CASE STORY N°1What does it take to submit a competitive bid
On early June 2014 the news fi nally broke on: the long awaited bid round is on. The acreage off ered includes an early identi fi ed block off ering fi eld re-development opportuniti es, i.e. early cash fl ow in conjuncti on with prolifi c explorati on acreage.
A week later GPCI is mandated to evaluate the coveted acreage and pulls together a competent multi disciplinary team spanning across the required skills: GG, PP, RE, WE, PT and FE composed of experienced GPCI and client staff supported by contracted specialists.
Aft er a thorough QC, informati ons available in the data room are quickly formatt ed and transferred on multi ple systems and shared data base. The team then starts quickly cull non-relevant content to focuse only on targets with suffi cient material potenti al to generate
reserves and fl ow.By the end of July the team comes up with a ranked list of explorati on and fi eld redevelopment opportuniti es, including previously non-identi fi ed potenti al. Further iterati ons and refi nements, followed by close discussions with the client`s economist regarding operati ons deployment and cost scenarios end up in a fi rm bid proposal, eventually endorsed by the client and submitt ed on ti me. A few months later, the news breaks that GPCI’s client was awarded the opportunity against numerous competi ng peers.
CASE STORY N°2Overcoming SCAL limits in a tight reservoir with a unique technical approach
On May 2013, GPCI has been approached to resolve a ti ght reservoir issue in Eastern Europe. The client reported that factual fl uid fl ow capabiliti es in the permeability domain did not match laboratory results. This challenging issue was brainstormed with the client. GPCI experts suggested running a pore scale diphasic fl uid fl ow simulati on, based on realisti c pore medium properti es, fl uid specifi cati ons and fl uid-rock interacti on properti es. The simulati on model was subsequently established, and quickly delivered drainage and imbibiti on curves as well as associated relati ve permeability curves. The latt er was then incorporated in a J-functi on model and upscaled into an Eclipse simulator.
With this innovati ve approach the initi al observati ons could then be explained and appropriate measures taken. Beside cost reducti on and fl exibility, another important merit of this kind of pore scale simulati ons is the capability to run multi ple intermediate cases for multi ple rock types, once the model is calibrated on SCAL. This story illustrates how value-added and rigorous data analysis is key to obtain new insights and innovati ve soluti ons. The secret lies in using powerful IT tools with a petrophysics perspecti ve.

CASE STORY N°3How reveal the secret truth from an ambiguous fractured carbonate data set
As a renowned specialist for diffi cult carbonate environments, GPCI was selected in January 2015 as the petrophysical partner of choice for an oilfi eld development drilling campaign in the Middle East. Mandated services ranged from planning of well logging to fi nal results delivery, including onsite logging operati ons QC. The early involvement of GPCI experts resulted in a pragmati c choice of logging suites, aiming at opti mal data acquisiti on at the lowest possible cost. However, challenging borehole conditi ons in the objecti ve fractured carbonates appeared to considerably aff ect log data quality. This led to important interpretati on ambiguiti es that at fi rst, seemed to lead to a dead-end.
By carefully examining the aff ected secti ons, GPCI petrophysicists subsequently succeeded correcti ng borehole wash-out and fracturing eff ects. But this was not good enough. GPCI petrophysicists then teamed up with client geologists and reservoir engineers in order to build a regionally calibrated model that signifi cantly reduced the remaining uncertainti es and ambiguiti es in the well data. This interdisciplinary approach proved to be successful. Associati ng the measured data with disti nct reservoir layers from other wells, in additi on to core data - and supported by fl uid fl ow simulati on - eventually led to plausible and consistent results.

CASE STORY N°4Solving apparently erratic LWD readings
In summer 2015, a GPCI client operati ng in Subsaharan Africa came to us with puzzling observati ons from LWD logs. While no lithology change was shown by all other LWD data, the acousti c log suggested otherwise. The acousti c log data accuracy and reliability are known to be of the utmost importance not only for reservoir characterizati on but also for formati on evaluati on and PPFG analysis. Hence our concern. In front of GPCI experts suspicions, the client sagreed to engage the challenge. A further analysis program was decided and revealed interesti ng non-trivial results hidden below the initi al common general interpretati ons.A systemati c analyti cal approach was then initi ated: acquired acousti c
waveforms across receiver array went through slowness-ti me-coherence signal processing (i.e. semblance analysis).
Eventually, these eff orts revealed a perfectly coherent, albeit rather non-trivial, explanati on for the observed phenomenon. The client valued the fast, creati ve, competent and results oriented approach adopted by GPCI in handling this parti cularly puzzling situati on.
CASE STORY N°5Access to big data is nothing without the expertise to read between those lines
Few months ago an upstream operator in the Middle East invited a few consultants to its headquarter. Reason of the call fi nding a soluti on to one of their fractured carbonate reservoirs, which had developed a worrying water-cut increase. To remain cost eff ecti ve, the whole process was limited to a fi ve-day advisory run at a fi xed budget. Consultants were expected to present their view on the cause of the issue and to propose a way forward. A package containing relevant stati c data (logs, cores…) and dynamic data (reservoir pressure, producti on, PVT…) was made available before the event. GPCI assigned two fractured reservoir specialists, a producti on geologist and a seasoned reservoir engineer to the project. With all the pre-reading already done, the team immediately engaged on brainstorming sessions with in-house experts upon arrival. Such an approach allowed the team to arrive with a comprehensive appreciati on of the relevant parameters contributi ng to the problem and to draw its fi rst conclusions.
Three days aft er the team was able to develop a clear data based concept that could explain what happened in the reservoir, considering not only the matrix / fracture characteristi cs in a quanti tati ve way, but also the well completi on and several producti on strategy aspects. GPCI delivered (ahead of competi ng consultants) not only an in-depth analysis of the water-cut causes, but also recommended concrete measures to bett er control the issue. GPCI’s systemati c approach has been accepted by the client and peer consultants as the appropriate soluti on. As the client further acknowledged, it was GPCI structured data analysis, its understanding and plausible interpretati on that made the diff erence.

