Squash Report - 2017/20182017-2018 has been a

positive year for the Squash division. Membership was on a decline in 2016-17 but through a concerted effort to gain more members, the membership numbers have been steadily increasing. This is positive for the sport and with the area growing in population this growth is only expected to increase.

One area that has seen the biggest growth is the Junior division. In 2016-17 the Junior Club was being run by an external coach and facilitator. For 2017-18 club member Nigel Leakey has provided his time to run the junior division and as well as providing financial relief for the club has seen a positive increase in junior participation and membership numbers. The junior club is now running at capacity.

Congratulations to Anne Leakey and Ashlee Pepper who were both selected for Squash New Zealand development squads. For a small club like ours having 2 juniors earning national selection is an amazing achievement.

Red Beach Squash Club had 3 juniors listed in the Auckland top 10 ranking: Shevaun Green U17 ranked #8, Ashlee Pepper U15 ranked #4 and Anne Leakey U15 ranked #6.

The club has also run some very successful tournaments over the season. The Red Beach Squash Club Open Tournament on 8-11 February 2018 was arguably one of

the best in the history of the club including the strongest entries that included 8 A grade players. The final of the Men’s Open Division was between two Belmont Squash Club members, Gabe Yam (A1) and Sam Sayes (A2). Watched from a packed gallery, these two young players provided a spectacular display of skill and tenacity with Gabe taking the honours in 3 games.

The seasons junior tournament “The Double Dot Squash Junior Series” on May was also a huge success. The one-day tournament attracted over 50 entries which was great for an Auckland junior tournament and capacity for a club of our size.

Masters interclub teams continue to be the primary entries for the season’s interclub draws. The teams have done well and the club has picked up two pennants throughout the year.

The introduction of a Social Squash League has been very popular and a great addition for the club members. With the Auckland roads only growing in congestion, the local based competition provided a great alternative to interclub while also growing the club interaction and culture.

The club continues to maintain a strong link to schools in the district and grow the sport in the area. Orewa College have 50 players competing in the Auckland Secondary Schools competition, of which

the Red Beach courts are “home”. Orewa College have utilised the court facilities and continues to provide a source of membership numbers.

Club Championships Sept 2017 - Congratulations to all the club champions. Open winners Mike Beacham and Ashlee Pepper. D grade winners John Martin and Charlotte Green. E grade winners Andrew Schofield and Shevaun Green. Masters, Blair Ashton. Most improved Junior, Anne Leakey.

Mike Beacham was presented with the 2017 Services Award. Matt Pepper was presented an Outstanding Service to Club Award for all the amazing work and long hours he has put into our club over the past 15 years or so.

In mid-2017 the Squash Club launched its own website which utilises a link from the Red Beach Surf Club’s website. And in March 2018, the club produced a new logo, see below.

Overall the club experienced improvement in all areas and has a good base and momentum for further improvement into the 2018-19 season.

Competition where, this year, 38 teams of five children aged between eight and 13 worked together to face a range of physical and mental challenges. It was a week of great camaraderie.

The camp at Mangawhai was a great experience, especially the training sessions where the group simply paddled across the estuary and around to the beach south of the Mangawhai Bar. We had the whole beach to ourselves and, with waves reforming, the kids’ skills improved incredibly.

Many thanks to the committee and helpers (parents) in making this camp a great experience for the children and parents. A special thanks to Kevin Cornish for again supporting and leading parts of the coaching over on the dunes each day, and to camp mother Anita Savage for a job well done.

NORTHERN REGION and NZ POOL CHAMPS It was without doubt a great 2017/18 Pool Champs year with good representation by Red Beach at both Northern Region and NZ Pool Champs. Kirstine Rapson took Sunday trainings in our lead up with squads in the 20s and 30s. The Red Beach team had all abilities and a ‘give it a go’ attitude. Again, so many kids did well but, most importantly, all had fun.

NORTHERN REGION CHAMPIONSHIPS/ CATH & EDDIE MILLAR CUP

Red Beach achieved a ‘threepeat’ in winning the Northern Region overall points trophy for the third consecutive

year. Success came as a result of a strong training push with 160 youngsters representing Red Beach and performing to their best ability. Red Beach came in first with Mairangi Bay in second place. Red Beach, however, had to relinquish the Cath & Eddie Millar cup to Orewa.

