Annual Report
2017
LETTER FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
For far too long, Baypath was in survival mode, just trying to operate month to month. That
wasn’t a good strategy for the shelter’s longevity or to help us maintain our commitment to
the animals and our community.
Over the past few years, Baypath – our board and staff – has focused laser-like on creating
a sustainable model that puts us on a trajectory for growth. As you’ve likely observed,
we’ve made modest but critical improvements toward our long-term goals that include the
construction of a state-of-the-art shelter.
We’ve done this by strengthening our existing partnerships with local and out-of-state animal
welfare groups and creating new ones; increasing our participation in the inner workings of
our own town; and boosting community outreach and education.
We have grown the number of agencies we partner
with to create a safety net for dogs and cats in need.
This rescue ecosystem enables us to scale the number
of animals we can assist as well as to reach out when
we are in need.
In Hopkinton, we have worked closely with
administrators, the board of selectmen, committee
members, and animal control to ensure Baypath is
meeting the town’s animal welfare needs. We were
honored to add our expertise to the drafting of
new kennel bylaws, resulting in some of the most
comprehensive and progressive bylaws in the state,
particularly pertaining to shelters.
We have also concentrated on engagement with
the community, taking our big, purple tent to local
events, presenting to school and service groups,
and providing in-shelter tours.
By focusing on these key areas, we’ve maximized
our impact on animals in our care. Your support
makes it all possible. We are so excited to share
this year in review with you: a testament to your
unswerving commitment to animal welfare.
Elizabeth Jeff eris,
Executive DirectorBaypath Humane Society
PS. I had big news personally this past year – I added Pigeon, a deaf Baypath alum,
to my four-footed family.

OUR MISSION
Baypath Humane Society of Hopkinton is dedicated to providing shelter, care, humane treatment, and loving homes for stray or unwanted companion animals. We seek to serve our community by fostering relationships, promoting education and making a positive impact on pet overpopulation.Baypath Humane Society of Hopkinton, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) organization
OUR VISION
By our 50th anniversary (2027), Baypath Humane Society of Hopkinton will serve more than 5,000 animals annually through a variety of services.
OUR STRATEGIC GOALS
This vision will be achieved through the focus on 5 strategic goals:
1. Design, fund, and construct a new, state-of-the-art facility for Baypath Humane Society.
2. Build and sustain the human capacity to provide ongoing leadership, oversight, and support to meet the needs of the organization and the community.
3. Employ a robust mix of strategies to tap into a broad base of support and provide a donor experience that deepens the commitment to Baypath and the animals over time.
4. Serve as a critical member of the community, an expert resource for animal welfare, and a “go to” source for animal-related services.
5. Deliver or partner with others to deliver a rich set of services to animals in the community to make a material difference in their lives.
YEAR IN REVIEW
All year we focused on stepping up our game with our Signature Events, ensuring attendees had the best time possible, all while raising money for animals in our care. We also ramped up our Kitten Foster Program and our Dog Behavior Team, helping our cats and dogs get the one-on-one attention needed to survive and thrive.
KITTEN FOSTER PROGRAM
Kittens represent almost half of our cat adoptions, yet kittens also are the most vulnerable population we serve. To give the stray and unwanted kittens that come to the shelter the best possible chance of survival, we have developed a strong foster network of 81 families ready to care for the medical and socialization needs of these little ones and their mamas. Animal Care Associate Nikki Baltas directs the program and provides all foster families with one-on-one support and guidance.
DOG BEHAVIOR TEAM
Celebrating its one-year anniversary, our Dog Behavior Team (DBT) has grown in size and skills. This all-volunteer squad, led by Director of Dog Programs Jeanine Lorusso, takes on the challenging needs of our harder to adopt dogs. Their one-on-one sessions range from helping dogs overcome their fears and shyness to calming and socializing hyperactive dogs. The DBT is trained to provide instruction on manners and behaviors that make the dogs more attractive to adopters and more successful in the home. You can read about Lanie, one of their many success stories, in the Happy Tails section of this report.
SIGNATURE EVENTS
7TH ANNUAL PAWS & CLAWS 5K RUN/WALK - OCTOBER
More than 500 runners/walkers – many with their dogs – toed the start line at our longest running annual event, which brings animal lovers and their pets to Hopkinton State Park for a 5K road race. This year we invited families to enjoy an expanded village of vendor booths and activities.
5TH ANNUAL FUR BALL – APRIL
More than 300 attendees – many coming for their fifth year straight – enjoyed an evening of dinner, dancing, and live and silent auctions. The top bid of the night was for a Patriots helmet signed by now-five-time Super Bowl champion Tom Brady. Our favorite DJs Cha-Chi Loprete and Carter Alan were on hand again to auction off their coveted concert tickets.
4TH ANNUAL FORE PAWS GOLF TOURNAMENT – JUNE
More than 120 golfers enjoyed 18 holes of golf on one of the area’s most beautiful courses as well as dinner and a silent auction. A combination of treasured Boston sports memorabilia and golf-themed items helped raise a record amount for our Lilly and Orchid Extraordinary Medical Fund.

