Five things you need to know Minnesota welcomes the Indiana State Sycamores to TCF Bank Stadium on Sept. 10, in a meeting of 1-0 teams. Minnesota topped Oregon State 30-23 on Thursday, Sept. 1 at home and Indiana State beat in-state rival Butler at home 41-25. This will be the third meeting between the Gophers and Sycamores. Minnesota leads the all-time series 2-0, posting home wins in 1989 (34-12) and 1993 (27-10). Indiana State plays in the competitive Missouri Valley Conference, which posted a 7-3 record in the first week of play. The conference’s signature win in the first week came when Northern Iowa beat Iowa State 25-20. South Dakota State provided a challenge for No. 13 TCU before falling 59-41 on the road. Minnesota’s last game against a Missouri Valley opponent was in 2013 when it beat Western Illinois 29-12 at home. Minnesota is 1-0 this year after beating Oregon State 30-23 in the 50th game played at TCF Bank Stadium on Sept. 1 (Gophers are 27-23 at TCF Bank Stadium). The victory against Oregon State was Minnesota’s first win against a team from the Pac-12 since Dec. 31, 2003, when the Gophers beat Oregon 31-30 in the Sun Bowl. The win was the first for the Gophers in the regular season against a Pac-12 opponent since they dropped California 32-23 on Sept. 19, 1987 (Gophers previously lost their last five regular season games against Pac-12). The win was also Minnesota’s first against a non-conference power five school (snapped a four-game losing streak) since Sept. 22, 2012, when it beat Syracuse 17-10. When head coach Tracy Claeys hired Jay Johnson to be his new offensive coordinator, he said he wanted more points out of his offense and that the minimum should be 28 point a game. He got the output he was looking for against Oregon State as the Gophers scored 30 in their first game running Johnson’s offense. The 30 points is the most that Minnesota has scored in a non-conference game against a power five opponent since it hung 53 on Iowa State in 1997. In the eight qualifying games since, the most points Minnesota scored was 23 at Syracuse in 2009 in an overtime game. Quarterback Mitch Leidner ran for two scores in Minnesota’s win against Oregon State and now has 25 career rushing touchdowns, which is the most in program histo- ry for a signal-caller (fifth for any player). Rickey Foggie, who played from 1984-87 previously held the mark with 24. Leidner has rushed for 1,205 career yards, but has spanned only 113 yards in collecting his 25 scores. Eleven of his touchdowns have been 1-yard bursts and 18 have been five yards or less. The longest scoring run of his career is 24 yards. The Gophers have senior leaders in Mitch Leidner, Damarius Travis and Jack Lynn, but also only have 13 seniors/grad students on its roster. Those 13 represent the third smallest group of seniors/grad students in major college football (Kentucky 11, Penn State, Baylor 12). Of those 13, only three play on offense side in quarterback Leidner, receiver Drew Wolitarsky and lineman Jonah Pirsig. Those three seniors represent the fewest number in major college football (Troy, Old Dominion, Florida and South Carolina have four). 2016 SCHEDULE DATE/OPPONENT TIME TV RESULT SEPTEMBER (1-0) 1 Oregon State 8 p.m. BTN W, 30-23 10 Indiana State 11 a.m. ESPNews 24 Colorado State TBA OCTOBER 1 at Penn State * TBA 8 Iowa * TBA 15 at Maryland * TBA 22 Rutgers * # 11 a.m. 29 at Illinois * 11 a.m. NOVEMBER 5 Purdue * TBA 12 at Nebraska * 6:30 p.m. BTN 19 Northwestern * TBA 26 at Wisconsin * TBA * Big Ten game # Homecoming All times Central mINNESOtA COACHES Tracy Claeys (SL) Head Coach Jay Sawvel (SL) Defensive Coordinator Jay Johnson (PB) Offensive Coordinator Brian Anderson (SL) Running Backs Keith Jordan (PB) Acting Linebackers Bart Miller (SL) Offensive Line Dan O’Brien (PB) Asst. Indiana State at Minnesota // Sept. 10, 2016ABOUt tHE SyCAmORESIndiana State is 1-0 after opening the season last Saturday with a 41-25home win against Butler. The Sycamores are coached by Mike Sanford. He is in his fourth season and holds a 14-23 record. Sanford is an expe-rienced coach at both the NFL and collegiate level. Sanford was at UtahState in 2012 and coached the running backs and tight ends. He wasalso the head coach at UNLV from 2005-09.

The Sycamores are coming off a 5-6 season that was decimated byinjuries and close losses. They missed the FCS playoffs but battled theeventual national champions North Dakota State in a 28-14 loss andtook a 27-24 defeat at No. 3 Illinois State.

Against Butler, defensive back Tsali Lough recovered a fumble and returned it 100 yards for a touchdown. He record-ed an interception on the next offensive play and led the defense with eight tackles, a sack, a forced fumble, a fumblerecovery and an interception.

After a fall camp quarterback battle the Sycamores named sophomore Isaac Harker their starter. He was 21-for-35with 315 yards and two touchdowns against Butler. His favorite target was NFL prospect Robert Tonyan Jr. whograbbed seven catches for 92 yards.

Tonyan led ISU in receiving in 2015 with 601 yards on 40 catches and six touchdowns. He finished the year seventh inthe conference in yards and ninth in receptions. He has 10 receiving touchdowns in his career and is in reach of theSycamores all-time receiving touchdown record (15).

DRAFtEDTwo former Gophers – Eric Murray and De’Vondre Campbell – heard their name called in the 2016 NFL Draft. Bothplayers were selected in the fourth round, with Murray going to the Kansas City Chiefs and Campbell going to theAtlanta Falcons.