OCEANS ‘18 – NATIONALSRed Beach performed well

despite some challenging conditions at Orewa Beach and finished in fourth place overall – a fantastic achievement. A special thanks to Richard Rogers for keeping the boards repaired and available for the kids, and a big ‘thank you’ to all who contributed in making this event such a success – committee, coaches, parents, helpers, lifeguards and officials

Congratulations to all the participants, medallists and place-getters – you had the whole of Red Beach Surf Club cheering you on and you made us very proud. To train for, enter and compete in this event is something the kids will never forget.

Red Beach had the biggest contingent entered this year with 82 kids competing at Oceans ‘18. Every child came away with a smile on his or her face and feeling proud of being part of such a large team. – Well done to you all.

SPECIAL THANKSThe key to our success is

the help we receive from many people. The sharing of duties and support is spread wide, which makes our club unique.

Thank you Colleen Murphy the ‘Club mum’ who organises our barbeque setup and supporting our Sunday morning fundraising BBQ.

I would personally like to thank the Junior Division committee members for their fantastic work: Kirsty Rutledge-Malyon, Sidah Russell, Kevin Cornish, Richard Rogers, Jo Meban, Anita Savage, Toni Rolston, Cecilia Tyne, Kata Simpkins, Brendan Smith and all others who have helped make the 2017-18 season and my last year in Juniors one to remember….thank you.

All of these roles help in different ways and the success of our children is reflected by the work our committee puts in.

Well done on another amazing season. We hope to see the Red Beach colours flying high again next season.

Dylan Turner, ChairmanJuniorSurf Committee

JuniorSurf Chairman’s ReportThe main objective of

the Junior division for the 2017-2018 season was for the children to have fun – whether from participating in training and club activities or by extending themselves and competing at carnivals. We wanted to ensure all the children felt part of one team and, most of all, enjoyed themselves at Red Beach Surf Life Saving Club. I believe that this goal was achieved.

For the committee, this objective meant we had to be balanced in all areas, giving each child a sense of personal achievement and a sense of club camaraderie. As the Chairman, I believe we met this objective.

PARTICIPATION Junior membership for the

season was 381 which was down on the 2016/17 season total of 425 – this is something the committee needs to look into for the 2018/19 season.

TRAINING PARTICIPATIONTraining programmes were put in place with great participation levels. A fantastic mid-week coaching programme was set up by Jack Gavin and the senior club coaches over the summer and leading up to Northern Region Champs. Again, Red Beach had the largest squad of children competing at Oceans ‘18 at which Red Beach placed 4th on overall points. It was notable that there was a lot of enjoyment in training with great

sized groups throughout the 2017/18 season.

200 METRE BADGE The ‘licence’ for our kids to use boards and a good guide to their swimming ability, the 200m badge was mostly attained by this year’s Under 9 group. The objective, once again, is participation at this level. As chairman, I strongly believe that less pressure by coaches, managers, parents and club management is important. These 8 year-olds have many years ahead of them and the focus at this age MUST be fun.

COMMUNICATIONThis year the club committed

to regular communication with its membership, with monthly emails to parents and regular communication with managers by Junior Division secretary Sidah Russell, plus coaches’ communication to their groups. The emphasis has been on encouraging parents to actively participate with their children and to achieve parent involvement at a higher level than other sports. I believe our sport is still well ahead when compared to other sports regarding this.

FINANCEThe committee’s objective

to have a healthy $47,000 bank balance to carry forward to the 2018/19 season has been achieved by way of membership subscriptions, sponsorship and fundraising events. The Treasurer’s report accurately covers this.

EQUIPMENTThis was the eighth season

of our ‘Board Purchase and Lease Scheme’ in which families and the club enter a joint financial relationship. Five families are currently in the ‘Board Purchase Scheme 2017/2018’ process. The scheme has been a success with 10 leased boards returning to the club this winter. The condition of these boards was excellent.

With gear valued at approximately $2,250 per item and given that a large amount of equipment is needed for a club of our size, we successfully maintained equipment, getting through the season with no gear shortages.

Club board usage is high and we currently have 17 boards needing repair, with a budget of $4,500 for repairs over winter.

Equipment is the biggest issue for our club, but with the Board Scheme in place, club board maintenance has been kept to a reasonable level.

Note – the increase in population in our area is going to put pressure on both Red Beach and Orewa Surf Clubs and this is something we, as a club, need to be well prepared for from a gear and facilities perspective.

