OUR VISION

OUR MISSION

We strengthen the lives of children by enhancing their mental health and physical well-being.

Dear Friends,

I am proud to take on the role of DePelchin’s Board chairman this year. My life has come full circle with DePelchin as I began my career as a social worker at the Florence Crittenton Home, which later merged with DePelchin. During that time, I helped teen moms work towards achieving a stable family or placing their baby for adoption. Although many of its programs have evolved since that time, DePelchin remains committed to its mission and fulfilling Kezia DePelchin’s enduring legacy:

“These children must be cared for. We cannot desert them nor fail them.”

Last year, DePelchin celebrated its 125th anniversary as the oldest family services agency in Houston. Our Family Ever After birthday party was held on May 2, 2017 – 125 years to the day Kezia DePelchin opened her Faith Home doors to three abandoned children. Since then, thousands of children and families have turned to DePelchin for help, and throughout our anniversary year and leading up to our October 22 Family Day closing event, we shared many stories of individuals whose lives were forever changed because of DePelchin. These stories always get to me, especially our foster parent ‘angels on earth’ who welcome children into their homes as Kezia did back in 1892. You are a big part of these stories too, for without your generous support, DePelchin would not be able to do its good work and make a meaningful difference in our community.

In this annual report, we highlight not only the program outcomes from your support, but also the stories of changed lives because of it. A dedicated foster mom is recognized for her 47 years of service. A young woman finds her way to independence after foster care. A loving family opens their home up to children up in foster care. A commitment to asking for parenting help changes a young child and his family. I hope you enjoy these stories and the smiling faces on adoption day, featuring a few of last year’s forever families!

Kezia was right to put her “faith in the good people of Houston” 126 years ago to support her cause. Thank you for helping us make tomorrow brighter for children and families in Texas.

With deepest gratitude,

Pam Brasseux Chairman Board of Directors

as a DePelchin Foster Parent

47 Years

Juanza Sanson was recognized at the Family Day anniversary event as DePelchin’s foster parent with the most years of service! For 47 years, Juanza has opened her home to abused, abandoned and neglected children, giving them not only a safe place to live but also a loving family to care for them. Juanza and her late husband

Johnny dedicated their lives to helping the most vulnerable, fostering more than 100 children, many of whom were considered medically fragile. The framed photos of each child in Juanza’s home speak to her inspiring life’s work as a foster parent, and if asked, Juanza proudly recalls each child by name. One child holds a special place in Juanza’s heart, who came to her home nearly twenty years ago with a medical condition. With time and the Sanson’s tender care, he grew out of his health issues and left their home for a group facility for older foster kids. The Sansons continued to take care of him, picking him up on weekends, attending graduation ceremonies and providing for him as if he was their own child. When he “aged out” of foster care at 18 years with nowhere to go, he came back to live with the Sansons, his “real family” as he referred to them, who helped him find a job and a path towards independent living. It is often said that foster parents are angels on earth, and Juanza Sanson, with 47 years of service, is one of the brightest angels we have at DePelchin!

After Foster Care

Finding Her Way

An eighteen year-old girl should have a safe home and a loving family to support her. Sadly, that is not always the case, especially for children who

grow up in foster care and “age out” of the system at 18 years. After leaving foster care, Marissa was couch-surfing and facing homelessness herself when her caseworker told her about DePelchin’s Transitioning to Adulthood through Guidance and Support or TAGS program. Recognizing the opportunity, Marissa immediately applied for the program and moved in within a couple of days, joining 17 other residents who had similar stories. In need of employment, Marissa also applied for DePelchin’s paid internship program and was offered a part-time position as DePelchin’s front desk receptionist, greeting children and families as they entered the door. In addition to offering her employment, this position gave Marissa the opportunity to pursue her dream of becoming a Pre-K teacher, working mornings

and attending school in the evenings at HCC. Marissa took full advantage, working hard at DePelchin and diligently applying herself towards her career goal. Marissa was eventually offered a full-time position at DePelchin, working as an administrative assistant on the prevention team and then as a specialist on the foster care adoption recruitment team. A year into her employment at DePelchin, Marissa was recognized at DePelchin’s all-staff meeting with the monthly ABCD award for going above and beyond the call of duty, an honor bestowed upon her by her peers. You might also say that Marissa has gone above and beyond by fully embracing the opportunities given to her and not letting the hardships of life get in her way. “The TAGS program and internship can be the best thing that can happen to someone if they take full advantage of it,” she says. “I took full advantage and look where it got me.”

Through AdoptionGrowing Their Family

With three grown children and an empty nest on the horizon, Camille and Ron Reese felt it was time to expand their family. They had always

wanted more children; and for many years, they had felt a calling to adopt children from foster care. As teachers, Camille and Ron knew that there were kids in Houston who needed loving parents, and after speaking with families from their church, they decided to become foster parents with DePelchin. Within days of becoming licensed, the Reeses received a call that would change their lives forever: a baby boy was about to be released from the NICU and needed a loving family. The Reeses were ready, and the baby was brought to their home later that evening. “It was true love at first sight,” said Ron. Their older children fell in love with the baby too and also with the idea of adopting children from

foster care. “My oldest kids said that adoption is definitely in their future,” recalls Camille. “We have become very involved with the foster to adopt community, and my kids tell anyone that will listen about the need for loving families.” Within a year of welcoming the baby into their home, he officially became part of their family at the adoption finalization ceremony. The entire family was there to witness this special event, wearing their ‘Team Reese’ t-shirts — Mom, Dad, Big Sister and two Big Brothers. Since that time, the Reeses have also accepted another child into their home – a little girl who was placed into foster care at 11 months old. The Reeses have welcomed her with open arms and are excited about adopting her later this year. “We have gone from a family of five to a family of seven,” said Camille. We can’t imagine our lives any other way.”

Growing Their FamilyThis is the message DePelchin’s Parenting Help program shares with the local community.

Parenting is hard. Needing help does not mean you are a bad parent.

Recently a mother came to DePelchin for help with her son, who had been diagnosed

with Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD). He had been released from several daycares because of his aggressive and defiant behavior. Without childcare, his mother’s employment was soon at risk. Feeling very stressed, she made the decision to turn to Parenting Help.

When DePelchin’s Parenting Help clinician entered the picture, the family had tried everything they could think of to get their child to behave. The clinician began by helping the family create clear ground rules,

which included input from the child so he felt empowered. She also worked with the family on using a behavior chart to help him control his strong emotions. Quickly recognizing that the child enjoyed receiving praise for his positive behavior, the clinician helped the family discover new and positive ways to motivate him.

Several months later this same child, who months prior was released from daycare for poor behavior, received the “student of the month” award from his new school. His behavior has improved dramatically in all aspects of his life, with his school commenting that they could not imagine this same child having had issues at another school.
