The2016/2017financialyearsawDestinationSouthernTasmania(DST)celebrateitsfifthyearofoperationassouthernTasmania’sRegionalTourismOrganisation(RTO).
Coveringalargeregion,incorporating11ofTasmania’s29localgovernmentareas,DSThasworkedhardtofacilitateindustrydevelopmentactivitiesinthesouthernregion.Establishingkeylinkagesandbringingindustrytogethertobuildcapacityhasinformedsustainableoutcomes,enhancingthestate’svisitoreconomy.
ThisyearwehaveseenrecordvisitationtosouthernTasmania,withoveronemillioninterstateandoverseasvisitors.DSThasreceivedcontinuedgrowthinmembershipandhasachievedhighlevelsofindustryengagementevidencedbyover850attendeesatDSTindustryeventsthroughouttheyear.
ItiswithmuchpleasurethatDSTpresentsits2017AnnualReport.WetrustthatitwillcommunicatethepassionandenergythatourorganisationbringstothetourismcommunityinSouthernTasmania.

Acrossotherseasons,significantincreasesinvisitornumbersisshiftingthedebatetohowwecontinuethisgrowthwhilemanagingperceivedovercrowdingincertainlocationsandmaintainingthequalityoftheTasmanianexperience.Asadestination,IbelieveTasmaniaisabletosupportmanymorevisitors,togrowitsvisitoreconomy,whilestillretainingthequalityofitsexperience.
Itisthequalityofthedebatethatisgoingtobeimportant;theconsiderationswemakeandtheinfrastructureimprovementsweimplementthatwilldetermineoursuccessinachievingthisgoal.
DSTwithsupportfromtheDepartmentofStateGrowth(DSG)iscoordinatingtheimplementationofDestinationActionPlans(DAPs)foreachidentifieddistrictintheregiontohelpdispersevisitors.Theseplansarebeingdevelopedbyeachcommunityandaimtomakeadifferencetothevisitorexperienceinthatareaandcreatebenefitsforthecommunity.
IacknowledgethefinancialsupportandpartnershipswehavewithTourismTasmaniainmarketingactivities,ourcouncilsacrossarangeofactivitiesandDSGinvisitorengagementandthesupplysideoftheindustry.
TheDSTBoardhasattractedagoodmixofskillsandadiverserepresentationofindustryandlocalgovernmentandIthankalldirectorsfortheirvaluedcontributionsoftimeandexpertise.
DirectorWillBarbourisnotseekingre-electionandIwishtorecordoursincerethankstohimforcontributinghiscontemporarytourismandmarketingskillstoourboarddeliberations.

Tasmaniahasenjoyedunprecedentedgrowthinvisitornumbersandeconomiccontributionthisyear,particularlysouthernTasmania.Majoreventsduringthewinterperiodhaveattractedmorevisitorsandassistedthefinancialsustainabilityofbusinessesacrosstheregionduringthatperiod.

AsanindustrywearewellcoordinatedundertheTourismIndustryCouncilofTasmaniawhichgivesallsectorsofthevisitorindustryanopportunitytodebatekeyaspects,todecideapositiononvariouspolicyissuesandpresentaunitedfronttogovernments.
IwouldliketothanktheStateGovernmentforitssupportoftheindustry,especiallyhavingthePremierasMinisterforTourism,andforitssupportoftheregionaltourismstructurethroughTourismTasmaniaandDSG.
ThechallengesfacingDSTinservingourindustryarechangingbutwiththesupportofourmembersandtheteamnowassembledatDST,theorganisationiswellplacedtoacceptthosechallenges.

