A Message from Our BishopOctober 2017

My dear friends in Christ,

Thank you for reviewing the 2017 Annual Report of the Diocese of Joliet Catholic Education Foundation. I am very proud of the many achievements of the foundation each year and grateful to the staff, volunteers and benefactors that make the annual progress a reality.

Since 1996, the Catholic Education Foundation has awarded over $20 million in need-based scholarships to 15,500 students. It has distributed $450,000 in Education Grants to parishes and has provided $225,000 in continuing education grants for administrators, teachers and parish catechists.

In the words of Pope Francis, “Catholic education is one of the most important challenges for the Church, currently committed to new evangelization in an historical and cultural context that is undergoing constant transformation.” The seven-county Diocese of Joliet certainly continues to transform itself socially and economically. I am very grateful to be able to rely on all benefactors and a superb Board of Directors of the Catholic Education Foundation.

I pray that God will continue to shine His blessings upon you and your family.

May God bless you.

A Message from Our Board ChairOctober 2017

Dear Friends of the Catholic Education Foundation:

I am honored to be starting my term as Chairman of the Catholic Education Foundation Board of Directors. Thank you to all Foundation benefactors who join our volunteer board members in supporting our qualified students with financial aid. I am delighted that each one of our board members financially invest in our deserving students.

It has been an exciting year for the Foundation in setting records for total revenue raised, the amount of scholarships awarded, and the growing number of students receiving aid. The Board shares my conviction that with these achievements comes the awesome responsibility of disciplined stewardship. We pledge to our benefactors as well as our students and schools that the Catholic Education Foundation will continue to strive to grow our assets and distribute more scholarships in the future; there so is much more need than we can currently serve and we want to help as many students as possible.

So on behalf of the Board of Directors, I express my deep gratitude and appreciation to all who support the vital work of the Catholic Education Foundation.

Sincerely,

Donald CiancioChairman of the Board

A Message fromOur Superintendent and Chief Executive Officer

October 2017

Dear CEF Supporters and Friends,

We sincerely thank the benefactors and volunteers of the Catholic Education Foundation (CEF) as we celebrate another successful year. Without the wise investments at every level by over 1,500 donors, there would be hundreds of students who would not be able to receive a Catholic education today.

In recent years the CEF has been blessed with a tremendous growth in the creation of family funds. These donor-directed instruments are either distributed and replenished by the donor each year or endowed by donor declaration so that only a portion of the interest is used to fund student scholarships forever. Often, these gift vehicles are restricted to a certain school, region, or student demographic.

This year several donor-directed funds were established through charitable bequests of wise individuals who wished to perpetuate support of Catholic education. The increased revenue from these funds helped to account for nearly 100 additional scholarships that were awarded to qualified students. In the end, our greatest blessing this past year has been our ability to change the lives of 1,648 CEF Scholars with the help of wise individuals who recognize a Heaven-Sent return on their investment!

Thank you for your generous support through your prayers and financial support of the Catholic Education Foundation.

Sincerely,

Rev. John Belmonte, SJ, Ph.D. Joseph L. Langenderfer, CFRESuperintendent of Schools Chief Executive Officer

“Our greatest blessing this past year has been our ability to change the lives of 1,648 CEF Scholars.”

Donor SpotlightKazma Family FoundationThe Catholic Education Foundation is proud to partner with the Kazma Family Foundation. It is with profound gratitude that we recognize Gerry and Margaret Kazma and foundation President Leigh-Anne Kazma for their wonderful example of Christian stewardship. The Kazma Family Foundation has provided life-changing opportunities to 550 Kazma Graduates since 2001. In addition, there are currently 125 Kazma Scholars attending all seven high schools in the Diocese of Joliet. The success stories of these graduates who might not have experienced a Catholic secondary education without the Kazma Family are numerous.

Gerry, Margaret and Leigh-Anne Kazma join Bishop Siegel and Fr. John Belmonte, SJ to congratulate Vaughn Murray from IC Catholic Prep, Elmhurst.

