Family Educational Rights, Budget & Voting InformationFamily Educational Rights and Privacy ActThe Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act was enacted as federal law in 1974 to provide parents of a student under 18 and parents of a dependent student 18 years of age or older, with the right to inspect and review any and all records, files, and data directly related to the student. The school District may designate certain student information as “directory informa-tion”, which is information that is generally not considered harmful or an invasion of privacy if released. This information may be released without specific parental permission. Directory information will only be released to alumni associations, PTA groups, athletic associations, entities providing educational, occupational or career opportunities, representatives of the District’s insurance carriers, or to publish in school news publications, school student newspapers, magazines, yearbooks or other student publications, daily or weekly newspapers for journalistic purposes only, athletic programs, musical or theatrical programs or news releases. Directory information includes a student’s name, address, date and place of birth, major field of study, participation in officially recognized activities and sports, weight and height of members of athletic teams, dates of attendance, degree and awards received and most recent previous educational agency or institution attended by the student.Parents who do not wish this type of information/photos about their child to be released should forward a letter to Shelly Newman, Director of Public Relations/Senior Illustrator, North Shore Schools, 112 Franklin Avenue, Sea Cliff, NY 11579 by September 25, 2017.

Equal OpportunityThe Board of Education, its officers and its employees, shall not discriminate against any student, employee or applicant on the basis of race, color, national origin, creed, religion, marital status, sex, age, veteran status, sexual orientation, or disability.

Title IXThe North Shore Central School District does not discriminate on the basis of sex in the educational programs or activities which it operates, and is required by Title IX of the Educational Amendments of 1972 not to discriminate in such a manner. This policy of non-discrimination includes (but is not limited to) the following areas: recruitment and appointment of employees, employment pay and benefits, counseling services for students, access by students to educational programs; course offerings; and student activities. The District representatives responsible for the coordination of activities relat-ing to Title IX are Jennifer Imperiale and Kevin Kurrus, North Shore High School, 450 Glen Cove Avenue, Glen Head (Tel. 277-7002). They will provide information relevant to the rights of individuals under Title IX, including procedures to be followed if such rights are felt to have been violated by the District or its officials.

Registration and Voting InformationQualified voters of the District elect representatives to the seven member School Board. Candidate petitions for election are due by April 16*, 2018. Each trustee serves a three-year term without pay. Residents also vote on the annual school budget, and make final decisions on special referendums by casting their ballots at the polls. Board Policy 5450.1-R Notification of Sex Offenders Regulation. If the Superintendent of Schools receives a Notification to the School District from the local law enforcement agency, the North Shore Schools will inform personnel and residents as neces-sary to fulfill their responsibility to protect children while in school care. Specifi-cally, a picture of the individual shall be provided to: (1) Building principals, who shall advise staff who regularly greet visitors; (2) Bus drivers; (3) The head cus-todian of each building, who shall advise custodians on duty when children are in the building; (4) Security personnel; and (5) Coaches. The Superintendent or a designee shall send a list of all groups that regularly use school facilities when children are in attendance (day care providers, e.g.) to the local law enforcement agency with a request that the agency notify the groups. If the agency refuses to provide information to these groups, the schools shall forward a picture of the individual to the leader(s) of such group. Any further inquiries shall be referred to the local law enforcement agency. ( Adoption date: June 15 2006).