Regional Dispersal
Ourmarketingeffortsarefocussedontheintrastateandon-groundvisitors,whilstsupportingTourismTasmania’sinterstateandinternationalactivitiesthroughtheprovisionofregionalcontent.OurjobistofacilitateinterestinthesouthernTasmanianregionandsupportoperatorstodrivevisitationtotheirownbusinesses.Todothis,wehavecontinuedtofocusoncreativedigitalmarketingchannelsandfacilitationofpartnershipstoleverageopportunitiesforindustry.SomeRegionalDispersalactivationsinclude:
Visitor MapInSeptember2016,welaunchedthe"ExploreTasmania'sSouth"map,designedtoshowcasethebrandstrengthsoftheregionandhighlighthowaccessibleourregion’sdiverseexperiencesare.Themapishandillustratedtoprovideaninterestingandattractivetoolforvisitorsthatwillcomplementotherinformationsources.
DigitalOurmarketingprogramfocussedheavilyondigitalmediaengagement,digitalcontentacquisitionandgeneration,aswellassocialmediachanneldevelopmentthroughourHobartandBeyondchannels.Wecontinuetodevelopuniquestoriestoboostsearchengineoptimisationacrossourwebsiteandgeneratesocialmediatraffic.WealsoworktoencourageambassadorsforourregionthroughthirdpartycontentviathecoordinationofInstameets.AnInstameetbringstogetherpeoplewithanInstagramprofileandfollowerstoenjoyandphotographexperiencesandattractions.Contentisuploaded,generallyviaahashtaguniquetotheevent,helpingtoexpandtheonlineprofiletheonlineprofileofthatexperience.
PartnershipsDSTworkshardtodeveloppartnershipsthatprovidecosteffectivemarketingopportunitiestoindustrythatmayotherwisebeinaccessible.

Nowinitsfifthyear,DSThascementeditspositionasanimportantstakeholderinTasmania’stourismindustry.OursmallteamofindustryprofessionalshasworkedhardtoprogressourthreeorganisationalpillarsofRegionalDispersal,IndustryDevelopmentandAdvocacy.Wehaveworkedwithinourresourcelimitationstoensurethesustainabilityoftheorganisationwhilstmaximisingoutput.
Partnershipsinclude:1. Tourism TasmaniaWeworkcloselywithTourismTasmaniatosupportitsconsumerandtradepromotionalactivities.Thisyear,thisincludedcoordinatinga$10,000prizeforthenationalDymockspromotionofthemovieLion;facilitatingprizesfortheTravelIndustryRoadShowtoMelbourne,SydneyandBrisbane,aswellassupportingfamiliarisationsfortheTassieSpecialistprogram.WealsocontinuedourregularindustrypresentationstoTourismTasmaniastafffromDSTmemberstokeepourStateTourismOrganisationinformedofdevelopmentswithinourregion.WearedelightedtoassistinthegenerationofcontentfortheirsocialmediaprogramthroughthecoordinationofseveralInstameetsduringtheyear.WealsoprovideadvicetosupportTourismTasmania’scampaigndevelopment.
2. Brooke Street PierWorkinginconjunctionwithBrookeStreetPier,DSTcontinueditscooperativeprogramtofeaturememberbrochuresbydisplayingthemthroughoutthishightrafficsite.WethankRedDeckerforitssupportinpartneringwithDSTtoensurethebrochureracksremainwellstockedduringhighpeakperiods.
3. Hobart AirportWeweredelightedtoworkcloselywithHobartAirport,featuringourHobartandBeyondMapatTasmania’smajorairlinegateway.Wecontinuetoexploreopportunitiestoencourageregionaldispersaloftravellers.
4. CruiseDSTpartneredwithTasports,CityofHobartandtheTasmanianTravelandInformationCentretoprovidepromotionofmemberbusinessesandindustrytopassengersarrivingon48cruiseshipsintoHobart.PosterdisplayswereprovidedintheMac02terminalandtouroperatorswereabletopurchaseparkingpermitsoutsideMac02from

