Table Tennis Provides a Unique Opportunity to STUDENTS

Table Tennis is fun and approachable, and can be played at different

levels

Many young people have experience playing ping pong as a recreational activity

The sport can be played at a very high competitive level as an Olympic and Paralympic

sport, so it remains challenging over time

High school students of different skill levels can enjoy playing, and will find it rewarding

to improve their skills, and be part of a team while representing their school

Table Tennis is a lifetime sport, and encourages integration and

diversity

The sport is popular all over the globe, and brings together people of different

backgrounds

Many players enjoy the sport from childhood through retirement

Skill level is not dependent on gender, age, or size

Players of different genders, and wide ranges of ages and sizes, can successfully

compete against each other

Table Tennis improves fitness and promotes important skills:

Good sportsmanship and fair play

Discipline, hard work, and focus

Resilience and the ability to rise to a challenge

Aerobic activity and active lifestyle

Agility, hand-eye coordination, and footwork

3-D visualization and spatial reasoning

Strategic thinking

Table Tennis Provides a Unique Opportunity to SCHOOLS

Table Tennis is safer than many other high school sports

Doesn’t incorporate bodily contact and isn’t associated with contact-

related injuries (e.g., tackling, hard fouls, etc.)

Mixed age, mixed gender teams can play safely against each other

Table Tennis is played indoors in a climate-controlled gym

Scheduled play is impervious to weather conditions

Unless extreme weather causes school cancellations or early

dismissals, table tennis schedules should be unaffected by most bad

weather conditions

Players (and coaches and spectators) are not exposed to extreme

heat, cold, rain, sunburn, or insects

Table Tennis is an attractive sport to add to a school’s

athletic team offerings

Increases number and variety of available extracurricular activities

Can be played as a single co-ed team instead of separate boys’ and

girls’ teams

May appeal to students who are not as interested in existing school

sports or who do not have a winter sport

Increases total number of students who can participate on school

sport teams

Can be incorporated as a traditional sports team, or as an

activity/interest club team

Overview of 2017 - 2018 HIGH SCHOOL TABLE TENNIS LEAGUE

High School Table Tennis League is a winter sport

It’s scheduled for cold weather months, when outdoor sports are limited by weather and early sunset

It fits between traditional fall and spring sports seasons without schedule conflicts

High School Table Tennis League is manageable for schools

Triangle Table Tennis will schedule and administer the league, run pre-season instructional clinics, schedule

and supervise the weekly matches, update standings, and run the end-of-season tournament

Our goal is to avoid over-burdening busy Athletic or Club Directors

Format

The 2017-2018 High School Table Tennis League will consist of a minimum of 4 and maximum of 12 high

school teams

Each match up between school teams will include 6 singles matches, and 3 doubles matches

School teams are awarded one point for each singles or doubles match won by its players, and the school

team with 5 or more points wins the school match up

Each school team will have 6 to 12 players who play in each match up between schools.

— Teams may be composed of both boys and girls

— Teams may have additional players as alternates or substitutes

— Any additional players who do not play in the 6 singles matches or 3 doubles matches that are officially counted in

a school match up, may choose to play each other in exhibition or practice matches that do not count toward the

school match up score, if court space is available

— Triangle Table Tennis has adequate space and courts to allow and encourage this additional participation on most

days

High School Requirements

Individual players require a modest amount of gear

Players need clothing that allows free motion (e.g., gym shorts and tee-shirts) and non-marking

athletic shoes (rubber sole shoes are best, but other sneakers may be used)

— Schools optionally could choose to provide a standard uniform or just a standard shirt

Players need a table tennis racquet (“paddle”) with black rubber on one side and red rubber on the

other, and table tennis balls

— Schools could choose to provide inexpensive paddles for players who don’t have them

Practice requires regulation size tables and nets

Schools could choose to invest in 2-4 tables that fold and roll away when not in use

— These could be set up in their gym or even in multi-purpose or activity space at the school

— If desired, Triangle Table Tennis can assist in providing highly discounted tables to enable practice

Schools could choose to practice at Triangle Table Tennis:

— Because every School League team member will have a complimentary associate membership during

the league, for no additional charge teams may practice on tables that might be available during open

play hours at Triangle Table Tennis (i.e., tables not in use or reserved by other groups or programs)

— Or, for an additional charge, schools could choose to reserve groups of contiguous tables to schedule

practice time at Triangle Table Tennis that is guaranteed not to be limited by other open play users

Practice requires knowledgeable instruction

Schools can use the pre-season clinics provided by Triangle Table Tennis at the start of the season

to provide initial training to coaches and players

— Ongoing practice could be supervised by an interested high school coach

— Alternatively, for an additional charge, schools could choose to reserve group lesson times with

Triangle Table Tennis coaches