Surf Canoe ReportThe annual Canoe Training

Day at Red Beach, the event which usually kicks off the canoe racing season, didn’t materialise due to poor water conditions. There were a lot of crews disappointed over the cancellation, however, we plan to make up for it by running the event at the start of the 2018-19 season.

The pre-Christmas Northern Region Interclub carnivals were all held in great surf conditions to introduce new canoeists in the Masters women’s division. Some paddlers were able to experience the flung and dump feel when being washed out in big waves.

It was great to experience the west coast conditions of Muriwai. Surf conditions were perfect to test our skills before heading to the Whangamata Classic in December. The Rockin’ Reds made it through all races with at least one person finishing in the canoe. All teams took on the challenge of staying in the competition and getting a buzz from the thrill of the big waves.

Whangamata saw us finish with good results, the Flying Reddaz first and the Rockin’ Reds third in the Womens Open, with the U19 Red Beach Whales coming through first as well.

Unfortunately, the Owen Chapman Cup carnival was cancelled due to the new Auckland Swim Safe water conditions. The king tide on the

day didn’t help matters either.

Two days of competition at the ERCs at The Mount had us all charging for top results. We had the come-back team of Kevin Cornish with his merry men. With challenging conditions and some old tired canoes, teams and craft were tested. One canoe was retired after its foot pedal broke with the lads unable to repair it. Six Red Beach canoe crews competed with the U19 Whales finishing first in the Long Course and third in the Short Course. We were all very proud of them and excited to see their season progress as they started coming into form.

This year, SLSNZ included canoe racing in the NZ Representative Challenge at The Mount. It was great to see a large number of Red Beach members in the 2018 Northern Region canoe teams. Those selected were Sophie Hildesley, Georgia Parker, Kees Kramer and Sam Readman for the Youth crews and Megan Mckenzie for the Open Women’s team. The event was quite spectacular, drawing great crowds and excellent results. Northern Region finished second by just 0.5 of a point.

The Northern Region Championships were held at Ruakaka with clean surf conditions although the swell was dropping, making for a powerhouse paddle. Our Masters women’s crews doubled their effort by

competing in the Open division as well. The Flying Reddaz women’s crew showed great strength by placing first in all their races, Open and Masters, while the Rockin’ Reds came through with seconds.

At the NZ Championships in Gisborne, and for the first time, it was an all-women’s contingency from Red Beach which took part. No men’s crews were entered. The conditions were great and the turnout of clubs in canoes was huge, making for very long days with pleasing results. Our U19 Whales crew made it to both finals and only through big surf did they miss out on placing. The Rockin’ Reds had one of their crew, Kelly O’Dea, injured with a broken leg but this didn’t stop them from getting into the Open Womens Short Course final. Thanks to Robyn Presland who was there as a supporter, she was able to step in and replace Kelly. The crew placed third and took out the Bronze medal!

The club’s canoe members have now formed a Canoe committee and have big plans to increase the numbers for next season with possibly three U19 women’s teams and an U19 men’s team. Also, the likelihood of a resurgence of the men’s crews. Watch this space, fun times ahead.

65th ANNUAL Report

The club has now completed its 65th year of operation and the way in which the season unfolded is documented in the following pages by way of reports and photographs.

The 2017-18 competition season spanned eight months, starting with the first Pool Interclub event in July 2017 and concluding with the NZ Championships in Gisborne in March 2018.

In mid- December the

The Club Committee of the Red Beach Surf Life Saving Club (Inc)presents for your adoption the 65th Annual Report andFinancial Statement for the year ended 30th April 2018.

THE 2017/2018 SEASONclub launched its brand new website which is delivering a lot of new features.

But for the first time in its 62 year history, the iconic Owen Chapman Cup surf carnival had to be cancelled because of poor water quality. Another factor which brought the cancellation was a king tide close to midday, leaving no beach for events.

MembershipTotal active membership

is showing a dip in numbers,

mainly due to declines in Senior Men in the active and patrolling categories.

Whilst JuniorSurf numbers are also down, the 381 registered membership is still the second highest on record.

The SeniorSurf division will benefit at the start of the new season when a large number of Rookies will be eligible to sit for the Surf Lifeguard Award.

Open Women – Jedeyes

This season saw a mostly new open women’s team formed. Named the Jedeyes, the crew consisted of the no.1 Red Beach hood rat Jasmin Cornish, our blast from the past and power house Rebecca Ash (Rash), and our two new but experienced imports from the West Coast, Grace Joseph and Danielle Ford.