Diversity is the understanding that each individual is unique; it recognizes and appreciates our individual differences. These differences include, but are not limited to, age, ethnicity, gender, ideology, physical ability, political belief, race, religious belief, sexual orientation, and/or socio-economic status. Diversity is the exploration of these differences in a safe, positive, and nurturing environment. The concept encompasses acceptance and respect. Furthermore, diversity in the North Shore Schools is about understanding each other and moving beyond simple tolerance to embracing the strengths of our individual and com-munal experiences, skills, talents and perspectives in order to build a better community. Information for Students and FamiliesKindergarten Registration Registration and Screening will be held at Glenwood Landing School beginning 3/19/18 (thru 3/22/18), at Sea Cliff School beginning 3/19/18 (thru 3/23), and at Glen Head School on 4/18/18, 4/20/18, 4/24/18, 4/26/18, or 4/30/18. A child who is five years old on or before 12/1/18 is eligible for kindergarten for the 2018-19 school year.School Closings or Delayed OpeningsSchool closings or delayed openings are determined by the Superintendent. When schools are closed because of weather conditions, the District requests that an-nouncements be made between 6:30 AM and 8:00 AM over the following radio and TV stations: WHLI (FM-1100), WINS (AM-1010), Channel 12 and WCBS (AM-880). The announcement is for “North Shore Central School District, Glen Head, New York.” In addition, parents, faculty, and staff will be notified through Connect-ED, an emergency notification system that allows the District to contact personnel or parents (by phone and/or email) in a short period of time. A message will also be posted on the North Shore Schools’ website at www.northshoreschools.org. Lunch will be served on delayed opening days. When the North Shore Schools are closed, no transportation is provided for any District resident to any school.Snow DaysThe District has three built-in snow days. Asbestos Compliance The District’s regular maintenance of the schools includes asbestos inspection in all facilities. In compliance with the Asbestos Hazard Emergency Response Act (AHERA), we undertake the following: re-inspect all buildings and spaces every three years for all asbestos-containing building materials, sample previously un-tested building materials suspected of containing asbestos, update our asbestos management plan. The re-inspection and updated management plans are available for review in the Main Office of each building and at the District Office. Use of Pesticides/Chemicals PolicyIt is inappropriate for anyone to bring any cleaning products into the schools. The control of insects and pests within our school buildings and grounds is an ongoing task. Safeguarding the children and adults who utilize our school buildings is the District’s primary objective. On June 15, 2006, the North Shore Board of Education adopted policy #8115 establishing an Integrated Pest Management (IPM) Program. The policy restricts the use of insecticide applications and requires that only autho-rized, trained and licensed individuals dispense pesticides on school property. All pesticide applications will adhere to IPM methods where the least amount of product is used. Written authorization by the Director of School Facilities/Operations is required prior to any action taken. Posting of the affected area and notification to the building occupants is required. Under no circumstances is a District employ-ee, school volunteer or person/organization utilizing District facilities authorized to possess and/or dispense on school grounds or within a school building any type of insecticide/pesticide product. If you have questions or concerns regarding IPM activities, please contact the Facilities Office at 277-7835. Any student, parent or staff member may register to receive written notification 48 hours prior to a regulated pesticide application. Individuals may request that their name be added to the school registry at any time during the school year. All interested should contact John Hall at 277-7835, Monday-Friday, 8:00 AM-4:00 PM.

TransportationBus transportation is provided for all kindergarten through fifth grade students who live over 3/4 of a mile from their schools, for all sixth through eighth grade students who live over one mile, and for all ninth through twelfth grade students who live more than 1 1/2 miles to school. Children also are transported to non-public schools within a range of 15 miles, as mandated by state law. Written requests for transportation to non-public schools must be submitted to the coordinator of transportation by April 1 of the preceding school year. District Code of Conduct The North Shore Schools Code of Conduct as well as all other Board of Education policies are available on the District website (under Policies & Forms).AttendanceThe state education law permits legal absence or tardiness for the following reasons only: sickness or death in the family, impassable roads or weather making travel unsafe, religious observance, or required presence in court. Parents are requested to advise the school by telephone, early in the morning, of the reason for a child’s absence or lateness and to provide the student with a written excuse when he/ she returns to school. Health IssuesThe school health services help students achieve physical, emotional and social health. School nurses offer individual counseling, instruction and appraisals of health. All students must have documented proof of immunity (vaccination, disease, or positive blood test) to diphtheria, pertussis, tetanus, polio, measles, mumps, and rubella to be admitted to school on the first day of the 2015-2016 school year. In addition, students entering kindergarten or the 7th grade will need to show proof of receiving the Hepatitis B series of vaccinations. Policies and procedures estab-lished in accordance with state requirements govern the care of a student who becomes ill or sustains an injury during the school day. School physicians perform physical examinations as directed by the State Education Department and are available for consultation when required.Special EducationStudents who are suspected of having a disability may be referred for an evaluation to either the building principal or the Director of Special Education. A determination will be made whether the student’s needs can be met by providing services or ac-commodations within the regular school program. If the student’s needs cannot be met with such regular support, and a comprehensive evaluation indicates the need for special education services, an individualized special education program will be developed. A variety of services are available to assist students. For further infor-mation, please contact a member of the school’s support team (principal, school psychologist, special education teacher, nurse, speech teacher, or social worker) or the Director of Special Education. Section 504Students with disabilities, but not classified by the committee on Special Educa-tion, are entitled to those accommodations deemed necessary to ensure access to all public school programs and activities. Requests for accommodations should be submitted to the Director of Special Education.