FUNDRAISING
Each year, in addition to raising money for our annual fund, our team at Baypath solicits support for a few key services. During our last fiscal year, the Development Committee sought to raise funds to help target cat and dog overpopulation as well as emergency/extraordinary medical care for dogs and cats. Thanks to generous support from our donors, we are proud to share with you the following:
Spay/Neuter Fund $8,686We raised $8,686 for our Spay/Neuter Fund through our spring mail appeal. Thanks to these efforts, we were able to provide:
38 Spays | 53 Neuters
The Lilly & Orchid Fund $22,268Thanks to the incredible generosity of an anonymous donor, we were able to replenish the Extraordinary Medical Fund and we renamed it in honor of the donor’s foster kittens who were beneficiaries of the fund. In addition to the anonymous donor’s $10,000 gift, we raised funds thanks to our attendees and sponsors of our 4th Annual Fore Paws Golf Tournament.
Holiday Giving $136,652For the first time, Baypath participated in #GivingTuesday, an international day of giving, on the Tuesday following Thanksgiving. We received overwhelming support on this day, with special thanks to an anonymous donor creating a $10,000 matching gift challenge. The generosity continued throughout the holiday season as our supportive community made our annual holiday appeal our most successful one to date!

CELEBRATING OUR 40TH ANNIVERSARY
“There’s No Place Like Home”In recognition of reaching our 40th anniversary, Baypath will be sharing stories and celebrating this achievement with our adopters, donors, supporters, staff , and volunteers during events throughout the year. We thank all of the amazing people, who for the past 40 years, have provided care and support for cats and dogs in need!
GROWING FORWARD
Community demand for Baypath’s services continues to grow, and we plan to stay in lockstep to meet these needs.
For instance, we continue to notice an abundance of families in the Metrowest area looking to adopt a shelter pet. In addition to taking in animals from our own region, we work with partners to rescue animals in areas of the country where overpopulation continues to be a problem, ensuring a manageable supply of companion animals ready to be placed in forever homes.
As we plan for the future, expect to see increased outreach, education, and pet training – all of which help our adopters create a strong, positive bond with their pets.
Not surprisingly, we anticipate needing to grow our physical plant to accommodate these expanded services and to enjoy continued success. As such, we are working closely with the town of Hopkinton in consideration of their assistance to stay an integral part of this community. For example, last year, we worked with the town’s Zoning Commission to update zoning laws to allow for the possibility of a new location for the shelter within Hopkinton.
This year, thanks to a partnership with the Town Manager’s office as well as the Board of Selectmen, an article was passed that will result in a 50-year lease for town-owned land to be made available to an animal shelter in the town of Hopkinton.
We appreciate the town officials and caring residents of Hopkinton who have shown incredible support for the continued growth of our organization, and a dedication to animal welfare.
HAPPY TAILS
CutieOlder cats also can have quite the impact on humans. Cutie is a shy, older cat who needed a little extra time and patience to settle comfortably in a home.
“Cutie has given so much love to us. I recently had major surgery and when I came home from rehab I was not able to sleep. Cutie decided she would snuggle to me as close as she could, leaving no space between us, and would try to purr me to sleep. On the really diffi cult nights of insomnia, she would come hover over my face and give me a gentle peck on the cheek, as if to tell me it’s going to be okay.” - Lynn
CorduroyWe take pride in rescuing cats and dogs that need more time and attention to settle in. Our foster-to-adopt program is an excellent way to work with and get to know a pet before committing to become a forever family.
“The fi rst time we met Corduroy at his foster home, he sat under the pool table and hissed at us. Something about him, though, was pulling at our hearts. He came home with us on March 17, 2016, with signifi cant trust issues. We tip-toed around him for about a week and then I decided to just go for it and scoop him up. I put him on my lap and pet him until he started purring. I don’t think he’s stopped since. We fi nalized the adoption in September of 2016.” - Jennifer
CORDUROY CUTIE
LanieLanie came to Baypath from an overcrowded shelter in Louisiana. An extremely bright and affectionate girl, Lanie did have a few challenges to overcome such as nervousness about meeting new dogs while on leash, jumpy behavior, and trouble settling down. Baypath’s Dog Behavior Team taught her new skills through positive reinforcement that helped her get adopted into a caring, nurturing family.