Their selection is another sign of progress at Minnesota, as the Gophers have now had eight players drafted in the lastthree years. In addition to Murray and Campbell, Minnesota had four players selected in 2015 (Maxx Williams, DamienWilson, David Cobb and Cedric Thompson) and two players taken in 2014 (Ra’Shede Hageman and Brock Vereen). Incontrast, Minnesota did not have a player drafted in 2011, 2012 or 2013.

The eight Gophers taken in the last three years is the most since Minnesota also had eight players drafted from 2001-03. Minnesota had four players selected in 2001 (Willie Middlebrooks, Karon Riley, Ben Hamilton and Adam Haayer),three in 2002 (Ron Johnson, Matt Anderle and Greg White) and one in 2003 (Michael Lehan). Even more impressive isthat the eight most recent Gophers drafted were all taken in the top 150 picks. In contrast, four of the eight players from2001-03 were taken in the first 150 picks.

Minnesota’s current eight-consecutive top 150 picks is the longest stretch in program history since the pre-scouting era1944 draft, when the Gophers had 10 players (Paul Mitchell, Rudy Sikich, Bill Garnaas, Bob Graiziger, Vic Kulbitski,Herm Frickey, Herb Hein, John Perko, John Bicaninch and Bill Aldworth) selected in the first 105 picks. Minnesota hadseven players taken in the first 150 picks in the 1950 draft and seven combined players taken in the 1960-62 drafts.

The Senior Bowl is usually a good indicator of who has potential to be drafted and the bowl recenlty announced thatfive Gopher seniors - Mitch Leidner, Jack Lynn, Jalen Myrick, Jonah Pirsig and Damarius Travis - are on its watch list.

QUARtERBACKSu Mitch Leidner has played in 36 career games (21-15 record) and started 30 (has started 23 straight games and has a

17-13 record as a starter). He has rushed for 1,205 career yards and 25 career touchdowns (most in school historyfor a quarterback) and has passed for 5,248 yards (sixth most inschool history) and 28 touchdowns (eighth most in school history). He ranks fifth all-time in school history in completion percentage(56.1), sixth in completions (420) and sixth in attempts (748). Leidneris one of only two Minnesota quarterbacks to pass and rush for 20career touchdowns (Rickey Foggie rushed for 24 and passed for 33from 1984-87). Leidner also passed Foggie in career passing yardsas well against Oregon State (Foggie had 5,162 in his career).

u The Lakeville, Minn., native has written his name in the recordbooks. Leidner set class records for completions (242) andpassing yards (2,701) last season as a redshirt junior. InMinnesota’s last two bowl games - the Quick Lane Bowl againstCentral Michigan and the Citrus Bowl against Missouri - Leidnertied a school record by completing 14 straight passes.

u Leidner flourished last season against some of the best defens-es in the nation. He passed for at least 250 yards in fourstraight games (301 vs. Nebraska, 317 vs. Michigan, 281 atOhio State and 259 at Iowa) to tie the school record set by MikeHohensee who passed for at least 250 yards from Sept. 11,1982 to Oct. 2, 1982 (322 yards vs. Ohio, 254 at Purdue, 281vs. Washington State and 344 vs. Illinois). During the stretch,Leidner faced the No. 1 defense in the nation in Michigan, No.12 defense in Iowa and No. 13 defense in Ohio State. Leidneralso passed for 264 yards against Ohio, and has now passedfor at least 250 yards five times in his last 11 games (includesthis year against Oregon State). Last season he became thefirst Gopher quarterback to have five 250-yard games in a sea-son since Adam Weber had five in 2007. Gopher quarterbackshad five 250-yard passing games combined from Oct. 23, 2010to Sept. 19, 2015 (59 games).

u Leidner was the MVP of the Quick Lane Bowl on Dec. 28, 2015and then underwent successful foot surgery on Dec. 30, 2015.He missed all of spring practice, but took mental reps standingbehind the offense and absorbed the new system put in placeby offensive coordinator Jay Johnson. He is healthy now - forthe first time since the start of the 2014 season - and startedthe season against Oregon State with 206 yards (76 rushingand 130 passing) of total offense and two rushing touchdowns.Leidner has also trimmed down by 20 pounds and is now play-ing at 230 pounds.

u Backing up Leidner is Conor Rhoda, who is a redshirt junior.Rhoda has played in two career games, both of which cameduring his 2014 freshman season. He did not see game actionlast season, but was named Minnesota’s Offensive Work TeamPlayer of the Year.

u Demry Croft is a sophomore after seeing action in three gameslast year. Croft, who is 6-5 and 200 pounds, could redshirt thisseason. The Rockford, Ill., native completed 7-of-17 passes for34 yards and rushed nine times for 38 yards a year ago.

u Seth Green, who enrolled in January, is a highly touted recruitwho attended high school in Minnesota and Texas. He spenthis senior season at Allen High School in Allen, Texas, andhelped lead the Eagles to a 14-1 record and a berth in the statechampionship. Green completed 81 passes for 1,481 yards and19 touchdowns and rushed 99 times for 865 yards and 10scores. Prior to moving to Texas, Green played three years atEast Ridge High School in Woodbury, Minn. Green led theRaptors to a 9-2 record as a junior and to the state quarterfinalsand completed 142 passes for 1,850 yards and 20 touchdowns. He also rushed 107 times for 551 yards and five scores.

