How to become a Chief Engineer

Demand is rapidly outstripping the availability of qualifiedengineers to manage the maintenance of modern vessels, which are powered by an increasingly sophisticated rangeof electrical, electronic and engineering equipment.

There are three clear pathways for engineering personnel. For students aged 16 and above, there is the officercadetship progressing to officer of the watch via aFoundation Degree or Higher National Diploma/Certificatepathway. The second route enables experienced merchantseafarers to progress from rating to officer certification, viaEOOW, second engineer and chief engineer programmes.

For the commercial yacht industry, the academy alsooffers a third progression route, leading to Chief Engineer(Yachts) via a series of approved courses. These are knownas Y4 less than 200GT to Y2 less than 3,000GT, and aremodular programmes for experienced seafarers and arestructured to offer continuous development.

Marine electro-technical officers (METOs) should have theopportunity to develop their careers along a professionalelectrical engineering path, perhaps leading to the rank of Chief Electro-Technical Officer, Chief Technical Officer or Electrical Superintendent (company dependent).

Under the International Convention on Standards ofTraining, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers(STCW), all new entrants to the maritime industries arerequired to complete an STCW Basic Safety Training Weekbefore joining a vessel.

For those wishing to progress their career from initial entry level to become an engineering or electro-technicalofficer, a substantial amount of training and seaexperience is required.

To help you understand the progression from initial entrylevel all the way up to Chief Engineer, please read the blueinformation box above on our engineer and electro-technical officer progression charts.

New engineering entrants to the commercial yachtindustry can also complete an Approved Engine Certificate(Yachts) at an early stage of their career.
