PIONEER CLASSIC • The Pioneers hosted the 2016 Pioneer Classic this past weekend at Hamilton Gymnasium• DU defeated [20] Loyola Marymount in four sets and swept Montana State, but fell to Utah State to go 2-1 in the tournament• Denver’s win over [20] LMU was the first since Sept. 6, 2011 (vs [19] Colorado State, 3-1)

ALL-TOURNEY NOD • Nola Basey was the lone DU representative on the Pioneer Classic All-Tournament team• Basey finished with 24 kills at the Classic, averaging 2.18 per set, to go with a .191 hitting percentage, three service aces, 24 digs and six block assists• Her second All-Tournament team in the 2016 season (Aztec Invitational)

A CAREER FIRST • Ruth Okoye garnered the first Summit League Defensive Player of the Week award of her career after pacing the Denver defense on the court at the Pioneer Classic• The Aurora, Colo., native averaged 2.18 blocks per set at the Classic, totaling two solo blocks and 22 block assists in three matches at Hamilton Gym• She recorded both solo blocks and nine block assists in DU’s win over [20] LMU, recording a new career high with 11 total• Okoye followed up with eight block assists in the win over Montana State and closed out the Classic with five block assists in the loss to Utah State

NOTHING BUT THE RUTH • Okoye is currently leading the Summit League in blocks per set and total blocks at 1.68 and 37, respectively• She also ranks seventh in the nation in total blocks and eighth in blocks per set• At .391, Okoye is also in the top 100 in the NCAA in attack percentage, currently ranked 61st• Okoye is currently one of four DU players with at least 40 kills, totaling 47, and one of three players with at least 25 blocks• She currently leads the team with 67.5 total points

2016 NOTES• Kayla Principato and Emma Willis join Okoye in the NCAA block rankings• Principato is 65th in blocks (28) and 73rd in blocks per set (1.27), while Willis is 102nd in blocks (26) and 111th in blocks per set (1.18)

ATOP THE SUMMIT • Okoye, Principato, and Willis are ranked first, second and third, respectively, in the Summit League in total blocks and blocks per set• Sitting with the second best mark, Okoye is right behind South Dakota’s Kelly Law (.436) in hitting percentage, while Principato is 13th with a .254 mark• Basey is currently tied for third in conference with eight service aces, while Olivia Novotny is tied for eighth with seven aces• As a team, DU is third in hitting percentage (.245), but first in opponent hitting percentage (.164)• Denver is also first in total blocks and blocks per set

US VS. THEM • Aside from their defensive prowess, the Pioneers have doubled their opponents’ total in service aces (37 to 18)• DU is outpacing their opponents in blocks per set (3.02 to 1.82), kills per set (12.36 to 11.68) and assists per set (11.68 to 11.14)• Opponents have recorded more digs (297 to 287) but have also committed more errors (138 to 100) and attacks (725 to 703)

Tom Hogan joined the Pioneers’ coaching staff as the first assis-tant in the summer of 2012 for head coach Jesse Mahoney and was named the associate head coach after the 2014 season. Ahead of the 2016 season, Ho-gan was named the seventh head coach in DU volleyball history.

Denver capped off its second 27-win season with its second straight trip to the NCAA tournament, finishing 27-8 on the season. The Pioneers faced

No. 5 seed Washington after winning The Summit League Champion-ship and earning The Summit League regular season title with a 13-3 record.

The Pioneers wrapped up the 2014 season with the program’s best record in history (27-7, 13-3 Summit) and Summit League regular season and tournament titles. The team also made its first appearance in the NCAA Tournament in program history at Moby Arena in Fort Collins, Colo.

As the offensive coordinator at DU, Hogan has helped the team has achieve success, becoming one of the most efficient offenses in the country. The Pioneers recorded .245, .266, .266 and .257 offense efficiencies in 2012, 2013, 2014 and 2015, respectively, ranking 44th, 20th, 19th and 30th in the country.

Hogan is also the recruiting coordinator for DU. Denver’s 2014 re-cruiting class was ranked 28th by PrepVolleyball.com, the first top-30 recruiting class in program history.

Hogan brings a wealth of coaching experience to Denver, including an Olympic silver medal. He was a member of the coaching staff of the USA Women’s National Volleyball Team from 2002-2008. During this time, Hogan helped the team win the silver medal at the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games, the first time USA competed in the gold medal game since 1984. Among many others, he coached former AVCA All-Americans and three-time Olympians Stacy Sykora and Robyn Ah Mow-Santos.