RECEIVERSu The Gophers entered this season without

record-setting receiver KJ Maye, who graduatedand is pursuing an NFL career. Maye set a pro-gram record for receptions by a senior with 73and also led the team in receiving yards (773),touchdowns (5) and average yards per game(59.5). The Gophers must replace their mostproductive receiver since Eric Decker. There area number of candidates who are ready to stepup and fill those shoes.

u First among them is Drew Wolitarsky. Thesenior finished second on the team last year incatches (39), yards (524) and touchdowns (3).He averaged 13.4 yards per catch, which wasthe best mark on the team for anyone who hadmore than five receptions. Against OregonState, he led the team with four catches for 53yards. Eric Carter and Rashad Still could havebig years as well, but need to get healthy first.Carter, who missed the Oregon State game withan injury, had a breakout year in 2015 when hecaught 23 passes for 255 yards and one touch-down. Rashad Still, who left the Oregon Stategame with an injury, proved he was capable ofmaking an impact as well. Still has played foot-ball for only three years, but hauled in 18 ballsfor 194 yards and three scores last season.

u A player who emerged against Oregon Statewas true freshman Tyler Johnson. TheMinneapolis native had three catches for 31yards and all three resulted in a first down.

tIGHt ENDSu Minnesota has passed for 68 touchdowns since

2011 and 29 of those passes (42.6%) havelanded in the reliable hands of a tight end. Themost reliable of those hands last year belongedto Academic All-America second team memberBrandon Lingen. The Wayzata, Minn., nativemissed the Oregon State game with an injury, but in 12 games last year he 33 passes for 428yards and three touchdowns. Lingen had two100-yard receiving games (111 vs Michigan and106 at Iowa) to become the first Gopher tightend to have two 100-yard games in the sameseason since at least 1950. His 111 yards ver-sus Michigan were the fourth-most by a Gophertight end since 1950.

u Nate Wozniak, who at 6-10 is the tallest skillplayer in college football, stepped in for Lingenagainst Oregon State and hauled in three ballsfor 33 yards. Last year, Wozniak snagged eightpasses for 75 yards in 12 games. His most pro-ductive game last year was against Kent Statewhen he caught three passes for 40 yards.

u Nick Hart played in eight games in 2015 andcaught nine balls for 84 yards. He wasn’t target-ed often, but when he was it was during bigmoments. His first career catch was a 14-yardgain at Colorado State and came on the team’stouchdown-scoring drive late in the fourth quar-ter. He also caught two passes on the game-winning drive in the fourth quarter against Ohio.

Indiana State at Minnesota // Sept. 10, 2016RUNNING BACKSu The names are legendary. When you hear Darrell

Thompson, Laurence Maroney or Marion Barber III,you instantly think of greatness. You think of records, broken tackles, long touchdown runs and hard-earnedyards. Thompson, Maroney and Barber III hold the topthree sports in freshman rushing yards at Minnesotaand ended their careers ranked first (Thompson4,654), second (Maroney 3,933) and fourth (Barber III3,276) in rushing yards, respectively.

u Two new names – Shannon Brooks and RodneySmith – were written into the history books last sea-son. Brooks rushed 119 times for 709 yards, whichwas the fourth-most ever by a Gopher freshman.Smith rushed 157 times for 670 yards, which rankssixth all-time for a Minnesota freshman.

u Brooks missed the Oregon State game with an injury, but Smith proved more than capable of carrying theload for the Gophers. He rushed 25 times (secondhighest of his career) for a career high 125 yards andtwo touchdowns (scored only two TDs in 2015).Smith’s 125 yards were the most by a Gopher in thefirst game of the season since Duane Bennett ran for187 yards on 30 carries against Middle TennesseeState in 2010. His 125 yards were the most by aGopher against a non-conference, power five oppo-nent in the regular season since Chris Darkins ran for205 yards on 33 carries at Syracuse in 1995.

u Smith, who rushed for two scores last season, madehis collegiate debut against TCU and carried the ball16 times for 88 yards and one score. He did not havea negative rush against TCU, as he averaged 5.5yards-per-carry. His 88 yards against were the mostby a Gopher freshman running back making his colle-giate debut since Thomas Hamner ran for 158 yardson 22 carries in 1996 at Northeast Louisiana (AmirPinnix also rushed for 88 yards on 17 carries as afreshman in his collegiate debut against Toledo in2004). Smith would rush for 108 yards at ColoradoState and churned out 74 yards on 12 carries (6.2average) against Michigan’s No. 1-ranked defense.

u Brooks rushed for seven touchdowns last season, which covered 75, 71, 40, 38, five and three yards(twice). He became the first Gopher since Maroney in2005 to have four touchdown runs longer than 35yards in one season. He also averaged 6.0 yards percarry, which is the 11th-best mark in school historyand the third-best ever for a freshman behindMaroney (6.92 on 162 carries in 2003) and Barber III(6.28 on 118 carries in 2001). Brooks rumbled for 176yards at Purdue and gained 174 yards against Illinois. Those marks rank eighth and 10th in single-gamerushing records for a Minnesota freshman. Brooksalso completed one pass last year, which was a 42-yard touchdown to Drew Wolitarsky at Iowa.

u Brooks and Smith are threats in the passing game aswell. Brooks caught 17 passes for 167 yards last sea-son, while Smith made 16 receptions for 124 yards.

u Kobe McCrary came to Minnesota after spending twoseasons at Butler Community College where hehelped lead the Grizzlies to a 9-2 record and a No. 5ranking as a sophomore. He rushed 225 times for1,190 yards and led the nation with 22 touchdowns.

His longest rush was 70 yards and he averaged 108.2yards rushing per game en route to being namedSecond Team All-Jayhawk Conference. He made hisMinnesota debut against Oregon State, rushing twicefor four yards.

