2017-18 MARYLAND BASKETBALL

Mark Turgeon is entering his seventh season at the helm of the University of Maryland men’s basketball team after leading the Terrapins to their third consecutive NCAA Tournament. Turgeon, who has won 24 or more games in four different seasons with the Terrapins, owns a 388-227

(.631) overall record in 19 seasons as a Division I head coach. He has led three different programs to 12 postseason appearances, which includes the Terps advancing to their first Sweet 16 in 13 years in the 2015-2016 season. Turgeon signed a four-year contract extension through the 2022-23 season on Oct. 27, 2016.

In his first six seasons at Maryland, Turgeon has compiled a 138-67 (.673) record. He recorded the most wins for a head coach in his first five years in program history (114). Turgeon has won 79 games the past three seasons, adding up to the second-most wins in school history over a three-year span. He is the first coach in Maryland history to lead the Terps to three 24-plus regular season-win seasons. Turgeon also had the Terrapins ranked in the Associated Press top-25 for 36 consecutive weeks, including 20 weeks in the top-10. Maryland had previously not been ranked in the top-10 since Feb. 3, 2003, a span of 12 seasons.

Under Turgeon, Maryland has also thrived in its first three seasons as members of the Big Ten Conference, earning three top-3 finishes and compiling a 38-16 (.703) conference record. Turgeon’s teams boast a 22-5 home record in conference play, including a perfect 9-0 mark in its inaugural season. He was named the 2015 Big Ten Coach of the Year.

Since taking over the program in 2011-12, Turgeon’s Terrapins have amassed a 90-18 (.83.3) home record overall, marking the best home winning percentage by a coach in school history. Under his direction, Maryland recorded the most consecutive wins at home in program history (27) from Dec. 6, 2015 - Feb. 13, 2016.

Turgeon has led the Terrapins to a 30-11 record through their first 41 Big Ten games, becoming the fastest Big Ten coach to reach 30 conference wins since former Illinois mentor Bruce Weber guided the Illini to 30 victories in his first 35 conference games at the helm during the 2003-04 and 2004-05 campaigns and the first three conference games of the 2005-06 season.

Turgeon has led his teams to a winning season in 16 of his 19 seasons, including a current streak of 15 consecutive winning seasons. The Terps won 27 or more games in back-to-back seasons for the first time in program history during the 2014-15 and 2015-16 campaigns.

In 2016-17, Turgeon led Maryland to a 24-9 record, an impressive 11-2 mark away from XFINITY Center and its aforementioned third consecutive trip to the NCAA Tournament. With a 20-2 record through 22 games in 2016-17, Turgeon topped the 1998-99 squad for the best regular season start in program history. Additionally, Turgeon was instrumental in the development of three-time All-Big Ten guard Melo Trimble, who became one of just four players to post 1,600 points, 400 assists and 150 steals at Maryland.

Under Turgeon’s direction the 2015-16 team finished with 27 victories and opened the regular season with a 15-1 record – the best start in program history. Maryland featured five All-Big Ten performers, including guard Melo Trimble (Second Team All-Big Ten) who was also named to the Associated Press Honorable Mention All-America Team. Center Diamond Stone was a Third Team All-Big Ten selection and was named Associated Press Big Ten Newcomer of the Year. Forwards Jake Layman and Robert Carter, Jr., as well as guard Rasheed Sulaimon each earned Honorable Mention All-Big Ten honors.

Maryland posted victories over five teams that advanced to the 2016 NCAA Tournament. In addition, the Terrapins also defeated rival Georgetown in a monumental game played on the College Park campus for the first time in four decades.

MARK TURGEON388-227 (20TH SEASON) / 138-68 (7TH SEASON AT MARYLAND)

Maryland, ranked No. 18 in the Associated Press and No. 12 in the USA Today/ESPN Coaches poll, finished 27-9, marking the first time in program history the Terps have put together back-to-back 27-plus win seasons. Maryland’s 4-0 start in conference play marked the best start since 1996-97.

The Terrapins also led the Big Ten and ranked fifth nationally in attendance in 2015-16, averaging 17,863 fans per game.

Maryland posted a school-record 26 wins during the regular season in 2014-15 and notched 28 total, an eight-game improvement from its 17 victories during the 2013-14 season. The 11-game win total was the second-highest improvement among all Power Five schools. Maryland also advanced to the third round of the NCAA Tournament.