In 2005, Hogan helped Team USA earn gold at the 2005 NORCECA Championships and silver at the World Grand Champions Cup. In

September of 2007, he was named the U.S. Olympic Committee Coach of the Month after help resurrecting Team USA from a disappointing 2006 season. 2007 saw Team USA bounce back to a 26-11 record en route to earning 2008 Olympic Games qualification at the FIVB World Cup. Hogan was also head coach of Team USA during the 2008 Pan American Cup in Mexico, helping the U.S. receive a berth in the 2009 FIVB World Grand Prix and a fifth-place finish with a youthful team.

In 2014 and 2015, Hogan served as the head coach of the USA Junior National Team. The U.S. won the Global Challenge tournament in 2015, overcoming Italy in the finals in five sets. In 2014, the team won the gold medal in the NORCECA U20 Tournament, defeating the Dominican Republic in the semifinals 3-0 and Cuba in the finals 3-0. The team also qualified for the Junior World Championships.

Beginning in 2011, Hogan also began as head coach of the U.S. Girls’ Select A1 and A2 Volleyball Programs. The USA Select National Team, also headed by Hogan, earned a silver medal at the 2013 USA High Performance Championships and a bronze medal in 2012.

Hogan served as an assistant coach with the USA Junior National Team in 2004, and was a member of the 2005 Junior National Team that won the gold medal at the NORCECA Championships. He also gained valuable experience working with the USA Youth National A2 Team. Hogan began his USA Volleyball coaching career in 2003 as an apprentice coach working with the USA National Team, the USA National Training Team and the USA Youth National Team. His USA High Performance Pipeline coaching experience includes USA National Team, National A2, JNT, JNTA2, YNT, YNTA2, Select A1 and Select A2.

Hogan also holds overseas professional-level coaching experience, having spent a season as assistant coach for the Volero Zurich team, member of the Swiss Women’s Professional League competing in the European Cup and Champions League.

Hogan is a 2002 graduate of Miami (Ohio) with a bachelor of arts de-gree in management information systems and a minor in marketing, and graduated with a master’s in sports administration from Xavier (Ohio) University in 2004. Hogan served as the head coach of the Miami (Ohio) University National Champion women’s volleyball club team in 2002, after leading the team to the national final in 2001.

Hogan resides in Denver with his wife, Lindsay, and their daughter Summer. Lindsay works for the United States Olympic Committee in Colorado Springs as a director of media and public relations.

Katelin Batten completed her fourth season under head coach Jesse Mahoney in 2015. Since joining the program, the Pioneers have put together the 12th, 13th,14th and 15th winning seasons in program history and made back-to-back appearances in the NCAA Tournament in 2014 and 2015.

The 2014 team won both the regular season and conference tournament titles and earned the program’s first automatic bid into the NCAA tournament. Batten led the Pioneer defense to a conference best 16.18 digs-per-set average with libero Kate Acker earning All-Summit League honors.

In 2013 Batten and the Pioneers matched their 2012 win total finishing second in Summit League regular season play. During the 2013 conference tournament, the Pio-neers came from two-sets down to beat South Dakota in the Summit League Semifinals to advance to the program’s first ever league final. Denver narrowly missed a bid to the NCAA tournament after falling to IUPUI in the confer-ence tournament championship match. In their senior campaigns, Brea Muhle and Colleen King both earned All-Summit League, AVCA All-Region, and AVCA Honor-able Mention All-America honors. Muhle also finished the season ranked 6th in the NCAA in Hitting Percentage.

In her first season as assistant, Batten helped Denver to a 17-13 overall record and a 10-8 mark in the Pioneers one and only season in the Western Athletic Conference. She worked closely with the Pioneers libero corps of Kate Acker, Sammy Berger and Kelly Morton, guiding them to a

14.7 digs per set average.

Batten also works heavily within the USA Volleyball High Performance Pipeline. In 2015 Batten served as an assis-tant coach on the Youth A1 Red Team at the USA High Performance Championships, winning a bronze medal in the International Women’s division. In 2014 she assisted in training the USA Junior National and Youth National Teams before the NORCECA championships in which a gold and silver medal were won respectively. She also served as a coach during the 2013 and 2014 USA HP Holi-day Camps and was the featured coach in USA Volleyball’s March 2014 blog.

Batten came to DU with a wealth of playing experience after playing four years at Colorado State University. She was also mentored by some of the greatest figures in club and youth volleyball.

Prior to joining DU, Batten was an assistant to former Ohio State head coach, Jim Stone at Front Range Volleyball Club. She also served as an assistant with the Norco Volleyball Club under former University of Nebraska head coach, Terry Pettit.

At CSU, she earned Mountain West Conference Libero of the Year honors in 2009, along with AVCA All-America and AVCA All-Region recognition. She currently holds the MWC record and CSU record for all-time career digs and helped CSU earn NCAA Tournament appearances in all four years including a Sweet Sixteen appearance in 2009.

