LSU’s new onl ine career plat form, Handshake, launched on Apr i l 16 and prov ides LSU students and alumni wi th unparal le led access to job opportuni t ies , employer contacts , and career resources and events at a rate that far outpaces the prev ious Careers2Geaux system.
S ince the launch of Handshake, we have al ready seen a dramat ic increase in employer connect ions and job post ings for our s tudents . Our Employer Database has grown f rom 2,491 to 5 ,1 15 employers . LSU received 3 ,453 job post ings s ince the launch of Handshake, compared to the 7,495 job post ings we received in al l o f 2017-2018 in Careers2Geaux.
This decrease represents a posi t ive outcome, demonstrat ing that students are being more intent ional about their career counsel ing appointments .
14 total events across Fal l & Spr ing, including ta i lored events for n iche student populat ions and industr ies .
One-day interv iew events for targeted populat ions, of fer ing students the opportuni ty to s ign up in advance or on the day-of.

2017-2018 brought a var ie ty o f exc i t ing co l laborat ion and synergy between the Col lege of Agr icu l ture and the LSU Ol inde Career Center. In the Fa l l , Career - readiness programming was in tegrated in to academic and s tudent l i fe for cur rent and prospect ive s tudents through presentat ions in An imal Da i ry Sc ience and Text i les courses , and ta i lored presentat ions for the Col lege of Agr icu l ture Student Assoc ia t ion , the 4-H Career Prep Contest and T iger Careers Day. Career Center awareness among s tudents was increased through Snowbal ls w i th the Deans and Burger Bash . In suppor t o f in ternsh ip oppor tun i t ies , the career center par t ic ipated in in i t ia t ives wi th Ser San Anton io and Sanderson Farms. The Fa l l semester f in ished wi th increased employer and s tudent a t tendance at the Agr icu l ture Career Fa i r, and co l laborat ions for the Career Prep Week events Company Premiere Night and Et iquet te Dinner.
The Spr ing semester brought career in tegrat ion for ANSC 4092 Animal Sc ience Seminar courses , prov id ing an overv iew of the LSU Ol inde Career Center wi th emphas is on Job Search s t ra teg ies . Career development was embedded in the Area IV FFA Leadersh ip Development Event where s tudents were eva luated and g iven feedback fo l lowing mock in terv iews. P lans for co l laborat ion in suppor t o f the summer AgCLASSIC workshops are a lso underway, conf i rming the susta ined and successfu l par tner -sh ip the Col lege of Agr icu l ture and the LSU Ol inde Career Center en joy.

The Spr ing 2018 Ar t + Des ign Career Network ing Day a l lowed s tudents to network and in terv iew wi th employers recru i t ing for fu l l - t ime, par t - t ime and in ternsh ip pos i t ions in the ar t and des ign f ie lds . Th is year ’s event saw an increase in s tudent a t tendance, w i th a to ta l o f 132 s tudents a t tending , 44 of whom were graduate s tudents . Dur ing the morn ing network ing por t ion , employers educated s tudents on the oppor tun i t ies ava i lab le wi th in the i r organ izat ion and many of them s tayed to conduct a f ternoon in terv iews. A jo in t communicat ion s t ra tegy was used to promote th is event , inc lud ing graphics wi th Col lege and Career Center branding p laced in numerous communicat ion channels across both depar tments . Addi t iona l ly, a Career Center Career Peer conducted mul t ip le c lassroom presentat ions wi th in jun ior and sen ior courses in the co l lege. Th is a l lowed for in format ion shar ing , quest ion ask ing and overa l l event preparat ion by s tudents .

impact2017-18 proved to be a successfu l f i rs t fu l l year of in tegrat ion between the E .J. Ourso Col lege of Bus iness and the LSU Ol inde Career Center. In the Fa l l , Er in met wi th each Department Chai r, Facul ty Advisor, and Internship Coordinator to assess needs and establ ish rapport . In i t ia t ives grew f rom these d iscuss ions , inc luding a co l laborat ion wi th the Department of F inance to s t reaml ine the Resume Book Process us ing Careers2Geaux. In the f i rs t semester of th is new in i t ia t ive, s tudent ’s resumes were v iewed over 415 t imes by 60 employers . A new event , Opportuni ty Knocks ! a lso saw great support f rom the col lege and an impress ive turnout of 42 employers . In promot ion of Fa l l and Spr ing career events , Er in and other Career Center representat ives spoke in over 40 bus iness courses . From these c lassroom interact ions and improved communicat ions in i t ia t ives f rom the Col lege and the Career Center, a t tendance at Day 2 of the Fa l l Career Expo saw an increase in s tudent at tendance. Var ious facul ty members a lso integrated Resume Submiss ions and Career Expo at tendance into thei r sy l lab i for credi t . In the Spr ing, OBSS, the Internship Manager, and Er in worked c losely to organize a week of career events , inc luding a panel , network ing event , L inkedIn photo booth , and resume rev iew. Er in worked c losely wi th the Of f ice of Bus iness Student Success (OBSS) to increase employer representat ion on the newly launched Handshake system, and through informat ion sess ions and table s i ts . Er in was a lso in i t ia ted into the Alpha Kappa Ps i Profess ional Bus iness Fratern i ty s tudents as a Facul ty member in the Beta Chi Chapter in la te November.

