Padron in seventh season at TLUDanny Padron is in his seventh season with the Bulldogs. He came to TLU after eight seasons as the head coach at San An-tonio’s Sandra Day O’Connor High School. Padron inherited a TLU football program that was 6-24 in the three seasons prior to his arrival, and the team was in a 13-game losing streak and coming off an 0-10 year. Padron has turned around the Bulldogs and become TLU’s all-time wins leader with an overall record of 40-27 (.597). He passed the late Jim Wacker, who led Texas Lutheran to NAIA-II National Champion-ships in 1974 and 1975, when the Bulldogs defeated Trinity 38-28 in Seguin on Oct. 8, 2016. Padron has won the SCAC Coach of the Year award three times.

Bulldogs in 4th, final year in SCACPadron and the Bulldogs joined the South-ern Collegiate Athletic Conference for the 2013 season. The Bulldogs transitioned to the SCAC after spending 15 football seasons in the American Southwest Con-ference. TLU will return to the ASC (and bring Southwestern into the ASC fold) starting in the 2017 season. TLU is 11-1 all-time in the SCAC. The Bulldogs are in search of their fourth consecutive SCAC Championship.

Bulldog drop first-ever SCAC contestLast week’s 42-38 road loss at Southwest-ern was the Bulldogs’ first-ever setback in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Con-ference. TLU had won 11 straight since joining the SCAC in 2013. The Bulldogs had been 3-0 in SCAC play against South-western entering the contest. TLU still has a chance at an SCAC crown. The Bulldogs

need to win their final three games to have a realistic shot at an outright or share of the SCAC title. The Bulldogs claimed SCAC titles in 2013, 2014 and 2015.

Second meeting v Trinity in 2016As part of the 2016 SCAC football sched-ule, each conference school plays each other league team twice during this year’s conference slate. The Bulldogs, at 2-1 in the first round of SCAC play, already have a 38-28 win over Trinity this year. That win in Seguin, on TLU’s Homecoming on Oct. 8, was TLU’s first win of the year and started a two-game win streak for the Bull-dogs. The victory also made Danny Padron TLU’s all-time career wins leader. Barrolle breaks career rushing recordTexas Lutheran senior running back Mar-quis Barrolle broke Royce Johnson’s TLU career rushing mark in Saturday’s loss to

Southwestern. Barrolle entered the contest needing 62 yards to tie (and 63 yards to break) Johnson’s mark, which had stood for 44 years. Johnson, a TLU Hall of Fam-er, gained 3,537 yards in a four-year career that saw him earn All-America honors in 1972. Johnson played for the Bulldogs from 1969 to 1972.

Barrolle record-breaker in 2nd halfAgainst Southwestern last week, Marquis Barrolle rushed for 75 yards on 22 carries in breaking Royce Johnson’s school career rushing mark. Barrolle broke the record with a 24-yard carry in the fourth quar-ter. Barrolle finished the night with 3,550 career rushing yards. Barrolle, the NCAA rushing leader in 2014 with 1,792 yards, has rushed for 666 yards on 163 carries in 2016. He has scored two rushing touch-downs and one receiving TD. Barrolle has caught 28 passes for 233 yards.

career-best) and completed 31-of-52 pass-es (59.6 percent). In his last four games, Galindo has thrown 14 touchdown passes and just two interceptions. In those four contests, he has completed 102 passes in 153 attempts (66.7 percent)

Galindo finds Oliver twice vs. PiratesQuarterback Zach Galindo found senior wide receiver Caleb Oliver twice for scores against Southwestern. Oliver started the game’s scoring with a 31-yard TD recep-tion on the opening drive of the game. Oli-ver completed TLU’s scoring in the contest with a 21-yard TD connection at the 4:03 mark of the third quarter. That touchdown brought TLU within four points of the Pirates, at 42-38.

Oliver ties Holmes for secondBoth Caleb Oliver and Jekovan Holmes have moved past Cameron Peavy on the TLU all-time receiving TDs list. Peavy, an All-SCAC performer, finished his illustri-ous career with 22 TD grabs. Now, Oliver and Holmes each have 23. Oliver moved

up to 23 after snagging a pair of scores last week against Southwestern. Holmes moved up to 23 two weeks ago with a pair of touchdown catches in the road win at Austin College.