The girls got their act together early and actually started the pre-season with a different crew. Nina Schoonbeek-Berridge, our camp mum and machine in the boat, broke the news that she was going to be a real mum. She has since had a beautiful girl, and we hope to have her in a boat in a few years.

Thankfully the crew pulled

together and got a team on the water, and once ironing out the usual kinks that come when forming a new crew, we managed to get some good boat speed happening.

The girls managed to

get a podium finish at most carnivals. The Nationals saw a variety of different conditions testing all crews and big waves being the biggest test for the Jedeyes.

The girls came together and faced their fears to see them perform very well in surf.

They came away from Nationals with a bronze medal and a new belief.

These girls have a lot of promise and will hopefully be seen again next season.

Under 23 Women - Rabbits

For the 2017-18 season, the U23 Rabbits recruited two new members, Kayla Rickaby in 2nd bow and myself (Chase Cahalane) as sweep, joining the established Rabbits rowers Olivia Soesbergen (bow), Kathleen Oneroa (2nd bow) and Nicole McCormick (stroke).

The Rabbits had high ambitions for the season while needing to get two new members up to speed. As such, this dedicated crew started training very early in the off-season, both on and off the water. The rowers all achieved huge gains in the gym and in erg times and these translated onto the water with the crew’s boat speed increasing throughout the season.

The Rabbits were able to proudly represent Red Beach at all surf boat events in the North Island. Results throughout the season were mixed within the highly competitive U23 division, however, the Rabbits regularly achieved both finals and placements. Unfortunately, a decent capsize at the Central Region Champs caused injury to a crew member and damage to the boat, knocking the Rabbits from the second place spot in the NZ Surf Boat series. Due to the huge surf at the North Island Champs, the crew’s opportunity to take the NZ series was cancelled.

Heading into Nationals the Rabbits were injury free and in fantastic form, thanks to the crew’s commitment to fitness and training. We also received a great deal of technical input from other Red Beach sweeps

who provided huge support to the crew. In addition, the Rabbits primary boat had been recently repaired and refined, thanks to our very generous sponsors.

As expected, Nationals were exceptionally closely fought in the U23 division. After the first day, the crew had secured a short course finals spot. Sadly, however, a serious shoulder injury to a crew member when punching through the surf in a long course heat knocked the Rabbits from Long Course contention. Kathleen battled through the injury and would not allow the crew to miss the Short Course final. Unfortunately, only just missing the wave from the can, a Nationals medal wasn’t to be.

The Rabbits have worked exceptionally hard this season and have been unlucky with some results. This is the nature of surf, however, and is what makes the sport incredibly exciting and unpredictable. The crew would also like to extend their huge gratitude to Bugsy, Blakey, Cos, Mus and Jed for their continued support and technical input of the crew and new sweep, and to the crew’s partners who provided huge support. Also, a mention to Jack Gavin for his support in creating a fantastic club culture, Debra for the administrative oversight and Bruce for spearheading the rowing contingent.

It has been an honour to train and compete alongside the amazing members of the Red Beach Surf Club.

Returning from Australia, the challenge was to re-build again for NZ National Champs and the Boomers showed throughout the competition they were top qualifiers in both Long and Short Course, however, were unable to win a podium position in the finals.

This season was a true demonstration of the will and determination of a group of men to bloody mindedly, and in the face of adversity (a number of issues not referred to), chase and achieve their collective goal. To fight for and win the honour of wearing the Silver Fern and represent NZ, our club, and families was the primary goal, and it was achieved.

Bugsy O’Halloran, Sweep

Open Women - MuzziesThe Muzzies had a trying

season from the outset where things weren’t quite falling into place for various reasons. However, this wasn’t an excuse and the girls went full throttle at every competition, even with substitutes and seat shuffles. Because the crew put such high standards on their performances on the water, this was tough to swallow.

At the halfway point in the season the crew started to click – maybe from the mountaineering expedition to the top of Mt Taranaki where we were greeted at the summit - in the middle of summer - with a snow-capped mountain! The performances started to show and the competition started to look.

The Muzzies went into Nationals with lightning fast boat speed. Unfortunately,

the game plan back fired and went out the door when they were put under a wave in the long course heats by their sweep (sorry girls), meaning qualification for the finals was non-existent. The Muzzies however, kept their chins up as they were in the short course final, all or nothing. The final started and the crew ripped out to a massive lead; only one thing remained, keep it straight coming home.