whichtheycouldselltoursandexperiencesdirectlytocruisepassengers.WeworkedwithTourismTasmaniaandtheAustralianCruiseAssociationtosupportthefirstTassieCruiseExchangethisyearwhichconnectedoperatorswithkeycruisetrade.
5. Regional EventsDSTworkscloselywithEventsTasmaniaandotherindustrystakeholderstoprovideinformationaboutsouthernTasmaniatoencourageeventattendeestoexploretheregion.Forexample,weworkedwithBrightonCounciltodistributecollateralatthePontvilleRVRallyandprovidedmaterialtopromoteattendanceattheevent.
6. Southern CrossDSTmaintainsacorporatepartnershipwithSouthernCrossAustereowhichhasenabledustofacilitateseasonalcooperativetelevisionandradiocampaignsforindustry.
7. MonaWeareproudtoworkwithMonatoprovideopportunitiesforindustrytopartnerwithoneofTasmania’smajorattractions.Thisincludedthe12monthMonaIndustryCampaign,providingoperatorstheopportunitytolisttheirbusinessontheMonawebsite;andPainttheTownRed,aDST-ledinitiativeencouragingindustrytoincorporateredlightingandaddvibrancytoHobart’sDarkMofowinterevent.
8. AFL FootballDSTworkedinpartnershipwithNorthMelbourneFootballClubtoexploreopportunitiestomaximiseAFLtourismbenefitsinHobart.ThisincludedcommunicationstoNorthMelbourneFootballClub’s40,000members,whereDSTmembersshowcasedvalue-addofferingstoencourageregionaldispersalaroundgames.
9. Local Tourism Associations and Networks DSTcontinuedtoworkwiththelocaltourismassociations(LTA)andnetworkstobuildindustrycapacityandensuretourismbenefitsflowedontolocalcommunities.Forexample,thisyearDSTmanagedtheHeritageHighwayannualsocialmediaprogram.
10. Local GovernmentDSTisproudtoworkincollaborationwithits11Councilpartners,providingmarketingadvice
andassistancewhereappropriate.Thisyear,weprojectmanagedmarketingactivitiesforHuonValleyCouncilandKingboroughCouncilunderthecooperativeSouthernTroveprogram.
11. TasTAFEDSThasdevelopedastrongpartnershipwithTasTAFEDrysdale,welcomingstudentstoparticipateinDSTeventsthroughouttheyear.Thishasallowedstudentshands-onexperienceineventhostingalongsidetraining,networkingandeducationalbenefits.
Industry Development and Capacity Building
RecognisingtheincreasingrolethatRTOshaveinbuildingindustrycapacityandthegrowingnumberofindustryeducationanddevelopmentprogramsthatDSTcoordinates,wecreatedaspecificindustrydevelopmentcoordinationroleinJuly,ablyfilledbyNatalieHayes.IndustryDevelopmentandCapacityBuildingactivationsincluded;
1. Membership Asanindustrymembershiporganisation,DSTisfocussedondevelopingarelevantandhighvaluemembershippropositionforindustry.Membershipcontinuestogrowandcurrentlysitsatitshighestlevel.During2016-17,wewelcomedmanynewanddevelopingbusinessestothemembership.
2. Connections WecontinuetocommunicateandinformmembersthroughourHighlandstoHarboursnewsletterandregularemailupdates.WehavealsodevelopedengagementinaclosedFacebookpageforoperatorswherememberscanshareevents,updatesandnewswiththeirindustrycolleagues.
3. Education WeprovidedopportunitiestogaincontemporaryindustryintelligencewiththesecondDSTTourismSummiton9August,2016.Theprogramforthisfulldayindustryeventwasdesignedtoprovidepracticalandrelevantinformationthatourmembersandindustrycouldapplydirectlytotheirbusinesses.
ThesummitiscomplementedbytheTipsandTipplesmembernetworkinganddevelopmentprogramwhichrunsinHobartfromMarchtoNovember.TipsandTipplesisaseriesoffreeeventsthatbringsindustrytogethereachmonth

tonetwork,whilstalsofeaturingpresentersontopicalthemesrelevanttomembers.Thisyear,wealsotooktheTipsandTipplesconcepttotheregions,andrananumberoftheseeventsoutsideofgreaterHobart.
Inaddition,DSTpartneredwiththeDigitalReadyProgram(DepartmentofStateGrowth)todeliveraseriesoffivedigitalworkshopsthroughoutsouthernTasmania.
Thisyearweintroducedanindustryinformationtoolkitformembers,providedviawww.southerntasmania.com.au.ThisprovidesanA-Zofusefulinformationtosupportthoseworkinginthetourismindustry.
4. Industry Excellence WeweredelightedtodelivertheSouthernStarsofTourismagainthisyeartobringthesouthernTasmaniantourismstakeholderstogethertocelebrateourindustry.HeldattheTasmanianMuseumandArtGalleryinApril2017,theeventawardedfiveSouthernstars,comprisingofthreebusinessandtwoindividualawards.TheStarsrecognisedinnovation,brandexcellence,newbusiness,communitycontributionandyoungachievement.TheeventwillcontinuetobeanannualcelebrationofthesouthernTasmaniantourismindustry.
5. Research DSTworkedwiththethreeotherRTOsandtheDepartmentofStateGrowthtoprojectmanageresearchtoinformthedevelopmentoftheTasmanianVisitorEngagementStrategy,releasedthisyear.TheStrategyisdesignedtoenhancetheon-groundvisitorexperiencewithinTasmania.
DSThasalsoprovidedfinancialsupportalongsideotherRTOstotheTourismTracerprojectmanagedbyUniversityofTasmania.ThisprojectisimportantinprovidinganunderstandingoftravelpatternsofthetouringmarkettoTasmania.
6. Destination Action Plans WiththesupportoftheDepartmentofStateGrowth,DSThascoordinatedDestinationActionPlansforGreaterHobart,BrunyIsland,Tasman,CoalRiverValley,DerwentValley,CentralHighlands,andinconjunctionwithTourismNorthernTasmania,theHeritageHighway.WorkhasalsocommencedonDestinationActionPlansfortheFarSouthandHuonValley,bothduetobecompletedinSeptember,2017.ThesePlansprovidetheopportunityforlocalvisitoreconomyprioritiestobeidentifiedandworkedtowards.Weactivelyworkontheleadershipgroupsforeachplanwithlocalgovernmentandvisitoreconomystakeholders.