The Terps finished their inaugural season in the Big Ten with an aforementioned 9-0 home record, which included victories against then-No. 5 Wisconsin, Michigan State and Indiana. Overall, Maryland concluded with an 18-1 home mark at XFINITY Center.

Maryland’s 14-1 record in 2014-15 marked its best start in 18 years (1996-97). Turgeon posted 25 or more wins in a season for the fourth time in his career.

Since arriving in College Park, Turgeon has signed five consecutive nationally-ranked recruiting classes, including a top-10 class in 2016. He played a lead role in signing center Diamond Stone (Milwaukee, Wisc.) – a McDonald’s All-American who was one of the highest-rated recruits to sign with the Terps in program history.

Under Turgeon, the men’s basketball team posted its highest single year APR score of a perfect 1,000 in 2012-13 and has also graduated all 11 of his student-athletes who have exhausted their eligibility at Maryland.

In 2013, he captured his 300th career victory with an 85-74 defeat of Tulsa on Dec. 29, before leading the Terps to a thrilling overtime win against No. 5 Virginia in Maryland’s final ACC regular season game.

Turgeon’s winning percentage of .600 (42-28) was the best mark by a Maryland coach in his first two seasons, ahead of Bud Millikan (.592) and Gary Williams (.574). After bringing in a top-15 recruiting class in 2012, he led the Terrapins to a 25-13 record (most wins in six seasons) and appearances in the ACC Tournament semifinals and the NIT semifinals in 2012-13.

Turgeon directed Maryland to three wins over a ranked team in 2012-13 after Maryland had gone two seasons without one. The Terps were the only team in the nation to beat Duke twice, while also knocking off then-14th ranked NC State at home in January. Maryland’s win over Duke at home on Feb. 16 was its first over a No. 1 ranked opponent in five years.

Turgeon, who came to College Park after directing Texas A&M to four consecutive appearances in the NCAA Tournament, led Maryland to a 17-15 record in 2011-12. At A&M, he posted a 97-40 record in four seasons and was named the Big 12 Conference Coach of the Year in both 2010 and 2011. He is the only coach in Big 12 history with at least 24 victories in each of his four seasons.

In seven years at Wichita State, he built the Shockers into a power in the Missouri Valley Conference, earning the league title and an NCAA Sweet Sixteen appearance in 2006. In that NCAA Tournament, Wichita State beat Seton Hall and Tennessee before losing to eventual Final Four participant George Mason.

Turgeon has developed eight former players into the NBA: Gal Mekel (formerly of the Dallas Mavericks and New Orleans Pelicans), Donald Sloan (Washington Wizards), Khris Middleton (Milwaukee Bucks), DeAndre Jordan (Los Angeles Clippers), Alex Len (Phoenix Suns), Jake Layman (Portland Trailblazers), Diamond Stone (Chicago Bulls) and Melo Trimble (Minnesota Timberwolves). Len was selected in the first round (fifth overall) by the Suns in the 2013 NBA Draft while Stone and Layman were both picked up in the second round of the 2016 NBA Draft. In addition, Dez Wells (Oklahoma City Blue) and Rasheed Sulaimon (Greensboro Swarm) played in the NBA D-League in 2016-17.

Turgeon amassed a 128-89 record at Wichita State (2000-07), posting the third-most wins in school history. The Shockers advanced to three straight NITs from 2003 to 2005 in addition to the 2006 NCAAs, the first time WSU had four straight postseason

appearances in 40 years. He began his head-coaching career at Jacksonville State, going

17-11 in his final season there (1999-2000) after going 8-18 in his first year.

Turgeon was an assistant at Kansas for five seasons, first under Larry Brown (1987-88) and then under Roy Williams (1988-92). The Jayhawks made the NCAA Tournament in four of those seasons, winning the national championship in 1988 and finishing second in 1991. KU also won Big Eight titles in 1991 and 1992 with Turgeon on staff.

He was the top assistant under Jerry Green at Oregon from 1992-97 and was an assistant coach under Brown with the Philadelphia 76ers in 1997-98 before taking the head coaching position at Jacksonville State.

A point guard at Kansas from 1984-87, Turgeon was the first player in Jayhawks history to play in four straight NCAA Tournaments. KU went 108-33 under Brown in that stretch. Turgeon served as team captain in his junior and senior seasons, leading the Jayhawks to the 1986 NCAA Final Four.