Unfortunately, late take-offs were a common occurrence for the Muzzies this season and we haven’t been able to learn how to hold them straight just yet. Carnage ensured, taking the Jedeyes out in the process. The season didn’t go to plan on the water but it was great from start to finish regardless.

a first for the crew and as such the training programme was adapted and the lads began their training in August, building to the NZ trials in November 2017.

The idea was to build for the NZ trials, win selection, then re-build to peak in February for the test series. It became apparent after the first weekend of trials that this was not going to be as the NZ selectors struggled to reach a decision and it became apparent they were deliberating on three crews, which included the Boomers.

On 2 January 2018, after

the second round of the NZ Surf Boat Series, the Boomers were named as the NZ Open Men’s crew and had six weeks

to prepare for the test series against Australia.

The commitment of the Boomers went to a new level and the work these men put in was unequalled in terms of anything I personally have seen in surf boats.

With effectively two major competition rows in the NZ domestic season before taking on the Aussies, the Boomers were wanting good results to boost confidence and test racing strategies.

The ERCs at Mount

Maunganui did this with the Boomers winning Gold in the short course, their third consecutive title win. However, the North Island Champs at Waihi the following week did not go to plan with

the crew needing to withdraw from the competition due to Bugsy’s health issues. In fact these health issues two weeks prior to the test series saw Bugsy needing to withdraw from the NZ team and Red Beach ex boat sweep and boat captain Craig (Blakey) Dillon stepping up to rescue what was looking like a very cruel blow to the Boomers.

The crew, with Blakey, rowed in the series against Australia at Elouera Beach, NSW and the record will show they were beaten 3-0. What the record does not show is that the racing was extremely close and but for the break of a wave the Boomers were unlucky not to finish the test series with a 2-1 win.

Surf Boat Captain’s ReportRed Beach had four surf

The boat crews would not be able to compete without sponsorship and we acknowledge the support of the club’s sponsors and especially our major boat sponsors, namely The Flying Herons and Argosy Property. Thank you so much for your support over the last year and we look forward to working with you over the next season.

A big thank you to everyone else who supported us during the year by doing all those little things that really helped our crews. This covered all sorts of things ranging from the sweeps organising the crews and training (special thanks to our stand-in sweeps who, during the season, stepped up to assist with trainings when the normal sweep couldn’t make it), maintenance and repairs on boats and trailers, towing boats to carnivals,

making sure we had all the information for entries (chasing crews when required – thanks Michelle), family and friends supporting the crews and all the other little things that we needed to be able to complete.

We had some great results and achievements, we had some frustrating results, we had some agonising close finishes where we just missed out and we had a wide range of weather conditions for racing.

I know just how much effort was put in and how hard all the crews trained to be successful this year.

I am looking forward to the next season when our crews will again work hard chasing titles and representing Red Beach.

2018 season saw a change in crew personnel with the 2nd stroke seat vacated by Charlie Graham and replaced with Chris ‘Auntie’ Carew. Jed Wright, Hayden Smith, Shamus O’Halloran and Bugsy O’Halloran (sweep) made up the remaining core of the crew with Ryan Davenport committing to a contingency 5th seat role, as and when required.

2017-2018 was to be a new challenge for the Boomers in that the crew made the decision that the primary goal for this season was to win selection as the NZ Open Men’s surf boat crew and represent NZ against Australia in the Trans-Tasman test series in February 2018. This was

President’s ReportAt the time of writing this

report, and as many of you will have noticed, we have commenced the final stage of our renovations to bring the club to a near-finished building. This is our club’s second biggest asset, with our members being our most important and largest asset. The two go hand in hand; nice clubrooms lift the spirits of our members and give us pride in our club. It also helps increase our revenue which enables us to operate.

We should all be excited with this progress towards completion; it has been a very long journey to get to this stage. As with all voluntary organisations it’s the blood, sweat and tears of our members who achieve this result, all in their own time. A very big thank you to the members involved so that we can all get to enjoy a completed club ready for this coming summer.

Special thanks to the Auckland Council and Foundation North Trust as the main contributors to this last round of funding. There are also many others who will be recognised on the building’s completion, but I wish to personally thank Paul Boocock for his involvement financially, plus being part of the building team and support to myself in many ways. It’s quite ironic that he received the Presidents Cup this year, not just for the club development effort but as overall Team Manager on the beach as well!