RepresentationParticipationonindustryandstakeholdercommitteesandworkinggroupsisanotherwayDSTcontributestoindustrydevelopment.Thisyear,groupsincludedtheHobartAirportCommunityStakeholderForum,DerwentValleyEconomicGrowthSpecialCommittee,TasteofTasmaniaAdvisoryGroup,CityofGlenorchyCouncilWilkinsonsPointWorkingGroup,CityofHobartEventsAssessmentPanels,RegionalJobsandInvestmentFundLocalPlanningGroupandTasmanianRoyalBotanicalGardensBicentennialGroup.
Regional Advocacy
Ourcommitmenttoindustryadvocacyisongoing.TheDestinationActionPlanshaveassistedinidentifyinglocalissuesandduringthepastfinancialyearDSTprovidedlettersofsupportforgrantapplicationsandassistedwithsubmissionsforfundingprogramsincludingTourismDemandDriverInfrastructure,RegionalInnovationandInvestmentFundandEventsTasmaniafunding.
DSThasalsobeenavoiceforanumberofindustryissues,includinginfrastructureprioritiesthroughoutthesouthernregion.
DSThasoperatedwithfourfulltimeequivalentstaffformostof2016/2017.Ithasachievedasignificantprogramofactivitieswithlimitedresources,testamenttothehardworkofitsteamNatalieHayes,AnneMenegatandKateMcCarthy,ablysupportedbyitsBoard,ledbyChairmanVinBarron.
Wethankourmembersfortheircontinuedsupport.Weareproudtorepresentourmembershipbaseandareexcitedabouttheupcomingyear.Wehaveacleardirection,ensuringwedeliveronourgoalstodriveregionaldispersalandbuildindustrycapacitytomaximisetourismbenefitstolocalcommunities.

SouthernTasmaniareceivedoveronemillioninterstateandinternationalvisitorsyearendingMarch2016/2017(up5%comparedwith15/16),withstronggrowthfromdomesticholidayvisitorsandtraditionalinternationalmarketsincludingUKandUSAandemergingAsianmarkets.
Nearly80%ofallvisitorstoTasmaniavisitsouthernTasmania.Thesouthernregionalsoreceived2.5millionintrastateovernightanddaytripvisitorsyearendingMarch2016/2017.Ourgoalsaretobuildcapacityofindustrytorespondtovisitordemand,deliverqualityexperiencesandtoensurethebenefitsofthevisitoreconomyflowthroughouttheregion.Ourkeyactivitiestoachievethisincluded:astrongindustrymembershipbase,digitalmarketing,partnerships,industryeducationandregionaladvocacy.
MembershipDSTistrulyanindustryledorganisation,with211membersfromacrosssouthernTasmania(up9%from2015/2016).Weweredelightedtowelcome47newmembersthisyearaswecontinuetogrowandevolvetomeetindustryneeds.
Digital Marketing Ourpublicfacingbrand,HobartandBeyond,hasbecomeanestablisheddigitalreferencepointforinformationaboutsouthernTasmania,withthewebsitereceivingover290,000pageviews(up45%)fromover101,000users(up38%)in2016/2017comparedtothepreviousyear.ThewebsiteisalsofeaturinghighlyinkeysearchtermsonGoogle.
SignificantworkhasbeenundertakentostreamlinetheHobartandBeyondwebsitebringinginmembershipdatafromtheAustralianTourismDataWarehouseandoptimisingspeedandusabilityofthesite.
DSThasbeendedicatedtocontentgenerationandleveragingsocialmediathisyear,withourInstagramaccounttopping25,154Instagramfollowers(up53%on2016)andFacebook17,904Facebookfans(up47%sinceJune2016).Moreimportantly,communityengagementwithoursocialmediaisimpressive,withourFacebookpagegenerallyreachingmorethan210,000peopleeachmonth.Instagramisperformingwell,generatingover160,000impressionseachmonthaswell.
IntermsofcontentgenerationbyDST,wehadexcellentinteractionwithourSouthernExposure
blog,whichsawover47,000pageviewsandourarticlesandblogswereseenbyinexcessofonemillionpeopleonFacebook.
FourInstameetswereheldduringtheyeartoenhancethirdpartycontentgenerationtooursocialmediachannels.TheseincludedaTassieStyle(inlinewithTourismTasmania’smarketingcampaign)meetintheSouthernTroveandHeritageHighwayregionsandameetatDarkMofo.EachwereheldinpartnershipwithTourismTasmaniaandtherespectivelocaltourismorganisations,industrynetworksandlocalgovernmentauthorities.WealsoworkedwithCricketTasmaniatocoordinateanInstameetfor100DaystotheTestatBlundstoneArena.