As a student-athlete, he was selected to the Big Eight All-Academic Team in 1986 and was a Big Eight All-Freshman pick in 1984. He earned a bachelor of science degree in personnel administration from Kansas in 1987.

A native of Topeka, Kan., Turgeon led Hayden High School to back-to-back Class 4A state titles in 1982 and 1983, earning all-tournament honors each year. A first team all-state pick as a senior, Hayden went 47-3 in his high-school career.

In the summer of 2008, Turgeon was inducted into the Topeka Sports Hall of Fame. He was also honored as the 2015 Kansan of the Year in June, 2015.

Additionally, Turgeon was selected as a court coach for the USA Basketball Pan-American Team in preparation for the Pan-Am Games in the summer of 2015. The following year, Turgeon served as an assistant coach for USA Basketball’s Under 18 Team, working with head coach Shaka Smart and assistant coach Kevin Ollie, in helping guide the squad to a gold medal. On June 13, 2016, he was named to the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) ad hoc committee on NCAA men’s basketball tournament selection, seeding and bracketing.

Turgeon is active in the College Park community and has hosted the Coaches vs. Cancer Season Tip-Off Breakfast in conjunction with the American Cancer Society and the National Association of Basketball Coaches for five years. Over the past three seasons, Turgeon worked with the Infiniti Coaches Charity Challenge to raise money and awareness for the Alzheimer’s Association. In addition, Turgeon and his team worked with the Special Olympics of Maryland and hosted a basketball clinic for athletes in the organization along with inviting them to home games during the 2015-16 and 2016-17 seasons. Turgeon also participated in the Special Olympics Relay Across America carrying the Flame for Hope through the College Park campus in 2016.

Turgeon (“TURGE-in”) is married to the former Ann Fowler of Chicago, Ill, and they have two sons - William (Will) and Leo - and a daughter, Ella.

DUSTIN CLARKASSISTANT COACH7TH YEAR AT MARYLANDTEXAS A&M ‘07

Dustin Clark is entering his seventh year with the Maryland men’s basketball program and was promoted to assistant coach on Mark Turgeon’s staff on November 27, 2013. He previously served as Mary-land’s director of basketball operations during his first two seasons at College Park.

As a key member of the Terps’ coaching staff in 2014-15, Clark led Maryland to a school record 26 regular season wins in its inaugural season in the Big Ten and an appearance in the NCAA Tourna-ment. The following season (2015-16), Clark played an instrumental role in the Terps capturing 27 wins as Maryland advanced to the Sweet 16 for the first time in 13 seasons.

During his tenure, Maryland has won 138 games, marking the most victories for a coaching staff in their first six years in program history. The Terps have won 79 games the past three seasons, adding up to the second-most wins in school history over a three-year span. Clark has helped lead the Terps to three 24-plus regular season-win seasons, while the Terrapins were also ranked in the Associated Press top-25 for 36 consecutive weeks, including 20 weeks in the top-10.

“Dustin has been an integral member of my staff at both Maryland and Texas A&M,” Turgeon said. “He is a tireless worker on the recruiting trail and a talented coach who has thrived as an assistant coach and has helped our program continue its ascension to the next level.”

As an assistant coach with the Terps, Clark has played a major role in Maryland securing five straight Top 25 recruiting classes, including a pair of Top 10 classes (2014 and 2016).

The energetic Clark led the recruiting efforts for guard Dion Wiley, ranked No. 52 in the nation and third-best recruit out of the state of Maryland and forward Michal Cekovsky, who was a four-star recruit on multiple national websites.

Clark signed guard Jaylen Brantley, ranked the 12th-best JUCO player in America by Next Up Re-cruits in 2014. In addition, Clark signed Richaud Pack, who provided strong leadership and a defensive presence for the Terps in 2014-15.

Most recently, he oversaw the recruitment of a pair of four-star 2016 recruits: guard Kevin Huerter, ranked 40th overall prospect by ESPN and a member of the USA Basketball U18 and U19 teams and guard Anthony Cowan, ranked No. 45 overall prospect by Rivals and the Washington Post All-Met Sports Player of the Year.

In 2016, Clark also recruited Joshua Tomaic,a member of the U18 Spanish National Team and the first Canary Islands prospect to sign with a top 25 Division I program in the United States.

