Welcome from the Head of School

Income and Expenses 17-18

Dear SFS Community

Welcome to our 2017-18 Annual Report. We appreciate your time and attention and hope you enjoy this brief snapshot of the school year.

It was another incredible year for our school. Since 1912 we have been serving the foreign community in Seoul and we are happy to welcome almost over 1,400 students from 50 countries to the Elementary School, Middle School, High School and British School. Each and every child is valued and nurtured - we believe every child is individual and special.

At Seoul Foreign School we inspire excellence and build character in all our students. Teaching and learning are at the heart of what we do. Here we share with you some of our academic highlights. We also give you a glimpse into Arts and Sport - two areas in which we have long thrived.

We invite you to share our final university entrance data. Our Class of 2018 have gone on to study in some of the finest academic institutions. Each student carved their own path and chose the destination that suited them best. Our High School Counseling team advised and supported them every step of the way.

As always, please remember this is a summary. My door is open to the community. We welcome you to Seoul Foreign School to discuss any aspect of this report or any other questions you may have.

We appreciate your continuing support!

God Bless

Colm Flanagan

The Academic Year

The 2017 - 2018 school year was a significant year of change in educational leadership at SFS. It was the first year of Jeff Holcomb as

the new High School Principal. In Andy Freeman and myself, the school also appointed a new British School Principal and a new Assistant Head of School - Academics. We both spent considerable amounts of time with our predecessors and future team members in the latter half of the year to ensure a smooth handover. We also joined the Senior Leadership Team at the end of the year for a multi-day strategic planning session to plan for the upcoming 2018 - 2019 school year.

With the planned introduction of the IB Middle Years Programme into the High School for August 2018, much collaborative work has been undertaken to ensure a smooth transition for students from the Middle School and the British School Key Stage 3 into the High School. This has led to students from both the British School and the Middle School generally feeling able to make an effective transition.

Results from standardized tests and external exams taken by our students throughout 2017 - 2018 continue to indicate that our students are performing at a high academic level. This is highlighted by the following examples:

In standardised tests (MAP tests) taken by all students in each grade from Grade 2 to Grade 8 in Math, Reading and Language, SFS students consistently scored higher than comparable international schools in the region. In SAT and ACT standardised tests in the High School our students scored at a consistent level as compared to previous years, which is

significantly above world averages. The number of students who successfully completed the full IB-Diploma continued to increase with an average overall score of 34.5. This is significantly higher than world average but also the highest average reached by our students over the last 5 years.

SFS students continue to attend top universities around the world with the 122 SFS graduates receiving 449 offers or acceptance letters from universities across the globe. When surveyed about their happiness in the university they would be attending, 90% of our graduates indicated they were happy to extremely happy (6 or above on a 1-10 scale.)

The final highlight of the 2017 -2018 school year was the authorization verification visit by the IB for our Middle Years Programme in May 2018, leading to the IB authorising SFS as an IB MYP school later in 2018. SFS is now a full IB Continuum school offering continuous IB programmes from Kindergarten to grade 12.

A Year in Sport

A Year in ArtsSeoul Foreign School continued to take pride in its reputation for sports in 2017-

18. Competition and curriculum sports Under the leadership of Susan Sell-Haynes our SWEP sports programme thrived. We offered students extra curricular activities for two hours every evening and throughout Saturday mornings.

Seoul Foreign School has long had an impressive reputation and this year was no exception. 2017-18 was a bumper year for our Performing Arts department.

We put on over 40 shows across our three theatres. Performers ranged from 2-18 ande covered every area and class of the school. We showcased choirs, bands, orchestra, jazz ensembles, plays, musicals and nativities.

Major hows included Grease, Bye Bye Birdie, Spamalot and Midsummer Jersey. These performances are made possible thanks to our incredible Performing Arts faculty and a host of volunteers including our Drama Mamas who coordinate costume, hair, make-up and so much more. Lighting, production and stage management are run by John Black with the support of our volunteer student program - Crusader Live.

As well as our major productions we ran Christmas concerts by grade and school; string and full orchestra showcases. Our choirs performed in various guises and we had an amazing Night of Jazz.

We also played host to APAC Dance and the KIMEA MS Honor Band Festival - as well as attending many other competitions and festivals within the Asia region.

In all our theatre staff supported well over 900 performances and bookings. Our facilities were utilised to their maximum and our community afforded many a viewing and listening pleasure.