“Lanie has become such a part of our family and we absolutely adore her! She’s currently enrolled in a dog reactivity class that she’s doing great in. She and my husband, Austin, are best friends and she never leaves his side when he’s home from work!” - Randi
LANIE
Louie“Shelter shock” is a situation in which a dog may have experienced a sudden change in surroundings and has lost trust in humans and/or other animals. These dogs are fearful and need time and consistent care to re-acclimate to social environments.
“Louie was a pretty extreme case, and did not take to new people or pets quickly. We knew from the first moment of meeting the little guy he would be worth the patience to give him the happy life he deserved. The moment we first saw him play with a new toy (something he rarely did), run happily across the yard, cuddle up with his furry brother Liam, and so many more instances of a changed, trusting dog, we knew it was all worth it. We love him, Baypath and our wonderful foster family for adding to our little family.” - James
RoryBeing in shelters is not easy for any animal, no matter how much love and support they receive from staff and volunteers. Having an open heart and lots of patience can lead to a whole new loving experience.
“We adopted Rory in January 2017 and waited two months for a tail wag. Rory would hide outside under snowy bushes and refused to come in. She would pace and barely eat. It took a lot of patience with her, but I swear I would do it all over again if I had to. The patience led to the most loving and sweet dog. She trusts us FULLY because we took the time to let her come to us. She doesn’t like other humans, which is not ideal, but when it comes down to it, I know that she loves us and needed us.” – Katie
RORYLOUIE
Rory (now Cody)Rory went into his foster home after being passed over at the shelter for four months. He was very stressed out and barked excessively. His foster family worked to soothe him, even singing him Elvis’ “Hound Dog” to stop his crying. The more challenges they faced with Rory, the more they fell in love and realized they couldn’t part with him.
“He makes us laugh every single day with his quirks, no exaggeration - every day. He is not perfect. He has to be sedated at the vet for checkups. He has to eat his food in a separate room. He is not great with kids. But you fi gure it out, and you have Baypath to fall back on when you need help fi guring it out. He is our Cody, and we love him just the way he is.” – Terry
FOSTER “FAILS”
A foster fail is when a family giving temporary shelter to a dog or cat as a foster home decides to adopt the animal as their forever pet.
Franny (now Zooey)Franny’s mom had a simple mission: Transport Franny – a senior stray from Boston – from post-dental surgery back to Baypath. She decided to foster Franny to oversee her recovery. Having foster failed before, she and her family saw the signs, and after a few adoption days that turned up no forever family, they fell in love with the tiny sweetheart who sleeps with her pink tongue hanging out, and formally adopted her.
“Zooey truly is the bubbles in our champagne. We don’t know where she came from, but we are ecstatic she chose to stay with us. We’re a family.” – Rosemary

A Worthy CauseFor years, Elaine, our longest tenured volunteer, has helped Baypath impact local neighborhoods, especially those with feral cat colonies. She works closely with independent rescuers – selfless, passionate individuals dedicated to saving lives – to rehome and spay/neuter cats in overpopulated areas. Through these networks, Baypath has been able to take in hundreds of cats and kittens, provide them medical care, often a foster home, and ultimately find them loving homes. This work inspired Baypath’s largest single contribution to date: $70,000. The donor, a friend of an independent rescuer, had never been to our shelter, never adopted from us, and never volunteered. She simply found our mission to help animals and their people to be an incredibly worthy cause.

Volunteer of the Year Award
HONOR, MEMORIAL, AND LEGACY GIVING
Baypath is proud to be the beneficiary of in honor of, memorial, and legacy gifts. This past fiscal year, nearly 10% of our revenue came from these contribution categories. Animal lovers and their families directed donations to our shelter, ensuring our ability to rescue more dogs and cats in need. Going forward, Baypath aims to formalize an estate planning program for legacy giving.
“Baypath is as homegrown Hopkinton as you can get. Forty years after a small group of citizens started saving unclaimed strays from being destroyed or sold for research, thousands upon thousands of pets have found loving homes through an organization widely respected in the region for its compassion and professionalism.”