Trahan still receiving TD leaderThe TLU career TD receiving record still is held by Jason Trahan, who caught 31 touchdowns from 2003 to 2006. Trah-an also is the program’s career leader in receiving yards, with 3,017. Holmes has 92 career receptions for 1,066 yards so far. Oliver is up to 95 career catches for 1,635 yards. This year, Holmes has 47 catches for 421 yards with nine touchdowns. Oliver has 20 catches for 307 yards and three touchdowns.

Off career night, Brown leading WRTLU junior J.B. Brown had a monster night last Saturday against Southwestern. He registered career-highs in catches (12), receiving yards (185), and all-purpose yards (233). He had a long reception of 58 yards, also a career-high. Brown now leads TLU in total receiving yards with 430. He has 35 receptions (12.29 yards per catch) and three touchdowns. He averages 61.43 yards of receiving per game.

Candler continues tackle collectionSenior linebacker Darian Candler led the Bulldogs in tackles for a seventh con-secutive time in 2017. He again posted a double-digit tackle number (10 this time) for seventh straight game. A returning All-South Region and 1st-Team All-SCAC honoree, Candler has tackle totals of 15, 11, 14, 14, 13, 11 and 10 so far in 2016. His average of 12.6 tackles per game is the 12th-highest tackle average in DIII this year. Candler leads the SCAC in total tack-les, with 88. He has two sacks, 10.0 tackles for loss, and two interceptions. Last week, Candler returned an interception 42 yards for a score.

Senior LB still chasing tackle recordSenior linebacker Darian Candler is making a run at TLU’s DIII-era total tackles record. Candler now has 257 career tackles, which is fourth-most in TLU’s DIII era. Two weeks ago, Candler moved past former SCAC Defensive Player of the Year Bradley Snowden for fourth on the list. The TLU DIII record for career tackles is held by linebacker Jake Dearing, who compiled 294 tackles in a four-year career. Candler will need to average 12.33 tackles per game over the next three weeks to pass Dearing, a first-team all-conference linebacker in TLU’s days in the American Southwest Conference.

Barrolle with 31 career total TDsA pre-season All-America choice by D3football.com and a 2014 All-American, Marquis Barrolle has scored 27 career rushing TDs. He is 13 TDs shy of tying NAIA Hall of Famer Mike Washington for the TLU all-time TD rushing record. Counting his career receiving TDs (4), Barrolle has scored 31 career touchdowns for the Bulldogs. Those 31 touchdowns tie Jason Trahan for the most TLU touch-downs in the Bulldogs’ NCAA DIII era. Barrolle also sits in a fourth-place tie with Tyler Brandenburg for points scored in the DIII era (186 - just two behind Trahan for third on the career list). Allen Cain in the TLU DIII-era leader in points scored with 247. Cain also is the overall all-time scoring leader for TLU.

Career-day for Galindo in lossBulldog junior quarterback Zach Galin-do set career-bests for completions (31), attempts (52) and passing yards (422) in the Bulldogs’ road loss to Southwestern. Galindo threw four TD passes (one off his

The Bulldogs’ game plan of keeping the ball away from the UMHB offense nearly worked. The Bulldogs ran 99 plays to 35 for UMHB. The TLU time of possession hit 48:22. UMHB held the ball on offense for just 11:38.

9. Oct. 8, 2015 – Danny Padron moves past Jim Wacker on all-time coaching wins listDanny Padron moved past the late great Jim Wacker as Texas Lutheran’s all-time wins leader after the Bulldogs knocked off conference rival Trinity 38-28 at Bulldog Stadium. TLU’s win broke Padron’s tie with Wacker. The two had been tied at 38 wins. The Tigers fought back from a 21-7 deficit to make the TLU lead just 24-21 early in the fourth quarter. LAST GAME BULLDOGS - SOUTHWESTERN 42, TEXAS LUTHERAN 38GEORGETOWN, Texas -- Southwestern returned two third-quarter kickoffs for touch-downs (the second on an onside attempt) and survived two final Texas Lutheran drives to win 42-38 and snap TLU’s 11-game Southern Colle-giate Athletic Conference win streak.

