To all the supporters and recipients of the Douglas County Car Care Program:

Imagine that you suddenly have no means of transportation at your disposal. Now imagine that you are a young couple or a single parent with children try-ing to obtain or maintain a job, get groceries, go to a school event, or go to the doctor. Imagine that you are in your later years and need a job to supplement your Social Security and have no transportation. For many, these are not imagi-nations; they are a daily crisis to be negotiated.

The Douglas County Car Care Program is a faith-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit serv-ing Douglas County Minnesota with a goal to “Promote Independence by Provid-ing Car Care”. In 2017, DCCCP donated 48 cars and repaired 88 client cars. Since our beginning in 2013, 209 cars have been donated and 376 client cars re-paired. Because of our program, 585 families were able to get a job, get to work, make their medical appointments and/or care for their families.

All of this is made possible because of the generous financial support of individu-als and businesses in the community for which we are very thankful. We give thanks also for the services provided by the local automotive community, vehicle donors, and the great work done by many volunteers.

A special thanks to Koep’s Korner for accepting the donated vehicles, evaluating and repairing them when emergency repairs are needed. In addition, a special thanks to Alexandria Motors, Diamond Buick GMC, and Juettner Motors for evaluating vehicles for Car Care Saturdays, and then providing shop and technical support for our volunteers.

Our third annual “Taste of Douglas County” was held at the Holiday Inn. Nearly 500 supporters enjoyed the entrees that were prepared and served by 12 restau-rants.

Thank you also to all who have not been mentioned. The support of DCCCP in this community is incredible. Because of you, we can continue to strive to “restore hope, one car at a time”.

Community Support and Volunteers

2017 Volunteer of the year

Henry Mingo, received the 2016 DCCCP

Volunteer of the year award at the annual

Volunteer Appreciation Dinner. At the event,

Henry is explaining his affection for cold,

cars, curiosity and cheerleaders., and how he

delivered the cheerleaders, including his

wife-to-be, Sonya, home from practice with

only his reverse gear working. Both Henry

and his son, Tyson, are regular volunteers on

Car Care Saturdays.

Ed Hagel, who maintains and organizes the volunteer tools, saw the

need to replace the tool trailer. Ed not only made the suggestion to

replace it, but after Paul’s Small Engine agreed to a trade in and

special pricing for the new trailer, Ed simply donated the money to

replace it. Winning Edge then donated the signage for the trailer.

At the right, Henry Mingo is preparing to replace the fuel pump on a

Car Care Saturday at Diamond Buick, while volunteers Jim Korkowski

and Robert Doroff, a 2016 car recipient, replace the front brakes and

idler arm on a client’s Chevy Blazer.

At the left, Harold Koep is presenting keys for a 2001 Toyota High-

lander to Theresa Jasnek. Theresa also received a road emergency kit,

developed and donated by the First Lutheran Church Bible Camp stu-

dents.

Harold Koep, owner of Koep’s Korner and a member of the Douglas

County Car Care Board, evaluates the donated cars to determine if they

are viable for repair to donate to someone.

200th Car donated by DCCCP

DCCCP celebrated the donation of the 200th car given away. Joining in the celebration were from left to right, Jake Juettner from

Juettner Motors, Jeff Perreault from Diamond Buick, Nicole Nettleton from Alexandria Motors, Sonnie Janz, DCCCP Board Member,

Harold Koep, owner of Koep’s Korner and a DCCCP Board Member , Cliff Korkowski, DCCCP Founder and Executive Director, Terrie

Premis , recipient of the 200th car, and John Peshek, President of the DCCCP Board. Terrie Premis is holding a road emergency kit

that was developed and donated by the First Lutheran Church Bible Camp students.

Mary Scott is all smiles after receiving her

2005 Chrysler Town and Country so she can

continue as the caregiver for both her son

and her brother.

Nicole Hamilton’s daughter , Anastasia, says it all with her smile as her mom

is getting keys to her 2000 Chrysler Town and Country . For Nicole, the car

is critical so she can continue to get to work at the Spa at Arrowwood

Resort. Her son Tristan, when he learned that they were getting a donated

car, said, “Mommy. I want it to be a gold car.” And it was.

Car Care Saturdays

Car Care Saturdays are held on the third Saturday

of each month. Volunteers are invited to meet for

breakfast at Traveler’s Inn at 7:00 in the morning

and review the work schedule for the day. The goal

is to have all the repairs completed by noon. By

8:00 am, everyone heads to the host shop.

Car Care Saturdays are hosted by the three fran-

chised dealers in Alexandria. As the host, they pro-

vide the evaluation of each of the client cars prior

to the Saturday, and order the parts so the volun-

teers are ready to work. They also provide techni-

cians as volunteers and the use of their shop and

specialty tools. Without these dealers, there would

be no program.

For each Car Care Saturday, one of the volunteers

brings the DCCCP tool trailer to the host site. Most

of the hand tools needed for the repairs are readily

available. For the volunteers, Car Care Saturdays

are as much a social event as a service to the com-

munity. Because NAPA provides the parts at their

cost, and the volunteer labor is free, most clients do

not exceed the $300 limit set for car repairs.

On the left, Gary

Mattson is assem-

bling the front brake

while Rod Eldevik

and Jim Korkowski

provide support. On

the far right, Hank

Janz is putting a set

of brakes on another

client vehicle. Typi-

cally six to eight vol-

unteers get together

to repair from four to

six vehicles on a Car

Care Saturday.

DCCCP is approximately half way through the three year funding program, for the leadership

transition plan. Some started the program later than others but hopefully all that can will continue

with their pledged giving. The community is extremely supportive of the program, and there is no

doubt that your support should keep the program strong in serving the community for the foreseeable

future.
