2016ANNUAL REPORT

2017 Annual Report

All kids are special, and Sarah Heinz House has been fully focused on helping our region’s youth identify, develop and leverage their unique gifts to build great futures for 116 years and counting!

We continue to do this by staying centered on our most important core value, Kids First. We foster a sense of belonging so that every child may feel both physically and emotionally safe, as well as empowered to push beyond their comfort zone and fail forward. We also ensure that our programs are designed to integrate both fun and learning, so that our kids have time to joyfully play, create and explore….in other words…time to be kids and enjoy childhood.

Whether they are swiping on an iPad while designing a tiny house, expressing themselves through dance, practicing Leave No Trace principles while camping at our resident camp, or pushing beyond their perceived limitations in our physical education classes, our youth (preschool-12th grade) are laughing and smiling as the adult and peer mentors surrounding them instill our remaining values of Service, Character, Respect and Leadership.

Our membership remains highly diverse, and we believe this is an invaluable asset. Youth of varied communities, economic backgrounds, sexual orientations, cultures and family circumstances come

together each week for shared fun, meals, learning and collaborative activities. Most of our youth’s paths would not have crossed but for Sarah Heinz House and the opportunity to learn

from others unlike themselves would have had to wait until later in life.

As an incubator for our region’s next generation of diverse servant leaders, we place a premium upon service to others. Club activities, like making portable meals for the

homeless, Keystone Teen Leadership Team projects, like Campaign for Others to benefit Community Health Services and youth serving as program volunteers

collectively instill a joy of giving time and reinforces personal responsibility to do good whenever an opportunity arises.

We remain steadfast to our commitment to never let cost be a barrier to serving youth. Accordingly, our low cost after-school and summer

programs remain, and we continue to provide need based scholarships. This is critical to closing many “gaps” that exist and

leveling the playing field for kids.

It takes a village, and we certainly do not do the wonderful work that we do alone. We are grateful to all of the

individuals, companies and foundations who choose Sarah Heinz House as a trusted partner in fulfilling

their goal of enriching the lives of, and increasing opportunities for, youth in our community. We

look forward to what we will be able to achieve together in 2018 and beyond!

Congratulations to our Youth of the Year Brie Gerner!

GROWING UP, I WAS EMBARRASSED TO INVITE FRIENDS TO MY HOUSE, LET ALONE TELL ANYONE ABOUT MY FAMILY’S HOME. BUT WHEN I WAS AT HEINZ, IT DIDN’T MATTER WHERE I CAME FROM OR HOW MUCH MONEY WE HAD, I WAS UNSTOPPABLE. I WAS UNGUARDED. I WAS THE GIRL THAT I WANTED TO BE. AS THE YOUTH OF THE YEAR, I WANT PEOPLE TO KNOW THAT THE CLUB CAN BE A HOME. IT CAN BE A HOME TO ANYONE WHO NEEDS IT, REGARDLESS OF AGE, SOCIAL CLASS, RACE, GENDER OR HOME SITUATION, BECAUSE IN HERE YOU ARE NOT LIMITED BY YOUR CIRCUMSTANCES OUT THERE.

Following a review of presentations by five finalists, a panel of guest judges selected Brieanna Gerner as Sarah Heinz House’s Youth of the Year. Brie therefore qualified to advance the Pennsylvania Youth of the year program sponsored by Boys and Girls Clubs of America. At the state competition, Brie was selected as the State Winner! She then went on to compete in the Northeast Regional Competition. Brie was a member of Sarah Heinz House for 12 years. She served as the President of Keystone Club, and

is a leader in our Dance program. During her time at SHH, she served as a volunteer in Gym-Swim, the Pool, Dance Classes, and Club. She was recognized at the annual Awards Dinner, Volunteer Dinner, and was selected as the 2014recipient of the Sons of American Revolution award which honors our Top Girl Member. Brie is a Senior at CAPA (Creative and Performance Arts) High School.
