    Christina Svec

Sequencing Improvisation Through Singing Voice Development K-5 Partnership with SLAKE

Developing an in-tune singing voice has important foundations in early childhood context, and can be sequenced through 5th grade. Vocal development begins with experiencing how the voice works in all of its ranges. Tonal pattern instruction can be applied to familiar and unfamiliar literature in order to build a tonal vocabulary related to song literature. Once they have a vocabulary, they can improvise! Svec will briefly discuss the research behind singing voice development, demonstrate engaging vocal exploration and melodic improvisation activities, and provide classroom examples through video footage of young children. The handout will include familiar and unfamiliar literature with specific sequences for teaching voice development and improvisatory skills. Dr. Christina L. Svec holds a B. A. from University of North Texas, M. A. from Michigan State University, and a Ph. D. from University of North Texas. She is certified in Kodály Levels and Music Learning Theory. Christina has multiple published articles and has presented at many conferences. Dr. Svec is an Assistant Professor of Music Education at Iowa State University in Ames, IA and currently teaches at Iowa State University Lab School and conducts the Ames Children’s Choir.
