The Grosse Pointe Youth Nautical Education Foundation (GPYNEF) continues to pursue its mission to promote national and international sailing, maritime education, competition and water safety. GPYNEF accomplished this goal with emphasis on local High School Sailing programs, competitive sailing events and educational opportunities.

The 2017 High School sailing season began early as sailors rigged boats for the Varsity season set sailing on March 22nd. Yes, it was bitter cold, but the high school sailors were anxious to pull out their dry suits and kick-off their season. GPYNEF provided financial support to the three area high schools and sponsored several regattas throughout the spring. All twelve High School teams from metro Detroit performed well in regional, state and national regattas. Grosse Pointe South had a “stand out year” qualifying regionally which earned them a spot in the 2017 Baker Team National Champion-ships held in Norfolk, VA. Grosse Pointe South was ranked 12th in the Nation.

GPYNEF’s Scholarship Program supported local high school students by awarding 12 college scholarships in 2017. The scholarship program is designed to encourage young men and women to actively participate in sailing beyond high school and into college. The GPYNEF Scholarship recipients often join college sailing teams. While most choose to give back to their sport by becoming instructors for junior sailing programs where they teach sailing to children as young as 8 years of age. Parents and students alike are both grateful and proud to be recognized at the Scholarship Brunch as a GPYNEF Scholarship recipient.

GPYNEF’s financial support extended into the city of Detroit with its partnership with the Challenge the Wind program located in Kean’s harbor. The Foundation provided funding, equipment and volunteer assistance which contributed to this year’s rapid growth. Community sailing will continue to be part of its mission to provide inner-city youth opportunities to learn and develop a passion for sailing and compete with other sailors from established area Junior Sailing Programs.

GPYNEF’s sponsorship extended into competitive regattas for advanced sailors seeking opportunities to move up the national, international and Olympic ranks. Young adults were given grants which afforded them the opportunity to pursue their sailing ambitions. GPYNEF is also working to expand interests with Set Sail for Autism program in order to provide sailing experience to special needs children.

2017 has been an exceptional year for GPYNEF with many great accomplishments and plans to continue to build on these successes for 2018. GPYNEF greatly appreciates the generous support and funding of its contributors which allows the foundation to continue to form strong partner-ships with local youth sailing programs, high school sailing teams, scholarship program, community sailing and special need adaptive sailing programs.

THE YEAR AHEADFor the year ahead, the Grosse Pointe Youth

Nautical Education Foundation plans to maintain

a steady course with focus on supporting the High

School Sailing programs, sponsoring competitive

events for youth of all ages and providing scholarships

to encourage educational excellence. We plan

to work closely with the Challenge the Wind

organization to provide both funding, equipment

and opportunities that will help them advance their

program with the Detroit youth. The results for this

program have been excellent.

In an effort to enhance local talent and provide

more competitive experiences, GPYNEF will

sponsor a 2018 US Sailing Olympic Regatta for our

local youth sailors.

The Foundation plans to develop further actions

with the Set Sail for Autism program who work with

young Autistic men and women using the sailing

venue to expand their experiences.

Enhancing youth, high school, competitive, and

adaptive sailing would not be possible without the

generous donations of GPYNEF donors.

The Grosse Pointe Youth Nautical Education Foundation (GPYNEF) has a clear mission: to promote national and international amateur sailing, maritime arts, education, water safety and community improvements. The Foundation has been working for several years with the Challenge the Wind organization located out of Kean’s Harbor and is dedicated to teaching inner city kids how to sail. GPYNEF has contributed both funding and boats over the past two of years.

This year they donated four (4) Optimist Dinghy’s to this group to enable them to extend their program to a

younger group of kids. Along with this donation, four GPYC sailors volunteered to spend a day with the “Challenge the Wind” to teach their instructors how to rig and sail the Optimist Dinghy’s. The GPYC junior sailors who volunteered were Emma Turner, Dominic DuLac, Ellie Groustra and Henry Gonzalez. The CTW team was most grateful for the time spent by our sailors.

“Challenge the Wind, which was founded about 8 years ago, was able to double their program this year,” says Past Commodore James Morrow. “GPYNEF has been working closely with Challenge the Wind for about five years.”

CHALLENGE THE WIND EXPAND PROGRAMS

SUPPORTING COMMUNITY

The goal of Sailing for Autism is to demonstrate to the public at large, and employers in particular, the ability of autistic young men and women to contribute in positive, meaningful ways in a variety of roles. Sailing is the medium that is used to demonstrate these abilities.

The Foundation is proud to support this stirring (and successful) initiative with financial assistance. In 2018 GPYNEF will work with local high schools to expand the Set Sail for Autism program.

SUPPORTING HIGH SCHOOL SAILING TEAMS

The GPYNEF continues to provide financial assistance to local high school sailing programs to support growth in the sport across the Nation. The Foundation provides financial support to help fund expert coaching, educational clinics, state of the art equipment, travel grants and other resources which provide a competitive environment to learn, and advance in high school sailing. We are proud to have 12 local area sailing teams that regularly perform well in local and national

regattas. Grosse Pointe South’s Sailing team won their third straight Michigan State championship title for High School Sailing in the fall and finished twelfth in the nation in the US National Baker Team Racing Championship in the spring.

