  • Dear Donors, Alumni, and Friends,

Because of you, this year marks 15 years since the establishment of the Washington State Community College Foundation. I am delighted to have you as part of our efforts of transforming the lives of our students and cultivating a strong community through education.

Since my appointment as President of the College last year, I have been steadfast in my vision to improve access to education, increase student success, expand community engagement, and enhance our workforce development initiative. Because of you, we have made great strides toward the achievement of each of these goals. In fact, our enrollment numbers, course completion, and student success in developmental courses are all on the rise. Still, there is opportunity for us to do more.

Today, we are seeing greater community involvement on our campus. From advisory board participation to shared equipment for classroom enhancement, our students are benefiting from the direct access to their fields of study. Likewise, we are developing community partnerships that create pathways that allow a student to simultaneously earn their degree while meeting local employment demands. We have a solid basis of success that I plan to build upon in the coming year.

Because of you, the Foundation is indeed improving the futures of WSCC students and strengthening our beautiful community and home. Thank you for your generous support and I hope you will continue to share my vision to help our students achieve better lives.

    My sincerest gratitude,

    Vicky Wood, Ph.D., President, WSCC

BECAUSE OF YOUMESSAGE FROM THE WSCC PRESIDENT

    2

  • Dear Donors, Alumni, and Friends,

It has been a challenging year for the Foundation with the exiting of our Executive Director and several Foundation Board members.

However, it has also been an encouraging year for the Foundation with fresh perspectives and fundraising ideas from the new WSCC President, Vicky Wood, and with the implementation of systems such as Blackbaud to help us identify and reach out to new and as yet untapped contributors. The stock market performance over the last year has helped us grow Foundation assets, and the establishment of several new scholarships, including the Ruth Brightwell Memorial, Astorg Motor Company, Betty Hadler Memorial, Cheryl Ann Fornnarino-Reeder Memorial, and the Rotary Club of Belpre, are helping us better fulfill our mission to our students and to the College itself.

For example, the Foundation awarded scholarships for the first time in 2004 to four students in the total amount of $2,300.00. Last year, the Foundation awarded over $50,000.00 in scholarships to more than sixty students, and it provided more than $9,000.00 in emergency assistance for WSCC students in need of money for tuition, textbooks, gas, rent, testing/examination fees, and car repairs.

I am further encouraged by the presence on the Board of Dorinda Byers, Mary Lou Moegling, Stefanie Nelson, Christopher Penrose, and Telah Taylor, who are new members that bring to the table diverse backgrounds and new ideas on how to grow the Foundation.

With your continued financial support, the Foundation can continue to help students meet their educational goals, while at the same time providing our community with a larger college-educated workforce.

On behalf of the WSCC Foundation Board of Directors, thank you for your generous and continued support.

    Sincerely,

Gregg Emrick, ESQ President, WSCC Foundation

  • Dennis Morris Recipient of the Henry Goehring Excellence in Engineering Scholarship

In 2013 Dennis Morris was reeling from the loss of his two-year-old son. Lost in grief, he often found himself tinkering under the hood of a car. “It was more of a distraction,” he described. But it was those moments of distraction that helped him deal with his grief. “I found my passion through depression,” explained Dennis.

While the 27-year-old’s pathway to college may not be considered typical, he persevered and currently maintains a 4.0 GPA and is on track to earn his Associate of Applied Science in Diesel Truck Systems in the Fall of 2019.

“Any direction I could give to aspiring engineers would be to include inquisitiveness, perseverance, integrity and attention to detail in pursuit of your objective—and have a little fun along the way.”

  • Scholarship Celebrates Riverview Credit Union’s Longevity in the Community While Honoring Its Former Leader

In conjunction with its 50th anniversary, Riverview Credit Union, Inc. established the Cheryl Ann Fornnarino-Reeder Memorial Scholarship in honor of its remarkable leader, mentor, partner, and friend. Cheryl Ann was the daughter of Pearl Fornnarino, founder of the Riverview Credit Union, Inc. (RCU). She began as a clerk with the financial institution and was appointed Manager/CEO upon her mother’s retirement. During her tenure, Cheryl Ann was instrumental in the growth and expansion of RCU and her dedication and passion toward the credit union were both honorable and infectious for RCU’s staff and members. After 27 years of service, Cheryl retired in 2004 as the head of RCU and joined the Board of Directors, where she served until 2012.

Kayleigh Baker was the first recipient of the newly-established Cheryl Ann Fornnarino-Reeder Memorial Scholarship. She applied it toward her final year at Washington State.

She will graduate this spring from the social services program and plans to pursue a career where she can advocate and raise awareness for those who have experienced domestic violence and sexual assault.

    2017-18 ANNUAL REPORT 9

  • The Student Emergency Fund allows the Foundation the ability to bridge the gap for a student when they’re faced with unforeseen circumstances or an emergency hardship that affects their ability to continue their studies.

Last fall, Jacob Krantz was an out-of-state student trying to figure out how he was going to afford to make his dream of working in sports broadcasting a reality. Now 23, Jacob had been living on his own since he was 18 in Tullahoma, TN. For months, he couch-surfed with friends or slept in his car, until he was finally approved for government-funded housing. That small hand-up gave him some stability and soon he landed a job at one of the local automotive parts factories.

Steady employment on the factory circuit was hard to find and ultimately he realized if he wanted to break the cycle of entry-level factory jobs and fulfill his dream, he needed a degree. He decided to leave his hometown behind and move to Ohio to stay with family because “if school got too hard, it would be too easy to fall back into the factory routine,” he admitted.

After enrolling at Washington State, Jacob thought his academic ambitions had come to an abrupt halt when he was told he didn’t qualify for financial aid. Thanks to some valuable guidance, he was directed to The Foundation.

After filling out an application, Jacob was awarded a grant from the Student Emergency Fund which paid his first tuition payment and helped buy his textbooks, so he could start classes while other financial plans were put into place.