SEDIMENTOLOGYAND DIAGENESIS
Laboratory scale sedimentological studies are performed on clasti c and carbonates reservoirs as well as on source rock systems. These can include, but are not limited to, petrographic (thin secti on) descripti ons, micro-facies and depositi onal analysis, pore type geometry descripti ons, diageneti c overprint assessments and parageneti c sequence classifi cati ons.
Sedimentological services can be carried out from sample material obtained out of cores, plugs, sidewall cores and cuttings. Facies types (grain components, porosity and cement types) are described qualitatively or quantitatively.

Studies are always delivered in a well structured framework allowing quick overviews for further decision taking as well as detailed references for planning further work , integrati on and simulati on.

Uncovering relevant aspects of reservoir strati graphy is essenti al to appreciate its overall geological embedment and architecture. There is no other alternati ve than to understand which factors control signifi cant lateral and verti cal variability, which in turn is key to build meaningful fl uid fl ow and producti on effi ciency simulati ons.
These relevant elements span from outcrop analogues to seismo-strati graphic interpretati on (facies analysis), core observati ons, any evidence from cutti ngs, thin-secti ons or logs. All such informati on must then be integrated into coherent quanti tati ve models. Such a methodology considerably reduces the risks and uncertainti es associated with the origin, geometry, orientati on, extent and variability of the rock unit (reservoir, source rock, seal).
For that matt er, GPCI provides high resoluti on biostrati graphic analysis, an essenti al tool to resolve criti cal strati graphic uncertainti es (formati on boundaries, strati graphic correlati on). Analyti cal tools mobilise micropaleontology of benthic and planktonic foraminifera (both on thin-secti ons and on washed samples), ostracods, conodonts and radiolarian as well as palynology and cover both Palaeozoic, Mesozoic and Cenozoic eras.
Understanding the interplay and the dependencies of source rock maturati on, charge expulsion, migrati on ti ming and trap formati on - to conclude on the risks and uncertainti es that limit the potenti al hydrocarbon accumulati ons discovery are basin modelling key objecti ves.
GPCI recommends 1D/2D basin modelling work where it can materially contribute to miti gate explorati on risk, either to extend proven prospecti ve fairways or to develop new plays and greenfi eld wildcatti ng.
At a more regional scale, 3D modelling based on state of the art soft ware and conducted by experienced experts may be the approach of choice.

This is no secret that formati on evaluati on is commercially crucial for an operator and therefore is at the heart of GPCI´s approach. But maximizing the effi ciency / ti ming rati o for logging jobs can have its pitf alls. In parti cular, there is oft en only one chance to obtain criti cal data. These constraints explain why GPCI, in recommending logging programs, always ensures that logging requirements and log quality are aligned with formati on evaluati on requirements. And opti mized to acquire only what is needed, not more – not less. GPCI provides hydrocarbon in-place volumetrics evaluati ons not only for segments of leads, prospects or discoveries, but also the assessment of the remaining potenti al of producing reservoirs or fi elds.
The risk assessment of individual segments or aggregated opportuniti es is usually performed in line with the risk matrix of the client. However, if required by the client, GPCI can use also its own consistent risking approach. GPCI has also developed a robust workfl ow for consolidati on of individual prospecti ve segments into leads and prospects and is able to defi ne the combined chance factor of the evaluated opportunity for diff erent hydrocarbon phases. This probabilisti c approach considers relati ons between the diff erent chance factors and volumes of the individual segments. The result can be directly associated with the client’s fi eld development plans (LOFs) and economic evaluati ons, and will support the portf olio ranking.
Stati c 3D modelling is important when developing new or mature fi eld, or even when considering the re-development of an abandoned fi eld or an under-developed reservoir. GPCI provides stati c reservoir modelling by integrati ng seismic, logs, core, porosity and permeability data, sedimentological analysis, well tests and producti on data. This will create the sedimentological model of your reservoir, highlight the reservoir properti es distributi on (NtG, porosity, permeability, saturati on, etc.) and reveal fl ow units. NETWORK MODELING OF MULTIPHASE FLUID FLOW IN POROUS MEDIA AT PORE SCALE

Pore-scale modeling is used to support experimental measurements and go beyond the sole laboratory capabiliti es. Our approach is based on open source, robust code developed at the London Imperial College for two-phase fl uid fl ow. The goal is to apply predicti ve pore-scale network modelling where experimental data are not available or diffi cult to obtain. Available experimental data are used to anchor the model to a specifi c core conditi on. Admitt edly, these conditi ons may vary considerably in the reservoir. Network modelling is used to assess the impact these variati ons have on relati ve permeability.