Donor SpotlightBob and Joan Dempsey Endowed ScholarshipLooking for a way to honor your loved ones while also making a positive difference in a child’s life? A former member of the CEF Board of Directors and her husband responded to this question in a dramatic fashion. During her membership on the board, Mary Kay Kaufmann saw first hand that the foundation had been promoting the creation of donor-named scholarships in addition to raising funds each year to give out immediately to qualified students seeking financial aid.

When retirement took Mary Kay and Tom Kaufmann outside the Diocese of Joliet, it didn’t stop their affinity for supporting Catholic education in the area where Mary Kay was born and raised. They created a scholarship endowment to honor her parents, Bob and Joan Dempsey. The Dempseys sacrificed to educate their six children at St. Raymond Cathedral School in Joliet. The endowment was created to coincide with the 100th anniversary of St. Raymond Cathedral Parish in hope that others will offer similar memorials.

The establishment of the Bob and Joan Dempsey Endowed Scholarship will provide immediate funding of one scholarship this coming school year and three scholarships the following year. With moderate growth in the endowment, it is projected that one new scholarship will be added each year to benefit St. Raymond Cathedral School students. The family encourages other St. Raymond Cathedral Alumni to create similar funds for the purpose of perpetuating Catholic education at their beloved alma mater.

Leaders for the FutureContinuing Education for Parish Catechists and School TeachersThe Leaders for the Future program supports college-level study in order to develop future parish ministry and Catholic school leaders in the Diocese of Joliet. The CEF values its partnership with the following colleges and universities in support of our Diocese of Joliet teachers and catechists: Benedictine, Lewis, St. Francis, Creighton, Catholic Theological Union, Felician, DuPage, St. Joseph, Notre Dame, and Our Lady of the Lakes. Similarly, the cohort with USF and Lewis University for the Principal Preparation Program and Educational Leadership programs have been most successful in providing for future school administrators. An additional program for parish personnel is sponsored in part by the University of Dayton-Institute for Pastoral Initiatives. These programs are designed to recognize the importance of supporting future lay leaders engaged in graduate study and ministry certification respectively for ministry in the Diocese

The following schools and parishes have teachers and catechists enrolled in graduate programs which the CEF supports through no-interest loans covering approximately 30 percent of the tuition cost. After three years of continuous service with the diocese, the CEF forgives the loans:

Thank you very much and may God always bless you!”

Ministry Grants to Parishes The Parish Ministry Grant program is being funded in FY 17-18 by the Catholic Ministries Annual Appeal (CMAA) which enables the CEF to distribute an additional 40 to 57 student scholarships totaling $40,000. The CEF is most grateful to all CMAA donors for their generosity. Parish Ministry awards are education grants that enrich the faith understanding and deepen the spirituality of Catholics in parishes across the diocese. Benefits to Our Donors The Catholic Education Foundation welcomes cash contributions, bequests, and tax-wise planned gifts of all denominations. The Foundation, in return, offers numerous benefits to our donors:

Guarantee of Professional Management The Board of Directors guarantees sound professional management of all funds entrusted to our wise stewardship.

Frequent Reporting to Donors Monthly, quarterly and/or annual reporting is initiated as well as a year-end, independent audit to guarantee full disclosure of Foundation accounts and activities. Our most recent financial audit is available for viewing on the web (www.dioceseofjoliet.org/edfoundation) and is open to public review throughout the year in our offices during normal business hours. Pursuant to IRS regulations, the audit can also be mailed upon request.

Memorialize a Loved One Often donors wish to remember a loved one, family heritage or particular cause by naming a specific fund, which serves as an everlasting remembrance.

Gifts that Last Forever Various planned giving vehicles, sometime using different methods, enable a gift to work forever by using only the income, while the principal remains uninhibited.

The Donor’s Favorite CharityFunds can be earmarked for a special beneficiary or be unrestricted to serve the general purposes of the Catholic Education Foundation. Similarly, many planned gift vehicles are open-ended, and the donor may add to the corpus at a later date.

Tax Advantage to Donor All contributions are accepted with the intention of providing optimal income tax deductions for the donor, and liquid assets are invested to produce maximum income for the charitable cause.

You Can Tailor Your Giftsto Fit Your Desires!