OFFENSIVE LINEu It all begins up front. It’s an old football axiom that the

success of the team – specifically the offense – isdependent upon the success of the offensive line. This year, there were several new beginnings on theMinnesota offensive line as Minnesota hosted OregonState last Thursday. The first was that a new coachwas in charge in Bart Miller. Head coach Tracy Claeyshired Miller from Florida Atlantic to lead his offensiveline on Dec. 30, 2015. Miller, who is from Omaha,Neb., has also served as offensive line coach at NewMexico State and Wisconsin. Miller’s line didn’t allowa sack against Oregon State and helped Minnesotascore four rushing touchdowns (first time since 2014).

u Since Miller has arrived on campus he has stressedboth physical and mental toughness. His group alladded weight in the offseason as they underwent tax-ing workouts. Miller has 17 offensive lineman on theroster, but only five of those – Jonah Pirsig, TylerMoore, Connor Mayes, Matt Leidner and ChadFahning – saw game action before this year. Of thosefive only Pirsig, Moore and Mayes had started.

u Pirsig is the most tenured of the group and he was theonly offensive lineman to start all 13 games last sea-son. The fifth-year senior from Blue Earth, Minn., hasplayed in 33 games and has started 21 (19 consecu-tive heading into Indiana State). Last year, he protect-ed for a Minnesota offense that passed for 2,793yards (most since 2008) and 15 touchdowns (mostsince 2010). In addition, he blocked for an offense in2014 that rushed for 2,801 yards (most since 2005)and 32 touchdowns (most since 2005) and alsohelped pave the way for David Cobb to set a single-season rushing record with 1,626 yards.

u Moore started at center against Oregon State afterstarting the final eight games of the 2015 season as atrue freshman. The offense excelled when he wasasserted into the lineup. In his first start, the Gophersrushed for 326 yards at Purdue (most in a Big Tengame since 2005) and in his next four starts,Minnesota tied a school record as it passed for atleast 250 yards in each game.

u Mayes has played in 22 career games after startingagainst Oregon State. He saw action in all 13 gameslast year and started the first nine of the season atguard before he was spelled by rotating fifth-yearseniors Joe Bjorklund and Jon Christenson.

u Two new additions to the Minnesota offensive line thisyear are junior college transfers Vincent Calhoun andGarrison Wright and both contributed right away.

u Calhoun started against Oregon State after spendingtwo seasons at Southwest Mississippi CommunityCollege where he earned NJCAA Second Team All-America honors as a sophomore. He helped pave theway for the Bears to pass for 1,572 yards and 12touchdowns and rush for 1,312 yards and 11 scores innine games. He allowed only two sacks while playingtackle all season and was named to the NJCAA's All-

Region team, selected MACJC First Team All-Southand named the South's Most Valuable Lineman.

u Wright started against Oregon State after spendingthree seasons at Butler Community College (includeda redshirt year). He helped lead the Grizzlies to a 9-2record and a No. 5 ranking as a sophomore and wasnamed First Team All-Jayhawk Conference as heblocked for an offense that rushed for 2,087 yards and36 score and passed for 2,160 yards and 16 scores.

DEFENSIVE LINEu Stopping the run is always a goal of a good defense.

And to do that you need a capable defensive line,sure-tackling linebackers and a secondary who isgood at run support. Last year, Minnesota’s oppo-nents averaged 166.4 rushing yards per game, whichwas the second lowest amount in the Tracy Claeysdefensive coordinator-head coach era (Gophersallowed only 158.2 rushing yards per game in 2013).Minnesota did this despite significant injuries to itdefensive line. The Gophers yielded only 89 rushingyards and zero rushing touchdowns to Oregon State.

u Minnesota ended last season with 22 sacks, butnotched four against Oregon State. Freshman endTai’yon Devers led the way with two, while tacklesSteven Richardson (now has 4.5 for his career) andAndrew Stelter (first of his career) each had one.

u Freshman Tai’yon Devers burst onto the sceneagainst Oregon State with two sacks and two forcedfumbles (both fumbles led to Minnesota touchdowns).Devers first sack came on his first collegiate play. Allof last season the most sacks any Gopher had all sea-son was four (De’Vondre Campbell) and the mostforced fumbles any player had was three (EricMurray). Devers played one year of high school foot-ball – his senior season – before playing one seasonat Georgia Prep Sports Academy. In high school, hetotaled 36 tackles, 12 sacks, forced two fumbles, recovered one fumble, blocked a punt and a field goal.

u The Gophers have traditionally rotated their defensiveline and because of that and the injuries last season,Minnesota has six defensive tackles who have colle-giate game experience in Scott Ekpe, StevenRichardson, Andrew Stelter, Yoshoub Timms, GaryMoore and Merrick Jackson (Jackson played last sea-son at Iowa Western).

u The most tenured of the group is Scott Ekpe andYoshoub Timms, who are both five year seniors. ScottEkpe started against Oregon State after notched twotackles and one tackle for loss. Ekpe starting fivegames last season and played in seven. He made 15tackles, which included 2.0 tackles-for-loss and recov-ered one fumble in overtime at Colorado State. Healso missed five straight Big Ten games with an injury.

u Timms did not see any action in the first five gameslast year, but was thrust into significant playing timeas the season progressed. The Florida native startedat tackle against Ohio State, Iowa, Wisconsin andCentral Michigan and played in eight games. Heimpressed with 14 tackles, 2.5 tackles-for-loss andone sack. He did not play against Oregon State.

u Steven Richardson is a powerhouse of a tackle andstarted against Oregon State after missing three

Indiana State at Minnesota // Sept. 10, 2016games last season because of injury. The compactand explosive Richardson made three tackles againstOregon State, had one sack and recovered one fum-ble. In 10 games last year, he made 26 tackles andwas second on the team with 8.0 tackles-for-loss and3.5 sacks. Richardson also batted down two passes, forced one fumble and recovered one fumble as hewas named All-Big Ten Honorable Mention.