Additionally, Clark played a pivotal role in recruiting graduate transfer Rasheed Sulaimon, who joined the Terps in his final collegiate season and made an immediate impact in College Park, averag-ing 11.3 points and 3.5 assists per game in 2015-16. After the Terps’ success with Sulaimon, Clark recently directed the recruitment of L.G. Gill - a graduate transfer from Duquesne who was a produc-tive player during his three seasons with the Dukes. Gill helped the Terps make their third consecutive NCAA Appearance in 2017.

On the court, Clark helped tutor a trio of All-Big Ten performers in guard/forward Dez Wells (first team/ coaches), guard Melo Trimble (first team/media) and forward Jake Layman (third team/media) in 2014-15. The following season (2015-16), Clark helped Trimble (second team), center Diamond Stone (third team) and Robert Carter Jr., Layman and Sulaimon (honorable mention) each earn All-Big Ten honors. In June 2016, Stone and Layman were selected in the second round in the NBA Draft. Stone was tabbed 40th overall by the Los Angeles Clippers and curently plays with the Chicago Bulls. Layman was selected 47th overall by the Orlando Magic (with rights being traded to the Portland Trail Blazers).

Clark spent five seasons with the Texas A&M basketball program. After serving as an athletics as-sistant for three years, he was the team administrator in the 2010-11 season. During his five seasons, the Aggies won 124 games, produced three NBA draft picks and had Turgeon earn back-to-back Big 12 Coach of the Year honors. Clark helped develop Khris Middleton (Milwaukee Bucks), DeAndre Jordan (Los Angeles Clippers) and Donald Sloan (formerly of the Brooklyn Nets).

His duties included on-campus recruiting, coordination of recruiting correspondence, academic quality control and student-athlete affairs. Clark was the director of the Mark Turgeon Basketball Camp, as well as a coordinator for the Texas A&M Elite and Junior Elite camps. He also played a key role in helping the Aggies land multiple nationally ranked recruiting classes. In addition, he was instrumental in securing a pair of top 100 players; Tobi Oyedeji (Houston, Texas) and Jamal Branch (Arlington, Texas).

In 2008, the Aggies won the Preseason NIT and reached the second round of the NCAA Tourna-ment where they lost in the closing seconds to top-seeded UCLA. A&M closed the next regular season on a six-game winning streak and again reached the second round of the NCAA Tournament.

In 2010, Texas A&M reached the second round of the NCAA Tournament despite playing the sec-ond-toughest schedule in the nation. A year ago, the Aggies exploded to a 16-1 start, the best at the school in 91 years and earned its sixth consecutive NCAA Tournament bid.

A native of Waxahachie, Texas, Clark received his degree from Texas A&M in 2007. Clark gradu-ated from Avalon High School, where he was a four-year letterman in both basketball and baseball.

ORLANDO ‘BINO’ RANSONASSISTANT COACH8TH YEAR AT MARYLANDSOUTHERN NEW HAMPSHIRE ‘99

Orlando “Bino” Ranson was hired as an assistant coach at Maryland in the summer of 2010 and is now entering his eighth season in College

Park, including the seventh on the staff of head coach Mark Turgeon. During his time with Turgeon, Ranson and the Terps have collected 114 wins, the most in a five-year span in program history.

Ranson played a major part in helping lead the Terps to three consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances, including a berth in the Sweet Sixteen during the 2015-16 season. It marked the Terps’ longest run in the NCAA Tournament since 2003. In the 2015-16 season, Maryland started 15-1 – the best start in program history and finished the campaign with a 27-9 overall record No. 12 ranking in the USA Today Coaches Poll.

“Bino has done an outstanding job in identifying and developing talented basketball players,” said Turgeon. “He has strong connections throughout the country and helped expand our recruiting area during our transition to the Big Ten. Bino has worked hard and has developed into a very good coach.”

The Terps have won 79 games the past three seasons, adding up to the second-most wins in school history over a three-year span. Ranson has helped lead the Terps to three 24-plus regular season-win seasons, while the Terrapins were also ranked in the Associated Press top-25 for 36 consecutive weeks, including 20 weeks in the top-10.

In their inaugural season in the Big Ten (2014-15), Ranson and the Terrapins posted a school record 26 regular season wins en route to advancing to the NCAA Tournament.

Ranson played a major role in helping Maryland sign five consecutive top-25 recruiting classes in 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015 and 2016. He played a lead role in signing center Diamond Stone (Milwaukee, Wisc.) – a McDonald’s All-American who was rated as a consensus top 10 player by a myriad of national recruiting services. Stone went on to be drafted by the Los Angeles Clippers in the second round of the 2016 NBA Draft and currently plays for the Chicago Bulls. In addition, Ranson directed the recruiting efforts for Darryl Morsell, a four-star recruit out of Mount Saint Joseph’s High School in Baltimore.

