Humane Society of Tampa Bay 3 Sherry SilkChief Executive Officer

We are so excited about our new promotion “Game of Homes” that will run through the end of 2016. The goal is simple, to save more cats. Due to a generous grant we received from Best Friends Animal Society and the Rachel Ray Foundation, we were able to drop our adoption price for cats over four months old from $25.00 to $5.00. We have also committed to taking an additional five cats per week from the Hillsborough County Pet Resource Center. We were chosen for this grant because of our innovative adoption programs and proven track record. In 2015, we saved 3,046 cats. We are confident that with this initiative we will adopt out even more.

On February 1, in another effort to save more cats, we began showing some of our cats at the PetSmart store located on N. Dale Mabry and I-275. It is a new outlet for us to showcase some of the beautiful cats that we have. Our wonderful volunteers are helping us to care for the cats during their stay at the store. We continue to partner with national organizations to help pets in crisis; we are a Humane Society of the United States Pet Placement Partner and an ASPCA Response Partner. Recently there was a very large puppy mill raid in South Florida where more than 100 purebred dogs were confiscated by the ASPCA and local authorities. When they called to see if we could help take some of those dogs we were able to do so. When the Midwest and Southeast were experiencing terrible floods, many shelters were not only inundated with too many pets, they themselves were flooded. Once again, we were able to help some of those dogs. It takes many shelters to help animals that are at risk and I am so proud that our organization is one of the first ones to step up and respond. We are able to create and maintain these innovative, life-saving programs because of your support. Here’s to another great year of saving even more animals.

The Humane Society of Tampa Bay is proud to serve as part of a community of animal welfare agencies who assist each other in times of crisis. As a Humane Society of the United States Pet Placement Partner and an ASPCA Response Partner we are on call to take in pets who have been rescued from cruelty cases, or in response to natural disasters.

In December, we took 11 of 100+ dogs rescued by the ASPCA from a puppy mill in Clewiston, FL. Life in a puppy mill is horrific and we were thrilled to play a role in the rehabilitation of these dogs who had suffered so much.

Less than one month later, we assisted the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) with a group of dogs* who were displaced from the Natchez-Adams County Humane Society (MS) due to flooding. Because the shelter was a designated temporary emergency facility for evacuees' pets, they had to make room for an influx of animals. We were able to take nearly 20 of the 100 dogs transported by HSUS.

In addition to saving the lives of more animals, emergency transfers bring much needed awareness and media attention to important community issues such as puppy mills, and the need for spay/neuter in reducing pet overpopulation. We are proud to be a conduit for such critical messages.

*These were not pets separated from their families during the flooding, but unwanted dogs who were relinquished to the shelter.

One of the greatest animal welfare issues facing the Tampa Bay community is the overpopulation of cats. The Humane Society of Tampa Bay is deeply committed to solving this problem and reducing the number of homeless cats. In addition to an aggressive spay/neuter program for both owned and feral cats,

we offer cats a natural, loving environment on our cat lanai while they wait, often for weeks, to be adopted. We took our concern about cat overpopulation to our friends at Best Friends Animal Society and they agreed to help. With funding from Best Friends Animal Society & a Rachael Ray Foundation grant, the Humane Society of Tampa Bay will offer cat (4 months and older) adoptions for just $5, for the entire year of 2016. We hope to not only increase the number of cats we find homes for, but to also reduce the length of time it takes to find each cat a home. We are so grateful to Best Friends Animal Society and excited to offer this program to the community!

In November 2015, the Humane Society of Tampa Bay entered a video featuring our cat lanai and adoption programs into a national contest with World’s Best Cat Litter. After a week of intense online voting, and with over 18,000 votes, we were proclaimed the grand prize winner! Our award? 15,000 pounds of World’s Best Cat Litter! Just in time for the holidays, a tractor trailer arrived at our facility with the delivery and we quickly put it to use. We anticipate the litter lasting approximately 6 months and saving us thousands of dollars! A huge thanks to World’s Best Cat Litter!!

In addition to cat adoptions at our shelter, the Humane Society of Tampa Bay will now have some of our friendly felines available for adoption at the South Tampa PetSmart, located at 1540 N Dale Mabry Highway. Guests can visit the cats during any of PetSmart’s business hours and on-site adoptions will be facilitated by trained PetSmart employees. We appreciate this opportunity to take more cats into our adoption program and find them loving homes.