The Why Women Choose Engineer ing Majors panel sought to educate female pre-STEM students on the Col lege of Engineer ing majors and assoc ia ted career paths . Careers on the Geaux a l lowed s tudents to hear f rom Veloc i ty Squared over lunch on campus, fo l lowed by s i te v is i ts to IBM and IWD Agency. In ternsh ips & Co-ops 101 taught s tudents the benef i ts o f exper ient ia l learn ing and how to pursue these oppor tun i t ies . The Engineer Your Career workshop a l lowed s tudents to learn about the Career Readiness process , the Nat iona l Assoc ia t ion of Col lege and Employers (NACE) Career Readiness Competenc ies , and how to prepare for Career Expo. A workshop was a lso of fered to Academic Counselors to ra ise awareness of LSU Ol inde Career Center resources and serv ices .

In co l laborat ion wi th Dr. Ann Mar t in , career resources were in fused in to a l l fa l l Engl ish Dual Enro l lment courses wi th in 17 h igh schools throughout the s ta te, as wel l as Engl ish 2000 courses . Addi t iona l ly, career presentat ions and resources were prov ided to severa l on-campus Engl ish 1001 courses . In to ta l , 82 s tudents par t ic ipated in the Fa l l and Spr ing Get In to Grad School ser ies , and a personal s ta tement workshop was g iven dur ing Geaux Pre-Law Week.
Communicat ion was key in launch ing a new event geared toward l ibera l a r ts and bus iness s tudents in the Spr ing – Oppor tun i ty Knocks ! The event was a success , boast ing 131 s tudents and an impress ive 42 employers . A Lunch and Learn workshop on “How to Work a Career Fa i r ” was of fered to prepare s tudents for Oppor tun i ty Knocks ! Career Fa i r. Col laborat ion wi th the Engl ish Depar tment ’s Careers in Engl ish spr ing event a t t rac ted 38 s tudents , and presentat ions were g iven in var ious H&SS c lasses and to s tudent organizat ions .

Network ing Night at Manship, an annual event , saw an increase in at tendance as wel l as an increase in qual i ty of exper ience as reported by both s tudents and employers . Th is event a l lows students to network wi th employers f rom a var iety of f ie lds that Manship graduates pursue, inc luding Journal ism, Dig i ta l Advert is ing, Pol i t ica l Communicat ions and Publ ic Relat ions .
A new in i t ia t ive, the Network ing & Resume Workshop, was of fered pr ior to Network ing Night at Manship to prepare s tudents on how to make the most of a network ing event , inc luding best pract ices for resume preparat ion.

HEALTH PROFESSIONS’ FAIR
Fal l 2017 began by ident i fy ing new and innovat ive ways to reach out to Col lege of Sc ience s tudents . Col laborat ion brought a p i lo t presentat ion a t the Exper ience LSU forums dur ing the Col lege of Sc ience breakout . The in format ion prov ided to the co l lege he lped counselors educate potent ia l and cur rent s tudents on areas in which Sc ience s tudents go to work post -graduat ion . The LSU Ol inde Career Center cont inues to work wi th the co l lege to prov ide serv ices for pre-hea l th s tudents and those who dec ide to pursue other opt ions . Dr. Sher i Wischusen has been explor ing ideas wi th the Career Center to create resources spec i f ica l ly for these s tudents . In addi t ion , Career Center s ta f f presented to B IOS on ways to seek Career Center ass is tance when d iscern ing careers . We are happy to repor t that the 2017 annual Heal th Profess ions Fa i r saw a banner number o f recru i ters . Wi th the launch of Handshake, job post ings for Col lege of Sc ience majors has increased f rom 277 in 2016- 17 to 2 ,519 in 2017- 18 !
Moving forward , the Ol inde Career Center wi l l cont inue to work wi th the Dean, Ass is tant Dean, facu l ty, and s ta f f to determine the best next s teps for career ass ignments and addi t iona l ways to engage s tudents . Th is inc ludes developing and shar ing “career p ick l i s ts” for facu l ty, work ing to enhance “career” on the Col lege’s webs i te , developing handouts for B io logy s tudents - d iscuss ing the power o f the i r degree, and tab le s i ts w i th LSU Ol inde Career Center Career Peers in the L i fe Sc iences Bu i ld ing .

The col laborat ive ef for ts between Univers i ty Col lege (UC) and the LSU Ol inde Career Center (OCC) have enhanced program part ic ipat ion and v is ib i l i ty across campus in 2017-18 . Dur ing the f i rs t two weeks of the Fa l l semester, the OCC’s Career Decis ion-Making (CDM) team set up an in format ion table in the lobby of the Center for Freshman Year wi th s taf f ava i lab le dur ing key hours .
Addi t ional ly, a co l laborat ive career exploratory workshop, t i t led Major Miners workshop, of fered students seven sess ions in the Fa l l and two sess ions in the Spr ing for s tudents to explore var ious career opt ions . Tota l par t ic ipat ion in th is workshop increased f rom zero in Fa l l 2016 to 41 in Fa l l 2017 and f rom four in Spr ing 2017 to 10 in Spr ing 2018.
CDM staf f prov ided an interact ive TypeFocus sess ion wi th the Career Discovery Res ident ia l Col lege students in the Fa l l and a resume’ workshop in the Spr ing. Spr ing. Engl ish inst ructors ( 1001 and 2000) in the Spr ing were inv i ted to a l low the OCC to prov ide an int roductory presentat ion of our serv ices in thei r courses ; n ine presentat ions were g iven. CDM staf f par tnered wi th UC in the Spr ing to co- lecture dur ing two Dest inat ion LSU admiss ions events , co-present at Admit ted Students Day, and co-present to Spr ing Inv i tat ional s tudents and parents .
F ina l ly, wi th the launch of Handshake, LSU’s new onl ine career system replac ing Careers2Geaux, a table s i t in UCFY and UCAC lobbies helped to ra ise career awareness toward the end of the Spr ing semester. CDM staf f a lso prov ided t ra in ing on Handshake to UCFY, UCAC and Student Support Serv ices s taf f.