In 2016, Ranson led the recruiting efforts for consensus four-star forward Justin Jackson, who played high school basketball at national power Findlay Prep as a junior before finishing his high school career at Hill Academy in Ontario, where he was named a First Team All-Star in the Ontario Scholastics Basketball Association. He was also a member of the Canadian U-19 national team that participated at the 2015 FIBA World Championships in Greece.

Ranson has strong ties to the Baltimore-Washington area, having coached for two seasons at St. Frances Academy in Baltimore.

He came to Maryland after one season as an assistant at Xavier, during which the Musketeers went 26-9 and reached the NCAA Sweet Sixteen. In his lone season on the staff of Maryland head coach Gary Williams in 2010-11, the Terrapins went 19-14. Ranson has had a winning season in each of his 11 seasons as an assistant coach.

He spent two years as an administrative assistant at Loyola University on the staff of long-time Maryland assistant and current Siena head coach Jimmy Patsos.

Prior to Xavier, Ranson was an assistant coach at James Madison for one season, helping the Dukes to a 21-15 mark, the most wins by JMU in a season since 1992-93. The Dukes advanced in the Colonial Athletic Association Tournament for the first time since 2003 and their berth in the College Insiders.com Tournament marked their first postseason appearance since 1994.

Ranson also worked for Matt Brady at Marist University for three seasons. The Red Foxes were 62-33 in those three seasons and won the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference regular season in 2007. That season, Marist won at Oklahoma State in the Postseason NIT.

Considered an outstanding recruiter, he helped bring in excellent classes at James Madison, Marist and Xavier. Ranson helped land Jay Gavin at Marist, who went on to become the MAAC Rookie of the Year.

Ranson coached at St. Frances Academy for two seasons before joining the Loyola staff. He handled St. Frances’ junior-varsity program, directing the 2003-04 team to a 24-5 record, titles in the MIAA and the Baltimore Catholic League. He also founded Team Baltimore, one of the top AAU programs in the Northeast.

Among the players Ranson worked with at the AAU level are Sean Mosley and Juan Dixon of Mary-land, Ricky Harris of Massachusetts, Jermaine Dixon of Pittsburgh and Donte Greene of Syracuse.

A 1999 graduate of Southern New Hampshire with a B.S. in sports management, Ranson com-pleted his collegiate career as one of the top players in the history of the school. He ranked seventh in career scoring (1,899 points), fifth in assists (598) and fourth in 3-point field goals (226) after lettering for four seasons. He was inducted into the school’s hall of fame in January 2007.

Ranson and his wife, Shannon, have two sons; BJ and Bradshaw.

MATT BRADYDIR. OF PLAYER PERSONNEL1ST YEAR AT MARYLANDSIENA ‘87

Head coach Mark Turgeon announced the addition of Matt Brady today as the director of player personnel for the Maryland men’s basketball program on July 10, 2017. Brady, who has nearly 30 years of experience as a coach at