u Because of injuries, Stelter was forced to play bothend and tackle last season. Stelter, who has gained50 pounds since arriving at the U, started at tackkleagainst Oregon State and made two tackles, whichincluded his first career sack. Last year, he played in13 games and made 26 tackles.

u Minnesota has Gary Moore back this year as well.Moore played in four games and made two tackles in2014 as a freshman and then redshirted last year. Heshared Defensive Work Team Player of the Year hon-ors with Winston DeLattiboudere. Moore did not playagainst Oregon State.

u Jackson spent three seasons at Iowa Western (was ateammate of Gopher linebacker Cody Poock), whichincluded a redshirt season. He was named NJCAAFirst Team All-American after recording 70 tacklesand 7.5 sacks as a sophomore and also had 19 tack-les-for-loss, forced one fumble and broke up onepass. He played against Oregon State, but did notrecord any statistics.

u Hendrick Ekpe, Scott’s younger brother, is back onthe edge for Minnesota. He started against OregonState and made three tackles, including one tackle forloss. Last year, he finished the season with 11 tack-les, 2.5 sacks, two pass breakups and recovered onefumble.

u Like Stelter, Elmore played both defensive end andtackle last season because of injuries. He started atend against Oregon State and made one tackle. Lastyear, Elmore played in 12 games and made 12 tack-les, 3.5 tackles-for-loss, one sack and also broke uptwo passes.

LINEBACKERSu Minnesota has 14 linebackers on its roster, which

includes nine who played the position last season. The Gophers lost De’Vondre Campbell to the AtlantaFalcons, but the linebacker corps is one of the deep-est positions on the team. It will be anchored by seniorcaptain Jack Lynn and junior Cody Poock. Lynn tiedfor the team lead with seven tackles against OregonState. He played in 13 games last year and led theGophers with 11.0 tackles-for-loss and recorded 76tackle. He added 1.5 sacks, broke up two passes, forced one fumble and recovered one fumble as hewas named All-Big Ten Honorable Mention.

u Poock made two tackles against Oregon State. Lastyear, he started eight games and played in 12. He fin-ished the season with 99 tackles, which was secondon the team, as he received Minnesota’s Linebackerof the Year award. Poock notched 5.5 tackles-for-lossand also forced one fumble. He too was named All-Big Ten Honorable Mention.

u Nick Rallis is entering his fifth and final season as aGopher in 2016. He made five tackles against Oregon

State before leaving the game with an injury. Rallis isexpected to miss the Indiana State game. The Edina,Minn., native played in all 13 games last season. Hemade 18 tackles, which included 3.0 tackles-for-loss.Rallis came on strong at the end of the season whenhe saw extended playing time. He made nine tackles– including 2.5 tackles-for-loss – versus Wisconsinand had four tackles versus Central Michigan.

u Jonathan Celestin started the fourth game of hiscareer against Oregon State and led the Gophers withseven tackles. Celestin also broke up one pass. Thehard-hitting Celestin made 43 tackles and 4.0 tackles-for-loss last year. He also forced one fumble andbroke up one pass. He ended the season with a team-high six tackles against Central Michigan.

u Julian Huff is a versatile backer who had six tacklesagainst Oregon State. Last year, he played in 13games and started the first game of the year againstTCU. Huff, who was used primarily as a late-downrush specialist, made 22 tackles last season thatincluded 2.5 sacks. He also broke up one pass andrecovered one fumble.

DEFENSIVE BACKSu From the outside, i t would appear that one of

Minnesota’s most glaring needs entering this seasonwould be figuring out who is going to play in the sec-ondary. After all, the Gophers lost three standouts insafety Antonio Johnson and corners Briean Boddy-Calhoun (Cleveland Browns) and Eric Murray (KansasCity Chiefs). Defensive coordinator Jay Sawvel isn’tworried though. Minnesota may have lost threestarters, but still returns experience to the defensivebackfield that has not allowed a 300-yards passing in26 games.

u Senior Damarius Travis, who started against TCU lastyear, but then missed the rest of the season with aninjury is back after being granted a medical hardshipwaiver. Travis played in his 41st career game againstOregon State and made four tackles and broke upone pass. For his career he has made 111 tackles, which includes 63 solo stops and 5.0 tackles-for-loss.Travis also has 10 career pass breakups, two inter-ceptions and has forced and recovered one fumble. He is one of Minnesota’s captains this season.

u Adekunle Ayinde filled in admirably for Travis at safetylast season when he was injured. The Blaine, Minn.,native started alongside Travis against Oregon Stateand made five tackles. Last year, he started 11 gamesand played in all 13 and made 43 tackles. He added2.5 tackles-for-loss and received the team’s GaryTinsley Underdog Award, which is presented to thestudent-athlete who best personifies the late Tinsley’sunderdog spirit.

u Jalen Myrick proved to be one of the best lockdowncorners in the Big Ten last season as he saw extend-ed action. The speedster from Savannah, Ga., hasplayed in 35 career games. He had five solo tacklesagainst Oregon State, one tackle for loss and onepass breakup. Last year, he had three interceptionsand returned one for a touchdown at Purdue. It washis second career pick-six.

u Duke McGhee has played in 25 career games andbroke up one pass and made four tackles against

Oregon State. He excelled in the defensive backfieldlast season when he saw significant playing time.McGhee, who is also a standout on special teams, ended 2015 with 41 tackles in 13 games, but recorded12 tackles against both Ill inois and Wisconsin.McGhee made his first career start in the Quick LaneBowl against Central Michigan.

u KiAnte Hardin and Antonio Shenault were true fresh-man last season who saw action with the Minnesotadefense. Hardin got the starting nod against OreginState and broke up two passes and made six tackles.Shenault made one tackle against the Beavers.