GPYNEF has aligned its mission of supporting high school sailing with the regional governing body known as the Midwest Interscholastic Sailing Association (MISSA). MISSA’s 55 member teams are located in five states

in the Midwest: Illinois, Ohio, Michgan, Minnesota and Wisconsin. MISSA organizes local, regional and state level championship qualifying events such as the Baker Cup for Team Racing and Mallory Cup for Fleet Racing. GPYNEF supported MISSA’s Mallory Cup held at the GPYC in spring 2017. Grosse Pointe South’s team placed eighth and Grosse Pointe North’s team placed fourteenth. GPYNEF also provided travel grants to Grosse Pointe South’s sailing team.

LOCAL ULTIMATE 20S TAKE SECOND PLACE IN THE DETROIT CUP

The Detroit Cup was a successful event this year for our team, including Alex Hume, Mike Hoey, and Ryan Seago. Each of us are former DRYA junior sailors and natives of Grosse Pointe which makes the Detroit Cup a special event for our team. Day four, grade two, World Sailing match race event featured ideal August sailing conditions on the Detroit River — racing Bayview’s Ultimate 20’s, with 5–10 knots of breeze and sunny skies. Our team finished second place out of eight teams, with a 17–4 record through the round robin stage. On the last day of the competition, we won our semi-finals match-up, but unfortunately we lost in the finals to Harry Price and his team from Australia. With a fifth place last year, and a second place this year, hopefully next year will be the year a local team can finally win the Detroit Cup!

Lastly, on November 9th, the team of Matt DeClercq, Alison Knoles, Austin Colpaert, and I will compete in the US Sailing Adult Championship at the St. Petersburg Yacht Club in J70’s. As always, we are very appreciative of GPYNEF’s support. Our success would not be possibe without the financial support of GPYNEF over the past few years.

— Ryan Seago

LOCAL 29ER COMPETITORS FOR NATIONALS AND WORLDS

We first wanted to thank you for your generosity in assisting Louisa and I in making our plans for this past summer become a reality. Specifically, your grant was used towards offsetting the cost of a new set of sails for the 29er Nationals and Worlds.

Nationals included one day of qualifying followed by two days of finals. After a very windy qualifying day, we were slotted into gold fleet (the top 60 competitors). In much lighter and choppier weather, a difficult condition for our slightly larger team, we finished 38th of 113 boats and coming in as the 9th US boat.

Worlds featured three days of qualifying races followed by another three days of finals.

Our first day of Worlds started unfortunately with a break-down where damage to our rudder forced us to withdraw from two of the day’s three races. We raced in silver fleet for the remainder of the event, eventually finishing 66th out of the 130 boats competing

Again, we would like to thank the GPYNEF very much for your generosity; without you this summer would not have been possible.

— Claire Huebner and Louisa Nordstrom

2017 GPYC USODA

GPY NEF sponsored the US Optimist Great Lakes Championship hosted at the GPYC on June 23–25, 2017. Sailors between the ages of 9–14 com-peted from all over the Great Lakes region in the world’s largest sailing class, the Optimist dinghy.

The event offered a competitive opportunity for advanced sailors to qualify for the 2018 National Opti US Team trials. Four local sailors qualified and will participate in the upcoming trails: Conner Kirkman, Dougy Cowan, Charlie Gonzalez and Alex Tigges.

GROSSE POINTE YACHT CLUB FUND-RAISERS

There are two annual Grosse Pointe Yacht Club traditions that mark the arrival of a new boating season; the annual Summer Breeze party and the area’s premier in-the-water boat show, the Great Lakes Boating Festival.

These two great traditions are also essential components of the Grosse Pointe Youth Educational Foundation’s annual fund-raising efforts.

Join the fun. Help raise the funds needed to keep the Foundation growing as fast as interest in Junior sailing is growing.

THE GREAT LAKES BOATING FESTIVAL

Beginning Friday, May 18 and continuing through Sunday May 20, the Great Lakes Boating Festival will fill the Grosse Pointe Yacht Club harbor with state-of-the- art boats, that range from center consoles to luxurious motor yachts.

While the harbor is full of the latest in boats, the GPYC’s east lawn is host to a variety of nautical-related exhibits…not to mention delicious food.

With fund-raising raffles for boats, cars and Rolex watches going on all weekend, the Festival is a great way to see your friends, get aboard the latest in boats and support the GPYNEF.

THE SUMMER BREEZE

Mark your calendar for Friday evening, May 18, 2018. That is the date of the Yacht Club’s Summer Breeze party celebrating the opening of the boating season and the Great Lakes Boating Festival.

Enjoy great food and fun while bidding on fabulous items in a live auction and dance the night away. There isn’t a more enjoyable way to support the work of the Foundation than to be part of the action at the Summer Breeze.

SPONSOR SUPPORTThe two annual fund-raising events

held at the GPYC provide important financial support to the Grosse Pointe Youth Nautical Education Foundation.

A key to the events’ fundraising suc-cess can be linked directly to the generos-ity of sponsors who donate time, money and products to make the exhibits, raffles and auctions so successful.

Their dedication to the Foundation’s goal should be acknowledged by all.