the Division I level, including 12 as a head coach, comes to Maryland after serving as an assistant coach at La Salle the past season. Brady will be reunited with Maryland assistant coach Bino Ranson, who was an assistant under Brady while at Marist. ‘’Matt is a very accomplished head coach and assistant who under his leadership and direction led various basketball programs to unprecedented heights during his tenure,” Tur-geon said. “His proven track record in player development and his experience as a head coach at the Division I level will greatly benefit our staff and student-athletes. Matt will make a seamless transition to our staff and we are very excited to welcome him to our basketball program.” Prior to La Salle, Brady was the head coach at James Madison for eight seasons, racking up 139 wins, including four seasons with 20 or more victories. In 2013, he led the Dukes to a CAA Championship and an NCAA Tournament bid. He also guided the Dukes to three additional postseason appearances and the 2015 CAA regular season title. Brady was recognized as State Coach of the Year by the Virginia Sports Information Directors in 2013 following his NCAA Tournament campaign and was also tabbed District 10 Co-Coach of the Year by the National Association of Basketball Coaches. Brady inherited a JMU program that finished last in the conference in scoring, field goal and three-point percentage in 2007. The following season, Brady had the Dukes atop the conference in all three statistical categories. While at JMU, Brady coached 10 all-CAA play-ers and four all-district honorees. Brady mentored three of the top 10 scorers in program history as well as three of the top 10 three-point shooters. Prior to leading the program at James Madison, Brady was the head coach at Marist for four seasons from 2004-08 where compiled a 73-50 record with the Red Foxes and improved their win total during each of his first three seasons with the team. Marist set a program record for wins during its 25-9 season in 2006-07 when Brady was the MAAC and New York City-area coach of the year. Marist had dramatic statistical improvements under his direction, ranking in the top three in the 10-team MAAC in overall field goal percentage, three-point percentage and three-pointers per game during each of his four seasons. While at Marist, Brady mentored MAAC Player of the Year Jared Jordan, who was a two-time NCAA Division I assists champion and the 45th overall choice in the NBA draft by the Los Angeles Clippers. A 1987 Siena graduate and a native of Haddon Heights, N.J., Brady was a Division I assistant coach for 17 seasons at Rhode Island (1987-89), Wagner (1989-93) and Saint Joseph’s (1993-04). While Brady was at Saint Joseph’s, the Hawks appeared in the NCAA Tournament four times, the NIT three times and won four Big 5 championships and three Atlantic 10 titles. Saint Joseph’s was 27-0 during the regular season in 2003-04, earned a No. 1 national ranking and a No. 1 seed for the NCAA Tournament, ultimately reaching the Elite Eight. Brady was involved in recruiting several of the top players in Saint Joseph’s history, including 2004 National Player of the Year Jameer Nelson and Delonte West, an honorable mention Associated Press All-America selection. Nelson, who was selected in the first round of the 2004 NBA Draft and has gone on to play 12 seasons in the NBA, continues to be mentored and trained by Brady during his offseason. As a player at Siena, Brady appeared in 114 career games, including 92 as a starter. He completed his career as the program’s all-time assists leader (593), and he was inducted into the school’s hall of fame in 1993. For his career he accumulated 1,106 points (9.7 points per game) and was a 45.9 percent shooter from the field. Brady was a standout at Paul VI High School in Haddon (N.J.) Township and was named to the 1980s South Jersey All-Decade Team. He was enshrined in the Camden County Sports Hall of Fame in 2012.

Super Sophomores: Maryland’s sophomore trio of Anthony Cowan (pictured below), Kevin Huerter and Justin Jackson (pictured above) will return to lead the Terps after a breakout rookie campaign in 2016-17. The then-freshmen immediately made an impact, accounting for over 40% of Maryland’s points per game (40.7%), rebounds per game (41.7%) and assists per game (51%) for the season. The trio combined to make 96 starts, while Cowan, Huerter or Jackson led the Terps in scoring in 10 different games last season.

Tournament Terps: Maryland has won four consecutive non-conference tournaments dating back to the 2013-14 season. Last season, the Terps (pictured above) captured the Barclay’s Classic title in thrilling fashion, beating Kansas State in the final seconds 69-68 to remain unbeaten at the time. Maryland’s non-conference tournament triumphs have bred NCAA Tournament success as well, as Maryland has advanced to three straight.

2017-18 MARYLAND BASKETBALL

SEASON OUTLOOKIt’s a new year for Maryland, with a set of emerging sophomores ready

to play even more prominent roles after the Terrapins earned their third consecutive NCAA tournament bid last year.

Maryland tied for second in the Big Ten regular season, and while inju-ries proved to be an issue once March arrived, it was a season that coach Mark Turgeon believes will serve his program well as it moved forward.

“We were not that far off,” Turgeon says. “Our experience will help us. We’ve added some pieces that fit in well. Each year is different. We’re go-ing to have to be good early with the league games in December. I’d like to think we’ll be a little more consistent throughout. But I was proud of last year. They did an amazing job.”

The biggest change this year is the departure of guard Melo Trimble, a three-year mainstay who played a vital role in Maryland re-establishing itself as perennial NCAA tournament team.

While his ball-handling and knack for getting to the foul line were his obvious strengths, he was always a top option to take the tough shots down the stretch of games. Who becomes the go-to guy for the Terps?

The answer might be a lot of players, with returning starters Anthony Cowan, Kevin Huerter and Justin Jackson all among the players set for prominent roles on this year’s team.

“We have plenty of guys who will step into that role, whether it’s Antho-ny, Kevin, Justin, a Dion Wiley, a Michal Cekovsky,” Turgeon says. “That’s going to be the biggest adjustment. I think it’ll be a natural progression for this team to step up and make plays later in games.”