SPECIALIStSu It is often said that special teams is the difference

between winning and losing games. For the past cou-ple of years, Minnesota has had strong special teamsplay highlighted by punter Peter Mortell and kickerRyan Santoso. Mortell, who statistically was the bestpunter in Minnesota history with an average of 44.0yards, has graduated and is pursuing an NFL career.Minnesota replaced him by moving Santoso from kick-er to punter. Santoso was spectacular against OregonState. He punted six times for 247 yards and aver-aged 41.2 yards. He placed four punts inside the 20and two inside the 11-yard line. He also connected ona 54-yard punt to flip the field. Oregon State returnedthree punts for four yards against Minnesota.

u With Santoso punting, Minnesota named EmmitCarpenter its starting kicker. Carpenter was tested onthe first field goal of his career, as it came with twoseconds left in the first half against Oregon State.Carpenter banked the 45-yard attempt in off theupright and was also perfect on three point-afterattempts.

u Punters and kickers are not able to do their job with-out an effective long snapper and Minnesota has agood one in Payton Jordahl. He has been successfulon all 136 of his career snap attempts (80 punt, 34PAT and 22 FG).

REtURNERSu Speed kills. Especially in the return game. The

Gophers have plenty of speed at the punt and kickreturn positions, most notably in Jalen Myrick andKiAnte Hardin.

u Myrick has returned 31 kickoffs in his career and isaveraging 25.7 yards per return, which places himsecond all-time in team history (minimum 20) behindJakari Wallace who averaged 27.0 yards from 2003-05. Myrick opened the Oregon State game with a 56-yard kickoff return. He also returned a kickoff 100yards for a touchdown to secure a home win againstNorthwestern in 2014.

u Hardin is the only Gopher on the roster who returneda punt last season. He assumed the duties midwaythrough the season as a true freshman and ended theyear with nine punt returns for 61 yards. He alsoreturned 11 kickoffs for 267 yards last season. Hislongest kickoff return was 60 yards and his average of24.3 yards per return led the team. All 11 of his kickreturns came in conference play and his average wasfourth-best in the Big Ten for anyone who returned 10or more kicks. Minnesota did not return any puntsagainst Oregon State.

Indiana State at Minnesota // Sept. 10, 2016

tracy claeys w HEAD COACH w SECOND SEASON Tracy Claeys was named Minnesota's Head Coach on Nov. 11, 2015. He succeeded his

good friend Jerry Kill, who resigned his position on Oct. 28, 2015, due to health reasons. Claeys served on Kill’s staff for 21 years and was named Interim Head Coach following

Kill’s resignation. In that capacity, Claeys led the Gophers against No. 15 Michigan and No. 1Ohio State. Claeys coached his first game without the Interim title at No. 8 Iowa on Nov. 14,2015, and won his first game by a score of 32-23 against Illinois on Nov. 21, 2015. He endedthe season by leading Minnesota to a 21-14 win in the Quick Lane Bowl, snapping a seven-game bowl losing streak.

The Clay Center, Kan., native initially joined the Minnesota staff on Dec. 10, 2010, whenKill hired him as defensive coordinator. Claeys was Minnesota’s Acting Head Coach in 2013 for seven games and ledthe Gophers to a 4-3 mark, which included consecutive wins against Northwestern, Nebraska, Indiana and Penn State. It was the first time since 1973 that Minnesota won four straight conference games in the same season.

Claeys was nominated for the Frank Broyles Award (top college assistant coach) in 2013 and 2014 and was pro-moted to Associate Head Coach prior to the 2014 season.

As defensive coordinator at Minnesota, Claeys transformed the Gopher defense into one of the best in the Big Ten. Minnesota allowed 380 points in 2011 and 321 points in 2012. In 2013, its third season under Claeys’ leadership,

the Gopher defense allowed only 289 points. It marked the first time that Minnesota allowed fewer than 300 points in afull season since 2004.

In 2013, Minnesota ranked fourth in the Big Ten and 25th in the nation by allowing only 22.2 points per game. TheGophers were at their best when it mattered most. The defense led the Big Ten and finished 15th nationally in red zonedefense. Minnesota opponents scored on just 74 percent of their trips inside the 20.

In 2014, Minnesota allowed 314 points (24.2 points per game) to rank sixth in the Big Ten and tied for 33rd national-ly. The defense's 15 fumble recoveries and 15 interceptions helped Minnesota to a plus-10 turnover margin (second inthe Big Ten and 15th in the nation).

The Gophers have held 27 of their last 35 opponents below their scoring average. In 18 of those games, Minnesotaheld it opposition to eight or more points below their season average and in seven games the Gophers held this oppo-nents to 14 or more points below their season average.

Claeys has coached four First Team All-Big Ten defensive selections - Briean Boddy-Calhoun (2014), DamienWilson (2014), Ra'Shede Hageman (2013) and Brock Vereen (2013) - at Minnesota in five years. In contrast, Minnesotahad five First Team All-Big Ten defensive selections from 2000-10.

Claeys-coached players are also catching the attention of NFL teams at an increasing rate. Minnesota has had sixdefensive players taken in the NFL Draft in the last three years in Eric Murray (2016, Kansas City Chiefs), De'VondreCampbell (2016, Atlanta Falcons), Damien Wilson (2015, Dallas Cowboys), Cedric Thompson (2015, Miami Dolphins),Ra'Shede Hageman (2014, Atlanta Falcons) and Brock Vereen (2014, Chicago Bears). Minnesota had six total defen-sive players drafted from 2000-13.

