This marks the fifth year in a row the Ducks will open conference play against the two California schools, with both opponents ranked in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's top 15. LAST TIME OUT The Ducks found themselves in two close battles last weekend in Iowa, falling to Cornell and No. 42 Iowa by duplicate 4-2 scores. Both matches were very tight contests, starting right out of the gates in doubles play against Cornell. With both teams recording one win each, it came down to Armando Soemarno and Charles Roberts who trailed 5-4. The duo managed to fend off match point and win the next three games to clinch the point for UO. In singles play, the Big Red got the upper hand taking a 3-2 lead with Ty Gentry leading and Ethan Young-Smith heading into a third set at the No. 5 and No. 6 positions, respectively. Young-Smith would eventually fall in the third set giving Cornell the win and forcing Gentry's match to be abandoned. It was the same story different chapter against the host Hawkeyes with both teams recording one doubles win each to open the match. The point came down to a tiebreaker set at the No. 3 spot. After a long back-and forth stretch, Iowa slipped by Gentry and Simon Stevens to win the point. Iowa jumped out to a 3-0 lead in singles play, but the Ducks would not go quietly cutting into the Hawkeyes lead, 3-2. With Akihiro Tanaka heading into a third set, freshman Riki Oshima attempted to send his match into a third as well to keep UO's hopes alive. Tied 5-5 with Iowa's Will Davies, Oshima could not extend the match, falling 6-3, 7-5 at the No. 6 spot. IN THE RANKINGS The Ducks remained in the top 50 in the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association's team rankings. Despite its two losses, Oregon held steady at No. 40. Individually, Thomas Laurent kept his hold on the No. 13 spot. He is currently 9-1 this spring season, having won the last seven straight, and 17-3 overall. Laurent has played every match this season at the No. 1 spot. Laurent and Cormac Clissold dropped to 21st in the country after snapping their six-match winning streak this past weekend against Iowa. As a pair, the two are 7-3 this spring and 15-5 overall. Laurent and Clissold sit just three wins behind Robin Cambier's and Jeff Mullen's all- time career doubles wins record, with a record of 54-11. Their .818 winning percentage is currently the second-highest career doubles winning percentage in UO history. THERE'S NO PLACE LIKE HOME The Ducks will put their undefeated home streak up against some stiff competition this weekend. Following their 4-0 win over Utah State during UO's last home match, the Ducks remained undefeated at the Student Tennis Center with an 8-0 home record. In fact, Oregon has only conceded two points on its home court, both singles wins by Wisconsin. The home court advantage will greatly benefit the Ducks this weekend as both UCLA and USC have a combined 1-3 record in away matches this season. Oregon did not concede a single point in its first four home matches, opening the year with back-to-back 7-0 sweeps over Idaho and Portland State. Since then, the Ducks have had five 4-0 sweeps in their last six home matches. With 15 of 25 matches played at home this season, UO hopes to make the Student Tennis Center one of the toughest places to play. Last season, the Ducks finished the year 10-1 at home, and have a combined 51-10 record over the last five years when playing at the STC. GRAB YOUR BROOMS So far this season, the Ducks have recorded seven victories without conceding a single point. UO's single-match dominance has slowly risen since the 2010 season. In 2010, Oregon recorded three match sweeps with that number continually rising each season since, culminating in 10 perfect wins last year. With half the season still to play, UO has the opportunity to surpass that mark and raise the bar even higher. THE STREAKSophomore Ty Gentry kept his double-digit singles winning streak alive in UO's most recent match against Iowa. Despite his first match of the weekend being left unfinished, Gentry closed out the road trip with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Iowa's Jonas Larsen. The win extended his streak to 11 straight, dating back to this past fall. So far this spring, the Olympia, Wash., native, is undefeated in dual play with a 7-0 singles record, splitting tim between the No. 5 and No. 6 positions. The single-season consecutive singles match winning streak record is 18 set by Thomas Laurent last season. Overall, Gentry is UO's team-leader with a 15-2 record while Clissold is close behind at 13-2.

PARTNERS IN CRIMESenior Cormac Clissold and junior Thomas Laurent continue to climb the UO career doubles wins list. As a pair, Clissold and Laurent are 54-12 all-time, ranking them second on the UO all-time doubles wins list. They need only three more wins this season to tie the doubles pair of Robin Cambier and Jeff Mullen for the top spot. So far this year, the two Ducks are 15-5 overall, 7-3 during the spring season, winning Oregon’s first-ever ITA Northwest Regional doubles title and earning an automatic bid to the Fall National Championships.

STEVENS, CLISSOLD CONTINUE TO CLIMBIn their final seasons at Oregon, seniors Simon Stevens and Cormac Clissold have clawed their way up the UO record books. Tied for 15th at the start of the 2017-18 season, Stevens has lept into a tie for sixth thanks to a 14-7 record this season. Currently, Stevens has a 69-34 career singles record, placing him in a tie with Oded Teig. The Belgium international needs just six more wins to crack the top five on UO's all-time career singles wins list.

