut Hill Academy. At the end of her tenure, a gift of a million dollars was made to endow the Priscilla G. Sands Center for Entrepreneurial Leadership, one of her signature accomplishments. Dr. Sands is a nationally-recognized independent school leader who boasts an impressive list of professional affiliations. She has served as President of the Headmistresses Association of the East, was elected in 2007 to the Headmasters Association, and recently joined the Board of Directors for the Secondary School Admissions Test Board.
