WHO ARE WE?

OUR VISION To build a community of young, emerging artists, thinkers and enthusiasts who are driven to develop the craft of both themselves and others through experimentation, performance and discussion.

OUR MISSION Terra Nemo Theatre Company is an independent platform based in Brisbane. It provides a space for young artists to develop the beginnings of an original work whilst also giving the creatives involved with the project an opportunity to experiment and learn about new production roles. This is accomplished through independent learning and a framework created by Terra Nemo.

DIRECTORS & COLLABORATORS

Due to the myriad of ways performance can be created nowadays, the ‘traditional’ director is not always a

necessity in productions. Terra Nemo Theatre Company acknowledges this but endeavours to create opportunities

for those interested in exploring the craft of direction the opportunity to do so.

Whether it’s working alongside an emerging playwright to bring a text to life, leading a devising process with a

group of other creatives, or working as an assistant director aiding someone else in their vision, the positions

available will change from year to year based on the ideas programmed.

ROLE REQUIREMENTS

Regardless of the capacity in which the candidate is engaged, participating in the direction of the show is an

endeavour which requires a substantial amount of time, both within and outside of the rehearsal room.

A director must be able to communicate on a day-to-day basis with the producers of Terra Nemo Theatre

Company through Google Calendars, Drive and via telephone. They must be autonomous, forward thinking and be

able to lead a team with kindness and respect.

Although the director will report to Terra Nemo’s Company Board, it is their job to delegate and follow up on

production-specific tasks unless otherwise instructed.

The director is the face of one of Terra Nemo Theatre Company’s 2016 productions and so are expected to

attend weekly rehearsals without fail. They are responsible for promoting a positive work environment within the

rehearsal room, holding others within their creative team accountable to the Contracts of Engagement set up by

Terra Nemo Theatre Company.

Estimated hours per week: 15 - 20 hours.

- Four independently led sessions of 2 hours each.

- Weekly rehearsal of 4 hours. (Weeks 1 - 4)

- Three weekly rehearsals of 10 hours (Weeks 5 -8)

- Weekly design meeting of 2 hours.

*An example schedule can be found at the end of this document.

ACTING Actors are the cornerstone of most theatre performances, bringing the work of playwrights, directors and

designers to life through the energy they bring to the stage. Terra Nemo Theatre Company prides itself on

providing actors the chance to develop a diverse skill set across a program of theatre that is varied in style and

content.

Our 2016 programming consists of 4 productions and 2 work-in-developments, which is a testament to Terra

Nemo’s continuing growth. We as a platform are committed to providing an in-depth, holistic learning experience

for those who are involved. So with this in mind the casting of our 2016 shows will focus, wherever possible, on

casting actors in roles for more than one show.

Because of this actors should take into consideration the substantial commitment required to participate in the

platform during 2016. We hope that through this mechanism we are giving artists a chance to apply their

learnings in one show to the next in the same safe, supportive environment.

ROLE REQUIREMENTS

Our aim with those acting in Terra Nemo Theatre Company is to create an environment where the actor can have

a space to collaborate with other creative on the team. They should play an active role in the piece’s development

through contributing their own ideas and thoughts into the process, not only the characters they are portraying.

Actors participating in Terra Nemo’s 2016 Season must be reliable and able to communicate easily with both

their director and designer. This will primarily be done through the use of Google Calendars and Drive on a day-to-

day basis to ensure deadlines are met.

Whilst Terra Nemo prides itself on flexibility, actors are expected to attend at least 80% of weekly rehearsals.

Estimated hours per week: 8 - 14 hours.

- Two independently led sessions of 2 hours each.

- Weekly rehearsal of 4 hours. (Weeks 1 - 4)

- Three weekly rehearsals of total 10 hours (Weeks 5 -8)

*An example schedule can be found at the end of this document.
