Message from the Director

Every day across Pierce County, people are coming together to build safe, healthy and

thriving communities. I am deeply inspired by the energy and commitment of youth and adults who gather in schools, neighbor’s living rooms, police stations, churches, and community centers to address the pressing community problems. People from every kind of background are investing their talent and personal resources to build safe com-munities. They work with us to build neigh-borhood organizations that practice civility from the Key Peninsula to Eatonville, from Northeast Tacoma to the Eastside and South Tacoma and out into Parkland and Spanaway. As the Executive Director of Safe Streets the generosity, resiliency and grit of the people of our communities has lit the match of inspi-ration in me every day for the last 29 years.

Our staff is driven by the mission of the Safe Streets and is committed to do justice to the power and wisdom of the people we serve. And in all over this past year we served over 50,000 people.

Our mission – to unite and inspire neighbors, youth and business to build safe, healthy and thriving communities - leads us to be a bridge that connects people to resources and forms coalitions for a safer today - con-necting neighbors and youth to build solu-tions and address immediate as well as long term safety concerns.

We are in this work until every neighbor-hood is safe! We work to create spaces where young people can vision a safer world and take steps toward that vision. We educate thousands of individuals on proven strategies for prevention of violence and drug use. We turn prevention theories into practice in neighborhoods and schools to halt the problems that erode the founda-tions of civility and our community.

Together we build safe, healthy and thriv-ing communities. We could not do this work without our donors, volunteers, partners and our supporters.

Community members of Tacoma-Pierce County, we value your talent and your inter-est in our work of community building. Most of all we are determined to restore peace and peace of mind to our community.

Whilewecontinuetoseeknewwaystomakeourcommunitysafer,wealsomakesurewestaytruetoourgrassrootsneighborhoodorganizing,whichweknowisthebackboneofourwork.Recently,wesupportedtheParklandneighborhoodgroupintheircollectivepushtogettheissueofadrughouseinfrontofprosecutor’sofficeandpolice. Wearesoproudoftheirperseveranceinorganizingandcollaboratingwithcommunitystakeholders.Thisteamsawarealwin:thedrughousewasshutdownandthepropertyisupforsale.Thesearetangiblewaysourtrainingandbehind-the-scenesorganizinghelpsneighborsstaysafe. Makingthishappenistheworkoftheentirecommunity.It’stheworkoftheneighbors,oflawenforcement,ofcodeofficials,ofSafeStreetsmobilizers,andofthedonorswhosupportourmissionandenableustoserveinneighborhoodsalloverPierceCounty. YoursupportofSafeStreetskeepsusonthefrontlinesofimprovingpublicsafetyinourcommunity.Canyouhelpusduringthisseasonofgrowth?