Claeys started his coaching career at Santa Fe Trail High School in 1994. He joined Kill in 1995 at Saginaw ValleyState, where he coached the defensive line. Claeys became Kill's defensive coordinator at Emporia State in 1999. Heremained in that capacity when Kill took over at Southern Illinois in 2001 and Northern Illinois in 2008.

In 2008, his first season at Northern Illinois, Claeys and the defensive staff engineered one of the biggest turn-arounds in the country, as the Huskies led the MAC in pass defense, scoring defense and total defense. The Huskiesfinished in the top 20 nationally in three categories – fifth in pass defense, 14th in scoring defense and 17th in totaldefense.

Claeys' defense topped the MAC and ranked 30th in the country in total defense the following year. The Huskieswere also among the top 30 FBS teams in the country in scoring defense that season.

In 2010, Claeys led a Northern Illinois defensive unit that was ranked No. 14 in the nation and No. 1 in the Mid-American Conference in scoring defense, allowing an average of just 19 points per game. The Huskies were also No.32 in the nation in pass efficiency defense, No. 27 in total defense and No. 27 in rushing defense in Claeys' final sea-son.

In his last five years at Southern Illinois, Claeys’ defenses allowed an average of 18.5 points while holding oppo-nents to 14 points or less 21 times, which included five shutouts. In 2007, Southern Illinois reached the FCS nationalsemifinal and its defense ranked as the 10th-best FCS scoring defense in the country and the second-best scoringdefense at SIU since 1983. They also intercepted 21 passes to rank fourth in the nation.

In 2004, Southern Illinois led the country in scoring defense, allowing just 13.2 points per game. The Salukis gaveup only 101.7 yards per game on the ground while snagging 17 interceptions.

Claeys' pre-Minnesota resume also includes coaching several standout defensive players, most recently NorthernIllinois’ Larry English, the first-round draft choice of the NFL's San Diego Chargers in 2009. Claeys also coached SeattleSeahawks' 1999 first-round draft choice Lamar King at Saginaw Valley State and tutored linebacker Bart Scott atSouthern Illinois and defensive end Paul Spicer at Saginaw Valley St.

Claeys, who attended both Kansas and Kansas State, graduated with a degree in Mathematics Education in 1994from Kansas State. He is one of a handful of current Division I FBS head coaches who did not play collegiate football.

Indiana State at Minnesota // Sept. 10, 2016year of working in football, previously handledMinnesota’ special teams quality control. Prior toMinnesota, he was the defensive coordinator at FortScott Community College. He has also coached atNorthern Michigan, NE Missouri State, SouthwestBaptist and spent 17 seasons coaching high school.

FAmILIAR VOICESu Although there are a few new names on the coaching

staff there are still plenty of members of the groupwho have worked together for a long time. CoachClaeys and strength coach Eric Klein have been onthe same staff for 22 years now. Rob Reeves (h-backs and tight ends) has worked with Claeys for 21years and Jay Sawvel (defensive coordinator), PatPoore (running backs) and Brian Anderson (receivers)are in their 16th year. Jeff Phelps (defensive line) andMike Sherels (linebackers) are in their ninth and thirdyears, respectively, working with Claeys.

ImmEDIAtE ImPACtu Minnesota has had recent success with recruiting

junior colleges. Damien Wilson (Dallas Cowboys) andDe’Vondre Campbell (Atlanta Falcons) are each in theNFL and current Gopher Coody Poock is coming off abreakout season. This year should be no exception asjunior college additions are expected to come in andcontribute. Offensive lineman Vincent Calhoun andGarrison Wright started against Oregon State, whileDonnell Greene played on special teams. Runningback Kobe McCrary got a few carries and MerrickJackson saw action as well.

ABOUt LASt yEAR u Minnesota was 6-7 last season, but faced one of the

most daunting schedules in the nation. Of theGophers seven defeats, six of them came to teamsthat won at least 10 games in Ohio State,Northwestern, Michigan, Iowa, Wisconsin and TCU.The Gophers other loss was to Nebraska.

u In 2015, the Gophers faced (AP rankings at time ofthe game) No. 1 Ohio State, No. 2 TCU, No. 8 Iowa,No. 15 Michigan and No. 16 Northwestern. Minnesotaalso played Wisconsin, which ended the season No.21. The Gophers faced three consecutive top-15teams in Michigan, Ohio State and Iowa. Last year,Baylor was the only other school in the regular seasonto play three straight top-15 teams, as it played No. 12Oklahoma, No. 4 Oklahoma State and No. 15 TCU.

u Minnesota was the only Big Ten team to play (rank-ings at time of game) No. 1 Ohio State, No. 8 Iowa,No. 15 Michigan, No. 16 Northwestern and Wisconsinlast season. Those teams combined to be 54-12.

u Nine of Minnesota’s 12 regular season opponentsplayed in a bowl game last season. Those nine oppo-nents played in the following bowls: Rose Bowl (Iowa),Fiesta Bowl (Ohio State), Outback Bowl(Northwestern), Citrus Bowl (Michigan), Alamo Bowl(TCU), Holiday Bowl (Wisconsin), Foster Farms Bowl(Nebraska), Camellia Bowl (Ohio) and Arizona Bowl(Colorado State).

QUICK StRIKESu Minnesota recorded four sacks against Oregon State

and did not give up a sack. Minnesota last had foursacks in a game in 2015 at Ohio State.

