LETTER FROM THE CHAIRMAN

278CORPORATE

MEMBERS

It is an honor to serve as chairman of the Council’s board during an unparalleled time of growth in our region. Our home city of Nashville is truly the epicenter of health care innovation, problem solving and forward thinking.

The Nashville Health Care Council plays a valuable role in our transformative industry, and this year has been a particularly productive one.

We adopted a new purpose statement that better reflects the Council’s scope and serves as a strong foundation for unique programs and initiatives and more collaboration.

At a time when it has never been more important to foster open dialogue, the Council has provided its members with broad access to policymakers, industry trailblazers, finance experts and thought leaders through myriad educational and networking events.

Shifting policy implications under the new presidential administration, investment forecasts driving the industry and vital trends such as value-based models, predictive data and analytics, cyber security and telemedicine, were all pressing topics covered at member events.

The Council’s commitment to prepare tomorrow’s executive leaders is also thriving. We graduated 31 senior health care executives from the Council’s fifth annual Fellows class. I had the pleasure of addressing this year’s class and without question these 31 talented individuals are well-prepared to lead our industry in the coming years.

Additionally, the Council’s Leadership Health Care celebrated its 15th year of bringing together the industry’s emerging leaders for educational programming, networking opportunities and participating in delegations to Washington, D.C.

The Council is a vibrant hub that brings health care executives together as no other organization can. I am excited about what we have accomplished together this year and our bright future ahead.

DEVELOPING HEALTH CARE VENTURES: INVESTOR AND ENTREPRENEUR COLLABORATIONSIn partnership with Nashville Capital Network, the Council hosted a panel featuring investor/entrepreneur pairs in high-growth health care companies. Panelists shed light on what makes

successful partnerships in rapidly changing ventures. This year’s panel included: Tom Scully,

general partner, Welsh, Carson, Anderson & Stowe; with Clay Richards, CEO, naviHealth;

and Spence McClelland, partner, Noro-Moseley Partners; with Doug Ghertner, president,

engagement solutions, Change Healthcare. The discussion was moderated by Barbara

Cannon, COO, NuSirt Sciences.

FINANCING THE DEALMembers heard firsthand perspectives from financial experts on the state of the market, M&A activity and the outlook for funding the growth of Nashville’s $84 billion health care industry. The panel

was moderated by Tom Wylly, senior partner, Brentwood Capital Advisors, and

included Diane M. Daych, partner, Apple

Tree Partners; Grant Jackson, managing

general partner, Council Capital; Todd

Sisitsky, managing partner, Capital Business, and co-head of Healthcare

Services, TPG; and Mark D. Taber, managing partner, Great Hill Partners.

WALL STREET’S VIEW ON PROSPECTS FOR THE HEALTH CARE INDUSTRYMore than 600 health care executives gathered in Nashville to hear top investment analysts discuss 2017 predictions for the health care industry at the Council’s annual

program. This year’s discussion was moderated by Wayne T. Smith, chairman

and CEO, Community Health Systems. Panelists included: Whit Mayo, managing

director, Robert W. Baird; A.J. Rice, managing director, UBS; Chris Rigg, senior

managed care and health care facilities analyst, Deutsche Bank; and Paula Torch, former senior research analyst, Avondale Partners.

“More than anything, we look for companies that are on the right side of change in health care, and those that we can specifically help grow with our relationships.” – Grant Jackson, managing director, Council Capital

“There will be outperformance in areas that are a little more immune to the ACA decisions, including behavioral health care. Many sub-sectors of behavioral health, including companies that serve those with intellectual disabilities, eating disorders and opioid addiction, are poised for growth.” – Paula Torch, former senior research analyst, Avondale Partners

Since the beginning of 2005, more than $1.6 billion of venture capital investments have been received by over 300 different Nashville-based companies.

Since 2009, annual venture capital investments in Nashville have grown 450 percent.

More than $940 million were invested in Nashville health care companies by venture capital firms from 2005 through 2015—accounting for almost 60 percent of Nashville’s total venture capital investment dollars over that time period.

Venture capital investment in health care IT companies represents the largest share of venture capital investments in Nashville health care companies – growing from $2 million in 2009 to $62.5 million invested in 2014.

The Council and NCN jointly released a comprehensive report

on the local venture capital environment, titled

“Nashville Venture Capital Report: 2005-2015.”

Some highlights from the report include:

Through small-group opportunities for CEOs, CFOs and CIOs, Council members are exposed to high-level guest speakers in an intimate, candid environment, allowing them to make important connections and share ideas that will drive their businesses and the industry forward.

The Council partnered with ACG New York for the eighth annual Health Care Conference in New York City, allowing members to network with private capital providers, M&A advisers and corporate executives in the Big Apple.

In an effort to elevate Nashville’s role as a center of leadership and innovation, the Council is working with the Network for Excellence in Health Innovation (NEHI) on a project titled “Health Care Without Walls.” NEHI will work to advance a research and thought leadership agenda and to identify opportunities to overcome obstacles in the way of pushing health care out of institutions and closer to consumers; it will organize a series of “work streams” to do so.

The Council Fellows partnered with the Convenient Care Association (CCA) to host a small-group panel discussion titled “Health Care Consumerism Trends: The Role of Retail Health.” The panel

discussion featured William Green, general counsel

of Homestead Plans; Sandra Ryan, vice president

at Walmart Clinics; Marc Watkins, M.D., chief

medical officer at The Little Clinic; and Fahad Tahir, FACHE, CEO of Saint Thomas Medical Partners. The

discussion was moderated by Tine Hansen-Turton, executive director of CCA.

BRENT JAMES, M.D., ON DATA, QUALITY AND VALUEIn front of a group of senior health care executives, the Council hosted a discussion

with Brent James, M.D., a former surgeon and current chief quality officer for Intermountain Healthcare, a 22-hospital system based in Salt Lake City. During

the discussion, which was moderated by U.S. Senator William H. Frist, M.D., Dr. James touched on the role of clinical guidelines and data in health care, the use of electronic medical records, quality ratings and population health management.

“The solution [to health care] sits in this room – not in the hallways of Washington. I don’t think you can solve this problem at the Washington level, at a policy level. Can it drive us in the right direction? Yes, but it can’t solve it.”– Brent James, M.D., chief quality officer, Intermountain Healthcare

–Will Howorth, vice president, strategic business growth, HCA Urgent Care, and LHC Board Chairman, 2016–2017

INDUSTRY TOURS AND RECEPTIONSOpportunities for hands-on learning and networking are offered through LHC membership. This year, members toured Alive Hospice and