At Georgetown ISD’s Birkelbach Field, South-western moved to 4-3 overall and to 3-0 in the SCAC with the league win over the Bulldogs.

TLU, the three-time defending SCAC cham-pion, dropped to 2-5 overall and to 2-1 in the SCAC.

The SCAC football season is at the halfway point. TLU has SCAC games remaining at Trinity and at home against Austin College and Southwestern.

The Bulldogs drove down to the Southwestern 26-yard line with 3:14 to play before an incom-plete pass turned the ball back to the Pirates.

TLU stopped Southwestern on the next posses-sion and forced a punt to get the ball back at the Bulldog 18 with 48 seconds to play.

Zach Galindo’s desperation pass on the final play of the game was intercepted at the South-western 14.

Galindo threw for a career-best 422 yards and completed 31-for-52 passes. He was intercepted twice.

Bulldog receiver J.B. Brown caught a ca-reer-high 12 passes for a career-best 185 yards.

TLU senior running back Marquis Barrolle rushed for 75 yards on 22 carries and broke Royce Johnson’s school career rushing mark. Barrolle broke the record with a 24-yard carry in the fourth quarter.

Barrolle finished the night with 3,550 career yards. Johnson, an All-American running back

that played for Texas Lutheran from 1969 to 1972, finished his career with 3,537. The John-son rushing mark stood for 44 years.

The traditional kickoff return for TD by the Pirates went for 89 yards (by Nik Kelly) at the 13:26 mark of the third quarter. It was direct-ly preceded by a 42-yard interception return for a touchdown by senior linebacker Darian Candler.

The Dante Smith 39-yard kickoff return for a score, on the failed TLU onside attempt, came on the heels of Jacob Tingle’s 14-yard scoring reception from Galindo.

TLU scored on three occasions in the second half to cut the SU lead down to four three different times. But the Bulldogs never took the lead.

Galindo threw a pair of TD passes to Caleb Oliver (31 and 21 yards) and had scoring strikes to Tingle and Reggie Jackson (14 yards).

Oliver finished the night with six grabs for 99 yards and the two scores.

Candler recorded a double-digit tackle game for a seventh straight game in 2016. Candler ended the game with 10 stops, including seven solos.

LAST GAME TIGERS - TRINITY 38, AUSTIN COLLEGE 17SAN ANTONIO - The Trinity football team de-feated Austin College 38-17 Saturday afternoon in a Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference match-up at Jerry E. Apple Football Stadium.

The Tigers lit up the board with a touchdown in the first quarter with a 13-yard run in the middle of the quarter by Griffin Lay. Trinity’s defense also had an outstanding first quarter by not allowing Austin College to convert a single first down.

Austin College started of the second quarter with a 30-yard field goal. On their next pos-session, the Tigers answered with Davis King connecting with Rhodes Legg on a 31-yard touchdown pass with 2:07 left in the first half. A 47-yard field goal by Colby Doyal with three ticks remaining on the clock gave Trinity a 17-3 halftime lead.

Trinity started off the second half with a bang

when Colby Doyal recovered his own on-side kick to give the Tigers the first possession. Jordan Williams stole the spotlight the rest of the third quarter when he returned two blocked punts 10 yards each for two Trinity touch-downs! This put the Tigers ahead 31-3 going into the fourth quarter.

Five minutes into the final stanza, Justin Ventura connected with Cody Sandman on a 32-yard touchdown pass to give the Tigers a 38-3 advantage. The ‘Roos answered this with two touchdowns of their own, but the deficit was too much to overcome.

NOTABLESThe Tigers snapped a three-game losing streak, and improved their record to 3-4, and 1-2 in SCAC play. Austin College dropped to 2-5 and 0-3 in SCAC. The two teams will play again November 12 at Trinity, for their final regu-lar-season tilt.