COORDINAtING EFFORtSu When Tracy Claeys was named head coach it meant

he had to hire a replacement for himself at the defen-sive coordinator position. He didn’t have to look toofar, just down the hallway actually. Claeys promoteddefensive backs coach Jay Sawvel to defensive coor-dinator. Sawvel, who has coached with Claeys since2001 at Southern Illinois, now leads the Gopherdefense after solidifying a strong group in the sec-ondary. In 2015, Sawvel coached corners Eric Murrayand Briean Boddy-Calhoun. Murray was drafted byKansas City in the fourth round. The duo helpedanchor a secondary that ranked 11th in the nation inpassing yards allowed (179.5) and 25th in team pass-ing efficiency defense (113.19). In 2014, Minnesotaranked 18th in the country in pass defense (193.5)and was tied for 23rd in interceptions (15). AtMinnesota, Sawvel has seen three of his players draft-ed into the NFL. In addition to Murray, CedricThompson was taken in 2015 by Miami and BrockVereen was selected in 2014.

u Claeys also made a change on the offensive side ofthe ball when he tabbed Jay Johnson to be his offen-sive coordinator. Johnson had previously been theoffensive coordinator at Louisiana since 2011, but isno stranger to Minnesota. He grew up in Lakeville, which is a suburb of the Twin Cities and played highschool football there. His first coaching job was atnearby Augsburg College. While at Louisiana, theCajuns set school records for total offense (5,914yards) and points (461) in 2012. Johnson's offensealso finished 22nd in the nation in rushing in 2014, asit averaged 225.9 yards per game.

NEW VOICESu Claeys also added two new coaches in Bart Miller and

Dan O’Brien. Miller arrives in Minneapolis after a two-year stint as the offensive line coach at FloridaAtlantic. Miller. Miller has also served as an offensiveline coach at New Mexico State and Wisconsin. AtFAU, Miller's offensive line decreased opposing sacknumbers through improved technique and play.Miller's unit allowed only 26 sacks in 887 opportunitiesin 2015 and just 21 sacks from 869 tries in 2014. Inthe four seasons before Miller arrived, the Owlsallowed an average of 31 sacks per season. UnderMiller, the FAU line blocked for 10 different ball carri-ers who amassed 1,962 yards, which was just shy ofthe program record. Miller took over an offensive linethat returned just one traditional starter for the Owls.

u O’Brien was named to the staff on Nov. 30, 2015 andserves as co-special teams coordinator, assistantdefensive backs coach and assistant to the headcoach. O’Brien was previously Minnesota's director offootball operations from 2008-14 and was a seniorassociate athletic director for the Gophers with over-sight of the football program from 2014-15. O'Brien isa fixture in Minnesota football and has experienceworking at the high school, NAIA, NCAA Division III,NCAA Division II and NCAA Division.

u Minnesota linebacker coach Mike Sherels is recover-ing from some recent unexpected surgeries and willnot be coaching against Indiana State. There is notimetable for Sherels full-time return to the team. While Sherels recovers, Claeys named Keith Jordanacting linebackers coach. Jordan, who is in his 35th

u Minnesota was a perfect 4-for-4 in the red zoneagainst Oregon State, scoring four touchdowns.

u The Gophers rushed for 32 touchdowns in 2014, butsaw that number dip to 17 in 2015. Minnesota rushedfor four touchdowns against Oregon State. It was thefirst time in 16 games that the Gophers rushed for fourscores. They last did so in a win at Nebraska in 2014.

u Minnesota played four true freshman versus OregonState in Tai’yon Devers, Tyler Johnson, Kamal Martinand Antoine Winfield Jr. Devers had two sacks andforced two fumbles while Johnson made three catchesfor 31 yards and also provided a key block onLeidner’s first rushing score. Martin recovered a fum-ble and Winfield played on special teams.

u Minnesota was trailing Oregon State 23-17 after threequarters, but rallied for a 30-23 victory. Last year,Minnesota was 0-6 when trailing after three quarters.Prior to the Oregon State win, the last time theGophers won when trailing after three quarters was atNebraska in 2014. The Gophers trailed the Huskers24-21, but won 28-24.

u Minnesota is 3-0 all-time under Tracy Claeys whenlosing the coin toss and 0-4 when winning it.

u For the first time since 2012, Minnesota began a sea-son coming off a win. The Gophers beat CentralMichigan 21-14 in the Quick Lane Bowl to end lastseason. Minnesota had previously lost the final gameof the season in 2014, 2013 and 2012. The Gopherswon their final game in 2011 and the started the 2012season 4-0. Minnesota is 1-0 this year.

u Minnesota had an Academic All-American in 2015(Brandon Lingen) and 2014 (Maxx Wil l iams).Previously, Minnesota's last was in 2005.

u The most recent APR was announced in April by theNCAA. The Gophers had a multiyear score of 992,which is a program record and the team's highestscore since the start of the APR scores in 2004-05. Italso is currently tied for the third-highest multi-yearrate among schools. Minnesota's 2014-15 Single YearScore was 988, which is also a program record.

u The 2015 Senior class won 28 games in four years. That’s the most by a Minnesota senior class since2006 when that class won 30 games.

u KJ Maye and Eric Murray both competed in the 2016Senior Bowl. That represented the first time since2001 that Minnesota had more than one player at theSenior Bowl.

u Eric Murray, De’Vondre Campbell and Briean Boddy-Calhoun participated in the 2016 NFL Combine. It wasthe second straight year that Minnesota had threeplayers at the combine.

u Last year, Minnesota won the Quick Lane Bowl, 21-14, against Central Michigan to snap a seven-gamebowl losing streak.

u With coach Claeys at Minnesota, the Gophers havehad four First Team All-Big Ten defensive selectionsin five years. In contrast, Minnesota had five FirstTeam All-Big Ten defensive selections from 2000-10.
