JULY 4, 2017Rockin’ Fourth of JulyRiverfront Park, Free

Greetings and Welcome!

We are thrilled and honored to begin a new and exciting chapter in our proud 67 year history. Our new home here at the Civic Center exists today thanks to many years of planning and dreaming by the visionaries of Mankato.

Maestro Leonard Bernstein spoke after John Kennedy’s assassination, and his voice seems to speak through the years to our own violent times: “We musicians, like everyone else, are numb with sorrow at this murder, and with rage at the senselessness of the crime. But this sorrow and rage will not inflame us to seek retribution; rather they will inflame our art. Our music will never again be quite the same. This will be our reply to violence: to make music more intensely, more beautifully, more devotedly than ever before.”

We make music to remind ourselves of our shared humanity, our shared values as a civilized people. It seems that until we get this piece right, we will be forever stuck in a vicious cycle of vengeance, acrimony, and hate. Music makes us better than we are. Great music takes us back in time and reminds us that love, death, loss, and hope are timeless subjects for us all. We only have to open our hearts to listen in.

I am delighted to welcome back old friends Peter McGuire and Tony Ross, Bethel Balge, Brad Shermock, and new friend, violinist and composer, Ittai Shapira. We are overjoyed to present the thrilling classics of Holst, Rachmaninoff, Schumann, Brahms, and Dvorak. The themes of wandering and wondering link our programs together and I hope you will enjoy this great music. We thank you for your faith and support in our mission and promise to make music “more intensely, more beautifully, more devotedly than ever before.” Join us.

On behalf of the Board, Staff, and Musicians of the Mankato Symphony Orchestra,

I remain, Sincerely yours,

Kenneth Freed Music Director, Mankato Symphony