Visitor MapTheinauguraleditionofour''ExploreTasmania'sSouth''mapwaswellreceivedbyvisitorswithaprintrunof150,000distributedthroughouttheStateduring2016/2017viamajorgateways,SpiritofTasmania,VisitorInformationCentresandindustryoperators.LargerbillboardversionsofthemapfeaturedattheHobartAirport,TasmanianTravelandInformationCentreandMac02CruiseTerminal.ThemapdesignreceivedtwoDiemenawardsin2016.
Industry EducationAkeyachievementthisyearwastobuildourindustryeducationprogram,withstrongattendancesatourindustryeventstestamenttooursuccess.WecoordinatedthesecondDestinationSouthernTasmaniaTourismSummitinAugust2016atBlundstoneArena,attractingover170industryparticipants(up15%frompreviousyear).Over94%ofattendeessaidtheywereverysatisfiedorsatisfiedwiththeSummitand91%intendedtoattendfuturesummits.
WealsosupportedTourismTasmaniaandtheAustralianCruiseAssociationTassieCruiseExchangeevent,with16southernTasmaniantourismoperatorsparticipatinginbusiness-to-businessappointmentswithcruiseindustrytrade.DSTcoordinateditsannualoperatorforumonthecruisesectorinconjunctionwiththeTasmanianTravelandInformationCentre.Therewereover75attendeesattheevent.
WeweredelightedtoworkwiththeDepartmentofStateGrowthtohostfiveregionalworkshops
aspartoftheDigitalReadyprogram.ThesewereconductedinDerwentValley,Tasman,Channel,HuonValleyandHobartwith125attendeesacrosstheworkshops.
Industry Excellence and NetworkingThesecondSouthernStarsofTourismattractedover170peopletocelebratethesouthernTasmaniantourismindustryandrecogniseoutstandingachievements.Fiftynominationswerereceivedacrossthefivecategories.
OurTipsandTipplesinitiative,aregularseriesoffreemembernetworkingevents,continuedtoencouragememberstolearnfromeachotherontopicalthemes.DSTheldeighteventsthisyear,attractingnearly500attendees.TopicsincludedHobartdevelopment,Uber,TassieStyle,operatorvisitstoChina,Chinaresearch,SouthernStars,TourismTasmaniaWinterCampaign,WinterEvents,TasmanianWhiskyWeek.
DST’sAGMinSeptemberattracted90attendeesandincludedanetworkingeventwithapresentationontheThreeCapesTrackdevelopment.
AdvocacyAdvocacyforregionalissuesisanongoing,long-termstrategy.

Building Industry CapacityWiththesupportofDepartmentofStateGrowth,DestinationActionPlans(DAPs)willcontinuetobeakeypriorityforDSTasweworkwithlocalcommunitiestoimplementtheplansandaddresskeyprioritiestoimprovethevisitorexperience.
AcommonthreadthroughDAPsacrossthestateisthefacilitationofindustryleadership.WewilllookatopportunitiestoleverageexistingleadershipprogramsandresearchthedevelopmentofatailoredprogramthroughDST.