Clissold, who started the year just outside UO's top 15, has climbed all the way up to 11th. The Australian international has a 59-28 career record

at UO, passing his brother Aaron Clissold, as well as Alex Cornelissen, for 11th.

Both Clissold and Stevens are already among Oregon's top five most successful doubles players as well, ranking tied for second and fourth, respectively. Individually, they are right behind one another with Clissold accumulating 75 doubles wins during his career and Stevens logging 71 wins.

THAT CERTAIN JE NE SAIS QUOIFrench international Thomas Laurent entered the 2018 spring season as one of the highest ranked players in program history at sixth in the nation. Laurent is coming off a sophomore campaign in which he broke the single-season wins record with a 30-7 overall record. He continued to build on his Oregon legacy this past fall, reaching the semifinals of the ITA All-Americans and ITA Fall Nationals, both program firsts. Laurent finished the fall slate 8-2 overall in singles play with five wins over ranked opponents, including a 5-7, 6-4, 6-0 win over ninth-ranked William Bushamuka of Kentucky in the opening round of the Fall National Championships.

Midway through his junior season, Laurent is eighth on the UO all-time singles wins list with a 66-16 career record. His astonishing .805 winning percentage is currently the best career winning percentage in program history. The only other Duck with a .700 or better win percentage is Jayson Amos, whose career singles record of 93-34 (.732) ranks first on the UO all-time list.

LOOKING AHEADFollowing this weekend's Pac-12 matches, the Ducks step out of conference play to close out their five match home stand. UO welcomes Santa Clara to Eugene next Thursday, Mar. 15, for an evening match, before facing Drake and UC Santa Barbara on Mar. 24, and Mar. 26, respectively.

HEAD COACH NILS SCHYLLANDER

Oregon Experience 12th Season Oregon Record (12th year) 165-117Career Record (15th year) 223-158Alma Mater Northern Arizona (1995)

EXPERIENCE

NILS SCHYLLANDER

COACHING EXPERIENCE BY YEAR

Nils Schyllander recently completed his 11th season as head coach of the University of Oregon men’s tennis program. Schyllander has been at UO for a total of 17 years and is one of two coaches in ITA history to be named regional coach of the year for both a men’s and women’s team. He served as an assistant coach for four years and a head coach for three years with the women’s program before being named head coach of the UO men prior to the 2007 season.

Schyllander has posted a 156-113 (.580) record with the UO men and is one of only two coaches in program history (Buzz Summers, 1968-94) to reach triple figures in wins. For his career, he owns an all-time record as a head coach of 214-154 (.582) across . He earned Wilson/ITA Northwest Region Coach of the Year honors in 2014, and was the Pac-12 Coach of the Year for the 2016-17 season.

Schyllander has led Oregon’s charge to prominence as the Ducks have established themselves as a consistent contender on the national stage. The native of Sweden has led the Ducks to six straight seasons of 15 wins or better and an appearance in the NCAA Tournament in three of the last four seasons. In 2016, Oregon advanced past the first round of the NCAA Tournament for the first time in program history with a win over No. 23 Tulsa in the opening round.

Most recently, Schyllander led the 2017 Ducks to the first-ever back-to-back NCAA Tournament appearance in the history of the program, earning the honor of Pac-12 Coach of the Year in the process. For the second straight year, Oregon advanced past the opening round with a victory over No. 34 Memphis. The Ducks finished the year with a 19-7 record, tied with 2016 for the most wins under Schyllander, and recorded their best-ever Pac-12 finish in fourth. Oregon’s .731 winning percentage was also the best for the program since the 1994-95 season (.757).

The Ducks slotted within the ITA top 25 for each of the final 12 rankings of 2017, the longest streak in program history. Oregon finished the year inside the ITA top 25 for the first time ever at No. 24, and they slotted in at No. 20 in the USTA final rankings. The Ducks added to their terrific season with a win over No. 15 Stanford on April 16, matching the highest-ranked win in program history.

Schyllander has coached student-athletes to seven of the top 10 singles seasons in program history and all four of the top doubles seasons in UO history. He has also coached Oregon’s all-time winningest player, Jayson Amos, who graduated in 2017 with the program record for singles (93). Also in 2017, sophomore Thomas Laurent won 30 matches to shatter the previous UO

single-season record.

Schyllander cemented UO’s status as a growing power nationally in 2014, guiding the Ducks to their first Pac-12 Championship semifinal appearance in program history and their first NCAA Championship appearance in 10 years. The Ducks posted a 17-10 record in 2014 with six wins over nationally ranked opponents and numerous milestone victories. Among the most prestigious of those milestones was Oregon’s first ever ITA top 25 national ranking, which was achieved on March 16, 2014, with a No. 24 ranking. That climb continued through the 2015 season and into the historic 2016 campaign, as Schyllander guided his program to heights not yet attained by the Oregon Men. The 2016 Ducks went 19-8 (.704) to reach the NCAA Tournament, where they picked up their first-ever postseason win with a victory over Tulsa.