Whether its patrolling, competing in carnivals, board, ski, swim, boat and canoe training, Friday night socialising

or braving IRB training through the winter, there’s always a buzz about the place. There’s never a shortage of volunteers ready to get involved and make whatever it is successful.

Over the course of the year we ran fund raising events, quiz nights, the fishing contest and the Hawaii raffle (generously sponsored by You Travel Orewa and co-organised with our neighbours at Orewa). In total, these events raised in excess of $40,000 and, just as importantly, involved the collective efforts and support of a lot of members and club supporters. A big ‘thank you’ to everyone who organised, found sponsors, sold/bought tickets and generally contributed.

Although having a fairly large team at this year’s Nationals in Gisborne, we achieved limited success in competition. However, is success measured by results? We are on the fringe of great things to come, competitively speaking; we are already succeeding with our club spirit and team culture. The club environment we have does eventually lead to those competitive results. Through what our club coach Jack Gavin is achieving with our members has been reflected at regional level in winning the Northern Region Championships at Ruakaka.

The promising signs are with the large numbers in training, both on the beach and in the pool. Adding to this were some great performances by our Junior athletes, taking out the Northern Region Championships at Omaha, placing second for the Cath & Eddie Millar Cup and finishing fifth at Oceans ’18 at Orewa.

This year’s annual Mangawhai Junior camp had over 200 kids doing the ‘Survivor’ and as any visitor to Red Beach on a summer Sunday morning will attest, the Junior club continues to be very strong with close to 400 kids plus parents, coaches and supporters engaged in a variety of beach and water activities.

Unfortunately, the Owen Chapman Cup surf carnival was cancelled due to poor water quality. This assessment of water quality is a new indicator initiated by Council, and we endeavor to work with the local authority to maintain a high standard of water quality. The Owen Chapman Cup event coincided with large storms and a king tide close to midday which also brought this cancellation.

This was our ninth season of patrolling Pakiri Beach during the peak of the summer (Dec – Feb) in addition to normal patrols at Red Beach. Our lifeguards completed a total of 1,723 voluntary patrolling hours. Your efforts, whether on the beach, upskilling by gaining additional awards or instructing are greatly appreciated.

Lifesaving Report Surf Carnival ActionWe concluded the 2017-18

season having again achieved our mission of keeping the community safe on our beaches, Red Beach and Pakiri. The club exists for that purpose and all our activities ultimately lead to providing trained, equipped and enabled lifeguards between the flags.

With 149 refreshed lifeguards and 25 new lifeguards we collectively put in over 1,723 voluntary hours on our beaches. Over and above these hours many of our lifeguards upskilled themselves by completing First Aid, Patrol Captain, VHF and IRB driver/crewman awards.

This year saw a shortened Red Beach patrol season with smaller patrols and a longer Pakiri season with larger patrols. This initiative

Surf carnival activity began with the Long Distance Carnival at Red Beach in October and concluded in March with the NZ Championships in Gisborne. We caught the following action on camera.

was a trial this season, after monitoring statistics and activity on our beaches. This worked well, although it did mean the majority of our patrol members patrolled at Pakiri only over the season.

I continue to be proud of our club ethos that members spend time above the voluntary hours on the beach with travel to Pakiri and on many occasions patrol under arduous conditions due to weather and the lack of shelter. Craig Gledhill continues to work on the building of a tower with a small team of helpers. This is slow progress due to the consents process and lack of funding. Thank you to the Pakiri campers who have helped support this build by way of donating funds from raffles they have run for this purpose.

Our qualified lifeguard membership continues to grow, with excellent leadership displayed by Wade Downey and his team of instructors. A well developed and run junior Rookie programme continues to be extremely valuable, with extremely high numbers becoming lifeguards in their first senior year.

This year, the IRB team has continued to grow, thanks to the efforts of Peter Kramer and his IRB instructors. Having extra drivers and crew has made the provision of patrols a lot easier and is leading to the formation of an IRB racing team.

These Lifeguard and IRB instructors must be recognised for the hours they put into these programmes and the skills and commitment they bring to the roles.

Club Captain’s ReportAnother great season came

to an end with some great developments, stories and achievements added to the history books. Our members continue to support the brand and there have been some memorable moments to look back on over the 2017-2018 season from a competitive and social sense.

Our members continue to show and develop a passion for our club and wear and display the Red Beach brand with pride. It is very evident that our relationship with other clubs is at an all-time high and we are well respected by our peers who often comment on what we have achieved and the vibe that oozes from our members, supporters and athletes. The successful social functions, fundraisers and various other events which are often supported by members from other clubs make our culture the envy of many.