An eight-month-old Mastiff puppy was brought to our Animal Health Center to be euthanized. Gringo's demeanor was that of a dog at the end of life, not the young puppy he was. He refused to eat, was lethargic, and could barely lift his head off the stretcher he was carried in on. Due to their financial situation, his family could not afford treatment and had lost all hope. But we weren't ready to give up on him, or them, without a thorough investigation into what was making him ill.

Although his situation seemed dire, we remained optimistic and ran a series of tests which revealed that he was so infested with hookworms his system was shutting down. Gringo needed an emergency blood transfusion. Thanks to our Save-A-Pet Medical Fund we would be able to cover the costs for the family so that their gentle giant could get a second chance at life.

After finding the perfect match in one of our shelter dogs and completing the transfusion, Gringo began to regain his strength, his appetite, and a bit of his personality. In just three days he was back to his puppyish ways and ready to live a long, healthy life with his loving family.

If you are interested in donating to our “Save A Pet” Fund, and helping save the lives of animals who’s owners cannot afford care, please call 813-774-4306.

In desperate need of a blood transfusion, Gringo's gums were so pale they

matched his teeth.

Gringo's grateful owner is reunited with the brave pup after his life-saving blood

transfusion.

Dorothea Burke has been volunteering with us since the fall of 2012. Because she works in so many different areas, her face is easily recognizable to HSTB supporters. Dorothea helps with shelter dog playgroups, is a dog companion, assists with birthday parties, special events, and outreach events, and generally does whatever is needed, wherever it is needed.

Dorothea is most often the last volunteer at events. She likes to stay until everything is all wrapped up and will not leave another volunteer behind to finish the work.

Her love for our animals and organization is evident in how hard she works without complaint, and the enthusiasm she displays. We are extremely lucky to have her as a volunteer. Thank you for everything that you do, Dorothea!

F STERING Shelby, pictured bottom left, was transferred to us from a facility that could not help her. Shortly after she arrived at HSTB, she gave birth to nine gorgeous, healthy puppies! Fortunately, one of our most experienced foster homes, Richard Bailor, was willing to take the big family until they were ready for adoption. He did this for us during the holidays!

Shelby's story is not unusual, every week underage puppies and kittens, as well as pets with special needs, enter our facility. Without foster homes we would be unable to help these animals. While her situation required a two-month assignment, most foster homes are only needed for two to three weeks.

Foster parenting allows animal-loving individuals to directly save a life, or several! Not only is it lots of fun for adults, but it provides a wonderful chance for students to earn community hours. Whether you are a young or older foster, you will be rewarded with the deep sense of accomplishment that comes with making a difference.

If you are interested in becoming a foster parent, please contact our Foster Coordinator, Dana Johnson, at 813-774-4346 or [email protected].

T h i s is our

Chase! We rescued him about a year ago! He was underweight and had been diagnosed with Demodex. With lots of love and care we nursed him back to health. He's an amazing boy and very smart too! He's a big boy who loves cuddling all night. We are now in New Jersey and he is as happy as can be. Thank you so much for giving me my best friend! ~Danielle Gaviria

Sweet l i t t l e Missy

was turned in to us when her owner developed Alzheimer's and had to enter a facility. Missy's owner had a childhood friend (for 50+ years) named Joyce who visited often and loved seeing Missy just as much. When Joyce heard about her friend, she was upset and worried about Missy because she'd promised her she would take care of Missy forever. When she found out Missy was at HSTB, she called and asked if we would hold her while she drove down from Georgia; we willingly agreed. Joyce's daughter drove her down and both she and Missy were SO excited to see each other. It was a beautiful sight to see true friendship and a promise fulfilled!

Just over a week ago

we adopted Jinx. He has totally and completely stolen our hearts in such a short time. We could never have imagined such a sweet boy. Thank you for all your services! Everyone was so helpful & friendly.

Humane Society of Tampa when I was 6 months old and I will be 14 in December! I have the best mom and I am so thankful she came into my life, she tells me every day how thankful she is I came into her life! She spoils me and I let her!" ~Leslie Adams