Cowan should have the ball in his hands even more as a sophomore after starting all 33 games in his debut season. He averaged 10.3 points last year and led the team in assists, exceeding plenty of expectations along the way.

A superb offseason will only help Cowan’s all-around game, and the knowledge of having navigated the Big Ten in his first year ensures the Terps will have one of their savvier guards in the league bringing the ball up the floor.

Another player due for a second-year leap might be Huerter, who added more than 10 pounds of muscle since the end of last season. Maryland’s leader in made 3-pointers last season (65), Huerter will bring a more well-rounded game into sophomore year and provide the Terps with greater play-making ability.

After plugging Jackson in at the four last year, Turgeon plans to use the 6-7 Toronto native on the wing with regularity. Jackson averaged 10.5 points and a team-high 6.0 rebounds last year, prompting him to explore his NBA prospects before opting to remain in College Park.

“It was a good experience, which should make him a better player, but I was never really that concerned,” Turgeon says. “But we’re glad he’s back. He can do a lot of things. He can play multiple positions. I wanted to play him at the wing and we just weren’t able to do it. So he’ll play more wing. He’s getting bigger and stronger, and he’ll still play stretch four for us like Jake Layman did.”

Two veterans could bolster the backcourt even more if they can regain the form they enjoyed earlier in their career. Senior Jared Nickens has de-veloped into one of the team’s most important leaders, and he can provide a positive influence on the rest of the roster while lending the benefit of experience gained from playing on three postseason teams.

An even greater wild card is Wiley. The redshirt junior missed all of 2015-16 with a torn right meniscus and was limited to 20 games last year because of a variety of injuries. Turgeon still believes Wiley can be a difference-maker in the second half of his career if he can remain healthy.

New to the backcourt is freshman Darryl Morsell, a Baltimore native who will bring toughness to the table as he tries to earn a role in the rota-

OUTLOOKtion. Morsell can play both point guard and on the wing, and his defense and rebounding are attributes that should help him secure playing time.

Junior Andrew Terrell and sophomore Travis Valmon are also back, while freshmen Reese Mona and Alex Tostado will also help provide depth in the backcourt.

There are some holes to fill in the frontcourt after the departures of Damonte Dodd and L.G. Gill, but in many ways the critical piece up front last year was Cekovsky.

Now a senior, the 7-foot-1 Cekovsky appeared in only 17 games last season. Yet Maryland was 13-4 when he played, and his .671 shooting percentage provided a vital spark before he fractured his left ankle Feb. 19.

“It was pretty obvious when Ceko went down that we weren’t the same team,” Turgeon says.

The return of a healthy Cekovsky answers plenty of questions in the post. So does an improved Ivan Bender, who missed only one game as a sophomore and should vie for even more time after shooting 66.3 percent from the floor last year.

Maryland will look for a pair of freshmen to contribute inside as well. Joshua Tomaic was part of the program last year, and Turgeon said the Canary Islands native “had one of the best redshirt years a kid has ever had.” He’s much improved over last year and should provide a lift on the inside.

So, too, should 6-10 newcomer Bruno Fernando, who at 245 pounds is physically ready to contribute immediately.

The Terps will look to graduate transfer Sean Obi to provide a boost as well. The 6-9, 250-pounder established himself as an exceptional re-bounder at Rice, collecting 9.3 boards per game as a freshman. Injuries limited his effectiveness in three years at Duke, though Turgeon believes the hard-working Obi can be an asset.

“He was a pretty good player before, and we expect him to help us, too,” Turgeon says.

There’s clear strength in the sophomore class, and experience in the frontcourt as well. Turgeon will have the luxury of a deep rotation as the season gets underway, and he’ll have a hungry roster after the disappoint-ment of falling in the first round of the NCAA tournament in March.

All of the holdovers have a chance to see their roles expand even more, and Turgeon is optimistic the group’s collective character will be a signifi-cant asset as the Terps look to extend their NCAA streak to four seasons.

“We have a great group of coachable kids, and there’s pretty good ex-perience coming back,” Turgeon says. “When you look across the board, there’s a lot of guys who played in their career here, and we’re adding some pieces that fill well. That’s what I’m excited about.”

GAMEDAY MEDIA PARKING Parking is located in various lots surrounding XFINITY Center. Media parking is best accessed from the University Drive (Rt. 193) entrance to campus at Paint Branch Drive. Access to the media parking areas are via pass only, and is available on a limited basis. All media must have parking passes before arriving on campus, so allow enough time for credential requests to be processed in order to receive them prior to gameday.