In an environment where clubs struggle to survive and grow, we enjoy a powerful culture, growth and retention of athletes that I doubt could be matched by any other club in New Zealand. On top of that our clubhouse heads towards its completion to provide one of the best facilities in the country for our members to enjoy.

For me personally the environment on the beach this year was the best I’ve ever seen. Our team meetings and debrief sessions by our coach Jack Gavin and the beach managers were

a highlight. Celebrating the successes and sucking up the defeats was important, always providing a few laughs and allowing achievements to be recognised there and then as a team.

From a results perspective the team performed strongly in our region, taking out the overall win at the NRCs at Ruakaka. This was a great result for the club and drew a lot of congratulations from neighbouring clubs where Piha was the expected favourite, turning up with a very strong and stacked team of new faces. In the end they were no match for our “organically grown talent” with a healthy points victory over all NR clubs.

We are very lucky to have such a great junior programme that continues to feed young members through to the senior club to become lifeguards, athletes and all round great clubbies. You only had to go down to the beach on any day of the week to see the growth with the numbers in the water in both the junior sessions and the senior squads … an impressive sight.

Some great results emerged from the season including the pool champs with multiple NZ records and our U16 men winning every team event on the programme. The ERC and NRC carnivals were very successful and there were many new faces standing on the podium enjoying success. Towards the end of the season the athletes were well

conditioned and headed to the Nationals in Gisborne with high hopes. I congratulate those medal winners who enjoyed success at the pinnacle event of the season with a number of new faces becoming NZ champions. For those who came close and for the many hard luck stories that emerged, don’t be discouraged as the hard work eventually pays off and your time will come.

Finally, I’d like to thank Jack Gavin for his efforts this season, providing a programme that was outstanding and all-inclusive across our divisions. He has injected a huge amount of his own time into binding the divisions together and I’m sure if you talk to any member from the board/ski, boats, canoes or junior rookies they will all say they felt part of a team.

The future looks bright and the momentum is building. I look forward to seeing where it takes us next season.

Finally, thanks to all those who have acted as Patrol Captains during the season. The role of PC is vital and the guards who step up to take these roles face many challenges, all of which help to grow them as future leaders of the club. Thank you to all patrolling members who support them.

Surf Boat Captain’s ReportRed Beach had four surf

boat crews in competition during the 2017-18 season … the Boomers in the Open Men’s division with sweep Bugsy O’Halloran; two crews in the Open Women’s division - the Muzzies with sweep Mus O’Halloran and the Jedeyes with sweep Jed Wright; and the Rabbits in the U23 Women’s division with our new sweep Chase Cahalane, all representing the club.

I am looking forward to the next season when our crews will again work hard chasing titles and representing Red Beach.

report, and as many of you will have noticed, we have commenced the final stage of our renovations to bring the club to a near-finished building.

Thanks to Debra Cairns who, as well as doing an excellent job as our full-time club administrator, also fills the voluntary role of Lifesaving Manager and is on the building committee.

Thanks also to Debra for her very capable administration and management of the club’s affairs and to Lisa Fellowes and Greg Adams and their respective teams who manage the continued growth and revenue

a first for the crew and as such the training programme was adapted and the lads began their training in August, building to the NZ trials in November 2017.

Surf Boat CompetitionJuniorSurf Training DayRed Beach had four surf boat crews in competition during the 2017-18 season … the Boomers in the Open

Men’s division with sweep Bugsy O’Halloran; two crews in the Open Women’s division - the Muzzies with sweep Mus O’Halloran and the Jedeyes with sweep Jed Wright; and the Rabbits in the U23 Women’s division with new sweep Chase Cahalane.

The JuniorSurf division ended the 2017-18 season with a healthy membership of 381 youngsters. In December our roving cameraman took the opportunity to look in on a Sunday morning training session at Red Beach to bring you these pics.

But for the first time in its 62 year history, the iconic Owen Chapman Cup surf carnival had to be cancelled because of poor water quality. Another factor which brought the cancellation was a king tide close to midday, leaving no beach for events.

A warm-up run for Red Beach athletes at the Whangamata Classic surf carnival, held over two days in December 2017.

MANGAWHAI CAMPHeld over the summer break

in January, this has been one of the Junior Division’s greatest successes. The five-day camp involved the finale Survivor