Prior to being named head coach, Schyllander was an assistant coach at Oregon for four years. Schyllander originally came to Eugene after a stint in Aliso Viejo in southern California, mentoring four nationally-ranked junior players in one and a half years. Prior to that, he served as the Advanced Junior Tennis Director for the Sam Olsen Professional Academy, coordinating the administrative aspects of the program and traveling with his players to regional and national tournaments.

A former Northern Arizona University standout, Schyllander began his collegiate coaching career with the Lumberjacks as an assistant coach at Northern Arizona University during the 1995-96 season. He coordinated the team’s recruiting and practice components, and also oversaw opponent scouting and various administrative duties.

As a player, the two-time Big Sky Conference Honorable Mention selection was also voted the team’s MVP and Northern Arizona University’s men’s athlete of the year in 1995. Prior to his arrival in Flagstaff, Ariz., Schyllander played one season at Saddleback College, receiving All-America recognition in 1993.

A native of Tessinkolan, Sweden, he graduated from high school in 1990 with an emphasis in Political Science. Afterwards, Schyllander served in the Swedish Royal Army in the Ammunition Transport Platoon through June, 1992.

Schyllander graduated from Northern Arizona with a bachelor’s degree in liberal arts and a minor in physical education.

Schyllander and his wife, Rebecca, have two daughters, Elin Elisabet (10/6/02) and Ida Eleonora (7/6/07).

OREGON ATHLETICS EXCELLENCE

DUCKS FINISH RECORD NINTH IN DIRECTOR’S CUP- The UO athletic department in 2016-17 posted its highest-ever finish for the third year in a row, taking ninth in the annual ranking of NCAA athletic departments. - Schools can count their best 20 team finishes (up to 10 women’s sports and 10 men’s sports) in an academic year, and Oregon took ninth despite fielding just 19 NCAA programs - more than a dozen fewer than top-two finishers Stanford and Ohio State. - The Ducks took ninth just a year after entering the top-10 for the first time in 2015-16, when the UO athletic department was 10th in the Directors’ Cup standings. A year earlier, Oregon was 13th, at that point its best finish ever. - The department earned 1,027 points toward the Directors’ Cup in 2016-2017, led by 300 from the women’s track and field program — 100 for each national title by the program in its historic “Triple Crown” year, the first by an NCAA women’s program. Oregon’s three national titles in 2016-17 were one fewer than Stanford and Oklahoma, and gave the Ducks multiple national championships for the fifth straight year, the longest active streak in the country.- The 100 points for the women’s NCAA Outdoor title contributed to Oregon’s 467 points during the spring, nearly half the department’s total for the year. The Ducks also got 90 points for the men’s golf team’s NCAA runner-up finish, 83 points for making the semifinals of the Women’s College World Series and 69 points for the ninth-place men’s NCAA Outdoor finish. The women’s golf team and both tennis programs also contributed points by reaching their respective postseasons.- This was the fifth year in a row UO finished in the top 15 of the standings, and the sixth in the last eight years.

WOMEN’S TRACK TRIPLE CROWNAfter winning national titles in women’s cross country, women’s indoor track and field and women’s outdoor track and field last years, the Ducks became the first women’s program in the history of the NCAA to sweep all three championships in a single academic year.

POSTSEASON APPEARANCES IN 2016-17- During the 2016-17 academic year, the Ducks sent 15 teams to the postseason, the most in school history. - In addition to the women’s track and field team sweeping all three national titles (cross country, indoor, outdoor), the Oregon men’s basketball program advanced to the Final Four, softball went to the Women’s College World Series and men’s golf, a year after winning a national title, finished as runner-up to Oklahoma. - Women’s basketball had a remarkable run to the Elite Eight in 2016-17 while men’s track and field finished third in the nation in indoor and ninth outdoors. - Volleyball, men’s cross country, women’s golf, men’s tennis and women’s tennis all qualified for their respective NCAA Tournaments. - Acrobatics and Tumbling finished second at the NCATA national tournament.

NATIONAL TITLES- Oregon owns 37 overall national championships. - 24 of those titles have come in the last 10 years (2007+).- The Ducks have won an incredible 31 NCAA titles in cross country or indoor and outdoor track and field. - Oregon won the first ever NCAA men’s basketball tournament in 1939. - The Ducks won their first men’s golf NCAA title in thrilling fashion at Eugene Country Club in 2016. Eugene native Sulman Raza won in a third playoff hole of his match play round to beat Texas. - Oregon’s 37 national titles include four NCATA national titles in acrobatics and tumbling, which is not yet considered an NCAA sport.

ACADEMIC SUCCESS- The Ducks have 101 all-time academic All-Americans.- Oregon averages 100 academic all-conference selections annually.