MEDIA SEATING AND MEDIA WORK ROOM The courtside media area and work room both are at the northeast corner of the arena. Both are available for work-ing media only. Working space in the media area of XFINITY Center is limited and seats are expressly reserved for those working on deadline, with no exceptions. Children and other non-workers are not allowed in the media area. Located on the court level of XFINITY Center, the work room is directly across from the men’s basketball locker room and directly behind the courtside area. They are con-nected by the tunnel area adjacent to the loading dock and service entrance on the arena’s northeast corner. The work room opens well before game time and media representatives are welcome upon arrival at the arena.

TELEPHONES AND INTERNET Some complimentary phone lines are available in the XFINITY Center media work room, as dictated by Big Ten policy (calling card or reverse charges required). Additional requests for dedicated lines, either for the work room or courtside, should be directed to Nick Havas, Asst. Director of Operations and Facilities, at 301-314-2234. List Zack Bolno as the contact person for all installa-tions. Wireless Internet access is free and available by con-tacting the Media Relations staff on gameday.

PHOTOGRAPHY All photographers and camera operators must remain seated in baseline photo areas, as per NCAA regulations. Locations will be assigned for all games. Photographer and videographer positions are at the complete and absolute discretion of the basketball game of-ficials and the Maryland Media Relations Office at all times, without exception. The NCAA has established a policy to control conges-tion in photography areas. Priority shall be given, in all instances, to photographers and videographers on assign-ment. Only game photographers (no runners, assistants or producers) shall have access to courtside photo areas. Strobe lights may be installed in XFINITY Center, but arrangements must be made through the Media Relations Office two weeks in advance. Space for strobe lights is available on a first-come, first-served basis.

POSTGAMEPOSTGAME NEWS CONFERENCE Postgame news conferences for both head coaches will be conducted at the conclusion of each game. Interviews will be conducted in the media work room. The opposing team will go first followed by Maryland interviews with head coach Mark Turgeon and selected student-athletes follow-ing. The Maryland locker room is closed. The visiting team’s locker room access policy is deter-mined by officials of that school.

POSTGAME STATISTICSA statistics packet including running play-by-play, first half and final box scores, and postgame notes and home and visitor head coach quotes, are compiled for each game and made available to the media at press row and in the media work room.

CREDENTIAL REQUESTS Credential requests must be made by sports editors or sports directors by emailing Zack Bolno at [email protected] no later than five days prior to an event. Credentials will be mailed whenever possible, picked up at the Athletics Media Relations Office during normal business hours, or picked up on gameday at Gate C of the XFINITY Center, located on the ground-level entrance at the south side of the building nearest the campus. Credentials will be sent for overnight delivery (via FedEx only) at the expense of the requesting outlet. All persons picking up credentials will be required to furnish positive identification.

IN-SEASON INTERVIEW POLICIES All interviews must be arranged through Zack Bolno and Keith Sneddon in the Maryland Media Relations Office. They can be reached at 301-314-1482 and via e-mail at [email protected] or [email protected]. Please give at least 24 hours notice for interview requests. Head coach Mark Turgeon and selected players are available on the day before each game for an interview session in the XFINITY Center media work room. Contact Bolno or Sneddon for times and potential player availability. Players and coaches have been instructed not to participate in interviews unless they have been arranged through the media relations office. Player phone numbers will not be released, and members of the media are not to attempt to contact student-athletes or relatives on the telephone, via e-mail or by any other means. Players are not available for live call-in radio shows.

PRACTICES Maryland practices are closed to the public. Some prac-tices may be opened to the media on an occasional basis, with prior notice coming from the Media Relations Office.

GAMEDAYINTERNET GUIDELINES The acceptance of media credentials is an acknowl-edgement of the University of Maryland’s rights to the game and play-by-play coverage and an outlet’s agreement to abide by any restrictions the University of Maryland may place on real-time play-by-play coverage and use of com-prehensive game statistics. Failure to abide by these restrictions implemented by the University of Maryland may result in revocation of press credentials. Maryland reserves the right to grant approval for distribution of real-time play-by-play, game-related sta-tistics and information through the Internet (“real time” is defined as any online media providing live continual play-by-play coverage, in-game statistics, digital photographs, or audio or video of an event).