She graduated with a BA in Journalism and Technical Communication from CSU in 2010 and is currently work-ing towards a MS in Organizational Leadership from the University of Denver.

Batten resides in Denver.

Tupac joined the Pioneers’ coach-ing staff as the second assistant and offensive coordinator before the 2016 season. He will also assist in evaluating and recruiting future prospects.

Tupac brings experience from the college, international and

club levels, most recently as the director of volleyball operations at Penn State. Penn State made a sweet sixteen appearance and finished with a 28-6 record during Tupac’s season with the Nittany Lions.

Internationally, Tupac has worked with USA Volleyball in various positions. Most recently, he served as an assistant coach for the women’s indoor national team at the 2015 Pan American Games in Toronto, Can-ada, where the US won gold for the first time since 1965. In 2014, Tupac worked with both the US junior and senior teams at the NORECECA World Championship Qualifiers. He served as the technical coordinator for the women’s volleyball indoor youth national squad and worked for the gold medal-winning women’s indoor national team.

Tupac previously served as a graduate assistant at Iowa State and volun-teer assistant at Loyola Marymount (Calif.). At Iowa State, the Cyclones advanced to the second round of the 2014 NCAA Tournament and finished ranked second in the Big 12. Tupac assisted LMU with training,

video coordinating, data analysis and the compilation of scouting re-ports for the 2013 season.

Tupac has been honored for his work in volleyball as a recipient of the 2015 AVCA 30 Under 30 awards, which recognizes 30 up-and-coming volleyball coaches under 30 years old at all levels of the game.

At the club level, Tupac has served as a coach and administrator for the All Iowa Attack Volleyball Club and Sunshine Volleyball Club. As the head coach of the All Iowa Attack 18’s Team, the squad finished in first place at both the Iowa Regionals and the Northern Lights USAV Qual-ifier. In 2014, he coached the 17-Red team to a 17-National gold medal. Tupac also spent seven years with the Sunshine Volleyball Club and guided the 2013 18-South Bay team to a bronze medal at the 18-Nation-als. Both clubs experienced great growth during Tupac’s time with them; the Sunshine Volleyball Club expanded from 15 teams to 23 teams, while the All Iowa Attack Volleyball Club grew from five to nine teams.

In college, Tupac played for coach Al Scates as a member of the UCLA men’s volleyball team. He graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in English and later began pursuing his Masters of Education at Iowa State.

Eduardo Fiallos joined the Pioneers’ coaching staff in the fall of 2013 as the volunteer assistant coach.

He was introduced to volleyball as a high school senior in Phoenix, Ariz., and played as a member of the University of Arizona men’s club team. While working towards his degree and playing, he began coaching in the spring of 1993.

Since earning his CAP level I credential in 1993, he has continued coaching Junior Olympic volleyball, coaching for clubs in Arizona, Louisiana and California and at camps in Arizona, Louisiana, California, Florida and Colorado. During his career, he has guided three different teams to top-30 finishes (out of over 300 teams) at the Volleyball Festi-val.

In 1997, Fiallos was initiated into the collegiate coaching ranks when he became the volunteer assistant at his alma mater. He went on to coach at Cal State - Dominguez Hills, which plays in one of the premier NCAA Division II conferences in the nation. He has also coached Division I volleyball at the University of Louisiana- Lafayette. During his collegiate coaching, he also taught volleyball and volleyball coaching classes.

He moved to Denver in the summer of 2004 and immediately began working with Front Range Volleyball Club as the assistant coach of 15 White, the 2005 RMR Champion and silver medal winner at Junior

Olympics in 2005. He was the assistant of 18 Gold during the 2006 season.

He spent the fall of 2006 as an assistant coach at North Caro-lina State University in Raleigh, N.C. He returned to Denver and Front Range after the completion of the college season and worked full time for the club as the network administrator. He spent the 2007 club season as the assistant coach of 18 Black. Black medaled twice during his tenure, winning a silver medal at the Northern Lights National Qualifier and a bronze medal at the AAU National Championships. He coached 14 Royal for one season, 16 Red for one season, 17 Silver for two seasons and 18 Gold for one season.

Fiallos served from 2007 to 2015 as an administrator for Colorado Crossroads Junior National Qualifier and Tournament Magic, which ran several multi-day junior volleyball tournaments, including the Big South Junior National Qualifier. He handled all aspects of event registration and scheduled and assisted in all phases of tournament administration for these events.

He is currently the Recruiting Coordinator and Technical Advisor for the Colorado Volleyball Association.