Trinity has won four consecutive meetings with the Kangaroos, including two last season. The Tigers lead the series 47-30-6, dating back to the 1904 campaign.

The 38 points scored by Trinity marked a sea-son-high for the Tigers.

Colby Doyal’s 47-yard field goal in the second quarter was a career-high mark for the Tiger junior. Doyal also connected on 5-5 extra-point attempts to end the day.

Jordan Williams blocked two punts in the third quarter, and returned each 10 yards for a touchdown.

Quarterbacks Davis King and Justin Ventura combined for 196 yards in the air. Each player also connected on a touchdown pass.

LAST MEETING - TEXAS LUTHERAN 38, TRINITY 28 (OCT. 8, 2016)

SEGUIN, Texas -- Danny Padron moved past the late great Jim Wacker as Texas Lutheran’s all-time wins leader after the Bulldogs knocked off conference rival Trinity 38-28 at Bulldog Stadium on Satur-day night.

TLU’s win, its first of the season, broke Padron’s tie with Wacker. The two had been tied at 38 wins. Wacker led TLU to back-to-back NAIA-II National Champi-onships in 1974 and 1975 and coached the Bulldogs from 1971 to 1975.

“Just to be included in that discussion (with Coach Wacker) is quite an honor,” said Padron, now in his seventh year at TLU. “And it’s a staff thing. Our staff is responsible for those victories. And it took us two or three more years to get (the re-cord), so that tells you what kind of coach Coach Wacker was and what kind of teams he had. It’s always a team award, and we look at it as that.”

Trinity did its best to stop Padron short of the record and to spoil Homecoming for the Bulldogs. The Tigers fought back from a 21-7 deficit to make the TLU lead just 24-21 early in the fourth quarter.

TLU responded the Trinity score by ex-tending the lead to 38-21 with 3:25 to play after a pair of Jekovan Holmes TD grabs. Holmes, the sophomore out of San Anto-

nio, caught passes from former O’Connor High School teammate Zach Galindo for seven and two yards.

Both scoring drives came after Trinity turnovers - an interception and then a fumble.

Three of Trinity’s final four possessions ended in turnovers - two interceptions by TLU freshman cornerback A.J. Mason and a fumble recovery by sophomore Emory Cuzze (off a forced fumble from freshman Nwankwo Nwankwo).

Cody Sandman caught a Trinity TD pass from Davis King at the 1:23 mark of the fourth quarter, cutting the TLU lead to 38-28. Trinity then recovered the onside kick. But two plays later, Mason picked off King, who entered the game in the fourth quarter after an injury to starting quarter-back Austin Grauer.

Matt McCullough also intercepted a pass for TLU. The first-quarter INT by the senior strong safety was the first of three interceptions for TLU.

The Bulldogs were plus-4 in the turnover margin battle. TLU did not commit a turn-over while Trinity committed four. The Trinity turnovers led to 14 TLU points.

TLU improved to 1-4 overall and to 1-0 in

the Southern Collegiate Athletic Confer-ence.

Trinity dropped to 2-3 overall and to 0-1 in the SCAC. With the 2016 SCAC being the last football season for the conference in the foreseeable future, Trinity’s 2016 trip to Bulldog Stadium may be its last for a while. The two schools are not scheduled to play each other in either 2017 or 2018. Trinity starts competition in the Southern Athletic Association in football only in 2017. TLU returns to the American Southwest Con-ference in 2017 in football only.

TLU is now 10-0 all-time in the SCAC since joining the league in 2013. The Bull-dogs captured SCAC Championships in 2013, 2014 and 2015.

Trinity plays a second conference game against TLU this season. The Tigers host TLU on Oct. 29 in a 1 p.m. contest at Trin-ity Football Stadium in San Antonio.

Saturday’s loss was Trinity’s fourth consec-utive to TLU.

TLU pre-season All-American Marquis Barrolle put the Bulldogs in front early in the first quarter on a 1-yard rush. The TD was set up by Zach Galindo’s 67-yard pass to Caleb Oliver. The scoring drive covered 80 yards in just five plays.