DAPSarecommunityandindustrydrivenplansthatidentifyachievableprioritiesandactions.ThePlansarebasedontheprinciplesthatvisitorsareattractedtodestinationsandexperiencesratherthanregions:thatthevisitorexperienceofthedestinationisacriticalsuccessfactorandthatlocalcommunitiesknowtheirdestinationbest.ThePlansseektoidentifythechallengesandopportunitiesfacingtheregionandtoestablishachievableaffordableprioritiesthatifdelivered,wouldincreasethedestination’scompetitiveness.
In2016-17,DSTfacilitatedthedevelopmentofDAPsinthefollowingregions:•DerwentValley•CentralHighlands•CoalRiverValley•HeritageHighway(inconjunctionwithTourismNorthernTasmania)DAPsforGreaterHobart,BrunyIslandand
Tasmanhadbeencompletedthepreviousfinancialyear;andplansfortheFarSouthandHuonValleyhavecommencedandaredueforcompletioninSeptember2017.
EachDAPoutlinesprioritiesandactionsasaguideforstakeholderstocollaborativelyandcooperativelyimplementthePlan.OncetheDAPhasbeencompletedforaregion,anImplementationLeadershipGroup(ILG)isestablishedtofacilitateaction.AkeyconsiderationforthegroupistheavailabilityandsecuringofresourcestoprogresstheimplementationofthePlaninatimelymanner.DSThasundertakentosupporteachILGforaminimumof12monthsaftercompletionoftheDAP,tofacilitateregularmeetingsandreporting.

AspartoftheimplementationoftheTasmanianVisitorEconomyStrategy2015-2020andwiththesupportoftheDepartmentofStateGrowth,DSThasdevelopedsevenDestinationActionPlans(DAPs)throughoutsouthernTasmania,withtwomoreplansduetobecompletedlaterin2017.
DAP projects snapshot
Bruny Island InfrastructureAkeypriorityfortheBrunyIslandDAPwasimprovedvisitorinfrastructuretoenhancethevisitorexperience.A$150,000infrastructurefundhasbeenestablishedwithsupportfromPennicottWildernessJourneys,KingboroughCouncilandStateGovernmentforprojectsthatareimportanttothevisitorexperiencebutnotcurrentlyfunded.TwoprojectsunderwayincludetrackmaintenancetoGrassPointontheFlutedCapeWalkingTrack;andinterpretationsignageontheDennesPointHeritageTrail.
Beacon Technology/Augmented Reality PilotTheDAPprocesshasseenanumberofregionsidentifytheneedandopportunitytousecontemporaryinterpretationtoolstobringtolifetherichstoriesoftheregion.ThishasresultedinacollaborationbetweenClarence,Brighton,SouthernMidlandsandDerwentValleyCouncilsonaninterpretationprojectwhichusesbeacontechnologyandaugmentedrealitytotellthestoriesoftheregionandengagevisitorsthroughtheirdigitaldevices.Thisprojectwillseethiscuttingedgetechnologyutilisedinanewcontext,andifsuccessful,couldbeappliedacrossTasmania.
Derwent Valley Tasmania Social Media ProgramTheDerwentValleyDAPidentifiedtheneedtodevelopastrongcentralvoicetofacilitatethemessagesofthedestination.DerwentValleyindustrystakeholdersestablishedasocialmediacooperative,calledDerwentValleyTasmania.Predominantlyindustry-fundedwithsupportfromDerwentValleyCouncil,thisgrouphasdevelopedacoordinateddigitalmediastrategywhichhasseenthedevelopmentofanewwebsiteandaprofessionallycuratedsocialmediastrategytopromotetheregionandtheexperiencesitoffers.

HewasafoundingDirectoroftheTourismIndustryCouncilofTasmaniaandcurrentlyrepresentsDSTontheTICTBoard.VinwasaDirectorofCricketTasmaniawithcommitteeresponsibilitieswhichincludemarketing,promotingmajorevents,BlundstoneArenavenueoperationsandtheTasmanianCricketMuseum.HewasrecentlyinductedintotheAssociationofAustralianconventionBureau(AACB)HallofFame,recognisinghis15yearsontheAACBBoard,includingthreeyearsasNationalPresident.

AsMayorofDerwentValley,Martynhasbeeninstrumentalinseekingnewwaystopromotetheregion,particularlyinthevaluableTourismmarketplace.ThisincludestheupcomingBeacon/AugmentedRealityProject,whichwillbringelementsofaugmentedrealitytotownsacrossfourCouncilareastobringtolifestoriesfromtheregion.
Lobbyingforgreatersupportfortheparksandwildernessareaswhichaboundinthemunicipality,Martynhasalsoadvocatedforawell-supportedculturallifefortheValley.ThiswasbroughttorealitywiththestagingoftheDarkMOFOeventatWillowCourtin2016.
